According to a Brookings Institution report, students, particularly those considered disadvantaged, starting the new academic school year have achievement levels lower than where they were at the beginning of summer break.
Students face summer learning loss in reading and mathematics each summer break. Summer learning loss is seen disproportionately in lowerincome communities, often communities of color. Reasons for this include a need for more knowledge surrounding summer programs, disinterest, and a lack of transportation. As a result,
Cynthia Mickens Ministries, Inc. Summer Learning and Feeding Camp exist to mitigate learning loss and child hunger during the summer.
