ecently, the issue of shopping local has been weighing heavily on my heart. So I’d like to take this opportunity to share why supporting local businesses is so important.

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE 374 Lincoln Center Stockton, CA 95207 PHONE 209.477.4868

First, there are the reasons most of us are aware of: saving money on gas and keeping tax dollars here. At gas prices upwards of $4/gallon, I know we can all appreciate savings on fuel. Running your errands and shopping around town is much easier on your gas tank than driving to Sacramento or San Francisco for a shopping trip. Regarding tax dollars- as we all know, now it is more important than ever to keep our tax dollars here in San Joaquin County.

FA X 209.940.2741 EMAIL Chronicle@LincolnCenterShops.com ONLINE www.LincolnCenterShops.com Editor, Janelle Nelson Graphic Designer, Mari Tripp Contributing Writers, Danielle Hovatter Kelsey Roget Contributing Photographer, Nick Maragliano Deadline to submit newsworthy information from non-profit and charitable organizations is the 5th of each month for the following month’s issue. Submitting information does not guarantee it will be featured in print. To submit by email, please send to Chronicle@LincolnCenterShops.com. The Lincoln Center Chronicle is published monthly by Lincoln Properties, Ltd. and the Lincoln Center Merchants Assocation, and is distributed free of charge to over 57,000 homes in Stockton, Galt, Linden, Lockeford, Lodi and Woodbridge. Lincoln Properties, Ltd. and the Lincoln Center Merchants Association do not assume responsibility for the authenticity or accuracy of news materials furnished for publication.

But it’s not just about the money (although it’s important!!). Supporting the community you live in means so much more. It’s about doing business with people you know. It’s about being out and about where you live. When you’re shopping in your neighborhood grocery store, you’re seeing people you know and are connecting with them. You’re helping to keep Stockton, Lodi or whatever city you live in, a place where people have real relationships with one another. When you shop local, you’re helping to provide jobs for our citizens. In Lincoln Center alone, more than 800 people are employed throughout our 100 stores…and that’s just one of our county’s many shopping centers! This issue is so important to me because my life is so affected by local business. Without our Center’s hard-working merchants, I wouldn’t have this job that I love. And I know many of you out there reading this feel the same way. Like most of you, I understand the convenience of online shopping and the fun of making a day trip to the City. But my motto is SHOP LOCAL FIRST. And I challenge you to make that your motto as well….to make an effort to BE LOCAL. If everybody reading this did, it would make a huge difference.

s summer comes to a close and the leaves begin to turn, children across the country are packing up their backpacks and returning to school. And with the beginning of the fall semester, you may start to see that old familiar vehicle – the school bus – cruising the roads and highways again. Here are some tips for drivers who share the roads with school buses, as well as some easy lessons to teach your kids about bus stop safety.

DRIVING NEAR BUSES Follow these tips to help protect the children when you drive. t,FFQBOFTQFDJBMMZDMPTFFZFPOTUVEFOUTBTUIFZSFHFUUJOHPOBOE off the bus – stragglers might run! The most dangerous part of the trip, for kids, is getting on and off the bus. t#FBMFSUBOE4-08%08/JGZPVSFOFBSBCVTɨFSFTOFWFSB good enough reason to speed, and it’s downright careless when there are children nearby. t%POPUQBTTBTDIPPMCVTUIBUJTTUPQQFEUPMPBEPSVOMPBETUVEFOUT All states have laws that tell you under what circumstances you can and cannot pass a stopped school bus. Most buses actually have stop signs that display when children are getting on and off the bus. In general, it is not okay to move until after the bus’ red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins to move. t,OPXBOEVOEFSTUBOEUSBĂŻDMBXTBOETQFFEMJNJUTOFBSBTDIPPM bus and schools. Oftentimes, the laws change during school hours.

ith a passion for literacy and reading in the home, Angela Scannavino Karp, owner of Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique came up with the idea to host Story Time in her store. Children and their parents have a blast listening to stories and enjoying snacks. Angela finds wonderful readers for her books, including teachers and her Aunt, a retired reading specialist. Story Time at Sassy Pants is always exciting! Each time there is a theme‌for Easter, Sassy Pants hosted an Easter egg hunt, and in June, Batman and Supergirl made an appearance for superhero training! In December, Angela even had Santa’s elves read to the kids. Children of all ages are welcome to attend. This summer, Story Time was held weekly on Wednesday mornings. You can catch the last Summer Story Time, which is a Back to School Party, on Wednesday, August 1st at 10:30 am. This fall and winter, Story Time will be held once per month. The next one will be Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 am. For a complete schedule, visit their brand-new website: www.shopsassypants.com.
