PURE NEWS It is an exciting time for Purity. One year on from our last newsletter there is much to report. In this edition we take a look back at some of the achievements of the past year and offer you a taste of things to come. So pour yourself a chilled, creamy pint of Purity and take five... The past year was a whirlwind. 2011 brought: one new lorry, two TV appearances, three gastro-beer extravaganzas, four awards, five gold rings (ok, that’s a fib), a sixth birthday and seven new faces. There were events a-plenty and stacks of charitable support throughout the year. In November we were pleased to report sales up by 26% year-on year and last December we had our best festive season yet with sales up 44%. Over 100 new customers came on board from independent pubs and retailers to pub chains and supermarkets. This year we are building on our successes with a new brew house, improved logistics, a new website and lots of events including a brand new music festival. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. We love meeting our customers and fans and we are continually humbled by the feedback we receive. You mean the world to us and make us proud to do the job we do. Cheers! Paul Halsey

BREW HOUSE UPDATE...

Last year we reported that our planning application for a new brew house had been approved. Although it has taken a little longer than anticipated, it is now full-steam ahead with construction. It is a big project, so we will be tweeting our progress and posting Facebook updates along the way. Follow / Like us to find out how we are getting on. Flo and the brewing team cannot wait to experiment with their new equipment!

BEER AND FOOD We like our food almost as much as we like our beer, so we try and combine the two as often as possible. Last year we put on gourmet food and beer pairing evenings at Simpsons and Carters of Moseley. This year we will be at the usual beer and food festivals but keep an eye out in autumn when we will host a new gastronomic event. Are you a budding chef? We are trading free beer for recipe ideas for our new website. Visit our website to find out more.

RECORD BREAKER Calling all ladies! On March 29th Purity, Malmaison and Beer Beauty are joining forces once more to present the annual FemALE event and this time it is set to be a record breaker. Taste six very different and truly amazing beers exquisitely paired with gorgeous food and go home with a goodie bag stuffed with freebies. This will be the biggest event of its kind. Do you think the Pauls can handle it?! See our website for booking details.

CULTURE CLUB Last year’s festivals were blinders. Mostly Jazz, Napton and Moseley Folk artists were blessed with golden sunshine, Supersonic was otherworldly and the free tasters over the Birmingham Comedy Festival went down a storm. Social media comments prompted the Town Hall and Symphony Hall to start stocking Purity beers – the first local products to make it onto their bars. This year keep an eye on the Lunar Festival in Tanworth-in-Arden. We love our jobs!

STARRY EYED Over the past few months we have had to set our TVs to record twice to capture our appearances on The Alan Titchmarsh Show – courtesy of our lovely pal Marverine Cole AKA Beer Beauty – and our piece on BBC’s popular Countryfile. The team got to meet the legend John Craven when he visited the brewery and other local places in search for the modern day (Pure) gold, frankincense and myrrh for the programme’s Christmas special.

Our location has its perks, one of which is having the world-class RSC on our doorstep. The newly transformed theatres stage phenomenal performances and the restaurant and bars serve food and drink to match. Try the resident mixologist’s Petruchio’s Passion: a cocktail featuring Mad Goose. Definitely not just for pre-theatre. www.rsc.org.uk

The Stag at Offchurch has been building quite a collection of awards recently and deservedly so. A fine country pub, it is nestled in a small village on the outskirts of Leamington. Its chefs are alumni of the renowned chef Raymond Blanc and the food is out of this world. Booking is essential. www.thestagatoffchurch.com

PURE ECO AND GOOD STUFF Have you seen Flo’s new bike? It helps him de-stress and get to work in a green and healthy way. We hope he is going to use it at one of the events we are supporting this year: the Stratford Cycle Festival for Cyclists Against Cancer. Historically we supported many causes on a smaller scale but this year we decided to focus our efforts on two very special, local charities: The Shakespeare Hospice and the Cycle Festival. Amongst other things we will be donating money for pints sold and undertaking sponsored activities. Suggestions for silly outfits now being accepted.

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR BEERS Whilst we are fortunate enough to be involved in lots of exciting activities, the most important thing for us will always be our beer. It is our reason for being, our ultimate joy. It is what unites us. Some time back we made a decision to focus on our regular beers and not to develop seasonal ales. We wanted to concentrate on consistency, quality and perfection. It was very humbling for our efforts to be recognised recently with three awards from SIBA: one for each of our beers. Well done to Flo and team – keep those award-winning beers flowing.

CAKE ANYONE? We recently celebrated our sixth birthday. To mark the occasion, Claire baked two scrumptious cakes for the team – we love Claire! In the past six years we have come a long way. Last November we reported an increase in sales of 26% year-on-year, alongside a healthy £200k net profit. That was followed by the best festive period to date, with sales 44% up. This year we are making significant investments in people (see back page), production, logistics and marketing. Holly always extends the warmest of welcomes at Carters of Moseley, and Brad’s stunning recipes never fail to impress. He even made a bread containing our Mad Goosecheck our website for the recipe. Afternoon tea is available at weekends, if you can bag a reservation. cartersofmoseley.co.uk

The Victoria and its sister venues offer some of the quirkiest places to drink and dine in town. An old theatre pub with its very own ghost, The Victoria offers food by the sensational Soul Food Project served with cask ales through to cocktails. Their parties are legendary. thevictoriabirmingham.co.uk

Our suppliers are hugely important to us, especially our hop merchant Charles Faram. Paul Corbett, hop guru, is a regular at the brewery and often lends a hand at our events. He’s particularly keen when it comes to our FemALE events. We wonder why… wellhopped.co.uk

PURITY PEOPLE We are a small team at Purity and we all roll up our sleeves to keep the beer flowing. Mashing out is part of the initiation process and it is all hands to the deck at Christmas. Last year we welcomed Ben, Ollie and Joe to the brewing team and Jill to marketing. More recently, Ian joined to manage logistics, Sam came on board to support accounts and Simon started as the new Head of Sales and Distribution. We have grown from 16 to 19 people and we are bursting at the seams. But our investment in people is vital. With a new brew house on the way we are preparing to bring more beer to more people without compromising on the exceptional customer service and quality we are known for. Later in the year we will be looking for volunteers for events. There may even be a summer placement up for grabs. Keep an eye on our website for the latest opportunities. Next time you call or pop by the brewery say hello to our new Purity people. They are ever so lovely.

BOREDOM BUSTER! Many of you will know Claire: she warmly welcomes all who visit or call the brewery. You’ll spot Claire whizzing around fixing problems and organising all. Her memory is phenomenal and her baking is second to none. When it is a Purity person’s birthday Claire bakes a cake for everyone. Lucky us! Here she is with a selection of her finest. Spot the differences! There are five to find.
