Pioneering Spirit

the Sustaining Force for the

It

is one of the worst fears of most dairymen, fire.

But unlike some who have experienced sudden barn fires, the Donaldson family experienced a consuming fire from the onslaught of raging wildfires in British Columbia this summer. From July through mid-September, it raged across the region burning over 200,000 hectares (almost 495,000 acres), displacing 45,000 cattle and 80,000 people, according to Sarah Donaldson Yoder of Golden Gate Dairy in Abbotsford, British Columbia. According to Wikipedia, over three million acres were burned by the fire started by lightning on July 6, 2017, just west of 100 Mile House in Canada. The Donaldson family reside on lands that were pioneered, established and cleared in 1902 by Rob Donaldson’s grandparents. The original farm was a dairy, pigeon, daffodil and tulip farm until 1983 when Rob and Pat took over. The Donaldson family business has grown to now consist of three dairies, beef cattle operations that supply two grocery chains, chicken operations that include raising organic broilers as well as a hatchery and specialty birds, and a feed mill that supplies all of

6

Bradner Farms, plus 50 other organic poultry and dairy operations in British Columbia. Rob Sr. and Pat operate Bradner Farms, a 550 cow dairy with 200 head of Brown Swiss and 350 Holsteins as well as organic broilers. Rob and Pat’s daughter Sarah Yoder, and her husband Bud and family, milk across the street on the home farm under the Golden Gate Farms name, milking 100 head of 40 Brown Swiss and 60 Holsteins as well as raise specialty birds and organic broilers. Sister Pamela Krause, and her husband, Jordan and family, farm in Cache Creek, approximately three hours away, near Ashcroft, British Columbia. Along with more birds, they custom raise 6,000 beef, grow 100 acres of potatoes to supply the British Columbia fresh market, grow 1,200 acres of feed, and have 12,000 acres of range land where they have a 180 head cow/calf operation. About 10 minutes away from them, Rob and Pat’s son, Robert Jr. began milking a few years ago at Bradner R Farms in Ashcroft. It was this farm that was ravaged by fire leaving behind only the feedlot. Sarah has agreed to take us on the journey through the day of the fire and immediately after.

Brown Swiss Bulletin

“The wildfire started at the railroad tracks over the hill from Bradner R Farms. Within half an hour, the mountain was on fire and headed in a direct line with the barn. Around 30 people; including family, the vet, neighbors and strangers helped evacuate the milking cowsfrom the barn to the lower pasture field and calves on milk where loaded on a stock trailer and transported down to Pat and Rob's farm in Abbotsford (three hours away). The feedlot at the time was full of 2000 head of beef and dairy animals, anywhere from mature beef cows, four-month-old calves, bred heifers to dry cows, etc. The gates were opened and they joined the rest of the milking cows in the lower field. The fire was so aggressive and the winds were so strong the firefighters could not fight it. They came and told everyone to leave. The entire town was evacuated. Many employees and friends stayed behind to help Robert with the cattle while their families packed and left their homes unsure of what they would return to. Four kilometers of hydro lines that supplied power were destroyed by the fire leaving no power, water etc., in its wake. It was 104 F that day, plus the heat from the fire made for extremely dangerous and life threatening conditions for the cattle and people. Robert was able to contact someone to bring water in with a water truck, a volunteer from the city that had stayed back to help. The water truck was finally able to get in later that night, filling up pivot ruts for the cattle to drink out of.

Donaldsons

By Cheri Oechsle & Sarah Yoder

Trying to get in and to get the cattle out was difficult. The town was under lockdown and vehicles were not able to travel through town to get to Robert’s farm because of everything from debris to gas stations blowing up. This made any cattle hauling very difficult as all the cattle trucks and trailers needed to come through that way to get to the farm. There was so much debris, power lines, wires, etc., that were over the driveway and needed to get moved in order for the trucks to get in to even load cattle. The first trailers were loaded at 2 a.m. The plan was to bring all the milking cows and calves on milk down to Pat and Rob’s milking facility where they had room. All of the heifers and beef cows were moved to the Black Canyon Ranch 10 km (a little over 6 miles) away which was not affected by the fires. Pat, myself (Sarah) and Pamela were waiting on the other end to unload the cattle and start the health assessment and milking process after they hadn't been milked for up to 40 hours. I really expected the worst as the cattle came off the liner. They all went right to the bunk CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

and seemed very calm. They must have done a good job getting enough water to them up there. Many people that helped load liners did say they couldn't believe how calm the Swiss breed was to sort, load, and generally deal with.

There were 200 milking cows trucked throughout that night and next day. There were a few cows that went back into the burning barn to get water that didn't come back out. The total animal loss was 60 cows from effects of the fire. Most that had to be euthanized resulted from burnt feet or bad burns. The entire years’ worth of feed, the hayshed and ag-bags with grain corn were also lost along with the miles of fencing, and the milking and dairy barn. Robert and several people that helped had to be put on oxygen in the hospital from smoke inhalation after the fire. Today, all the milking cows are doing very well. The vet couldn't believe how there were so very few that had any smoke inhalation. Most all of the ones that were burnt are gone now (either sold or euthanized). Production stayed the same. We did have many heifers that aborted a few weeks later due to the stress, which the vet said was normal. So that was another big loss. Robert and his girlfriend Torrie plan to get the site ready for building this spring. They finally got everything cleaned up in November. But it looks to be a two-year rebuilding process. In the meantime, they are raising all the replacement dairy heifers for Bradner R and Bradner Farms at their feedlot as well as raising 3,500 acres of feed.” 2018 is starting off with several bright spots. In November, Rob Sr. was declared cancer free after aggressive chemo and surgery. As Robert and Torrie lay plans to rebuild at Bradner R, they will also welcome a little one into the family any day, as will Bud and Sarah this spring. The farms have several All-American nominees and their dairy, beef and various other business operations continue to expand and grow. The Donaldson family continues to display that pioneering spirit established generations before when the land was cleared and the farm first established. They will continue to do what farmers and pioneers do best – provide food and products for all of those around them!

Editor's note: Thank you to Sarah and Robert for sharing their story and congratultions to Robert and Torrie who welcomed Jemma Kate to the family on January 24.

Brown Swiss Historical Society Seeks Master Breeder Award Nominations The Brown Swiss Historical Society (BSHS) is seeking nominations for the 2017 Master Breeder Award program. The program adopted in 2009, annually recognizes people important to the continuing progress of the Brown Swiss breed. The awards recognize an active breeder and a historical breeder that successfully developed a breeding program that accentuated cow families, especially those that contributed significantly to the advancement of the breed. The master breeder program has previously recognized great breeders. In the active breeder category, the recipients have been Wayne E. Sliker, Milan (Bob) & Steve Blessing, Darrel Worden, Roger Nierman, Larry Kruse, Rich Hill, Charlie Voelker and Ron & Renee Michalovich. In the historical category, the winners were Vernon C. Hull, Norman E. Magnussen, Jacob & Howard Voegeli, Bill & Velva Notter, Leon W. Button, Orbec Sherry, Pete Vanderham and Rex Mort. The recognition ceremony will be held at the National Convention. George Joseph Hendel

George Joseph Hendel passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017. George was born May 19, 1928, at the Hendel Farm, Caledonia, Minnesota, the oldest child of George J. and Hilda (Thill) Hendel. George attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse located directly across the road from his farm. He graduated from Loretto High School in 1945. Following high school, George was a life long farmer. In 1958, he married Mary Jane Huesmann and together they raised four children. With the exception of his Army service during the Korean War, George lived his entire life on the family farm with Brown Swiss cattle in the barn and his much beloved cats at the back door. George was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold; sister, Grace; and daughter, Greta Ingvalson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane; children, Katy (Dewayne) Ullsperger, Minnetonka, Minn., Karl Hendel and Matt (Pam) Hendel of Caledonia; and son-in-law, Don (Sherry) Ingvalson of Caledonia; grandchildren, Eric (Julia), Jessie (Charlie), Devin, Hannah, Lauren, Sydney and Callan. Services were held Tuesday, January 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Houston County Historical Society, Caledonia FFA, or the Caledonia Library.

In Memoriam

as Outstanding Young Farmers, Wisconsin Master Agriculturists, and Century Farmers. She was recognized as Outstanding Farm Woman of the Year for Shawano Country, Honorary FFA Alumni member and Outstanding Dairy Leader. Mardelle was a member of the Shawano County Holstein Association, a 4-H Dairy Leader for 28 years, a member of the Bonduel FFA Alumni, and the Bonduel Booster Club. Mardelle was also a driving force behind the creation of the Shawano County Rural Health Initiative, providing resources to the farming community. Mardelle is survived by her sons, Steven (Phil) of Madison, Daniel (Carrie) of Bondu-

el, Richard of Wauwatosa, and Randall (Sara) of De Pere; grandchildren Alex, KatieAnn, Rose, Isaac and Ian. She is further survived by her sister Caryle (Domingo) Adams of Winnie, TX along with many nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Allen, her parents Fred and Irene, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law Harold H. and Katherine (Seidler) Sievert, as well as uncles Clifford, Cyril and Laverne McKeefry. A Funeral Mass for Mardelle was held on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018.

Mardelle Sievert

After an extraordinary life of 76 years, Mardelle Phyllis (Sobiesczcyk) Sievert, of Pulaski, Wisconsin, formerly of Bonduel, passed away as she slept on Friday, January 5, 2018. Mardelle was born on June 5, 1941 in Green Bay. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Irene (McKeefry) Sobiesczyk. Mardelle attended Assumption B.V.M. School followed by Pulaski High School, graduating in 1959. On September 28, 1963, Mardelle was united in marriage to Allen Roy Sievert in Pulaski. Mardelle earned an Associate's Degree at NWTC and worked at Wisconsin Public Service before farming with Allen in the towns of Hartland and Angelica in Shawano County until 2016. Mardelle was a farmer in the truest sense of the word - planting the seeds of hope. She was a mother to those who knew it and countless others who didn't, including her sons and to Carrie, Sara, Diane, Dan, and all those unofficially adopted as her own. Whether it was the kids in 4-H and FFA, the farmers helped by the Rural Health Initiative, the guys who helped pile hay on the farm, the kindergartners she read to, the choir girls whose dresses she sewed, or just the babies she held in public to give someone help, Mardelle only knew how to give her love and support. Mardelle and her husband were recognized February 2018
