BONOBOS DP3: CHANGING BEHAVIORS ME 313 FALL 2009 PURIN PHANICHPHANT MATT SULLIVAN COACH: MIKE STRASSER

Along with the Common Chimpanzee, the Bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. Bonobos are more sexually active than Common Chimpanzees. They also do not seem to discriminate in their sexual behavior by sex or age, with the possible exception of abstaining from sexual intercourse between mothers and their adult sons.

ON THEIR HEALTH PATTERN... MICHAEL, 37 THE OFF-AND-ON, BACKAND-FORTH ELLIPTICAL MASTER

“I lose momentum and fall off track when I get super busy with stuff or when I start to feel like I am getting close to injuring myself [from over exercising].”

“What works for me is to have a long-term strategy of keeping myself healthy instead of getting on short-term diets that abruptly reduce my weight.”

SCALE IS RELATIVE. LONG TERM IS MORE SUSTAINABLE THAN SHORT TERM. HIGH AMPLITUDE IS BAD.

ON WHAT THEY LOVE AND HATE... “I hate the thought of [going to the gym]. It’s pointless, completely pointless. Gyms are BORING and that’s the problem with American’s definition of working out.”

CARLTON, 38 THE RIDE-MY-BIKEEVERYWHERE VEGETARIAN

LIZA, 42 THE GLUTEN-INTOLERANT GYM-HATER

“The key for me is to find things that I like to do and to eat. That makes it a lot easier... Diet and exercise doesn’t have to be an obligation. It should be something that’s enjoyable.”

WHAT DOES “HEALTHY” REALLY MEAN? (ACTUAL VS. PERCEPTUAL) HIGH CONTROL DOESN’T NECESSARILY TRANSLATE TO “HEALTHY” INTRINSIC VS. EXTERNAL MOTIVATION

ON CALORIE COUNTING.... MICHAEL, 37 THE OFF-AND-ON, BACKAND-FORTH ELLIPTICAL MASTER

“Calorie counting isn’t unreasonable – I was convinced by the doctor that it’s a skill to be learned, but I don’t know how to stick to it and it doesn’t fit with my actual lifestyle.”

“I use and iPhone app called ‘Lose It’ and lost 50 lbs, but I don’t know if I want to stick to it forever. I’m starting to go by my feeling now.” GEORGE, 48 THE “NOW I NEED TO GET FIT” VENTURE CAPITALIST

BONOBOS DP3: CHANGING BEHAVIORS ME 313 FALL 2009

JEONG, 41 THE BIKE-TO-WORK FATHER OF THREE

“I know that record keeping is important – I have time for it; I just don’t have the energy to do it.”

ON BONOBOS AROUND THEM... “My wife definitely affects my diet – I cook more when I’m with my wife.”

MICHAEL, 37 THE OFF-AND-ON, BACKAND-FORTH ELLIPTICAL MASTER

JOHN, 36 THE GENETICALLY FIT GRAD STUDENT

“I go out and eat to socialize, so it’s more about the socialization part and less about what I actually eat.” “[My wife], when she’s around, loves to grab something to eat late at night and I would always go with her.”

“We have definitely looked into the social aspect of health. Unfortunately I can’t share that with you.”
