The Office

CONNECTION Executive Secretary: David Wallace l 608.365.4474 ext. 24, dwallace@brownswissusa.com

September is already here and in just weeks the World Dairy Expo will be here and all will be anticipating another great Brown Swiss show. It is a great week for breeders to see some of the best that breeders from around North America have to offer to the dairy industry. Not only for visitors to see the best at Expo but it also allows for many farm visits within a few hours’ drive for many Brown Swiss farms who may not exhibit at WDE. It is always great to visit and enjoy talking about the BIG BROWN COW. World Dairy Expo is probably the largest gathering of Brown Swiss breeders and enthusiasts every year here in North America. Attend and enjoy your time and support your breed. I will be leaving the Brown Swiss Association at the end of the year. The Board of Directors voted at the reconvene of the board meeting to not rehire me for 2018 and pursue another direction. It has been an honor to work for you, the Brown Swiss breeders, during the last seven and half years. I would like to thank the many who have always supported me through the difficult times and the good. I have had great people in the office to work with over the years and Brown Swiss would not be where we are today without the dedication of the office staff and I thank all of them, past and present. I thank the Presidents I have served since coming here at the beginning of 2010. I would like to thank the Board of Directors that have had the Breed in their best interest over these years. As my time serving you as your Executive Secretary comes to an end, I only want what is best for Brown Swiss as a breed and association. You must stay focused on moving forward with a cow that produces lots of quality milk, and exhibits tremendous functional type while remaining profitable. As a membership organization, remember, regardless of the size of a herd, all need to be treated equally, with consideration and fairness.

Keep the “Big Brown Cow in the Spotlight!”

Thank you, David

New Generation Genetics ~ providing for the next generation

Does Genomics work? Eight years of experience from New Generation Genetics. Genomics was first introduced to the Brown Swiss breed with August proofs in 2009, and New Generation Genetics was involved from the beginning. Dan Gilbert, President of the company, was an early leader in bringing about the international cooperation necessary for genomic reliabilities to be valuable as a mating tool. Eight years later, he believes in genomics more than ever. Eachibon Bliss C Beulah

“Genomics has helped us become a better company and helped herds become better as well,” Jake Hushon, U.S. Sales Manager for New Generation Genetics, adds. “We’re not sampling bulls that were destined to disappoint based on their genetic transmitting ability. Previously, a bull might get used in dozens of herds before we knew how he would transmit. Now, that bull gets left at the farm.”

“From the onset of the ‘genomic revolution’ the question I get more often than not is: Does it work?” Gilbert says. “Given that breeders are investing their herd’s genetic future, it is a fair question. However, defining ‘works’ is important. If you define works as ranking every animal for every trait accurately, the answer would be no. However, if you define, as we do, ‘works’ as accurately identifying a group of animals who are genetically superior to the rest of the population, we can answer with a resounding YES!”

Brown Swiss Bulletin

Does it work (by the numbers)? Answering the question of did genomics work can be done from a variety of angles. Since genomics was first introduced, 39 New Generation Genetics young bulls have accumulated enough daughter production data where a decision could be made to graduate them to the proven line-up or cull them. Of those, 22 have graduated to the proven book for at least one proof run, including the latest graduates DOUBLE DELUX and DALHART. The table below compares these bulls to the 39 bulls selected prior to genomics. From that group, only 11 graduated.

Breeders cautiously approached genomics at first, but have used younger bulls over time. New Generation Genetics estimates that most breeders used 70-percent proven bulls in their mating program prior to genomics being introduced. Today, it’s 50:50 with many herds leaning slightly towards more young sires. Gilbert points out that New Generation Genetics was equally cautious. “Early on, many A.I. companies decided to use unproven Holstein bulls as the sire of sons,” Gilbert explains. “Our approach was more cautious while we gained confidence in the technology and the market’s acceptance of it. We didn’t utilize this strategy until April of 2013 when CARTER was used for a mating on Hilltop Acres V Dolly ET. The result was DAVENPORT who graduated in August 2017. As the market has become more comfortable with genomics, we have too.” The goal with genomics is to improve the consistency of genetics in our program and what people can expect from them, Hushon explains. “When you go into a herd, every herd has really good cows, average cows and then ones they are not satisfied with. A real benefit of genomics that we’re seeing is fewer in that third group and the gap from the top of a herd to the bottom shrinking.” Does it work (expanding the gene pool)? Answering the question of does genomics expand the breed’s gene pool is an important part of how New Generation Genetics evaluates genetic selections. Brown Swiss breeders consistently have asked for more diversity in the cow families from which bulls and bull mothers are chosen. When genomics became available on the female side, New Generation had a key herd in mind to test the technology on. “The first cows we tested were from Switzer Tals, a high-production herd in Prairie du Sac, Wis.,” Gilbert recalls. “On the old system their best cows wouldn’t deviate high enough from herdmates to get onto the radar screen as a bull mother. We tested two cows and they were superior within the breed for milk. Both became bull mothers.” Genomics has helped the A.I. industry discover new herds for sire selection including Blue Mountain Genetics (Minn.), Jo-Lane Farm (Iowa), Hendel Farms (Minn.), La Rainbow Farms (Ohio), Pit Crew Genetics (Minn.) and Shiloh Dairy (Wis.). CADENCE is a bull from one of these new herds, Shiloh Dairy. He spent a year as the #1 genomic bull (G-PPR) and now has spent a year as the #1 PPR bull. Of the top 100 milk cows, 34 are sired by CADENCE. He also is the sire of seven of the top 25 G-PPR bulls and sire of the dam of the numbers #1, #3 and #5. Thirty of the top 200 heifers are sired by CADENCE and 20 more are out of CADENCE dams. The downside is when a new cow family is identified, multiple bulls are quickly selected from it by the different A.I. companies. Hushon points out that New Generation Genetics has actively worked to avoid inbreeding and look for new families to bring to the market. “When we first started using genomic bulls, we chased the numbers to have the top bull. After a few years, you realize we are narrowing our line-up too much,” he explained. “Now, our goal is to find the future outcross bull. Four of the top five G-PPR bulls have a European sire in their three-generation stack which is one way we can expand the breed.”

Genomics also has been a tool for New Generation Genetics to continue selecting the best from their top seedstock herds. “The Hilltop Acres D family has continued to reward us through genomics,” Hushon added. “DAREDEVIL is the #2 type bull (PTAT). His dam is the fifth generation as a bull mother on the maternal side.” Another way New Generation Genetics has partnered with breeders to expand the breed’s gene pool is through its Genomic Discovery program. Every six months, the company invites breeders to test their high-ranking heifers. More than 1,400 have gone through the program to-date. This allows the company to be more accurate in selecting young females as bull mothers. “We routinely see full siblings very consistently matching their genomic expectations for important traits such as milk, components and udder depth,” Gilbert explained. It is particularly important that sons of the elite females are returning sons at a much higher rate than untested females or those with lesser initial genomics. This allows us to be far more selective for bulls entering our program.” Does it work (bridging the commercial vs. show ring divide)? New Generation Genetics introduced its Champions Collection in response to customer feedback. Hushon, who came up with the idea, explains that the goal wasn’t to just find good bulls that appealed to the showring enthusiasts who asked for them, but it was more than that. “The goal was to use genomics to identify show-type pedigrees with positive production. We had to make sure we weren’t sampling minus milk bulls just to get the type. They needed to be positive contributors to the future of the breed,” he said. “RICHARD was the first. He was genomic tested and came back double his parent average for production which fit our criteria.” The program has allowed commercial production breeders to tap into high-type bulls while offering high-genomic bulls that showring enthusiasts could appreciate. “I think Champions Collection has helped bridge the show versus milk people debate. All breeders can use some of the same bulls now,” Hushon said. “CARTER is the #1 proven type bull and #2 for milk. One of the neat parts of genomics has been to bridge this gap.” 2017 marks the 23rd year for New Generation Genetics as an organization, and the company continues to grow. In June, Anna Troester joined the organization as the U.S. Sales & Progeny Support Specialist with responsibility for the sale of Brown Swiss genetics throughout the Midwest and Western states. “We are continually looking for new bull mothers and cow families. It’s what our breeders expect,” Hushon said. “Genomics has had the biggest impact on our organization in the past five years. Our next eight bulls to sample are all out of first-time bull mothers. Does genomics work? I think the results answer the question.”

Cadence: True To His Numbers By: Katie Henson

W

hen genomics first hit the dairy industry, many people had reservations. Shiloh Brookings Cadence ET *TM was one of those bulls that had the big numbers from his genomic proof. Fast forward to 2017 and Cadence has exceeded every expectation and helped the Brown Swiss breed believe in high genomic bulls proving themselves in the New Generation Genetics lineup.

“Cadence was the most mellow young bull. He loved his daily chin rubs and he easily became one of our favorites,” mentions Cathy Speirs. The farm favorite has transitioned himself into New Generation’s highest seller worldwide. Facts by numbers In the current G-PPR list of the Top 200 heif-

er, 30 of those are sired by Cadence and 20 more are out of a Cadence dam. On the Top 100 PPR Cows, Cadence has sired 34 of them! With the August 2017 proof run, Cadence has sired 7 of the Top 25 G-PPR bulls and the sire of the dam of #1, #3 and #5. Cadence is also siring ones that classify well too. He has 94 classified daughters and 47% of those are scored Very Good and 57% are Very Good or Excellent in their mammary score. “Cadence’s daughters are incredibly consistent. The udders are his best feature; long fore udders, youthful and great seam and teat placement,” Hushon said. Cadence has only been proven over a year but his oldest daughters are just now three years old and in their second lactations. Hushon said “we are just beginning to write his complete story and his influence on the Brown Swiss breed.”

Twinkle-Hill Cadence Oakley

Cadence, after the August 2017 proof run, is still the #1 G-PPR bull at +223PPR. He was bred by Shiloh Dairy, the Speirs Family of Greenleaf, WI. They were in an embryo partnership with Sunshine Genetics, WI, and were splitting the heifers. Cadence’s dam, SunMade SD Wonder Buffy ET ‘VG88,’ one of those heifers, is a Wonderment daughter of Front Line Pronto Bounty ET ‘EX90.’ “When we (NGG) mated for Cadence, his sire Brookings had just proven out beyond our wildest dreams and we wanted to use him a lot on matings. Buffy had everything we were looking for, as Wonderment was our best seller in the USA and she was from the B-Hive of Top Acres,” says Jake Hushon. “Buffy had genomics which predicted her to be of very high milk and high type so we wanted to add components and health traits by using Brookings. Cadence received the best of both and anyone seeing his daughters today knows that the match was a perfect one!”

Carter: The Overall Type & Production Bull By: Katie Henson

Bridging the gap between type and production bulls can sometimes be a daunting task; but not for Carter. Voelkers TD Carter *TM is a fit for both type and show ring breeders and those who breed for milk and components.

Tandara Carter Sarajevo 107

Carter, bred by Voelkers Swiss Farm in Perryville, MO, is a true genomic success story. His granddam, Voelkers Miguel Candid ‘4E94’ won her class at World Dairy Expo in 2009 and is sired by a herd bull. In the past, some of those bulls would have been over looked, but when genomics hit the industry in 2009, NGG decided to sample this Webster Ridge TD son from a Wonderment dam

that was high on the heifer list. Today, Candid is 14 years old and still in the herd. She has made over 222,000 pounds of milk lifetime. In the beginning, he was +1.2 for Type with a high udder composite score, over +1000 on milk and high G-PPR. After the latest proof run, Carter is +1.5 for Type, which is higher than any other genomic bull on the Brown Swiss Association’s lists. He even bests the proven bulls! He has continually been adding daughters to his proof and that shows with his increased type and production numbers. Carter was sampled with other high profile, pedigreed young sires in the breed but the others were generally used on higher scored cattle. But once his daughters started to freshen, they were not to be missed. “They look the same at every farm and show tremendous consistency, says Jake Hushon. “The daughters outshine all those bulls Carter was sampled with.” “Carter’s daughters excel in stature, great feet and legs, youthful udders and great attachments,” said Hushon. Currently, Charlie Voelker has 31 milking Carter daughters up to their third lactation. He has 17 heifers and several cows bred to him. Charlie still has plenty of Carter in the tank that he plans on

using. “They’re long with the welded on udders,” he said. Of Carter’s 236 classified daughters, only in their third lacations, their average score is 84.5. His sons are starting to shine bright after the latest genetic release. Hilltop Acres CT Davenport ET graduated to the proven lineup in August and is the #1 DPR bull and is a +1.1 for type. Carter is now just now getting some of his most exciting daughters calving in and hitting the show ring. His story will keep getting better, all while setting records, too!

An Adventure all wrapped up in one week! By Cheri Oechsle oegeli Brown Swiss is home to the Bryan and Jimmy Voegeli family along with a herd of Brown Swiss cows that has received world-wide recognition through multiple generations. Voegeli Brown Swiss is home to “Madora,” a 15th-generation Excellent cow, and multiple All-American and production award winners. The farm was homesteaded in 1854 in Monticello, Wisconsin, by Swiss predecessors. In 1895, Jacob Voegeli, Bryan’s great-grandfather, purchased the first registered Brown Swiss and they have had registered Brown Swiss ever since. Currently, the sixth generation is involved in operations at the farm. Bryan’s mother Alice, brother Jimmy, Bryan’s two children, Brienna and Christopher – along with a great work force – operate the farm. The farm now has a 220 milking cow herd and they own 1,000 acres and rent neighboring land for a total of 1,300 acres of crops. The family has been showing at the World Dairy Expo since the beginning. This year marks the 51st year of exhibiting. Bryan’s father Howard was instrumental in working with the group that included Norm Magnussen, Gene Nelson and Allen Hetts to bring the show to Madison from Waterloo those first years. They even donated cattle for sales to come up with the seed money. “It was such a great group of people that worked so hard to get it started,” said Bryan, “and so many believed it should be there. So we were in it from the very beginning. I was lucky enough to attend all of them. Not sure if I showed that first year but I certainly took off school to help!” Bryan continued, “There is no greater venue than the World Dairy Expo to highlight genetics. People from 100 different countries, most states in the US and Canada are there. It is the meeting place of the dairy industry and “The Show” that most everyone would like to be at just to interact with breeders, industry people, trade show or sales and looking at genetics. It’s all right there.” When preparing for the show the Voegelis designate show pens for their heifers which are then fed grass-based hay and their nutritionist makes up a balanced show feed for them. They have pasture for walking and exercise. They are isolated as a show group. Bryan says

the challenge comes with the cows. “We are a free stall-based herd and feed a single-herd TMR, so the cows are more limited to getting them prepared like the show ring dictates. We have no way to have them railed down with them in the herd. We don’t have a show barn like some so it makes it more challenging for us to accomplish that with our operation. Ultimately production is one of most important things for me and that’s our focus so the opportunity with the cows is a bit more challenging. As we start working with them, though, we do tie them in another area to feed more hay during the day, but it’s not like if we had a show barn.” “The biggest challenge we face,” Bryan said, “is like many, finding enough labor. Plus we have the added challenge of hosting tours with our proximity to Madison. We host around 10 different tour groups at the farm during the week. Tuesday of Expo week I host a party at the farm. We cook out and try to welcome as many foreign guests as we can, many have become returning friends. To see so many people that we’ve known for so many years…that’s all part of it. I’m on the Expo board so that creates challenges too. It is a challenge getting moved in, getting cattle adjusted, settled in and fed. Time juggling is a challenge, but that’s what makes Expo, Expo. Everyone is going 150% because that’s what Expo is. Entertaining people and keeping the crews going in all areas.” Expo is a great place to learn as well, according to Bryan. His advice for youngsters is to try and tie in or work with one of the many show crews. “What we try to do is open up and bring people in that come along to show. I think a young person, if they can hook up with a good show string for the week, there is so much to learn and it is so intense and they don’t realize how intense it is until they get there. Everything you do is magnified. They can learn so much about feeding, care, preparing, etc. and if they can go with someone who is willing to teach, that’s the best. They might as well work with the best of the best because all of them are here. A young person will learn more in one week working with a good fitting crew than they ever read about or get anywhere else. The young kids that work with some of these great outfits – they will lead crews in the next five years.” “If you are going to put a financial number or value on it [showing at Expo] you will find out it’s a long term investment because

to make one or two loops around that ring, in what you have in the cow, is high. But the exposure you get, if you enjoy the experience and meeting people, the repayment is returned in so many different ways. Sometimes you do well, sometimes it’s the exposure and the value is recouped later, sometimes it’s just the experience of the great adventure. Your payback is not always immediate – it’s expensive but everyone is rewarded and all sum it up differently. For some it is the experience – some have to sell so many dollars’ worth of cattle or genetics – some have to win. Everyone is different. For me it is more about the exposure. We try to merchandise, we like to meet people and we like to advertise. We keep doing it because we believe it has terrific value to it and it’s our heritage,” Bryan said. “My favorite part of Expo is broad based. It’s the people there – the old friends, the new friends, the culture, the history, the drama of the show, it’s the meeting of the people. There are so many facets that make Expo so interesting. To watch the show is fascinating, to meet new people, see the trade show, learn new things - it’s an adventure all wrapped up in one week. And sometimes it is an overwhelming adventure,” he laughed.
