Out of Thin Air The concept of building a deck park over Woodall Rodgers Freeway may have originated in the 1960s when Dallas Mayor J. Erik Jonsson decided to recess the freeway. Many decades later, the concept of Klyde Warren Park was born. In 2004, Sheila and Jody Grant, Texas Capital Bank and The Real Estate Council all contributed $1 million each to fund a feasibility study and provide support to begin the Park project. Later that year, The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation was formed and led the project from design to completion. Numerous government and private sector leaders created an exemplary public-private partnership, raising a total of $112 million – $20 million in bond funds from the City of Dallas, $20 million in highway funds from the state, and $17 million in stimulus funds. The remaining balance of $55 million was provided by generous philanthropists who call Dallas home.

SUSTAINABLE Klyde Warren Park transforms a former freeway into 5.2 acres of lush green space in the heart of downtown Dallas with 37 native plant species and 322 trees. In July of 2014, the Park achieved LEED Gold Certification, which recognizes the Park’s use of high-efficiency mechanical equipment, low water-use plumbing, storm water control and filtering, and a subgrade reservoir that can collect and store up to 12,000 gallons of grey water from the Park’s water features for treatment and reuse. The Park’s restaurant, Savor Gastropub, uses geothermal energy for cooling and heating, along with high-efficiency light features.
