PV Prepares To Host Invitational

Track & Field

• The Palos Verdes Track and Field Invitational is back for its second year Saturday, April 5th

Story by Duncan Reid Teams will be traveling from all over California and Nevada to compete at the beautiful Palos Verdes High facilities. The meet will feature two non-standard events, the Sea King sprint medley and the PV Quadrathon for budding decathletes. The meet has a community mile at 10 in the morning to start the day, followed by high school racing, beginning at 10:20. Relays, individual races and field events will be held all day, concluding with the boys’ and girls’ 4x3200m and 4x400m relays at approximately 5 p.m. South Bay schools sending teams include Chadwick, Mira Costa, Torrance and Redondo Union. The Palos Verdes boys will try to dominate the distances, but the runners from Fountain Valley, such as David Abraham and Hunter Galino, could also factor in, as well as a host of Redondo and Mira Costa athletes. Miles Irish and Casey Celestin could break stadium and meet records. Both seniors are coming off strong performances at the Mustang Relays last week, and a trio of seniors, Luke Letwin, Lucas Robinson and Ian Jones, are also running well. PV High’s Robert Franklin has also emerged as one of the best sophomore milers in Southern

California. On the women’s side, Palos Verdes and Mira Costa will both have strong teams entered, so look for the women’s races to produce some fast times. Top PV performers should include senior Skylar Thiel and juniors Cassidy Webber and Anna Pruter. Freshman Camille Hines has already qualified for the CIF meet in the 800m, and McKennah Genovese is among the top 10 3200m runners in Division III. Fountain Valley’s Amber Bragdon and Natalie Grohmann are strong as well in all distance events. St. Mary’s High School and their strong hurdles squad will look to dominate the races, as Kyra Anderson is ranked No. 2 in CIF Division IV in the 100HH, but look for hometown talent Maile Davis in that event. In the sprints, PV boys’ 4x100m relay squad has upset a couple of our local squads in early Bay League action and could pull off the upset here as well. Green Valley (Henderson, Nevada) brings their top sprinters, Ian Mack and Emani Salih. Sierra Peterson of St. Mary’s is the top-ranked sprinter in her division. Jacob Diamond and Cate Ryant will do double duty in the jumps and could contend for medals. Allanah Hughes of St. Mary’s is strong in both jumps. Mira Costa always has a good pole vaulting program. Christine Nguyen of Fountain Valley is one of the top discus throwers in Orange County and should be a favor-

Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

About all these race results . . . OK, so we really didn’t know what we were getting into when we asked the high school coaches to send us ALL the results from the track and swim meets. Not that it’s a bad thing, but next time we might reduce the size of the copy so we can get a few more pictures in the paper. We still plan to include more high school sports coverage and more non-sports events happening on the Hill. Every issue is sort of like an experiment, we add new things and new combinations to see what works. That’s what’s fun!

Shrek Set To Take The Stage With Song And Dance At PV High • The musical comedy "SHREK THE MUSICAL" will be presented by the Palos Verdes High School Drama Department for eight performances, April 11-19. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, "Shrek The Musical" brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to dazzling new life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand…and his name is Shrek. Nominated for eight Tony awards, including Best Musical, and featuring a terrific score of 17 all-new songs, "Shrek The Musical" is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone.

“Shrek the Musical takes us on a hero’s journey, and along the way we learn about dealing with isolation and loneliness, risk-taking and adversity, companionship, and breaking stereotypes”

said Palos Verdes High School drama teacher Nicole Thompson, who also directs the show. Vocal direction is by Sue Secrist, with choreography by Kirsten Chandler.

The production stars Max Havas as Shrek and Kyra Johnson as Fiona. Other principal actors include Grant Unno (Donkey), Terren Mueller (Farquaad) and Alex Gordillo (Pinocchio). The 33-member cast also includes a large ensemble of talented students in featured roles. Performances are April 11-12 and 17-19 at 7 p.m. and April 12-13 and 19 at 2 p.m. in the MPR at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road in Palos Verdes Estates. Following each matinee performance, audience members are invited to meet the cast in the theater courtyard. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and $20 for premium tickets, which includes a light snack and beverage. Tickets can be purchased at www. pvhsdrama.com or at the door if seats are still available. For further information, visit the website, or call (310) 3788471, ext. 237.
