RIS Student Wins First At Mathcounts State Finals Mathematics

• Nathan Kim, an 8th grader at Ridgecrest Intermediate School, recently took first place overall at the Mathcounts State Finals. The contest at UC Irvine included over 200 participants that had to first advance past the qualifying chapter rounds. Kim also achieved top honors in the AMC8 math contest, becoming the only student in the nation to get a perfect score in each of the past three years. Kim finished his Mathcounts career as the top scoring 6th grader in the California State Finals, the top scoring 7th grader, and now the top scoring student overall as an 8th grader. He also took first place overall in the Countdown round, beating all competitors in a one-on-one format. “Nathan answered challenging math questions faster than you could even read them. The UC Irvine math professors could not even keep up with Nathan,” said Eric Hendrickson, Ridgecrest coach. “It’s been fun hav-

Extremely Famous Peninsula People Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• Everyone should know by now that PANORAMA only publishes photos of the most Extremely Famous Peninsula People. Remember, the old Big Daddy Nikon camera guy will not ask you to pose for a picture, so you’ll have to scream and yell to get his attention because sometimes he’s deep in thought about where to get the next batch of chocolate chip cookies. (priorities) There are a lot of extremely famous people on the Peninsula ,and we’ll have another round of photos coming up in the next edition on May 24.

SJF School Students Excel At Science Fair

Science

• St. John Fisher School had two students place first in the California State Science Fair hosted by the California Science Center. In a state brimming with talented, motivated students, placing first is nearly impossible, but two local students did just that. Eighth grader Bridget MacMillan placed first in the Applied Mechanics and Structures category with her project titled “The Effect of the Mount Point of a Parachute on the Ride Height of an Acura RSX Land Speed Vehicle.” She determined the optimum location to mount a parachute on the vehicle to ensure the most stable braking process. Eighth grader Christopher Iso-

zaki placed first in the Environmental Engineering category with his project titled “Reducing Energy Used by Computers Utilizing Green Technologies.” For his computer, Chris created a self-sufficient cooling system that did not use any wall outlet supplied energy. His creation reduced the energy the computer used by 32 percent. — email reports

Ben Meyers Takes The Lead . . .

Ben Meyers, a 17-year-old junior at Peninsula High, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 191, didn’t have time to run in the RIS 5K as in years past. As this years’ race director, he was too busy running around managing the 8 a.m. race at the South Bay Botanic Garden, a fundraising event for Ridgecrest Intermediate School that was also his Eagle Scout project for Troop 191. He led a small army of volunteers and handled countless details to help ensure that the race, in which over 800 runners participated, went off without a hitch. From pre-planning in January through the day of the race, Meyers and his volunteers logged in 270-man hours working on the event. Most Scouts do local improvement projects in order to attain the highest rank in scouting, but Meyers wanted to do something different. Having Type 1 diabetes, Meyers had worked on several Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation charity walks before and those experiences became an inspiration for his project. Meyers said he really liked the idea of doing an event that raised money for a local school and that promoted healthy living and community spirit at the same time. 190 Takato Wakuda 191 Andy Kim 192 Isabella Real 193 Abbie Sedillos 194 Sei Kato 195 Julia Naya 196 James Maeder 197 David Noh
