EXSAS 50 “A PERSONAL TRIBUTE”
Ayahanda Dato’ Abdul Rahim Assalamualaikum wbh. . . It is a great honor being invited to say a few words in this Collections, and I would like to thank the Editorial for the opportunity. It is already forty four years since Sekolah Menengah Sains Pahang (Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ahmad Shah Kuantan , SEMSAS) first open its doors to the first batch of selected boys and girls to enroll in this first ever Residential School in Pahang. It was January the 1" 1973 that these batch of 219 boys and girls first step their foot in the school to begin a long journey, the journey to realize the mission envisaged in the Third Malaysian Plan, that is to balance the inequality of education opporfunities among the "rakyat" and to create a balance distribution of professionals among Malaysians. Under the tutorship of a crew of eleven teachers we slowly but surely charted our course. I thank Allah for giving me the opportunity and strength to lead the team on that journey for a span of ten years. In those formative years I hope my team and I had laid a sound foundation for the school on which our successors would continue. Today, after almost half a century in existence the school is proud that it's sons (and daughters) had achieved her mission. This beautiful publication attest to it : thus I take the opportunity to congratulate its birth, and simultaneously celebrate EXSAS’s success. Even though this edition encore the first fifty illustrious names, I am sure this is not conclusive and I look forward to subsequent editions whereby many more achievers will be recorded. HIDUP BERJASA

Introduction (i)
EXSAS 50 - “A Personal Tribute” Assalamualaikum & what’s up? First of all, I think we have the G.O.A.T school slogan. Looking for a more fulfilling school catchphrase than “Hidup Berjasa” is a futile exercise (please pardon my impartiality). Even though SEMSAS is not considered as a premier residential school but she has nevertheless produced high achievers of diverse background who are contributing to our nation and community. Before you guys go any further, please answer the following multiple choice question. Why am I doing this? A. To showcase our most inspiring members B. To increase the profile of EXSAS and SEMSAS C. To galvanise the rest of our members D. I have nothing better to do E. All of the above If “E” is your answer, then pat yourself on the back! Secondly, let us clarify a few things. This list is a personal tribute and NOT an official EXSAS list! It is not a biography and is far from definitive. A list of this nature is always subjective but hey who cares. Perhaps you could not go wrong with more than half of the names listed (the usual suspects) but you could probably argue of who should be included or who should be omitted for the rest (the nice surprises). This list is intended as a light-reading material and should be treated casually. But please keep in mind, “simple is not the opposite of convoluted!” The attempt to write brief, meaningful narrative infused with wit is arduous, to say the least. exsas fifty -
Introduction (ii)
EXSAS 50 - “A Personal Tribute” ( cont’... ) We started the process by inviting EXSAS members to nominate their friends through the website and in the end we received five (5) nominations. To complete the list, I scouted through my phone, name cards and also asked for suggestions from others. Researching for information to complete this list is difficult as the material are not readily available. For the most part, to improve the accuracy of the narrative, we contacted the nominated members and asked them to verify the details. And in the end, we did not use any proven formulas nor algorithms since we know of none that could be applicable here (duh). Lastly, being proud of each EXSAS member on the list is an understatement. They have shown remarkable achievement and having interacted with most of them, the pleasure has been all mine. My utmost gratitude to The President of EXSAS, bro Qisan (who was responsible for the artwork) and my PT gang 2016/2017 (Khairi 81, Idi 90, Fairul 95, Atikah 08, Aqilah 09 & Syamim 10) and special shout-out to my most influential buddy, Nizam Abidin (District Information Oficer, Pekan). Enjoy the list. Sincerely, Althahir Abdul Rashid LM0032 #skylabjuara

Introduction (vii)
“ SINGING JUDGE ” As a judge, Y.A Dato’ Mat Zara’ai bin Alias (EXSAS 1975) is expected to maintain a certain decorum. However, that does not stop him from showcasing his talent and love for music at formal events. The former State Legal Adviser of Pahang is currently a Judicial Commisioner at the Johor Bahru High Court. Professionally, he is well-respected and personally he is well-liked. Too bad for fans of the reality TV show “Otai Masih Berbisa” though since he doesn’t plan to switch career any time soon. Verdict: Despite his distinctive attributes, his biggest contribution to the nation might well be of his offspring, internationally-renowned singer, Yuna Zaraii.

1
“ POTHOLE PATCHER ” Patching pothole should be categorised as trivial for The Secretary General, Ministry of Works, Malaysia. Tasked with ensuring the ministry's core objectives are being met and the implementation of our nation's mega projects proceed efficiently, YBhg Dato' Sri Zohari bin Hj Akob (EXSAS 1976) has plenty on his plate. To his credit, he managed to strike a balance between the strategic planning requirement of his ministry and the never-ending infrastructure issues affecting the average Malaysians. Raison d'être: By remaining grounded, he recognised the concern of ordinary citizen, which has led the ministry to having "zero pothole" target for all federal roads in the country.

2
“ RECORD BREAKER ” The female version of “Forrest Gump” loves to run! Suwaibah binti Muhammad Nasir (EXSAS 1990) holds the most number of records in The Malaysia Book of Records. Using her passion for running as the foundation, she has achieved many milestones including “The Famous Sahara Desert Run” and “The Silk Route Run”. She is currently embarking on her quest of conquering 30 of the world's tallest towers. Her commitment and perseverance has turned her into an icon. Run, Suwaibah, run! Raison d'être: Through her latest mission, she aims to spread awareness on the need for humanitarian aid in Asian refugee camps especially among children.

“ SAUDAGAR SUSU UNTA ” Q1: “Is he an accomplished actor?” Q2: “Is he an award winning architect?” Q3: “Is he an outstanding businessman?” Q4: “Is he an in-demand speaker?” Q5: “Is he a fine film producer?” Q6: “Is there anything that he couldn't do?”
A:“Yes he is.” A:“Yes he is.” A:“Yes he is.” A:“Yes he is.” A:“Yes he is.” A:“Well, he can't come up with this list!”
Verdict: The most famous son of SEMSAS, Azhar bin Sulaiman (EXSAS 1988) is a man of many talents and he is just getting started.

“ SOCIAL ACTIVIST MD ” Professionally, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ariff bin Osman (EXSAS 1977) is the Head of Islamisation of Human Knowledge, Kuliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University, Kuantan. However, he is not your typical academician as he encourages his medical students to develop other virtues such as leadership, business sense and volunteerism. Socially, he has left an indelible marks in the community by co-founding the Badan Nadwah Islamiyah Pahang, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which has started several popular initiatives such as “Pusat Hemodialisis Islam Makmur" and an orphan care center, “Permata Camar”. Verdict: How different things could have turned out as his first ambition was to become a district officer (DO)!
Favorite quote : “As ALLAH swt raise your standard of living, you should also raise your standard of giving…Usah berkira untuk memberi dan tentunya Hidup Berjasa!) exsas fifty -
5
“ THE MONORAIL LADY ” Rohaida binti Ali Badaruddin (EXSAS 1985) is the President & CEO of SCOMI Engineering Berhad, a leading provider of public transportation solutions which is globally recognised for high-quality, sophisticated and cost-effective manufacturing. Having a lady as the boss can be intimidating for some men but she earns the respect of her male colleagues by putting them at ease instead of trying too hard to prove her capability. With her company having operations in many countries, she has very little time for her other passion. However, that does not hinder her from volunteering at Yayasan SCOMI, which works primarily with orphan and underprivileged children. Raison d'être: This pleasant and elegant lady who hails from Pekan, Pahang is leading the way in an industry dominated by men.

6
“ PETROCHEMICALS THOUGHT LEADER ” One of EXSAS members that I hold in high esteem, he is better known within the EXSAS circle as “Boska”. With over 25 years of experience, Mazlan bin Razak (EXSAS 1983) is a sought-after speaker for the petrochemicals industry. He is a Principal Consultant in the Argus Media Singapore office which is a leading market analysis and consultancy firm for the oil and gas industry. The father of five is an avid golfer and was a past President of EXSAS. Raison d'être: He was the major force in initiating EXSAS Power Talks program which has benefitted many of our members till today.
Favorite quote : “I am allergic to b.s!”

7
“ GIRL GUIDES FOREVER ” Hajjah Normala binti Baharudin (EXSAS 1987) is a WAGGGS! No, not the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes but rather the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. As the Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (GGAM), she has set her vision to bring about “New Challenges - New Opportunities” for GGAM to be more meaningful to its members and universal community. With million of girls' life in the world being “spiced up” by girl guides, perhaps it is time to tell Mrs Victoria Beckham to move aside. Raison d'être: She has been elected to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts' World Board during its 36th World Conference last year and will serve the World Board for 2018 - 2020 triennium. Wow!”
exsas fifty -
8
“ GOMEN BIKER ” Gomen bikers is a self-described moniker coined by Y.B Datuk Seri Hj. Naim bin Abu Bakar (EXSAS 1975) for him and his group of motorcycle enthusiasts. It was probably meant to project a lower rank with regard to the bikers community. Not having the limelight placed on him suits this hardworking State Secretary of Malacca just fine. As the number one government officer in the state, he is unpretentious and approachable. Raison d'être: Together with other state leaders, he has shown that size does not matter by putting Malacca as one of the most vibrant state in the country.

“ CYCLING DYNAMO ” An architect by profession, Hj Ahnuar bin Salleh (EXSAS 1983) has cycled his way into the Malaysia Book of Records. Driven by a health scare, he took up cycling and the rest is history. Repeat after me; “solo road bike ride attempt for the fastest average speed and the oldest person circumnavigating the outer most routes in Peninsular Malaysia in Malaysia’s Month of Independence”. What a mouthful! I bet many of us are huffing and puffing just trying to say his feat in a single breath, let alone trying to cycle around Peninsular Malaysia. Verdict: His achievement has become an inspiration to many including myself. Suddenly, committing to this list doesn’t seem so bad any longer.

“ UNIVERSAL SOLDIER ” TJ as he was popularly known back in the days is the highest ranking EXSAS member serving in the Malaysian Armed Forces. He started off with a humble beginning at the Royal Military College Cadets Division in Sg Besi Kuala Lumpur and was commissioned into the 9th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. Colonel Rashidin Hashimi Abdul Rashid (EXSAS 1987) went through the mill and rose through the ranks while leading and commanding various levels of the Army combat units and training institutions. By blending a dashing leadership style with a soft-spoken approach, he has proven himself to be a charismatic, reliable and essential asset to the military service. As the Director of Army Evaluation and Research Division, he has positioned himself to be the man behind most strategic Army development key decision making process. A reliable and capable Army has always been his interest while soldiers wellbeing in the conduct of their mission embolden the way he conduct his duties to the nation. Raison d’être: He has been awarded with the military merit medal for his gallantry, distinguished service and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty for the peace process at the conflict area in Mindanao.
Favorite quote : "Train the men through the best method with the most effective machine”

11
“ FINANCIAL LITERACY ADVOCATE ” One of the youngest person on the list, Azraei Muhammad (EXSAS 2007) is a talent extraordinaire. Having published a book on financial planning and a travelogue before the age of twenty six, he is a writer and researcher at Better Nation Institute, which is dedicated to the idea of creating a modern, moderate and progressive society through research and outreach programs. He is intelligent and has clarity in his thinking. Slowly but surely, he is building his reputation as a financial literacy advocate for the millennials. Raison d’être: Advocating his peers to improve their financial senses in the face of consumerism is a tough quest.

“ MARKET FEASIBILITY EXPERT ” A market feasibility study determines the depth and condition of a particular real estate market and its ability to support a particular development. Timely and accurate information is crucial for the profitability of any developmental project and central to the process are real estate research companies. Puan Malathi Thevendran (EXSAS 1980) is the Executive Director of Jones Lang Wootton, Malaysia which is the only company in the country that provides research information on a subscription basis. Her knowledge and continuous analysis of property market dynamics has resulted in her being requested to give talks and presentations to real estate participants. Verdict: She is the closest thing to having a “crystal ball” to key industry players.
Favorite quote :
“Believe in yourself and you can achieve anything”

13
“ PR MAESTRO ” As the Director of Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Relations, MRT Corporation, Dato’ Najmuddin bin Abdullah (EXSAS 1986) is the spokesperson for our country’s biggest infrastructure project. Handling the interaction between all the different stakeholders require a person of high capability. His skills were put to the test during the tense relocation negotiation between tenants of the Ampang Park Shopping Mall and MRT Corporation. In 2015, as the Head of Strategic Communications for Malaysian Airlines (MAS) then, he made it to PR Week Global Power Book list for his role in handling the tragic twin crisis of MH 370 & MH 17. Articulate, handson and creative thinker are some of the words being bandied when others are talking about his personal traits. Verdict: It is only a matter of time before he will be at the helm of a huge corporation himself.

“ PUBLIC HEALTH CRUSADER ” The era of viral diseases such as malaria and filariasis may have been contained but there are other public health issues which still pose a threat to Malaysians. At the forefront of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia battle against infectious disease is our very own, Datuk Dr Lokman Hakim bin Sulaiman (EXSAS 1976). Holding the position of Deputy Director General (Public Health), he has worked tirelessly with other government agencies in changing the mindset of the general public on practices conducive to maintaining health and preventing diseases, especially through cleanliness. Verdict: Not bad for our former head boy whose loves to sport a bow-tie.
Note: He took optional retirement in July 2017 from the Ministry of Health of Malaysia after serving for more than 32 years and now currently is a Professor of Public Health at the International Medical University,Kuala Lumpur.

15
“ THE junior ASSEMBLYMAN ” As a first term state assemblyman, YB. Dato' Mohammad Fakhruddin bin Mohd Ariff (EXSAS 1983) has an unenviable task of serving the “Dewan Undangan Negeri Kawasan Bebar”, one of the four state seats in the Parliamentary constituent of Pekan, Pahang Darul Makmur. It covers a huge rural area with limited access. Undaunted by the challenges, he regards being in service to the people a calling. Being a hands-on person, he understands local issues and the general pulse of the populace which endears him well to his constituents. Raison d’être: If East Malaysia is considered as the “fixed deposit” for the ruling coalition, N 22 Bebar can be deemed as the “vote bank” for Pekan’s Member of Parliament.

“ NBOS SUCCESS STORY ” Dr. Haji Mohd Azlan Haji Abdul Jalil (EXSAS 1997) is the founder and General Manager of Rural Transformation Centre of Johor (RTC Johor) which was established under the National Blue Ocean Strategies (NBOS) with the core objective of increasing rural folks income through innovative efforts. In cooperation with National Strategy Unit, MOF, he has perfected the NBOS Strategic Linkages Model by providing more effective approaches. The effort has been recognized by the United Nations (UN) and Malaysia has been selected to be the first among five countries to work under the Blue Numbers - Food Securities Initiatives. But wait, there is more to this talented guy. As a former leader of SEMSAS 23rd Scouts Troop, he holds various important position in international and National Scouting under World Organization of Scout Movement (WOSM) such as the the Asia Pacific Region GSAT Facilitator and National Commissioner. Raison d’être: He has the distinction of being the first EXSAS member to present a paper at The United Nations General Assembly! Favorite quote :

“ FEARLESS COMMUNICATOR ” Trying to summarise this young lady’s achievement in a single paragraph does not do justice to her. Nurul Ashiqin binti Shamsuri (EXSAS 2000) is the Regional Forum Director for World Communication Forum Davos (WCF) – Kuala Lumpur, Jury of C4F Awards Davos and most importantly Founder of Project Fearless, a project dedicated to empowering young women. She is well versed in both International Economic Law and political communication, having researched and represented Malaysia in many speaking engagements internationally. She has spoken in various international forums around the world which included Switzerland, Russia, India, Portugal, Turkey and was a keynote speaker in an event in Ukraine. She has also won the "Relationship of the Future" Award from WCF-Davos. She has also won the “Relationship of the Future” Award from WCF in 2015. Currently pursuing her PhD in International Trade Law focusing on WTO Policy and ASEAN, she will be the one to look out for in the future. Raison d’être: Her vision is to globalise the participation of young women in Malaysia in various fields, develop a new line of leadership in young women and empower the voice of Malaysian women locally and globally.

“ PENDAKWAH NUSANTARA ” Another famous son of SEMSAS. The always smiling Ustaz Zul Ramli bin Mohamed Razali (EXSAS 1983) is a TV & Radio personality. He graduated from the University of Islamic Studies Karachi, Pakistan and has been appearing on many TV & radio programs. Part of the legendary rugby team of SEMSAS in the early 80s, he followed a different path compared to his batch mate who mostly took up science, engineering & medicine. As expected of anyone coming out of a Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP), he turned out to be a success in his chosen albeit different field. Raison d'être: He signifies everything that is great about EXSAS and SEMSAS!
Favorite quote : “Life is a beautiful struggle”

“ KEMBARA WIDAD ” Dato’ Mohd Rizal bin Jaafar (EXSAS 1991) has been a banker for most of his life. Starting his career at an audit firm before honing his skills at The Central Bank for twelve years, he later moved to SME Bank to become the Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer with the aim of transforming the bank into a leading Development Financial Institution (DFI) and was later appointed as the Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO). Continuing his passion as a trend setter, he has recently joined Widad Business Group (WBG) as the Group Chief Executive Officer, where he is responsible for the strategic direction and day to day performance of the group. So far, his career switch is proving to be fruitful as the group has managed to increase its assets many folds over. Raison d’être: WBG is synonymous with their Corporate Services Responsibility (CSR) program, Kembara Widad which combines travelogue and CSR targeting Asnaf entrepreneurs all over Malaysia.

“ ABANG LONG ” You don’t get to be called “Abang Long” just by your seniority. You don’t get to be respected just because you donated money and you don’t get to be mentioned just by being present. But you get to be called “Abang Long” by virtue of your overall contribution and passion as shown by Tuan Hj Nik Malik Nik Amin (EXSAS 1975), an Independent Director of Marine and General Berhad (formally known as Silk Holdings Berhad) and the Managing Director of ND Corporation. He and his wife, Puan Hjh Radziah Mokhtar (EXSAS 1978), have been instrumental in providing all kind of support to EXSAS & SEMSAS since our formation. Raison d’être: “Ikthiar Iftar Sebulan Ramadan” is a program they started which provides free meals to the caretaker of patients in third class wards in public hospitals throughout Terengganu and has been adopted by our members in Kuantan and Bentong, Pahang

“ UNASSUMING UHNWI ” According to Webster Dictionary, unassuming means “modest, lacking in arrogance, pleasant or polite.” You’ll find that some of the most unassuming people are actually the most interesting and powerful of all. They are just decent enough not to display it all the time. How apt it is in describing Tg Dato’ Yusof bin Tg Ahmad Shahruddin (EXSAS 1979), the Managing Director of Dayang Enterprise Holdings Berhad, a reputable provider of maintenance and support services to the oil and gas industry which is listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia. Raison d’être: He has been generous to EXSAS by sharing his experiences with our members and have been supporting our activities financially over the years.

“ POACHER’S POACHER ” Illegal wildlife trade is big business! Unfortunately, our country's location and natural habitat has drawn unwanted wildlife trade. At the forefront of the war against these poachers and smugglers is Dato’ Abdul Kadir bin Abu Hashim (EXSAS 1983), the Director General of Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), Malaysia. Working on scenario planning for his department, he plans to stay ahead of these criminals by stepping up enforcement and forging an alliance with wildlife authorities and organisations locally and abroad. “ CHIEF LOGISTICS ” Pos Malaysia has been an integral part of every Malaysian's life since they first started delivering mail in the 1800s. Being around for so long tend to hasten a company towards institutional atrophy. Fresh approach and ideas are needed. Appointed as the Group Chief Executive Officer since 1st November, 2015, Dato' Mohd Shukrie bin Salleh (EXSAS 1991) and his team have been able to transform the mail-delivery stalwart into a leading full-fledged logistics company. With age on his side, the future looks bright for this former top student. Raison d'être: Instead of letting disruption shape his company's future, he has led Pos Malaysia to become a trailblazer for the e-commerce industry.
Note: Seeking a career change, he has resigned from Pos Malaysia effectively from 31st December, 2017 and has joined Redbox Logistics, AirAsia’s new logistics arm. Perhaps the thought of sitting in AirAsia’s board meeting next to Ms. Neelofa has somewhat helped sway his decision… (wink, wink, wink)

She was barely sixteen years old when she first stepped into the barren land of Sekolah Menengah Sains Pahang (as SEMSAS was known then) to become one of our pioneers. Undaunted, she performed well enough in her studies and even though she was in the Malay Medium she managed to complete her Masters at Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. She would later return to Harvard to do an international tax law program. Having studied at one of the world’s most famous institution of higher learning, her heart still lies at “Batu 8, Jalan Gambang” where it all began.
