Spelling Bee

• Cornerstone School students places 5th in L.A. Country spelling bee competition. Kapil Dheeriya placed fifth out of 108 contestants at the Scripps Los Angeles Regional Spelling Bee. Those contestants were selected from a pool of 23,000 students in L.A. County. Dheeriya, a fifth grade student, displayed remarkable calm, while spelling against mostly middle school students. He demonstrated a mastery of the "Spell It" list words, and when the competition proceeded to the "off-list" words in the later rounds, he kept up handsomely. He spelled “scarab” in the 11th round to move on to the 12th round at

11:30 p.m. with only five kids left. Kapil was the only elementary school participant who made it that far. He was eliminated on the word “Kodiak”. The competition, which had started at 6:30 p.m., went on past midnight - the longest ever. Cornerstone Elementary School’s innovative programs and parent participation model have proven quite effective. Recognized as a California Distinguished School, Cornerstone is consistently ranked among the state’s top performing elementary schools. Cornerstone has been nominated again for this recognition for 2014. — email reports

Peninsula High Sets Date For Fundraiser Black & Gold • Fundraiser supporting Peninsula High School athletes set for March 15. Peninsula High School’s Athletic Booster Club (ABC) will host its 23rd annual "A Black & Gold Affaire," Saturday, March 15, 6 p.m. at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. This community event is the largest fundraising effort for Peninsula High’s physical education/athletic department. The community is asked to support this fun-filled event by purchasing oneof-a-kind auction items. With the state still facing financial challenges, there continues to be a significant shortage of funds for athletics and physical education. The PVPHS Athletic Booster Club supports 25 sports with over 68 teams

comprised of various levels from frosh to varsity. The ABC works directly with the athletic director, school administrators and coaches who help the ABC identify and prioritize specific needs for each sport. The ABC provides much needed funding for field and facility upgrades, coaches and trainers, team equipment, safety gear, and support for physical education programming. According to Paige and Arch Asawa, booster club co-presidents, “a good portion of the money raised at this event will go toward maintaining and repairing facilities used by most of Peninsula’s students, whether they take PE or play a sport. The rest will go toward other expenses required to keep the school’s outstanding athletic programs going.” With last year’s sponsorship funds, PVPHS ABC provided baseball with
