Girl Scouts Take On 56-Mile Sierra Trek Awesome • Backpacking, Bushwhacking, and Brook Crossings – Girl Scouts Say “Bring It On!”

By Renee Grenier “I didn’t know Girl Scouts backpacked.” That was the cashier’s response after I told her I had just completed a 56-mile Trans Sierra backpacking trip with my daughter’s Girl Scout troop.

Yes, Girl Scouts backpack!

On July 30, 2017, six Girl Scouts from Rancho Palos Verdes-based Troop 12345, better known as “Shark Bait,” and four female adult leaders were dropped off at the Farewell Gap Trailhead at Mineral King in Sequoia National Park. The girls ranged in age from 11 to 15.

The original plan was to enter at Marvin Pass Trailhead in Sequoia National Forest, summit Mt. Whitney on Day 7, and exit at Whitney Portal on Day 8. A telephone conversation with a ranger to check trail conditions a

week before our scheduled departure revealed that a portion of the planned route was passable only with crampons and ice axes. Clearly, it was time for Plan B. “No problem,” we thought, we are Girl Scouts.

Undaunted, the Scouts pulled out their maps and compasses and guesstimated a route that would ultimately rejoin the trail, we hoped.

We soon learned that when you change your permit at the last minute, the most popular trails are unavailable.

As it turns out, so are the less popular trails. This left us the least popular, and often unmaintained trails.

Undeterred, we enthusiastically began our adventure. The first two days went smoothly. Then we hit Day 3 – the day the trail disappeared.

Day 3 was behind us, but we had plenty of souvenirs to remember it in the form of scratches and cuts from the overgrown vegetation.

On Day 6, we lost something nearly as important as the trail—our water filter. One of the Scouts was filtering water from the stream when the hose and prefilter fell into the water and were swept downstream.

After an unsuccessful search, the group circled up, and the Scout who dropped the filter shook off her emotions and led a brainstorming session

for what we should do now. The Scouts decided to use backup water treatment tablets, boil water to be used for cooking since our fuel supply was good, and use one of the adult leader’s slow mini gravity water filter. Problem solved, and a valuable life lesson learned on how to persevere through adversity.

Each day brought a new set of challenges. It rained every day. Sometimes it just sprinkled for a few minutes, and other times it showered, complete with booming thunder. There were many river crossings, some with thigh-deep water. River crossings resulted in wet feet, which in turn led to blisters.

The wet winter ensured that water was plentiful in the Sierra this summer, and so were the bugs. Mosquitoes were thick in some places, making mosquito head nets the fashion statement of choice.

In light of these conditions, did the Scouts enjoy the trip? Absolutely! Do they want to participate in a long-term backpacking trip next summer? You bet, they are already planning it, and brainstorming for an international backpacking trip in 2019.

Labor Dispute Stresses Seniors PANORAMA Disruptions Palos Verdes Peninsula

• Contract dispute between local school board and teacher’s union adds more drama to the first weeks of school.

By Nina Li During the first weeks of school, students normally are adjusting to their schedules and learning how to get around their campus. Seniors are basking in their upperclass titles and are begin to prepare their college essays and applications.

This year, however, the routine has been upset by an announcement of negotiations between the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD) and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Faculty Association (PVFA).

The District and the Faculty groups collaborate to create solutions to various problems and cultivate a sound environment for each student.

In an update sent out by the District, it states that both parties have convened and have talked about the negotiations.

With the rumor spreading that students’ teachers were not writing recommendation letters for their students, the some seniors from both Peninsula High and Palos Verdes High went into panic mode, questioning what was going to happen next.

“The issues are adding unneces-

sary stress to an already stressful time for many seniors,” said Peninsula senior Aaryanna Dawson-Sarabia.

“On top of having to decide which colleges to apply to and filling out applications, we have the threat of not receiving college recommendation letters to worry about, said DawsonSarabia. “ Also, without grades being posted we would not know how we are doing in our classes. The grades for this semester are important because they are the last grades that the colleges we are applying to will see,” she said.

The email released by the District states that “No high school student will go without letters of recommendation from PVPUSD” along with the fact that activities in the classroom will continue as per usual and remain on topic.”

“It is strange because all of my teachers and the faculty at Peninsula have almost been hiding it, as if it is not happening,” Peninsula senior Kelly Van Boxtel said.

“It really has not affected me yet, other than the shock of it. Going into senior year I was hoping for a pretty laid back, easygoing and fun year and this definitely put a spin on things, she said.

“The part that has hit home the hardest would be not having clubs. I always look forward to Homecoming, the Walk for Life Carnival and attending my friends’ club meetings, but with a strike I am worried that they may not happen

this year,” Van Boxtel said.

Both the district and the teachers do not want the negotiations to affect the students and are working hard to resolve the problems and come up with an effective solution that both parties agree to.

“I am not one that checks in with my grades too much to begin with, said Palos Verdes senior Kaori Shimizu, “[However], regarding the recommendation letters, it did affect me a little bit.”

Said Shimizu, “One of the teachers I wanted to write a recommendation letter for me is not writing one as of now.

I am not too worried, however, for I am sure the district and the teachers’ union will resolve this soon. They know the blame would be turned to them later on if they do not resolve it.”

On Wednesday, teachers, students, parents, and community members gathered at the PVPUSD board meeting where they were able to voice their opinions about the problems at hand.

The meeting room had an overflow crowd of those who were eager to express their concerns and those who were there to support their colleagues.

Speakers addressed the overall issues of the pay differences and called for action from the district.

“Honestly, all the students will be at a disadvantage,” said Peninsula senior Irene Kim. “Not knowing your grade is frustrat-

PV Football Begins Season With Big Wins Football

• Sea Kings faced local powerhouse Narbonne Friday night, and look forward to the Bay League games coming up.

By Jenna McFarland The Palos Verdes High School Sea Kings played its first home football game of the season Friday, Sept. 1, and scored a 34-0 victory over Long Beach Cabrillo. The win, along with the 36-14 win over Westchester the week before in the first game of the season, indicates a good season ahead for the Sea Kings.

The players are optimistic about the upcoming games and, according to senior running back Joey Ford, “This season I expect us to go undefeated in Bay League, as we have done in past years.”

The team this year is smaller in numbers and younger in years than in the past, with at least 40 percent of the team made up of sophomores, which brings difficulties along with benefits.

According to Ford, “This year’s team is slightly smaller that last year, but quicker with better chemistry because of the lack of separation between the senior class and underclassmen.”

Senior Cooper Gardner agreed with Ford’s statement when describing the smaller team.

“I think this team is special because of the bond that has grown between each individual player due to the fewer players.”

Due to the fewer number of upperclassmen, the responsibility of leading the team has fallen into the hands of a small number. However, Gardner thinks that “the senior class does a great job of leading everyone, and it really brings us closer together.”

Gardner attributes much of the success of the Sea King’s to the character of the team. “Ultimately, it’s our team chemistry and effort that allows us to win games.”

Teachers and students alike spoke of the problems they thought the district should address, and of the impact these problems inflict on all grade levels.

The Sea Kings football future looks bright for this season, with dedicated and talented players determined to have a winning season and reclaim victory over Mira Costa after the close loss last year.

Gardner and Ford both specified their excitement to play and beat Costa, “since there is some unfinished business to take care of,” as Gardner put it.

The Panorama Season Begins . . . The old Big Daddy Nikon camera guy began the “Picture Taking Season” with two trips down (and then back up) to the Peninsula High Pit for flag football last weekend.

PV Graduate Sails To Hawaii For Summer Sailing • Summer after graduation Sea King competes in sail race to Hawaii.

By Sarah Liu For 2017 Palos Verdes High School graduate Kyle Collins, being around the water seems to run in his family. His grandfathers were commercial fisherman, his father was a long time

sailor and his brother was a member of the Palos Verdes High School Sailing Team.

However, before Kyle found his love of sailing, he was a motorcross racer, at the age of four.

As he grew older, he realized that motorcycles got bigger and more dangerous. In addition, the two-hour drive to the track every weekend was difficult.

On Wednesday, August 30, the Panthers were met with a warm welcome at their first pep rally of the year.

The pep rally consisted of an array of events, from a raffle to dance performances to even a lip dub video made by the Panthers football team. The pep rally concluded with a chant taught by Peninsula’s new lead Panther, Principal Brent Kuykendall.

It is a big year for Kuykendall as he begins his time as the principle of his own alma mater. Although he has been the principle of both Ridgecrest and Miraleste intermediate schools, overseeing a high school is an immense task to take on.

Going into the school year, Kuykendall is trying to hold back his excitement of being the principal of “one of

the best schools in the state,,” and that he is “both proud and humbled” by this new opportunity.

As the Panthers flooded back on to campus, Kuykendall said he expected “the first week of school to be filled with excitement and anticipation.” To his great pleasure, his expectations were met.

As Kuykendall explained, “Schools are supposed to be vibrant and full of energy. I was looking forward to seeing the students returning and seeing the campus come alive again.”

Although it is a substantial change for Peninsula’s students and staff, everyone welcomed their new principal with open arms. Kuykendall said he appreciates the support that he has felt throughout the Panther community.

High School Sailing Team Inspires Future

. . . Continued from Page 8 He was introduced to sailing by his father and his brother. One summer, they signed him up for sailing classes at the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, and he fell in love with the sport. He has continued to sail ever since.

Kyle began to sail competitively at the age of nine, and eventually became a part of the sailing team at PV. The Sailing Team consists of 25 students, who attend joint practices with Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and Port of Los Angeles High School students.

Students do not need to own a boat to sail, the boats that are used to practice and race in are owned by the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club.

Sailing is considered an intense sport, with coaches comparing it to “riding a bicycle up a steep hill as fast as you can while playing a game of chess and getting wet with a garden hose at the same time.”

Sailors have to keep track of how they maneuver the boat, the boat’s speed, and finding wind patterns for a tactical advantage.

Earlier this summer, Kyle competed in the 2017 Transpac race to Hawaii.

The race started at California’s Point Fermin and finished in Honolulu. The 2225 mile race took Kyle and four other team members just over 11 days.

Collins had never done a race this long. His only other experience close to the race to Hawaii was when he sailed 1,000 miles on the East Coast.

All of the boats competing in the race had to go around the west end of Catalina Island, but it was a navigational challenge from that point on as each Please continue on Page 17 . . .

Local Girl Scouts Thrive In The Sierra Wilderness . . . Continued from Page 3 some of the high points of the trip: abundantly green meadows and flowers, making it to New Army Pass (elevation 12,310 ft.), and naming the marmots we encountered throughout our journey. In case you are wondering, most of the marmots were dubbed “Frank,” or “Robert Uppey Downey, Jr., Jr., II.” After eight amazing days and 56 miles through the Golden Trout Wilderness, we finished our odyssey during a hail shower at the Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead in Horseshoe Meadows in the Inyo National Forest.

Spending a week “off the grid” in the wilderness, carrying all your equipment and food on your back, and working

together with your troop-mates, fosters self-sufficiency and builds a sense of self-confidence, which is particularly important for young women.

The Scouts faced every challenge head on, and not only prevailed, but thrived. Way to go Girl Scouts!

Kuykendall finished his first week as the new head Panther with a schoolwide assembly at which new staff members were introduced and the guidelines for the year were laid out.

The Panthers are excited to start the new year with their new principle.

Kyle and his crew even sailed during the night. At night, they had a watch system where there were always three crew members on deck sailing the boat and two crew members down below resting.

They would be on deck for three hours and off for two hours. Unfortunately for Kyle and his team, their

day, which led them to fall to last place in their division.

Regardless, the race had to be considered a success as they arrived safely in Honolulu.

Kyle will continue to sail in college, at California Maritime Academy. While the format of sailing stays the same in high school and college, college sailing is more competitive. Kyle encourages those who are interested in sailing to find a local yacht club or find a coach to see what they recommend.

AYSO United Wins Premier Soccer Tournament AYSO Club

• AYSO forms new teams to compete at club-level tournaments.

New this season, AYSO has put together club-level te,ams that are referred to as AYSO United.

The South Bay United Teams are composed boys/girls from cities all over the South Bay, who will compete with club level teams in tournaments.

There are only a few AYSO United clubs in the Los Angeles area.

This past weekend, the newly formed South Bay United girls’ U11 team for AYSO won a Premier ClubLevel Tourney in San Diego called the Riptide Summer Classic.

Even though this club has only played in three tournaments, it was able to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit to win the match.

The winning goal came from Sasha Skylar with less than one minute left in the game, as the South Bay United defeated the SC BLAST, 3-2.

This summer the team also made it to the finals of the AYSO National Cup in Lancaster.
