Letter From The Vice President of Ideas

It’s 2012, and

what a great journey I

this has been!

’m so excited about another year of highlighting women business owners in metro Atlanta. It’s such an honor to be a part of People You Need to Know Magazine, an organization that’s dedicated to giving women entrepreneurs the recognition they so richly deserve. More than ever before, women around the world are coming together, forming business partnerships and making positive things happen. Forbes magazine has called women business owners, “America’s new job creation engine.” Diana Powell clearly stated, “Ninety percent of all revenues that women gain in their enterprises are reinvested into society, into educating their children, into healthcare programs . . . it’s a very interesting moment in this issue of investing in women and in women’s empowerment globally.” Yes, without a doubt, when women succeed, the nation prospers, so be sure to support the women in this magazine. It will help us to move forward and become a better nation.

...women around the world are coming together, forming business partnerships and making positive things happen. There are a few people in this publication who deserve special recognition. Without wavering, they continue to give us unshakable courage and the strength to remain steadfast and unmovable in the work we love to do, year after year. Dr. Mark Walker, Medical Director of Surgical Health Collective, Attorney Donald P. Edwards, and Attorney Peter Copeland have all supported us for many years. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Dr. Danielle Greene, President of Fabulous Smiles of Atlanta, for believing in the work we’ve been doing for the past 13 years. On this journey, it’s always a pleasure to meet people who willingly help us to shine when we need it most. It has been

our good fortune to work with Jennifer Holmes at J. Mont Studio, Ty Mitchell at Salon Allen Mitchell, and celebrity photographer, Paul Biagui. Above all else, I’m grateful for our fearless leader, Anthony “Spark Plug” Thomas, internationally known motivational speaker and publisher of People You Need to Know Magazine. For nearly 20 years, Spark Plug has remained passionate, and has always sought excellence when it comes to promoting and recognizing women business owners. This venture is much more than an advertising and marketing enterprise for Spark Plug; it is a powerful movement to shine the spotlight on women entrepreneurs and to help them succeed. As you turn the pages of this publication, and read the wonderful stories of the courageous and confident women who are striving to make a difference, I’m quite certain you’ll be inspired. When you call them to do business, please let them know that you found them in People You Need to Know Magazine. I wish you all good health, a bounty of love, supreme happiness, and success that is overflowing in 2012. heryl Hill’s son, Tyler, died too soon. At 16, Tyler was a tender-hearted boy who stood over six feet tall and weighed 215 pounds. He was an “A” honors student, role model, history buff, peace advocate and loved to play sports. Tyler was a hero at his high school for reporting a bomb threat. A champion of Type I diabetes, Ty would never serve in the military. His People to People student trip to Japan was supposed to be the opportunity of his lifetime. That excitement turned into devastation when Tyler’s life ended on June 29, 2007. His death was 100% preventable. “I want to make sure no

one walks in my shoes and has their child come home in a casket,” says Sheryl. In their son’s honor, Sheryl and her husband, Allen, founded ClearCause Foundation and work tirelessly to establish safeguards to keep our children safe abroad. Their Cause is Clear - keep America’s children and students safe on programs abroad in a $17 billion federally un-

regulated industry. A SafeTY app (Safe Traveling Youth) is under development while public policy is advanced. Sheryl is host mom to eight international students. She values global exchange. However, anyone can take your child abroad and anything can happen. No federally mandated qualifications, safety standards or public reporting exists to keep kids safe from many inherent dangers and risks. Young travelers have died, been abused, raped, abandoned, trafficked and even killed abroad. “We miss Tyler every day. His story is not the only one,” Sheryl says, her voice cracking with appeal. “We believe their lives, and deaths, have purpose for a greater good. Let’s make certain it doesn’t happen again. Please support ClearCause.” PYNTK 7

few Americans have been immune to the jolt of the recent economic crisis, the nation’s wounded war veterans have been hit especially hard. The combination of injury, unemployment, and waiting for disability claims to be processed, have many wounded veterans teetering on the edge of economic disaster. Glennette “Cookie” Haynes, president of Stephin Oubre Events and Interiors, decided to use her creative talents to bring some joy back into the lives of these unsung heroes. ”A lot of military veterans, especially the ones who come back wounded, face many financial challenges,” Cookie explains. “A lot of their money goes toward medical bills or trying to keep the family unit together. I think everyone should have a room in their home that is a haven. I wanted to use my creative abilities to create a beautiful space for them.” As president of Stephin Oubre, Cookie has many clients, including several professional athletes, from around the country willing to donate ‘gently-used’ or even purchase new items for her cause. In addition, Cookie also holds an annual coat drive. Her clients stretch across Missouri, Michigan, Texas, her hometown state of Louisiana, and as far away as the Caribbean. Cookie has also provided event planning and catering for famous clients such as the Isley Brothers and

“I think everyone should have a room in their home that is a haven.” Earth, Wind, and Fire. But whether people are rich or poor, Cookie believes everyone deserves to live in a beautiful environment. She works with the Faces of Freedom program, which provides candidates for her foundation. In her business, Cookie matches the décor to reflect the spirit and energy of the people who live there. She uses that same

creative energy to help produce amazing spaces for wounded war veterans. In addition to her work with military men and women, she also provides a room design for single parent families who are working but who don’t have the extra income to spruce up their homes. “I want to bring a smile to people’s faces,” she states simply. Dr. Taunya A. Lowe Fights for Equality of Services for the Deaf and Mentally Ill in Georgia D r.

Taunya A. Lowe, CEO of The Resurgent Group of Metro Atlanta, doesn’t know how to swim but when she had the opportunity to snorkel in Hawaii, that didn’t stop her from jumping in the ocean – with a life jacket of course. “I’m not going to let an opportunity pass,” she says, referring to herself as a cautious risk-taker and a visionary. “I see the plan, implement the plan, step out on faith, and make it happen.” That attitude helped her start her own consulting firm dedicated to turning concepts into realities. Taunya uses her background, with a doctorate in General Human Services, to specialize in training human service providers on best practices in the field of mental health and addiction. She also uses her experience and can-do attitude to fight for equality of services for the deaf and mentally ill in the state of Georgia. “I have a family member who is deaf and has mental illness issues as well,” she explains. “It has been a real challenge for her to receive services in the state of Georgia.” There are only five states with specialized services for those who are deaf and mentally ill and Georgia is not one of them. Taunya has been working with other deaf advocates and is determined to bring parity of services for people with all disabilities. Although finding the balance between work and play is difficult, Dr.

“I see the plan, implement the plan, step out on faith, and make it happen.” www.TheResurgentGroup.com

Lowe enjoys traveling, writing, and photography. She has combined those three loves to create note cards with inspirational and uplifting quotes. One of her favorite inspirational quotes that she embraces in her life is, “I

choose to see the beauty, the positive, and the possibilities.” To learn more about how you may get your own set of her debut collection of note cards, send an e-mail to orders@TheImpactExperience.org. PYNTK 11

Helps Katrina Survivor Find Success in Atlanta

J

anaye Taylor, Vice President of Operations at 1st Choice Credit Union, still gets emotional when she talks about the devastation she experienced when Hurricane Katrina hit her hometown of New Orleans in August 2005. “I lost everything in my home … plus two vehicles,” she remembers. “My Mom also lost her home. To go back and see your home affected by the floods with mold growing up your walls was very devastating. Even the pictures of my children when they were first born and many pictures of them growing up were also destroyed. But even today, I still give praise and glory to God that I have my life.” Janaye had fled New Orleans to stay with her daughter who lived in Atlanta, thinking it was just temporary. A few days turned into months and unsure of what her future held, Janaye began sending out resumes. 1st Choice Credit Union welcomed her with open arms and she began working for them in January 2006. “They showed me much, much love,” Janaye says gratefully. Janaye Taylor was born into the credit union business, so to speak. Her mother

n Janaye Taylor, Vice President of Operations worked for a credit union as a bookkeeper and Janaye went on to work for the same credit union, where she eventually became assistant CEO. “I am a veteran of the credit union movement,” she says. “I love the loyalty in credit unions. I’ve been working for credit unions for more than 20 years now. I love serving our members and I have a passion for educating them about their finances.”

Janaye isn’t all business, however. She describes herself as a sensitive and caring person, who enjoys spending time with her family. What’s one of her favorite activities? She enjoys traditional New Orleans second line dancing, which typically includes a brass band, jubilant dancing, and brightly decked out clothes. What better way to celebrate her success in Atlanta? s a father of two, Attorney Donald P. Edwards believes that children are indeed our future. Over the years, Don has been involved in trying to redirect the lives of young people, both personally and organizationally. He was Chairman of the Board of the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services, where a dormitory for boys in foster care was named after him. He was also Chair of the South Atlanta District for the Boy Scouts of America and received the 2002 Silver Beaver Award, the highest award issued by the Atlanta Area Council for volunteer service. One of the ways Don continues to make a difference is by participating and speaking at Career Day at various schools in the Atlanta area. Growing up in the 1960s, there weren’t many African-American attorneys as role models. “I want to give young people the opportunity to meet an attorney and learn what the profession is about,” he explains. “I want them to have an idea of valid steps they can take and all the opportunities and options that come with being a lawyer.” Growing up during a turbulent time in American history, Don understood the importance of becoming active in social change and he saw lawyers leading that change. Inspired, he began his career as a civil rights lawyer and was deeply involved in civil rights issues during the first 15 years of his career. He continues to fight for people’s rights by representing clients involved in automobile accidents, medical negligence, wrongful death, and personal injury claims. “I saw the legal route as a way to express my desires to be an activist,” he says. “I want young people to see how they can also make a difference.”

Attorney Karen V. Mills Empowers Young Women to Become Leaders A

ttorney Karen V. Mills, the Managing Member of the law firm, Mills Law Associates, believes in giving back. “It’s not all about me,” she says. “I want to be remembered as someone who cared about others, did things for others, and treated other people like I wanted to be treated.” One way Karen tries to make a difference is by empowering young women to become leaders. As a first generation college student who became the second African-American female attorney elected to partnership at one of the oldest Atlanta-based law firms, and who then started her own law firm, Karen can offer practical advice and wisdom to those just starting out. Recently, she became involved with the Coca-Cola/Spelman College Leadership Mentoring Program which helps transform young college students into global leaders. Karen also enjoys educating and helping others as a lawyer, especially in the area of entrepreneurship. “People are so excited about starting their own

business,” she explains. “I try to educate them to create a good legal and accounting foundation, be cautious, think things through, use common sense, and do it the right way. People get so focused on the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, they don’t think about some of the worst case scenarios.” Whether it’s helping her clients avoid costly mistakes or giving advice to first generation college students, Karen believes she was put on this earth for a reason. “Years ago, I learned that it is not about me, but how I can help someone else.”

“Years ago, I learned that it is not about me, but how I can help someone else.” Although Attorney Mills looks business-like in suits most of the time, she’s also a woman who enjoys traveling, hanging out with friends and family, and trying new things like cooking classes. Comedy movies are also on the list of things she enjoys. “Laughter keeps you going, so you must take time to laugh,” she says.

Ardra Tippett’s Foundation

Celebrating

“Something made with your hands, comes directly from your heart.” This was a favorite saying often repeated by the late grandmother of Ardra Tippett, owner of Cake Cafe Atlanta.

Ardra believes in that statement, not only in sharing her homemade sweets at her popular bakery, but also with her Taste of Love Foundation. The foundation provides birthday cakes and parties for children up to eighteen years of age whose parents are in shelters, deceased, or incarcerated. Ardra, whose own father was incarcerated when she was a young child, began the foundation as a way to bring to others what she did not have as a child – unconditional love. “The foundation comes from personal pain and tears, but also from a place of promise,” she explains. “I want to give these children hope and show them that somebody cares – sometimes not the people we think should care – but at least somebody thinks they make a difference.” Ardra has been baking since she was in the seventh grade and professionally for ten years. Three years ago, she opened her bakery which offers cakes, cupcakes, cobblers, cookies, gourmet popcorn, brownies, and soft-serve ice cream. Ardra has a passion for creating treats for people, believing that sweets make every day stresses in life more palatable. Cake Café Atlanta has quickly become a place for people to hang out, with Wi-Fi access, a small meeting room, and free

monthly customer appreciation activities. “I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be, doing what I am supposed to be doing,” she says. With plans to expand her foundation, Ardra also sponsors two local football teams, and would like to see

others become more philanthropic in the community as well. “People don’t need a lot of money or resources to help,” she says passionately. “They can impact a life by letting people know they care. We all need to help each other.”

ancy J. Lewis, president of Progressive Techniques, Inc., believes if you change the hearts of young teen girls, you can change their lives. Her program for middle-school girls, Divine Young Ladies, is beginning its fourth year. Nancy first directed her attention to elementary school children. However, when the mayor suggested she focus on middle-school aged girls who are at an important, pivotal time in their lives, she agreed that this was a worthwhile program that definitely deserved attention. “We work with urban girls who are at-risk and face challenges,” she explains. “My team of volunteers teaches them about character, self-esteem and how to love the skin they’re in. We also talk about the importance of a quality education and having God in your life.”

Provides Positive Role Models for Young Girls Although Nancy realizes she cannot save all the girls, if she can make a difference in just one of their lives, it is well worth the effort. In fact, many of the girls come back later and thank her for providing role models and changing the direction of their lives.

“My team of volunteers teaches them about character, self-esteem and how to love the skin they’re in.” Nancy’s belief in the possibility of changing one’s life through positive thinking is also reflected in her business, Progressive Techniques, Inc., with the motto, “Developing a Better You!” Her

business specializes in management development training, motivational speaking, and one-on-one business coaching. Nancy also launched a women’s entrepreneur seminar series four years ago called, “Transforming Women Entrepreneurs.” The quarterly seminars provide information and education for businesswomen and a place where they can connect. Whether Nancy is working with her organization, Divine Young Ladies, Fortune 100/500 organizations, government agencies, academia, or hosting seminars for businesswomen, she wants to help people find fulfillment in their lives and careers. “We are all unique and special and we all need to learn how to love ourselves, tap into our greatness, and find our purpose,” she says.

Encourages People to Achieve Their Goals “Live long and prosper,” says Renée Sattiewhite, a Star Trek fan and president of Sattiewhite Training Productions. In fact, Renée is passionate about helping people ‘prosper’ by achieving their goals and dreams. This is not only reflected in her business as a life and career coach, but also as co-chair of

the non-profit organization, the African American Credit Union Coalition Reaching Toward the Future Internship Program. The program prepares college students to become professionals by placing them in mainstream credit unions throughout the country. “I was asked to become involved in the organization because of my love for children and education,” Renée says. “It’s been a very rewarding experience. I have students come back and tell me how this program influenced their ability to achieve the status they’ve reached and the goals they’ve set for themselves.”

Success stories include one student who went on to become an associate professor at a university, another who is a registrar at a school of medicine, and two more who went on to become attorneys. Renée’s passion to help others succeed is also reflected in her business, Sattiewhite Training Productions, where Renée coaches people and helps them define their goals, improve their professional image, and develop a plan to propel them to success. Her coaching has helped many mid-level managers reach executive management and CEO positions, while others have transitioned

to different careers and started companies. Renée finds purpose and fulfillment in helping people reach their potential and transform their lives. “I’m proud that I am living my possibility of serving other people passionately,” Renée says triumphantly. “I help people uncover the gifts and talents they already have and make sure they have all the tools necessary for success.” Whether she is serving as president of her own company, as a motivational speaker, trainer, coach, or co-chair of the internship program, Renée strives to help everyone she meets ‘live long and prosper.’

Sebrena Sumrah-Kelly

Bridges a Global Community through Networking

Sebrena Sumrah-Kelly’s teacher in the small village in Guyana, South America where she grew up wrote on the 10-year-old’s report card: “Sebrena is an excellent student but she talks too much.” Sebrena laughs at the memory now because as president of Caribbean & American Business Connections (CABC) and Atlanta’s number one networker, that’s what she does best. She uses her talent for speaking to bring a global community together through personal and professional relationships. “Here in America we are such a diverse country,” Sebrena explains. “Many of the people here are from abroad. It’s important that the global connection continue. No matter where we live in the world we all have the ability to share our gifts and talents with each other.” Sebrena came to America with her mother in 1985 when she was 14 years old. Like many immigrants, her mother came to the United States seeking a better life. “We had to pave our own way and start from the bottom,” she says. “It made me appreciate all the opportunities here. I think sometimes people take that for granted. The happiest day was when I realized I could start a business by myself.” Sebrena is passionate about her networking organization that helps others strive for success and create genuine, long-term networking connections. CABC was originally for women, but has already expanded to include men. Sebrena travels to different communities to spread her message. Now her dream to expand overseas has come true. CABC will become part of a global company and have their first international event in the Virgin Islands in February 2012. “I’m proud that people have received the information in such a positive manner,” she says gratefully. “I’m proud that they are ready to start on this journey to share with others.”

experience. In 2002, Melissa’s boyfriend tragically died suddenly while playing basketball, collapsing from an irregular heartbeat. Melissa’s grandmother had recently died and her father was diagnosed with having cancer around the same time. “These events left a deep hole in my heart,” Melissa says. “I made a vow to God that if he helped me find purpose, I would help others find theirs as well.” Her personal loss became the genesis of her company, Velvet Suite Marketing Consulting Group, Inc., (VelvetSuite. com) a brand leadership firm on the pulse of human innovation. Velvet Suite helps companies unleash brand transformation from the inside out by harnessing the power of people. The company’s proprietary brand system called ID3™ has been the hallmark of success for clients, which include: global corporations, emerging enterprises, universities, executives, pro-athletes, entrepreneurs and more. Her life-changing experiences also inspired her first book, Brand Me, Make Your Mark: Turn Passion into Profit (Ambassador Press) and spawned a social media movement (BrandMeLive.com). “A lot of people and companies can tell you what they do, but our company helps people and organizations discover who they are,” Melissa explains. Her company has become wildly successful, with wellknown clients such as P&G, Time, Kraft and the National Football League. Melissa is an international on-air contributor to CNN, Huffington Post and Essence Magazine. She is an authority in global branding and personal transformation and is a member of the board of advisors for the World Brand Congress in Mumbai, India. With all the success, however, Melissa believes in paying it forward. As a college student, she served as coordinator of a nationally recognized mentoring program which was honored by President Bill Clinton. She now offers an apprenticeship program through her company called “Passion 2 Profit Youth Apprentice Program.” “Young people who’ve gone through our program went on to work as creative directors for ad agencies, marketing firms, CNN and more,” Melissa says. “They came as talented individuals, but it’s very exciting to be a part of their journey and to help them develop as a professional and as a person.”

needed to get her brother’s children acclimated to a new way of life. “I wanted them to have a better life since the first five years of their lives were spent in difficult circumstances. I knew that they were talented children

who needed direction to become the best they could be. They needed to understand … your environment doesn’t shape you; you shape your environment.” Jaunta speaks from experience. She faced her own challenges growing up in low income housing and later worked in a transitional school with troubled teens. Her experiences prepared her to help the children adjust from a tough Chicago neighborhood to the quiet suburbs of Georgia. The sacrifices have paid off. Her niece is graduating from high school this year with honors and she is looking at colleges to attend. Her nephew is looking toward becoming an “A” student, elevating to his senior year, and doing extremely well on the football team. She helps her clients find the same kind of success as they face their own challenges and stresses that come with change. “Many people are facing losing a job or financial struggles and most are starting over in an economy and market that has deep-sixed,” she explains. Jaunta enjoys teaching clients to create successful business plans and budgets. She also instructs them on attaining financing and grants, making intelligent decisions about their businesses, and stepping up to the next level. Pulling strength from her spiritual commitment, she is able to give her clients encouragement and a desire to succeed. Businesses are able to create jobs which are good for the economy, good for families, and good for the future.

However, people close to Lori see her as a nurturing, loving, giving person who strives to help others. Although she doesn’t have children of her own, Lori admits she’s a big kid at heart. She’s an

aunt and godmother who loves taking her nieces and nephews to the park. Her love of children combined with a desire to serve her community was the inspiration for founding the Live Healthy & Thrive Youth Foundation (LHTYF). LHTYF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, activate, motivate, and empower youth in the areas of academic achievement, health, nutrition, fitness, and overall wellness. “This foundation is my baby in a sense,” Lori explains. “I can help children realize they can have a better life if they choose to establish healthy habits now.” Lori had to make changes in her own diet and lifestyle to avoid becoming diabetic. High blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and diabetes were not only in her family, but a lot of people she knew suffered from the same health issues. Since bad habits often start young, Lori decided to try and change the vicious cycle. She also finds fulfillment helping business owners through her company, which specializes in advertising, marketing, and sponsorship sales. “I saw business owners trying to navigate the world of entrepreneurship who desperately needed to get results from their advertising and marketing efforts,” she says. Although Lori has accomplished many of her hopes and dreams with her foundation and business, she doesn’t feel like she’s finished yet. “I’ve been blessed and had many happy days, but I think my happiest days are yet to come.”

The Mind of Spark Plug

Magazine Publisher Shines Spotlight on Women Business Owners in Metro Atlanta People You Need to Know Magazine, Atlanta’s #1 magazine showcasing women business owners. What Men are Afraid to Admit They Know About Women.” Spark Plug believes “Men of influence should do everything in their power to give women the recognition they so richly deserve,” which is why his publication, People You Need to Know Magazine, is Metro Atlanta’s premier business spotlight magazine for women. Their yearly circula-

The support is something that women business owners really appreciate in metro Atlanta’s #1 Magazine Showcasing Women Business Owners In Remembrance of Robert Lee Thomas, Jr.

Not many men are willing to say that women are smarter than men, but People You Need to Know Magazine (PYNTK) publisher, Anthony “Spark Plug” Thomas, isn’t one of them. His business magazine shines the spotlight on the education, talent, beauty and brilliance of women. “After working with women in professional settings for more than 25 years, I’ve found women are smarter than men,” he says without apology. “They are better leaders, better team players, more creative, better listeners, more willing to work for the greater good, and more likely to share their wealth, time, knowledge, information, and ideas. In addition, women are using their female advantage to create millions of jobs.” For anyone who contests Spark Plug’s point of view, good luck. Statistics convincingly back him up. According to Forbes. com, women are America’s new jobcreating power force. There are 9.1 million women-owned businesses which employ 27.1 million people and contribute an astounding 3.6 trillion dollars to the U.S. economy. According to The Center for Women’s Business Research, the Metro Atlanta area alone has 185,313 womenowned businesses which collectively generate 39 billion dollars in revenues annually. The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) found that in spite of the recession, women-owned businesses continue to grow in Georgia. For Spark Plug, these compelling numbers are an indication that the 21st Century woman is on a momentous rise to the top and determined to uplift others along her way. She is showing and proving her worth in this male-dominated society in an undeniable way. Spark Plug says, “One reason I believe most men are slow to recognize a woman’s true worth is because of their deep-seated insecurities and fear that it will somehow take away from their own power.” This concept is one which he elaborates on in his new speech entitled, “A Woman’s Worth:

Atlanta, where women are starting more businesses than ever before. Entrepreneur and Atlanta Business Celebrity, Stormy Wellington, is one of those women who is thankful for the magazine and Spark Plug’s assistance. “You can’t even imagine how much you have helped me to build my business,” said Stormy on Spark Plug Radio. “And women, if you are

out there as entrepreneurs, you definitely want to get with Spark Plug because he will take your business to a new level.” “Spark Plug and the People You Need to Know Network is an amazing vehicle to promote your business and market your brand,” agrees new client, Taunya A. Lowe, PhD, owner of The Resurgent Group of Metro Atlanta. “I was ready to take my business to the next level but wasn’t sure exactly how. The following week, I met Spark Plug and did not hesitate to get my business featured in People You Need to Know Magazine.” Lorie Johnson, MD, President of Just For You Women’s Healthcare says, “I’ve seen my business grow by advertising in People You Need to Know Magazine.” PYNTK is not a magazine that sells conventional advertising, it’s much more than that. Since 1993, they have offered entrepreneurs and businesswomen hope, inspiration, opportunities, credibility, trust, and most importantly, recognition. Spark Plug’s favorite quote and the driving force behind his magazine is, “When women succeed, the nation prospers.” Spark Plug was inspired to support businesswomen because of the positive influence women have had in his life. “My wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunts have all been a positive influence in my life,” he says. “I am a better man today because of them. I honor women business owners as a way to say “thank you” to all the women, past and present, who have helped me on my journey.” Spark Plug is a member of the Atlanta Press Club and won “Best Promoter” at the New America Media Conference and has been the recipient of the Phoenix Award, Atlanta’s most prestigious honor for community service. He is also a US Navy Veteran, author, radio talk show host, motivational speaker, and world traveler. People You Need to Know Magazine can be found in the metro Atlanta area at Kroger, Whole Foods stores and online.

Barbara Rushing

Teaches Baby Boomers How to Bridge the Technology Gap Barbara Rushing, founder of Rush2Compute is a multidimensional woman. This self-proclaimed techie runs her own business, volunteers to help the destitute learn computer skills, participates in walks to raise money for heart disease and breast cancer, and loves getting in touch with nature. She’s also the mother of a senior in high school, and is excited about helping her daughter choose a college. Then there’s the Barbara who loves to dance. “I’m the first one to say, let’s have a party and dance,” she admits, laughing. Barbara has over 20 years experience in the corporate world, but is now living her dream as founder of Rush2Compute. The business offers a variety of services including networking, software and hardware installations, and computer repairs. They also offer computer classes for baby boomers and seniors with one-on-one sessions in the comfort of their homes or low-cost training sessions at retirement centers, Smyrna Community Center, and assisted-living organizations. “Technology is here to stay,” Barbara states. “It’s important for baby boomers and everyone to stay connected with the world, family, and friends through computing technology.” Barbara loves teaching the mature generation how to use Skype, Facebook and e-mail to keep in touch with family and friends. This also provides the opportunity to play games, pay bills online, and browse the Internet for research. After taking computer classes in the past and feeling too intimidated to ask questions, Barbara was motivated to start her own classes. She created a place where people felt comfortable, no question was too silly to ask, and patience was the rule of the day. Starting a business in 2009 during an economic recession wasn’t easy, but Barbara was determined to overcome any obstacle. She encourages others to have the same positive attitude toward learning new technology. Barbara says confidently, “You can do it! I can help.”

Atlanta’s Dental Angels, an annual event held at her office, along with other volunteer providers, who offer free dental services to the community. This confirms why Dr. Gloria was recently inducted into the International College of Dentists, an international organization that recognizes dentists who give back to the community. “It’s very rewarding to see people who had absolutely no teeth, walk out the door with a full set of teeth and an attractive smile as well,” she says. “They are so appreciative and thankful.” She will also be remembered by her patients for her compassionate attitude. Dr. Gloria strives to provide high quality dentistry, and invests in the latest technology to best serve her patients so they can have a dazzling smile. Dr. Clarke’s specialty is personalized care.

“It’s very rewarding to see people who had absolutely no teeth, walk out the door with a full set of teeth and an attractive smile...”

“I

want to be remembered as a giver and someone who is always there for others,” says Dr. Gloria Clarke, a dentist and owner of Greenbriar Dental Care. No doubt, this charitable woman will get her wish. She will surely be remembered by people who cannot afford dental work at Ben Massell Clinic, where Dr. Gloria does volunteer work, making beautiful dentures for people who sometimes have no teeth at all. She also hosts and sponsors

“Dentistry offers the best of both worlds,” she points out. “We see immediate results. We don’t have to wait months or years to see our patients get better or improve their confidence. However, prevention goes a long way. Most of the work we do is preventable. If people come in before something is bothering them, it saves so much money and time.” Although she loves her work, Dr. Gloria tries to find balance. To relax, she enjoys boating and also continues to find time for her volunteer work. “I believe we all have something to offer,” she says. “It may be in our field or just offering our time to the elderly or to children, but we all have something important to contribute.”

Dr. Monica Campbell

Encourages the Youth to Set Goals & Follow Their Dreams “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future,” said Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dr. Monica Campbell, co-owner of Campbell Dental Group, agrees with that statement. That’s why she’s involved with a few different service organizations for children, including the C5 Youth Foundation. This organization targets youth with high potential in challenging situations, inspiring them to achieve personal success and also preparing them for college. “We bring students to our office and they have the opportunity to ask us questions about our profession,” she explains. “They also shadow us and we sit down and talk to them about their dreams, goals, and aspirations.” Monica wants to be remembered for being a compassionate person, which is one of the reasons she became a dentist in the first place. “My mom had some dental-related issues that occurred very early in life,” Dr. Monica recalls. “She had self-esteem issues because of that. Once she found a dentist who took care of those issues, it changed her life. It was amazing to see that transformation.”

“We’ve had countless patients cry at the end of a procedure because we’ve made such a big impact in their life...” Because of her mother’s experience, one of the focuses of Campbell Dental Group is cosmetic dentistry. “Being involved in changing people’s smiles and perception of themselves is amazing,” she says. “We’ve had countless patients cry at the end of a procedure because we’ve made such a big impact in their life. It’s wonderful to have played a part in that.” Monica’s hopes for ‘building our youth for the future’ extends to her own 4-year-old son whom she adores. Instilling traditional values in him, along with an appreciation for other cultures, languages, and travel is high on her list when it comes to preparing him to meet the world and succeed. Although Dr. Monica Campbell has the ability to change other people’s smiles and improve their confidence, at the end of a long day, it is her son’s smile that inspires her to keep making a difference.

When she won Miss Teen Dynamic Beauty of Bergen County, New Jersey, Kim felt like she was on top of the world. However, in her junior year of high school, all her dreams seemed to come to a screeching halt when she became pregnant. “My family was crushed,” Kim says. “It was hard. Everything I was used to was taken away, like dance classes, recitals, and competitions. I thought my life was over. My grandmother, who taught me to always strive for the best, and my mother, told me I was going to do what I had to do … no welfare, continue with school, and move forward.” Kim was living with her grandmother who, with the help of her mother, babysat her child and supported her so she was able to graduate with her class. Kim got a job, got married, and had another child. She later got a second chance to live out her dreams, when she entered a competition and was discovered by a New York modeling agency. She was even featured in a Diana Ross music video. “I was tall and slim and had a real presence on stage,” she recalls. After a while, Kim divorced and became a single parent. In 1990, after putting together a successful fashion show, she founded McNair Productions. More phenomenal achievements soon followed. Kim was selected to be the casting director for NBA basketball star Shaquille O’Neal’s music video, and appeared with other models in the hit movie Passenger 57. She has received numerous awards, worked with celebrities as an event planner, and has helped non-profit organizations raise more than 2 million dollars. “I’ve loved the journey,” she says, grateful for her grandmother’s help in her younger years. “It’s been a great ride and I’m looking forward to more rewarding adventures in the future!”

Model and Fashion Director Strives to Bring Out the Greatness in Others

sk Renée Knorr which role she finds the most rewarding and the answer may surprise you. Is it a fashion model, an executive producer, a fashion director, or a golfer? Although Renée is all of these things, the answer is none of the above. “I’m very passionate about fashion, but I enjoy giving back,” Renée explains. “I love inspiring and empowering other women and young girls to celebrate themselves and their God-given talents. I love bringing out the greatness in someone else.” Renée works with the non-profit organization Future Seekers, which helps teens set and achieve positive goals. She has mentored more than 100 young teens in three years with this organization. In addition, she works with the (EWGA) Executive Women’s Golf Association. Golfing is another passion and Renée works as fashion and beauty director of The 19th Hole Magazine and Executive Director of The 19th Hole Fashion Fairway Runway Show. She empowers women to learn the game of golf while inspiring young girls to pursue a college education with the help of golf scholarships. “I am a mother of a beautiful 12-yearold daughter and she is definitely one of the reasons why I’m trying to make a difference, by shining the light on the future leaders of tomorrow,” she says with enthusiasm. Renée’s own successful modeling career began almost by accident. After losing 60 pounds, she was stopped on the street by a man who asked if she’d ever thought about entering a beauty pageant. Although Renée had never modeled a day in her life, she entered

the contest, and won an award. The little girl from New Orleans, went off to Atlanta, Georgia, and from there, she pursued her career in Chicago with the Johnson Publishing Company. Renée became an international runway model, modeling in over 32 states with Ebony Fashion Fair. She worked with designers such as Emanuel Ungaro, Tadashi, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Halston and others.

If all of that isn’t enough, Renée also has an inspirational book coming out in 2012, entitled “Soaring Beautifully without Limitations”. “I have but one wish,” she says. “I want to find a cure to bring happiness back into homes. If we can appreciate life and be thankful for what we have without comparing our situations to others, we’ll have more positive outcomes.”

Nicole Steele Uses her Transformed Life to Inspire Others The word “broken” describes the way Nicole Steele, founder and Executive Director of Diamond in the Rough, felt as a young teen. After her parents’ divorce, Nicole felt lost, empty, and rejected, which added to her low self-esteem, bad choices and unhealthy relationships. From that dark place, Nicole was able

In eight years, the organization has served over 3,000 girls, ages four to eighteen, with weekly group mentoring, leadership training, college/career coaching, family enrichment activities, camps and conferences. Nicole has watched many of the girls, she refers to as GEMS, change their lives, take on leadership roles, and find their purpose in life. Her vision is to expand the organization worldwide and to help others do the same through training, resource development and consulting. Her new book, Priceless: A Girl’s Guide to Uncovering the Beauty, Boldness, and Brilliance Within, will be released in 2012. “I am blessed to be living my purpose and finding joy, peace and fulfillment in the work I do,” Nicole says. “When my life is over, I want to leave the world a better place as a result of having been here.”

Carolyn Taylor Brings Independence to the Elderly and the Physically Challenged

C

“The one word my clients would use to describe me is trustworthy,”

arolyn Taylor, a registered nurse and owner of Choice Nursing Services, knows that the elderly and physically challenged expose themselves, their homes, and all they’ve worked hard for in their lifetime when they choose a home nursing service. “The one word my clients would use to describe me is trustworthy,” Carolyn says. “It’s my privilege to earn their trust, care for them, and assist them to be able to remain in their home with dignity and respect.” Carolyn loves her work and is inspired by the elderly and physically challenged whom she has watched over the years, overcome major obstacles. She remembers a young man she became friends with in nursing school who had suffered a stroke and had difficulty speaking. “After my rotation was complete, he was able to say goodbye to me,” Carolyn remembers. “He went deep within his soul and found the determination and drive to express himself verbally again. It’s amazing what the human body can do.” The name of her company, Choice Nursing Services, is an appropriate one since Carolyn feels the elderly should have a choice regarding how they want to live out their remaining years. Their only option shouldn’t be a nursing facility where they become just another number, she believes. They should have the choice to remain in comfortable and familiar surroundings with a respectable and trustworthy staff to care for them. Carolyn is grateful to be able to provide superior service to her clients. She turned her life around when she was laid off from her former job and found the rewarding work that she does now “I would have never dreamed in a million years that I would be where I am today,” she says. “It’s by the grace of God and the support of my parents, family, and friends that I am able to do for others, and for that … I am most proud.”

pyntk-2012.indd 68

Sharon Mathis, CEO of Insurance Associates Atlanta, is an astute business woman who worked her way up the ladder in the insurance business. She began working in customer service, then as an agent, until she finally achieved her goal of becoming a successful owner and CEO of her own insurance business. But there’s another side to Sharon. She’s also a giving person who wants to help others find their own road to success. That’s why she founded the non-profit organization, Empowering Minds, to help teens become acclimated to working in the corporate world. “When my daughter graduated from college and was looking for work, everyone wanted three years of work experience,” Sharon explains. “How do you get three years of experience unless someone gives you the opportunity to work for them?” To make sure other young people didn’t face the same quandary, Sharon began working with local high school students. One student worked for Sharon’s business in accounting for three years during high school and college. After graduating, she was able to land an accounting job and purchase her own home. “That’s the most rewarding part,” Sharon says. “Seeing students become young adults and move forward with their lives. Hopefully they’ll turn around, pay it forward, and help someone else.” Sharon also enjoys educating others about insurance. “People buy auto or mortgage insurance because the bank tells them to, but I want them to understand how insurance helps their business and protects them and their assets,” she notes. “I like to educate my clients on exactly what their insurance covers and where they might be exposed.” There’s one more side to this ambitious businesswoman: the devoted Grandma. Out of all her accomplishments, what is she most proud of? “My granddaughter, Jada” she answers.

Encourages Others to Love Their Lives, Achieve Their Goals, and Pursue Their Passions

“L

ove YOUR LIFE, Achieve YOUR GOALS, Live YOUR DREAMS…on THIS DAY!” This is the coaching philosophy of author and confidence life coach, V. Ivana Foster, aka The Confidence Architect. As founder of The Confidence Architect, an Atlanta-based life coaching practice, Ivana is dedicated to leveraging the lives of success-driven women everywhere. “While growing up, my mother once told my sisters and me, “Each of you were born with a silver spoon, however, they were out being polished.” Ivana has never forgotten this message. Ivana knows from personal experience the hurdles many individuals, particularly women, endure to change their lives and to grab hold of their very own “silver spoons”. Having successfully conquered her own self-defeating thoughts, Ivana began to construct a life full of success-driven thoughts and behaviors that lead to her current prosperity conscious lifestyle. Ivana shares, “The person you must first accept and fall madly in love with is with yourself.” As the author of three empowerment books and a powerhouse speaker with an “eclectic” presentation style, Ivana has motivated many success-

“The energy from a woman who has ignited her own burning passion for a deserved abundant life is so contagious...” driven individuals in both the public and private sector. She says, “I just like to keep the message real and relevant. The energy from a woman who has ignited her own burning passion for a deserved abundant life is so contagious; this is what I love about my ‘work’!” With 20+ years as a personal and professional life coach, Ivana is still blazing her own path. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Argosy University, and the founding member and Director of Continuing Education at the Jewell Jackson McCabe Emerg-

ing Leaders Institute, Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia. As a thriving domestic violence survivor herself, Ivana also sits on the Board of Women Healing Women, Inc., in Decatur, Georgia. Recently, she was awarded the Gold Medal for President Obama’s Volunteer Service Award. Ivana says, “You can have what you want if you only believe that it’s possible and focus on the belief.” She’s available for TV appearances, radio interviews and speaking engagements about abundance in life, relationships, and career success: 866-643-8886.

Educates Students About Safe Texting “How many of you have ever received a nude picture of a hot chick from a friend?” Marie-Antoinette Burrell, “Atlanta’s Queen of Texting,” isn’t shy about capturing the attention of students. After many students raise their hands proudly, Marie-Antoinette, president of TalkText Mobile Solutions, explains how those nude photos could land them in jail or affect their future by preventing them from getting a job. Then she asks, “Who thinks getting a nude picture is cool now?” Not one hand goes up, and MarieAntoinette knows she got through to them. “That’s the rewarding part,” she says. Her Texting Organization Against Distracted Driving (TOADD) was founded to teach young people how to use cell phones responsibly.

Marie-Antoinette is also an author. She wrote a series of children’s picture books entitled, Mobile Phone Land, to provide pre-cell phone education, about the dangers of driving distracted, sexting, cyber bullying, and to inform kids about the importance of using technology responsibility. To further impress young minds, she plans to create a Miss TOADD mascot to visit schools all over the United States. With the aid of donations, community partnerships and sponsors, TOADD has become a driving force for educating and saving young lives. “The non-profit organization was the perfect balance to my business in the mobile industry,” Marie-Antoinette explains. “I teach kids about the future of technology and explain the possible dangers we face at the same time.” Marie-Antoinette got interested

in the mobile marketing business when her son started a high school fraternity. She learned the best way to communicate with students was texting. That inspired her to go back to school and eventually start her own mobile marketing business that also develops smartphone apps and QR codes. Whether Marie-Antoinette is running her own business or teaching kids how to use cell phones responsibly, this enthusiastic techie couldn’t be happier. “Technology is always evolving and we must evolve as well,” she says. “I love the work I’m doing and I love my life.”

I teach kids about the future of technology and explain the possible dangers we face at the same time.

Introduces a Breakthrough Cosmetic Procedure for a More Youthful Appearance cosmetic surgeon at Cobb Wellness Center, specializing in anti-aging and cosmetic medicine.” Ultherapy is a single treatment for most people and only takes about 30 to 60 minutes to perform.” Patients will see some immediate results with full results seen after three months. The procedure is noninvasive without any cutting, so there is no downtime. Although there can be some discomfort, topical numbing and nerve blocks may be used to help.

or women looking for a non-surgical way to tighten skin, lift eyebrows to give eyes a more open appearance, tighten the jaw line and neck area, as well as decrease fine lines and wrinkles – look no further. A new procedure, Ultherapy, enables practitioners to direct sound waves deep under the skin to the same tissue normally addressed in surgery. Ultrasound energy is used to “lift” the face, neck, brow, jaw line, and lips and stimulate collagen. “It’s the first device like it,” says Dr. Linda Kelley, M.D. and

Aside from cosmetic procedures, Dr. Linda also has a special interest in hormone balancing, age management, and holistic health. She became frustrated with the limitations of traditional methods addressing poor nutrition, stress, toxins, and imbalances. Dr. Linda decided to open a practice which emphasizes wellness, disease prevention, stress management, and total health. Naturally a curious person, Dr. Linda loves learning about new procedures and treatments to help her patients. She also enjoys counseling patients who wish to be active partners in their care. “We are cutting edge and offer personalized care,” Dr. Linda notes. “We take time with each of our patients and get to know them. I love to see the transformation when people feel better, whether it’s because they feel more energetic from treating hormonal imbalances or from cosmetic treatments.”

Dr. Lorie Johnson

Obstetrician/Gynecologist

r. Lorie Johnson, an obstetrician/gynecologist with her own practice, Just For You Women’s Healthcare, wanted to help pregnant women who came to her office with limited resources. Some were having a hard time making ends meet; others were in abusive relationships and had nowhere to go. “I wanted to help, but was limited as a doctor within the confines of my practice,” Dr. Lorie explains. Thus began the idea for hosting the World’s Largest Baby Shower, a fun event that will include a maternity fashion show, entertainment, speakers, and vendors selling items for babies and children. The event will be held March 24, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Strong Rock Christian School. All the proceeds will go to two local organizations that help pregnant mothers in need. Dr. Lorie can relate to young struggling women. While she was trying to get through medical school, she had no money, no car, and was raising a threeyear-old daughter alone. Overcoming all the obstacles and setbacks, Dr. Lorie moved forward to achieve her lifelong goal of becoming a physician. She is committed to improving the health of women, passionate about educating her patients, and takes time to listen to all of their questions and concerns. She recently made another dream come true by redecorating her current location, formerly a furniture store, into an office atmosphere that is warm, friendly, and truly inviting. In addition, she is writing a book that will be published next year entitled, Doctor, Is This Normal?, which addresses health concerns women are afraid to ask. Lest you think this ambitious doctor, who wants to be the next Dr. Oz, is all work and no play, Lorie confesses she’s a big kid at heart. “I love Disney World and roller coasters,” she admits.
