Bring Back Our Summer Break, Now!

Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

As it has been since we started publishing about 10 years ago, we’re not ready to end our summer break and start “working” again. Every time someone mentions the first day of school or registration (for anything!) I put my hands over my ears and pretend I’m not listening. It’s like getting through the first week of school or going back to work after a long break. The first edition of PANORAMA in September is always a tough one. Our interns are not ready, the sales staff is busying driving kids to and from school and I’m trying to find something to fill the pages with. We spent most of our summer at PANORAMA’s Peninsula headquarters staring at a computer screen. We backed up 5.5 terabytes of data and installed a new solid state boot drive that’s going to speed things up. Our mighty MacPro computer had been slowing down the last few months, and two of its four backup hard drives had failed - so upgrades had to be made. And though the old Big Daddy Nikon camera is now eight years old with more than 600,000 actuations, it seems to be taking better pictures than ever. The old man holding the camera just points and shoots. The camera does all the work. He’s really just a figure head

Is That Microphone On? . . .

The Rolling Hills Little Leauge 11-yearold All-Star team took time out to be interviewed for a PANORAMA webcast video after winning the District 36 and Section 4 tournaments this summer. around here. Someone should tell him to wear long pants every once in a while. A clean shirt would also be a good idea. The summer edition of PANORAMA that came out in July had a lot of good stuff in it. It was highlighted by another 11-year-old All-Star team from the Peninsula that went deep into All-Star tour-

nament play. Like the Palos Verdes Little League team from two summers ago, the Rolling Hills Little League All-Star team won the District 36 and Section 4 All-Star tournaments and competed in the SubDivision 3 tournament in Upland. The real accomplishment for any All-Star team is doing well in the district tournament. District 36 contains some powerful leagues including Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and our four Peninsula Little Leagues. Just like doing well in Bay League competition at the high school level, once you get past our local district, our All-Star teams have the ability to go a long way in tournament action. The girls’ softball All-Star teams also had a great summer. Playing in district, sectional and state tournaments through July. We are happy to report that former Silver Spur Little League president and community leader William Wang has

been elected president of the Peninsula softball league. We are expecting a resurgence at the league and are hoping more Peninsula girls stay home and play on our local diamonds. But enough of spring and summer sports. It’s the fall sports season, and we are geared up for a lot of soccer, football, cross country and everything else. We’ll be at the PVIT Open House this weekend, and we’ll be at the Rolling Hills Estates City Celebration at Ernie Holwett Park next weekend. Today is one of the biggest days on the Hill with the legendary AYSO Picture Day happening throughout the day at Peninsula High. Beginning this weekend, thousands of Peninsula soccer kids will be taking over every open field from Ladera Linda to Malaga Cove - and as we have always done here at Panorama - we’ll try to be at every field and at every event that’s happening on the Peninsula. Summer’s over, it’s back to “work.”

Panthers Hear The Roar . . . Peninsula High football fans were out in force for the first game of the season. Editorial and Advertising deadline is 6 p.m. Monday the week of publication. The Best Field In The South Bay . . .

Combined with the new track, the Peninsula High athletic field is the best in the South Bay. There is nothing better than a well-kept, natural grass field for football, soccer, lacrosse or any other sport or activity. The green plastic grass and recycled tire pellets that smell like car wax just don’t compare to the real stuff.

PV Strikers with coach William Zhang, (far right)

Big Loss For The Peninsula . . .

We got the word a few weeks ago from long-time AYSO coach Vince Frasso that William Zhang had died over the summer. Zhang had been one of Youth Sports News and Panorama’s biggest contributors and supporters. He was always around to shake hands and say hello at soccer matches and PVBA games. I would also run into him at Math Field Day, the STEM expo and the District Science Fair. His leadership and involvement with our community can not be understated. He played a big role in the athletic and personnel development of many children in our community. He will be missed. — Tom

PV Student Competes On International Level Soccer

• Palos Verdes High student spends summer competing on the Philipine national soccer team. Palos Verdes High student Erin O’Connor represented the U16 Philippine women’s national soccer team in international competition this summer. The 15-year-old sophomore was looking forward to summer, but didn’t realize she would be spending it abroad in the Philippines and China. After tryouts in June, she was one of 30 girls selected to participate in an intensive four-week national team training camp. O’Connor has been living and training with her teammates in the Philippines since July. She was one of 20 players selected on the final roster of the U16 Philippine

Women’s National Soccer Team and one of two goalkeepers who traveled to China to compete at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U16 Women’s Qualifiers. The team is in Group B, along with India, Northern Mariana Islands, South Korea and Malaysia. If they win the top spot of this Group, the team will play in the AFC Championships in 2017. O’Connor has been playing soccer since she was five years old. She’s honored and proud to represent the Philippines, the place of her mother’s birth, which as a population more than 100 million people. At home, she plays for the Slammers FC EGSL team in Newport Beach and hopes one day to play in college. — email reports

Panthers Open New Chapter With A Win Football

• The Peninsula High varsity football team opened the fall sports season with a 48-6 win over John Glenn High School. New coach, David Young, guided the Panthers to victory by using a bruising running game on offense and an aggressive and advantageous defense. The varsity Panthers seem to have a complete roster of healthy football players this season, and it would not be a surprise if they are 5-0 before hosting Mira Costa on Oct. 7. Peninsula traveled to Sotomayer High Friday and will host Torrance this week.

• The Angry Birds junior tennis team rises to victory again. After winning the sectional championships in May, the Angry Birds team of 12-year-olds combined forces with the Orange County Beasts to compete against Northern California at the USTA 34th annual Gar Glenney Cup tournament in Newport Beach last month. The Gar Glenney is the state’s Junior Team Tennis championship between the Southern California section champs and Northern California section champs. The teams consist of three age group divisions of both boys and girls. Cara Hung represented the girl’s team for the Angry Birds and helped her teammates capture a 6-3 victory over the Northern California squad.

PVIS

For the boys, the Angry Birds were Dylan Charlap, Kelly Giese, Cody Hashimoto, Aaron Hung and Christopher Tarvin, all from the PV and surrounding South Bay areas. Ben Jorgensen, another PV resident and Angry Bird member, was unable to attend the tournament. After the two squads were knotted up at 4-4, Hashimoto and Tarvin were able to close out the final doubles match, giving the SoCal boys a 5-4 victory and earning the SoCal 12’s the state championship. Despite a strong showing by the SoCal 12’s boys and girls, NorCal was able to capture victories in the 14’s and 18’s divisions, earning them the Gar Glenney Cup. — email reports
