The 5-piece strayed from typical song structures and instead explored the outermost reaches of the collective process of improvisation. Madeleine Peyroux & Band announces oneoff date at The National Concert Hall

F

ollowing her sold out Olympia Theatre show last year, Madeleine Peyroux has announced a oneoff live date with her band at The National Concert Hall on November 20, 2018. Madeleine Peyroux's extraordinary journey is one of the music industry's most compelling. Eight albums and 22 years since her debut Dreamland, Peyroux continues to challenge the confines of jazz, venturing into the fertile fields of contemporary music with unfading curiosity. Peyroux's new album, Anthem, finds the singersongwriter collaborating with writers/musicians Patrick Warren, Brian MacLeod and David Baerwald, who are also the basic rhythm section players on the album. Together, they cast a sober, poetic, and at times philosophical eye on the current state of the world. Anthem is Peyroux's "biggest project to date", with the artist investing many months of hands-on involvement in the studio, "exploring processed sounds and editing in post tracking. Special in that it was written

with the group of musicians/writers who also played on it, "this album was about discovering the original songs as they were being recorded" and mastering the courage to "let the songs choose their own path." The new album includes several songs bearing Peyroux's distinctive, instantly recognizable style including On My Own and Sunday afternoon, but Anthem's spirit was that of exploring new styles whilst resting safe in the knowledge Madeline Peyroux states that "if you are loyal to yourself, there should always be a thread running through your music." 09

Galants Follow

Dave Simpson

ade up of members David Kennedy, James McDonald, Colin O'Dwyer and Ruairi Paxton, Dublin-based band Galants have been bouncing around the scene for a few years now, turning heads across Ireland with their intoxicating noise-pop sound. Drawing influence from the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Swervedriver, the creative quartet have already released a string of stirring songs via Bandcamp and now they're back with a brand new single entitled "Follow". The second track to be taken

from the foursome's forthcoming sophomore EP, "Follow" is said to reflect on the psyche of the crowd and pressure to use the decisions of others as a mental shortcut to navigate life. It begins with a bracing drum beat before a fantastically feisty riff sets in alongside a light yet enlivening serenade which becomes more vigorous going into an engrossingly melodic chorus at the end of the opening minute. A salvo of superbly forceful guitars bridges the gap from here to another endearingly gentle yet dynamic stanza that maintains a riveting rhythm as 10

the whole thing paces purposefully in the direction of an alluringly laid-back instrumental breakdown in the latter half of the third minute. It's not long until the guitars and drums begin to grow energetic again, setting the scene for a seductively spirited climactic refrain. The result is a remarkably rousing and accessible amalgamation of pop, rock and shoegaze that doesn't exhibit a dull moment from start to finish. Be sure to investigate "Follow" for yourself along with the rest of Galants' discography on the band's official Bandcamp page.

Spotlight Q&A

Jared Dylan

Interview by

Danielle Holian

You’re back with a brand new project of a short film and soundtrack Consequence. What inspired this experience?

Overall, this would definitely be the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on. Our goal is to deliver more than just music but provide an experience. Once Kevin got involved, the idea of a short film, visualizing the concept of Consequence, became a natural fit.

This project was inspired by my own experience.

How did the opportunity arise to make a short film?

I understand Consequence, is a concept album, what inspired the storyline?

I have been connected with Kevin Sharpley, the creator of The Beach Chronicles, since my time in Miami and we have been looking for an opportunity to collaborate. After showing him the Consequence EP, he was immediately inspired. He created a character based on me and the rest is consequential.

And you worked with The Beach Chronicles on the film, which is animated, who approached who with this project? And how was the experience overall?

The Consequence soundtrack tells a universally relevant story of self-awareness and acceptance. Something we all have to achieve to survive in this world. The storyline for the short film follows my character [Kid Dylan] in The Beach Chronicles universe as he, simply, lives his life.

And how does each song lead into each other? Is there a continuation from start to finish? 12

The songs follow a chain of realizations. First,

You began the year supporting Aslan on tour, and now supporting the likes of Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Ryan Sheridan, The 4 of Us, and headlining a few dates of your own. How is the Irish audience feedback?

you have to accept yourself. Then you can accept those around you. And finally, you can come to terms with the balance of it all. The final song on the soundtrack is just meant to be fun. Some harmless entertainment serving its intended purpose. To entertain.

I feel very welcomed by Ireland. These are some of the best audiences I’ve ever had the pleasure of entertaining.

And who or what influences your music, production and lyric wise?

And what’s been a favourite experience from this tour thus far?

I pull influence from everyone, everywhere, every song I’ve ever heard, every movie I’ve ever seen, every experience I’ve ever had, and every emotion I’ve ever felt.

The best part of this tour has been the pubs and songwriter nights. I love playing for those audiences. I get to connect with the people and interact while I’m on and off stage.

How was the recording and writing process for this album? I spent a year writing songs; many of which were not planned. I tapped a vein of creativity and drained it for all it was worth. At the end of a year, I had a hand full of songs that I felt worked together to capture a complete concept.

And how does the soundtrack relate with the film?

The film shows a man on a journey of selfdiscovery. He doesn’t know who he is, where he comes from, or why he is here. What is right? What is wrong? Who gets to decide?

Jared Dylan

Where does Consequence, fit into your life today? There is a consequence for everything I do. It is a never-ending journey of self-discovery.

What has been a highlight of this Jared Dylan era thus far?

There have been many highlights; but I have to say, it has been very rewarding to make something that represents a piece of myself and be able to share it with the world.

A Star is Born

W

Film Review by

Tommy McCormack

ith all the attention on pop-superstar Lady Gaga's starring in this film, let's take a moment to appreciate her costar and director Bradley Cooper, here making his directorial debut. It is just as well that he is apparently a humble, gracious person in real life. That makes it less easy for men to enviously hate him for being not only a handsome good actor but also now, in addition, a more-than-decent director- and singer. This 2018 remake is the fourth version of A Star is Born, after the 1937, 1954 and 1976 versions, and follows a similar plot about a talented woman falling for a similarly talented male celebrity, and becoming a

14

celebrity herself as she rides his coattails while he, in contrast, falls from grace. Each version's story is modified to suit contemporary celebrity culture, and the same applies here, to a warts-andall, emotionally raw degree. Cooper is a famous country-rock singer and severe alcoholic Jackson Maine, who runs into Gaga's unknown singer Ally and becomes enamoured by her and her musical talent and, quickly thereafter. She joins him on his tour and soon finds herself attracting talent-hungry popindustry titans desperate for the next big thing while he, in her increasing shadow, is further consumed by alcohol and inner demons. The

early highs of romance and shared passions give way to the lows of fame and relationship strains, so viewers had best appreciate the former while it lasts- this is not the feel-good date movie that they may have thought it was. That is if they are not already familiar with the previous versions' common plot-points, in which case the spoilerfree should be better primed for the eventual emotional wallops. The film's second half admittedly lacks the spark of the first, but then, that is probably the point, as one is supposed to miss the central duo's better, earlier days. The plot is hardly original, this is, after all, the third remake -but in Cooper's hands, this is not a major concern. His chief focus is on the people in this familiar plot, for it is they who carry the film, and he grants the characters plenty of breathing room in moments of genuine humanity, helped by the fine performances he gets out of his cast. At its core, this is a human drama about people who happen to be musicians, not a strict music-film, which is crucial when it comes to winning over that portion of the audience who have no interest in modern music, either as a pastime or an industry. Admittedly, he populates the film with so many of these human moments that he tends to let things drag out, resulting in an occasionally sluggish, choppy film that could have benefitted from a tighter edit. There may be debates over which scenes could have been trimmed or outright cut, particularly as viewers are carried through the repetitive relationship lows. Some scenes ring truer than others, for the plot is not without conveniences and clichĂŠ- one moment of drunken public mortification perhaps goes too far for audience provocation. Thankfully, every moment that is somewhat lacking is typically followed by one that (pardon the pun) sings, and one can, overall, overlook the first-time director's rough-around-the-edges execution to appreciate the main event, which is the central character-drama. Cooper's own performance is a fearless one, mixing an appealing decency with darker qualities, such as

15

self-consumed arrogance. He also makes sure to leave room for his supporting cast to shine, namely Sam Elliot and Andrew Dice Clay. But now for the million-dollar question: how is Lady Gaga? Cooper is careful enough to tailor the material to suit her range, defining the Ally character as thick-skinned and reserved, her demeanour an apparent product of living under Clay's demanding father. There are times when her upper face veers close to stiffness, yet it is rarely long before she wins the audience back with a moment of emotional honesty dug up from within herself. One has to wonder if the baggage that an audience brings to a film should have any bearing on how a performance is perceived, for there are scenes that arguably work best for those who are less aware of Gaga's famous persona, and may thus see only her character. On the other hand, all-too-mindful viewers may appreciate the lineblurring between reality and role, not to mention give the still-developing actress the benefit of the doubt. It is hard not to feel the fourth wall breaking (deliberately?) when Ally starts to take on a more Gaga-esque persona in the second half, but then, one could argue that many female music-stars these days wind up following a coincidentally similar trajectory. It is best to treat these real-life allusions as part of the Cooper's, and indeed Gaga's pointed commentary on the modern, patriarchal, potentially shallow music industry, a commentary that stands out without quite mounting a soapbox. At the very least, the two leads deliver some crowd-pleasing songs, whether sung individually or as a duet. The songs organically stem from the scenes without coming off as music-videos jarringly crammed into the narrative and, yes, they are good in their own right, independently of the film. For that reason alone, A Star is Born is worth seeing with a crowd while still in cinemas, preferably ones with great surround sound. Although your ears may also be treated to the odd simultaneous sob...

Mini Mansions Reveal New Video ‘Midnight In Tokyo’

M

ini Mansions reveal the new video for "Midnight In Tokyo", taken from their Works Every Time EP, released on September 28. The music video was directed by Will Goodan. The Gorillaz-inspired track is at the heart of the band's new approach to songwriting. It captures the lifespan of a relationship, from falling in love to eventually breaking up, rooted in Michael's own experience. Whereas his life was previously very detached in his songwriting - hence their past material's more fantastical form - now it's very much at the forefront. The band say "Inspired by true romances and real heartbreaks, this song came to life after an existential trip to Tokyo. This track is no deep cut, but it's content sure does cut deep. This is the second instalment in the new Mini Mansions wave to come." Following on from their critically acclaimed 2015 album 'The Great Pretenders', which saw the band tour with the likes of Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys and Royal Blood, only now are the LA trio ready to unmask themselves more than ever before. Michael Shuman states on the new

material "This is probably the most personal and vulnerable we've ever been." The recording of the Works Every Time EP at Hollywood's Barefoot Recording Studios was co-produced by the band and Cian Riordan, who worked with them on their prior record, whilst Jon Theodore (Queens of the Stone Age) and Darren Weiss (Papa) tracked the drums. Dash Hutton (HAIM) will be playing live with the band. The band most recently played a one-off sold out show at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, and will be back in the UK next year. Mini Mansions are singer and guitarist Michael Shuman (bassist of Queens of The Stone Age), bassist Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets) and singer and keyboardist Tyler Parkford. 16

HOT HOT HOT BOY GEORGE AND CULTURE CLUB RELEASE NEW TRACK ‘GOD & LOVE’

B

oy George and Culture Club have released a new track 'God & Love', produced by Future Cut and is the opening track on the band's first album in twenty years 'LIFE', which will be available from October 26th. Of the track, Boy George says: "I think of both love and spirituality as things that must be done. It's no good saying you love someone if you never express it with actions and the same applies to God/spirituality. Don't be one of those people who go around thanking the universe and spouting spiritual gobble-dee-gook when you don't have a spiritual bone in your body. The song is a call to action. Show me your love and actually do something spiritual and inspiring!" Since their inception in 1981 Culture Club have sold more than 150 million records worldwide, recognised as a Grammy Award winning UK institution with a stream of classic hits including; 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me', 'Karma Chameleon', 'Church Of The Poison Mind', 'Victims', 'It's

A Miracle' and 'The War Song'. The group are fronted by singer/songwriter Boy George, universally loved as one of music's most iconic artists. Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss make up the remaining original line up. As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay front man, Culture Club set many records and established themselves as icons of British musical history and popular culture. The band reunited in 2014 and embarked on two worldwide sell-out tours over the following two years. 23

During the summer they played to over 500,000 people in the US and are now bringing the 'The Life Tour' to UK arenas in November. The Life Tour: starring Boy George & Culture Club will also feature 80's pop sweetheart Belinda Carlisle and new wave, synth pop artist Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey, the tour will visit 11 cities across the U.K kicking off Nov 9th in Nottingham through to Nov 23rd. 'We put together an amazing show that is going to be filled with hits and fabulous memories" says Boy George.
