Hailee Steinfeld

Back to Life

Music Review by Dave Simpson

t's been a big week for musician/movie star Hailee Steinfeld. Not only did the adept American artist serve as the host of one of the music calendar's most prestigious events, the MTV Europe Music Awards, which took place at the Bizkaia Arena in Spain on Sunday November 4th, she also unveiled a brand new single named "Back to Life". Written for her upcoming Transformers spin-off/prequel, Bumblebee, the enlivening electropop anthem represents the first time Steinfeld has contributed a song to the soundtrack of a movie in which she stars (other than the

numbers to which she contributed her vocal talent in the second and third Pitch Perfect movies, of course). It starts with a salvo of stirring synths which preface a pleasant beat that proceeds to reverberate warmly across the senses underneath the seductively serene yet strikingly vibrant refrain of the endearingly gentle first verse. The ambience remains relaxing as the whole thing transitions into a compellingly cool and canorous chorus before the spotlight shifts to a superbly heartfelt second stanza, during which the singing grows increasingly expressive while the music maintains a 04

magnificently mellow vibe in the background. It all eventually evolves into an engrossingly soft but spirited vocal breakdown just past the two and a half minute mark ahead of a fantastically affecting final showcase of entrancingly sonorous yet soothing instrumentation and singing. The outcome is an inescapably captivating and spectacularly smooth electropop piece that really couldn't rest any easier on the ears. Its consistently affable synthesis of enchantingly harmonious vocals and enthrallingly tranquil yet colourful music is guaranteed to appeal to a wide audience.

Deep Sky Objects Release New Single 'It's Your Ghost'

ith the release of singles 'Desire' and 'This City's at War' DEEP SKY OBJECTS showcased their proficiency at referencing the wide spectrum of rock music and combining this with hookworm melodies crafted something thoroughly modern and contagious. Pulling another rock rabbit out of their hat the newest single 'It's Your Ghost' is a seductive piece of progressive rock about lost connections. In reminiscing lead vocalist Kevin O'Brien intones “Talk to me like you

used to/ Talk to me like you want to'. Sometimes we look to the past to reconnect, when all we want to do is reconnect with you in the present.” Over the past year Kerry band DEEP SKY OBJECTS have become one of the most exciting rock bands to emerge in Ireland. Cleaving together grooves and melodies from classic and 90's rock combined with an enthralling live show the trio have become ones to watch. With 'It's Your Ghost' Deep Sky Objects wanted to

Brooklyn neo-psych rockers Hanford Reach share dystopian-themed single ‘Winston Smith’

introduce a more melody focused single finding a middle ground between The National and Royal Blood with inflections of The Cure. Let yourself be seduced and get ready for a band renowned for their big riffs and dirty bass lines that have kicked things up a gear and are getting ready to show you exactly what they are made of in 2019. The band members include brothers Kevin O'Brien (lead vocals/guitar), Thomas O'Brien (drums/backing vocals) and DD Foley (bass/backing vocals).

rooklyn-based neo-psych rockers Hanford Reach are sharing a new single, "Winston Smith." "The song is called 'Winston Smith,' based on the protagonist from 1984," the band's Chris Sherman shares. "The world really feels like an Orwellian dystopia, where it doesn't matter what the rational think; big brother is going to win out and shut us down. I hope that bleakness has been captured here and inspires some hope for change." Hanford Reach is a shoegaze hued psych-pop band formed by Sherman and Leah Cinnamon in late 2016 following the dissolution of Sky Picnic.

Warriors of the Dystotheque

I Know You'll Never Die

Music Review by Dave Simpson

onsisting of artists from Ireland, France and New York, electronic rock act Warriors of the Dystotheque originally arose as a result of its members’ mutual love of lo-fi music and electronic culture. Adopting a unique approach to composing material that sees its members collaborating digitally from each of their individual base countries, the resourceful ensemble has unleashed an array of well-received songs and compilations over the past few years.

Now they’ve decided to cap off 2018 by unveiling a brand new tune entitled “I Know You’ll Never Die”. Described as being an eerie but persistent call to arms and released via Reckless Records alongside several remixes from Sascha Dive, Le Galaxie and Richard March of Bentley Rhythm Ace, the enthrallingly atmospheric three and three quarter minute offering begins with a laid-back but bracing beat which gives rise to a rousing ambience ahead of the enticingly soft yet expressive serenade of the superbly slick first verse. 06

This paves the path to a simple but spirited chorus crammed with characterful music and hypnotic vocals, after which the torch is passed to another intoxicatingly smooth and expressive stanza which goes on to escort the proceedings to a fantastically heartfelt climax. The result is a distinctly suave and remarkably mellifluous lo-fi electronic composition, the seductively pleasant singing, delightfully delicate yet dynamic instrumentation and altogether accessible style of which is sure to allure a diverse listenership.

Irish rockers Skyfever play support to Chris Slade of AC/DC at Dublin's Button Factory

Gig Preview by Sean Coyle

he resilience of youth may have passed some of us but music is what lifts the spirits and propels us to feel pumped and energized! One way to warm up and overcome the dreary winter nights is to simply “Rock 'n' Roll” and Dublin’s very own Skyfever are returning to the Button Factory this Sunday, November 11, 2018, for what will sure to be a wealth of crisp sound and frenzied rock. 2018 was a great year for Skyfever with a slew of revered gigs and the release of the bands fantastic E.P. Rear View Mirror. The latest single to be pulled from the set ahead of this Sunday nights gig is Sunny Days. 'Sunny Days' is a gem, it is a song that relents to calming effect and has a distinctively

cool guitar rift which augments and builds the song wonderfully furthering the track to a solo that has an air of Santana about it (a cool feat). Sunny Days is catchy, lyrically and melodically profound. The song is a lamentation of a situation adding that juxtaposition of melancholy and hopefulness the cool synth part is also quite endearing. Skyfever will take to the stage about 7:00 pm this Sunday and they are representing Dublin for a night of precedence and hardcore performance as the headliner of the night is Chris Slade of AC/DC. So get ready for an explosion of rock. Doors open at 6.30 pm, tickets are €22.50 so it is well worth it, check it out! 09

THE MECHANIST reveal 'Timekeeper' playthrough video and B-Side single

rogressive metalcore quintet THE MECHANIST are pleased to reveal their B side single 'Between The Lines', along with a playthrough video of previously released A side single 'Timekeeper'. Being more of a soulful and less frantic track, 'Between The Lines' is a great contrast to the A side single; having darker meanings and lyrics that gives music fans a wider perspective of the bands writing abilities. Listen to 'Between The Lines' and watch the 'Timekeeper' playthrough video exclusively via THE MECHANIST's YouTube channel. "'Between The Lines' is about the guilt felt after not being there for somebody when they needed you the most. Then realising that they needed help when it's too late and they're gone; being lost in your own selfish life." - states Sam Butterfield, THE MECHANIST guitarist.

New Music Collaboration Honours WW1 Heroes and Supports War on Cancer

EP Featuring Ronnie Wood, Sinead O'Connor, Cillian Murphy, Brian Eno and Imelda May

he video for 'One More Yard' is released today. It features the spoken word of the acclaimed actor Cillian Murphy over haunting instrumentation by the musical pioneer Brian Eno. The track then segues into the song which features Sinead O'Connor on lead vocals, backed by Imelda May, with Ronnie Wood on guitars and Nick Mason on drums. The video shows the song's lyrics set against visuals of empty, dark and rain-soaked trenches, further highlighting the horrific conditions the soldiers of the First World War had to endure. Ronnie Wood said, "As someone who has had to deal with cancer, I am delighted to be part of this new awareness initiative, I hope everyone gets behind this great charity and there will be more to come." The lyrics shown in the video are inspired by letters written by

Lieutenant Michael Thomas Wall from the Royal Irish Regiment, to his mother in Dublin. Battling "one more yard" across no man's land was a phrase often repeated by many soldiers in their letters and diaries. The 'One More Yard' EP is a collaboration, created in tribute to the sacrifice of the young World War 1 soldiers and to raise awareness of today's war on cancer. The EP is part of the Evamore project which was founded by leading scientific entrepreneur, Professor Sir Chris Evans, as he was conducting research on creating a new cancer awareness charity. He was struck by the emotional struggle of young people confronted with cancer and how similar their written expressions and fighting spirit were to those of young soldiers thrust into the grim trenches of WW1. Sir Chris researched thousands of WW1 letters and 22

used words and phrases of the soldiers to write a collection of original songs. The project will see an album of songs produced and launched within the next six months and proceeds will go to a new cancer awareness trust which will provide expert clinical advice and guidance to cancer sufferers around the world - helping maximise their chances of controlling and overcoming their battles with the disease. Sir Chris explains, "It was incredibly moving to see how the words of soldiers 100 years ago were so similar to those of young people suffering from cancer today. We can only now honour the sacrifice of those a century ago but there is so much to be done to help those who are locked into the greatest struggle of their lives as they confront cancer. We are very privileged that some of the greatest names in rock music and wonderful actors have chosen to get involved in our project.

"When this group started 26 years ago and through all the highs and lows of our career, we've had to learn it wasn't about us as individuals but about what's best for the group," says Howie D. "That's what I love about this album," adds Kevin Richardson. "We were able to bring all of our influences and styles into one coherent piece of work. These songs are a great representation of who we are as individuals and who we are as a group. It's our DNA. We're 23

really proud of that." "The journey is ongoing with us and there is so much left to do," says Brian Littrell. "We're living the next chapter that hasn't been told yet, and that's exciting."
