TO LIVE WITH US Pyhäjoki, known for its pure nature and energy, has been built in the middle of coastal Northern Ostrobothnia. The municipality lives on the lap of the sea and the river. Here nature is near people – and everyday services are easily available. Floating into the Bay of Bothnia, the River Pyhäjoki with its foaming rapids has become a very popular site for fishing and paddling. When a traveler passes through the seashore villages towards inland, the scenery varies from wide fields to nearly untouchable deep forests and grand windfarms. Friendly and genuine people, a viable home amid increasing job opportunities and services, a modern breeze of internationality. That is Pyhäjoki.

The pupils go either to one of the three small schools in the villages of Pyhäjoki or to the central school, Saaren koulu, where 7th-to-9th-graders learn as well. Because of the small group sizes and the calm learning environments, the children may enjoy the rarity of individual teaching. To the youngest students, the municipality provides with more teaching hours than in the average Finnish school. The ways to school go by easily through cycle ways, peaceful village roads or on school buses.

THE KUULUMISET NEWSPAPER The Kuulumiset Newspaper is read every week from cover to cover. The upper secondary school students edit the paper in which you may check out what happens in the main street, read interesting articles, and find the latest offers at the local shops.
PUHTO Kittipuhto, Teeripuhto, Pietipuhto… We have those puhtos. Puhto is a sporadic Finnish word, used in Pyhäjoki. It refers to a huddle or a cluster of houses, a corner of a village. Which of the puhtos ye live in? THE LAMPER EEL A half of the people in Pyhäjoki consider these round-mouthed treats of water to be incomparably delicious snacks. The other half will not even taste them. Decide for yourself!
THE GOOSE The goose stands in the coat of arms of Pyhäjoki. It refers to the Hanhikivi (Goose Stone) erratic block, located in the Cape Hanhikivi, where Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant will be build. The big erratic block may have gotten its name from migratory geese that had been resting on it – who knows? Hanhikivi is thought to be the borderstone of the Treaty of Pähkinänsaari in 1323.

THE RIVERBANK ROADS The weaving riverbank roads are placid jogging routes, fitting for biking, and particularly for floodwatching in spring. The banks were built with shovels in the 1950s to prevent the flood waters from rising too much.

PAUHA The word Pauha is glancing in many contexts: the Pauhasali Auditorium, the Pauha-Matti and Pauha-Maija nominations, the Pauhalla statue... It is an old Pyhäjoki-word which means in English: a herring shallow where waves are roaring loudly. Thus the verb pauhata translates freely into a verb roar. “You went to the pauha on a pauha boat and brought home the most plentiful catches.”

ST. RIVER Pyhäjoki stands for a saint river or a holy river in English. The youngsters came up with the nickname St. River in the 1990s. Whether skaters, school kids or the skating school kids invented it – we do not know. The main thing is that they came up with it!
