His undeniable quality and killer look coupled with extra soundness and the most unexampled color pattern over displayed by a calf sets him apart from any prospect.

He comes as close to replicating his sire, Heat Seeker, as any we could find. Out of a highly proven Full Flush daughter with countless high-sellers and champions.

Sired by Hoo Too. He is a stout, big boned, moderately sized bull that is a double bred to the famous 116 cow family. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE.

Hot new smokey sire. Already siring champions and high-sellers. Out of the legendary 116 cow family. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE.

Better haired, softer middled version of his sire, Total Control. His sire continues to raise high-selling, show-stopping females, and his dam combines our two most profitable cow families, Debbie and Plaza. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE. Owned with Brandon Bird, TX.

Polled purebred Shorthorn. Sonny x full sister to Bad Moon Rising. Calf reports are outstanding. Already siring champions. TH-FREE and PHA-C. Owned with Purple Reign, IL.

Gringo x Epinal. Pictured at 11 mos. Imagine the Denver display bulls pictured without their hair coats, then fault this bull. Dam is a maternal sib to Plaza, MCF’s most famous Maine cow family. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE. Owned with Tony Meyer, TX

Polled purebred Shorthorn. Gizmo x Motrin 1692. Stouter than Gizmo with all the extras. Dam is a multiple Champion by Motrin and out of the famous 1692 cow family. TH-FREE and PHAFREE. Owned with Stephen Vaughn and K&R Cattle, KS.

Homozygous polled, excellent soundness, impeccable style and muscle shape. Has stood the test of time. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE.

The power baldy we have all been looking for. He will work in any scenario. Triple bred 116. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE.

Big-footed, extra powerful, proven cow family with three full sisters in embryo transfer. TH-FREE and PHA-FREE.

Purple Eclipse X Warhorse. A near replica of his sire with PHAfree status. Out of a proven Warhorse Daughter. A double bred Warhorse, purebred Shorthorn that is both TH- & PHA- free.

WE’VE GOT THE FEEDS TO MEET YOUR NEEDS.

Show Stopper™ Show Feeds start calves gaining weight and developing lean muscle on a sturdy frame, so calf and exhibitor can shine at show time. Start with Show Stopper Beef Grower (51406AAA) and finish strong with Show Stopper Beef Finisher (51408AAA). Both products are complete grain mixes in texturized form for easy, simple feeding. For exhibitors that prefer to use a pelleted supplement to mix with grain, choose Show Stopper Show Calf Concentrate (12100AAA).

Championship performance through feed technology is the signature of

MoorMan’s® ShowTec® Show Calf Feeds. The proven ShowTec feeding program uses the latest feed technology to provide the best balance of energy, protein, vitamins, and trace minerals to enable show calves to reach peak genetic and presentation potential. For calves weighing between 500 to 800 lb start with MoorMan’s ShowTec Cattle Grower (53326MUS). Then for a sleek, fast, efficient finish use MoorMan’s ShowTec Cattle Finisher (53354MUS). Both products are complete grain mixes in premium texturized form.

MoorMan’s ShowTec RumaFill™ (81080AAA) is a unique top-dress supplement specifically formulated to be fed during “holding” periods. Its high-fiber composition creates the “full look” and “capacity” needed to enhance expression in show calves that require maintenance on restricted intake of complete show feed or complete grain mixes.

Retiring Right

by Matthew E. O’Donnell, Smith Barney

Wealth alone is no guarantee of a secure retirement. It’s time to start thinking about what you'll need. Even if you are doing well, plentiful assets and a good income are probably not enough to get rid of your worries about retirement—at least not according to new studies of high net worth investors. Thousands of affluent boomers and Gen Xers studied by Wharton and State Street Global Advisors expressed fears about outlasting their money. You may be worried about preserving your standard of living in the face of market downturns, inflation and health care costs during a retirement that may last 30 years. In fact, 57% of those surveyed cited rising health care costs as their number-one concern. And if you’re in the younger half of those surveyed, a lack of traditional pensions and Social Security and Medicare safety nets is probably also on your mind. Experts agree that wealth alone is no guarantee of retirement security; saving too little "runs up and down the income scale and wealth scale," says Olivia S. Mitchell, an insurance and risk-management professor at Wharton. Comfortable living inevitably translates to spending. Though the wealthy save, Mitchell explained in the Wharton study, “people with high earnings also spend a lot” to keep the lifestyle they enjoy going. Reasons for concern Your retirement isn't likely to be the same as it would have been 50 years ago. The old adage was that you needed 80% of your current income when you retire—but nearly half of the 1,800 millionaires surveyed by the 2007 Phoenix Wealth Survey said they will need more than 100%. You may even be thinking of working indefinitely, at least part-time, in order to

stay engaged and support a comfortable lifestyle. Also, your life expectancy has increased, even from just a generation ago. Determining your retirement goals is a complex process—one that means taking the time to figure out what it is you really want now and down the road. The plan Worried as you may be, you may not have begun planning. 59% of high net worth investors have no formal written plan for their retirement goals—but a retirement analysis can help. Your Financial Advisor can run this analysis to assess your financial situation, your potential annual retirement income, your savings and investments and your tax situation. Then, it's time to analyze your retirement goals. Once you know what you want, your Financial Advisor can determine ways to help you get there, whether that involves altering your investment strategy, changing the amounts you contribute or something else entirely. The retirement analysis will provide you with a full report, including savings recommendations and sources for retirement income. Talk to your Financial Advisor about how a retirement analysis might benefit you. Questions or comments? I may be reached at matthew.e.odonnell@smithbarney.com or (312) 917-7464. Oklahoma Club Calf Association - October ‘08

Cool, fall nights, the last half of football is here. County fairs, State Fair of Oklahoma and the Tulsa State Fair of 2008 are in the history books. For some, it is the last time, for others it is the first time, but all you exhibitors and parents need to take it from me and my parents to cherish all of these memories, make them last a lifetime. These good times you have and friends you gain at the stock shows will last forever. Stock show people are a special group that binds as a family like no other group and as your life goes on, you will see more and more of what I mean. Scott Mullinx ,in the grand drive at the fat steer show, commented how judges everywhere talk of the quality at Tulsa, not only in the steers, but also with the young people at the halter, how courteous and polite they are to the judge and their fellow exhibitors, all the while, competing and displaying some of the best showmanship anywhere. Jeff Sargent, who evaluated our prospects at the Golden Driller show, stated as always, he was totally in awe by the quality of baby calves and our showman. He said anytime you come to Oklahoma, you expected to see the best of both, but he truly thought this might be the best of both he has seen. Joel Judge and John Rayfield each worked two long days, sorting through what they called as good a Supreme Drive as they had ever had the pleasure of working, making a special point that every breed was represented by a superb female of their breed, and as they slapped the Supreme and Reserve Supreme Heifer, it brought to a close another Tulsa State Fair. All you junior exhibitors don’t forget to thank your parents, grandparents, teachers and 4-H leaders that helped you get there. Also, don’t forget your buyers at the premium auctions. Remember, they are supporting you out of the generosity of their hearts. We need to let them know we appreciate them. As we put those baby steers on feed and start a new set of heifers, we are all looking forward to the NOC Fall Classic, Landrun Beef Expo, Oklahoma National Heifer Show, EOSC Breakout Show, Wichita Mountain Classic, Frontier, Poorboy Classic and AGR show coming up this fall. The point races are going strong, but there is still plenty of time before the Awards Banquet next spring. Above all, we want to keep our organization admired and envied by exhibitors all over the country. We are looked upon as a top, top group and we want it to continue that way. Looking forward to seeing you at the jackpots or the American Royal, Phoenix, Louisville or Denver, so until next time, may all your calves be champions and your experiences be memorable. Sincerely,

Lyle Blakley, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com

Wrestling with input costs! What are my choices? Article #3

When discussing alternative feedstuff choices the question when defining or choosing an alternative feedstuff is, alternative to what? I guess alternative can be defined “as opposed to shelled corn, corn silage, local hays or soybean meal” i.e. feeds considered as traditional feedstuffs. Three alternative feedstuff choices that have been around for 2 or 3 decades but that receive variable interest are urea, anhydrous ammonia and a product called Mix 30. Urea has been added to feedlot diets for over 40 years. However, many smaller Midwest feedlots have not considered urea as a protein equivalency source because its use necessitates a TMR approach. Major feed companies frequently add urea to protein supplements as a lower cost mechanism to increase the percent protein in the supplement. Even when priced at $800:ton (Article One, August, 2008 issue) the cost per pound of crude protein equivalency for urea is only 0.14¢:lb compared to soybean meal at 44.44¢:lb., DDGS at 40.0¢:lb or wet DGS at 27.65¢:lb of protein. Adding urea to finishing diets should be considered by more Midwest feedlots, but be sure to adhere to the rules-of-thumb presented in Article Two, September, 2008 issue. As hay supplies become more limited and/or more expensive due to increased hay acres converted to corn and soybean production, many cow-calf producers should reconsider treating low quality forages (corn stalks, soybean stubble, wheat or oat straws, etc.) with anhydrous ammonia (AA) to increase the roughages crude protein and TDN composition. At $830:ton (July 2008 article) AA has a cost of only 0.08¢:lb of crude protein equivalency. Ron Lemenager (Purdue University) as did others, conducted a considerable amount of research treating low-quality forages with AA during the 1980’s. Adding 3.0% AA to the dry matter weight of the forage can increase the TDN content by 10% and can double the crude protein concentration. For example, adding 3.0% AA to big round bales of corn stalks or to corn stalks harvested with a stacker can raise the crude protein value from 3 - 4% up to 6 - 8% and the TDN value from 45% to 55%. Treating low quality roughages with AA may allow the forage to fully meet a dry cows crude protein and TDN requirements with little or no supplemental protein or energy. Treating roughages with AA requires an accurate estimate of forage dry matter, a plastic cover sufficiently large to cover the bales/stacks of forage and a replaceable 100 gallon tank to capture the AA as it volatilizes under the plastic cover. It takes 3 – 4 weeks for the AA to stabilize within the forage prior to uncovering and feeding. Treatment with AA should be accomplished while daytime temperatures still reach at leaset 40°F. The following table compares two diets fed at ISU to beef cows in past years. The difference in feed cost between the two diets allowed for a value of up to $33:1000lb round bale of corn stalks. The DGS in the diet was wet distillers grains

(50% moisture). Treating cornstalks with A.A. saved $1.12:d in feed costs using current commodity prices. This $1.12 in feed savings allows producers to value cornstalks based on cost of harvest, transport and storage. Another feedstuff that has been around for a number of years is Mix 30 sold by Timberlake Sales, Springfield, IL. Historically, sales of Mix 30 have been limited to volume orders (semi-trailer loads) and Mix 30 has been promoted as a feedstuff for feedlot cattle. More recently, local distributors for Mix 30 have been contracted and Mix 30 may now be available in smaller quantities at a location (feed dealer) near your operation. Mix 30 is considered a protein- energy supplement ((16% crude protein, 10% fat) that has 130% the digestible energy (DE) value of shelled corn. It contains condensed distillers soluble (CDS), vegetable fat and a product referred to as ProtaFerm. Currently Mix 30 costs $123:ton if purchased in quantities of 6000 gallons or more (F.B. Springfield, Illinois) and $175:ton if purchased in smaller quantities. Recommendations for feeding Mix 30 in cow diets is forage plus 15 – 20% Mix 30 or feed 2 – 5 lbs. of Mix 30:day and free choice forage. General recommendations for including Mix 30 into feedlot diets is 5 – 12% of the total diet on an as fed (moisture included) basis. Mix 30 and other commercial supplements composed of alternative feedstuffs may help larger and smaller size operations lower feed costs. My next article will contain more sample diets we have fed at Illinois State University that contain higher inclusion rates of alternative feedstuffs. So, keep reading.
