I find myself always paying close attention to the living space. The greenery, no matter if it is a lawn in an open plaza, a greenway in a peaceful town, a parterre in a busy street, or a tree in a small courtyard, has power to give people a chance to breath the nature; they can feel the nature while watching trees changing colors, smelling fragrance from flowers or sitting on the lawn and touch the moist dirt. In comfortable green-land, people will be more likely to perform actively and communicate with others, through which a lively urban space will be created.

Project Narrative

The project is located in center of Shanghai. Due to the high-strength exploitation in the downtown area, there are mainly high-rise buildings around and no green land within 1KM from the site. Therefore, the purpose of the design is to create greenery in the forest of concrete, making it possible for people to inhale a sense of nature. According to interviews, residents around have a desperate need for a place to read and exercise, so these functions are included indoor and outdoor in the design. The neighboring residential area contains various types of communities, proving that the residents around come from distinctive stages. The community center is composed of six building blocks, each block diverging outward from center square, and connected to each other through corridors; this achieves the "convergence" of the center square and each block's relative "independence" - People can perform targeted activities in the inner courtyards and platforms of the building blocks, while the amphitheater and other outdoor landscape space are places for those from distinctive background to gather together and communicate.

Project Narrative

The site is located in the peripheral of the old quarter of Kunshan City, the seminary of Kunqu Opera. It contains many living facilities and active spots; however, a lot of outdoor space is not well-used and is in depression. The purpose of the design is to improve connectivity to the existing active spots with pedestrian friendly streetscapes. Since most of the area has been constructed, the renovation will occur at those existing small spaces that are problematic, in order to create a more comfortable block for citizens to pass through and partake in activities. By helping people interact with the environment, energy will be brought back to the district. Acupuncture renovation will be implemented along the two main roads - Hongfeng Rd and Cangji Rd, which are the backstreets between the city's traffic trunks. The renovation aims toward improving comfort for pedestrians instead of cars. To improve the quality of roads and waterfront space - main activity places for traditional citizens in Kunshan, the places for renovation are classified into four typical typologies: street, corner, square and watershed.

Project Narrative

Located in the metropolitan development circles, Xincheng town has convenient transportation, as well as a long history with rich natural resources. In the Comprehensive Renovation of Small Towns in 2017, many polluting factories have been closed, which has improved the environment a lot. However, with the decline of the relevant industry, a large number of workers are leaving the town, making the already depressed economy even worse. The master plan (by the year of 2035) orientates the town to develop high-tech industry, cultural tourism, and ecological regimens. In order to achieve economic growth and improve the residents' living conditions, new industries will be introduced and the infrastructure systems will be improved. Additionally, the ecological system and historical neighborhood will be preserved. Based on the integration of requirements from different subjects including population, industry and ecology, the general scheme aims at revitalizing the town's economy while maintaining its original peaceful atmosphere, as well as helping people live in harmony with the nature.

Project Narrative

The Anshan New Village, where the project is located, is one of the earliest new workers' villages in Shanghai. It is now located in Tongji Knowledge Economy Circle and has a strong cultural atmosphere. In order to support the residential community and create a place for people to enjoy leisure and social interaction, a community clubhouse is proposed with a total construction area of 2,000 square meters and meet the requirements of building function and area allocation. The community clubhouse is located next to a street in Anshan New Village. The form draws on traditional Chinese courtyard style that the surrounding residents are fond of. Through the grid division, each function is arranged in the building strictly according to the requirements of each room's area. It introverts the activity space through two courtyards, reducing the interference of noisy streets and building the image of “deep courtyard” in Chinese ancient poetry while creating a quiet and deep atmosphere.
