ational shows are coming to an end for 2017 and it has been a great time to promote the best of the breed. As one watched, you could not help but notice the many youth participating in shows from local to national events. It is a wonderful site to see so many young people involved and the family atmosphere that exists. One has to know the future of the Brown Swiss breed is looking bright when this much excitement is everywhere with the youth program within your association. he International Brown Swiss Show was a two-day affair for judges Keith Topp of Ohio and Dean Dohle of Missouri. On Thursday, October 4, 187 heifers paraded through the ring. At the end of the evening, it was the returning Reserve Junior Champion of the 2016 show, Top Acres Braiden Wiza ET, that took home the top heifer honor of the show. The 2016 All-American Fall Calf, owned by Lindsey Rucks of Okeechobee, Florida, has already captured Junior Champion honors at the Eastern National, New York and Maryland State Fairs. The winning Fall Yearling is a Braiden out of the ‘3E95’ Wizard that would compete for top honors the following day. (For more on this family see page 14). Fairdale Hill Braiden Shey ET, the winning Fall Calf, took the Reserve Junior Champion banner back to the barn for owners Leslie and Linda Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. Another Braiden daughter, she is out 6

of the ‘VG89’ All-American Dublin Hills Shaeley ET whose dam is the All-American ‘4E93’ Sasha. The following day, Topp and Dohle considered 88 young cows before selecting the pair of Senior Three-Year-Olds for Intermediate Champions of the show. Touted by Judge Topp as “quite the pair,” Cutting Edge Thunder Faye edged out Peach Kist Total Tango ET for first place and Intermediate Champion based on her height and width of rear udder. Faye, who was Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Eastern National, is owned by Ken Main and Peter Vail of Copake, New York. The All-American Senior Two-Year-Old in 2016, she is an ‘EX91’ Cutting Edge Thunder daughter out of an Excellent All-American Wonderment dam. Peach Kist Total Tango ET, owned by Lindsey Rucks, is a 91-point Total daughter backed by two Excellent dams. Last year’s Reserve All-American Senior Two-YearOld, she was the Intermediate and Grand Brown Swiss Bulletin

Champion of the Eastern National earlier in the show season. For Senior Champion selection, after judging 42 mature cows and following all the pomp and circumstance of the entrance and introduction of the contenders for champion, three cows from Ohio were left standing in the center of the ring. The first-place Five-Year-Old was R N R Lebron Emily, bred and owned by the Michalovich family of Lakeville, Ohio. An Excellent daughter of Lebron, she was the Reserve All-American Four-Year-Old in 2016. She made over 21,000M as a three-year-old. She is backed by two Very Good dams. The Aged Cow was Kar-Linn Wondrmnt Reese ET, a 91-point Wonderment daughter bred and owned by Jeff Brown and KarLinn Swiss of Jackson Center, Ohio. She was the All-American Four-Year-Old in 2015 and Grand Champion of the Eastern National that same year. She has production records to 26,080M 1,257F 908P. Her

dam is also a 91-point All-American winner sired by Supreme. The granddam is an Excellent Banker. The third cow was the firstplace Component Merit Cow, Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET, scored ‘2E95,’ and has records to 34,914M 1,840F 1,163P. Owned by Wayne Sliker of St. Paris, Ohio, she was the 2013 All-American Senior Three-YearOld, 2015 Res. All-American Five-Year-Old, Res. All-American Aged Cow in 2016 and a member of the All-American Produce of Dam in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. She is a granddaughter of Top Acres EJ Whizzbang ‘5E93.’ Wizard is sired by Supreme and out of the All-American nominee, ‘2E93’ Andre Whisper. After deliberating over the three, Judge Topp congratulated Wizard’s leadsman, Wayne Sliker, as his choice for Senior Champion. The Five-Year-Old, led by Kevin Michalovich, was tapped for Reserve Senior Champion honors. For Grand and Reserve Champion, Judge Topp made his selections shaking hands

with Wayne Sliker as his indication of his choice for Grand Champion for the day and following suit with his Intermediate Champion as Reserve and the Reserve Senior Champion for Honorable Mention. He said, “This old cow puts it all together for me today. Then following with the ThreeYear-Old, taking nothing away from the Five-Year-Old, but she just blew us away today in class and has the same frame as the older cow. This is how we saw them today.” The Total Performance Cow and NASCO Type and Performance Award went to Jonlee Secret Langwathby owned by the Freemans of Bremen, Indiana. Premier Exhibitor and Breeders of the show, including the heifer show as well, were Ken Main and Peter Vail of Elite Dairy, Copake, New York. Following are the top six in each class. The “World of Whizzbang By Cheri Oechsle

T

here are multiple cows in the breed that have made an impact throughout the years. Names like Snickerdoodle, Toni, Raisin, Gretal, Nora, Snowstorm and many, many more foundation cows come to mind. Today, though, the family that is synonymous with winners is “The World of Whizzbang.” This year’s winners of both the cow and heifer shows at the International Brown Swiss Show are not only Whizzbang descendants, but a dam and daughter duo, a unique combination. Grand Champion of the International Brown Swiss show was Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET. Her daughter, Top Acres Braiden Wiza ET, owned by Lindsey Rucks of Okeechobee, Florida, was named Junior Champion of the show. Additionally, the Grand Champion of the Junior Show is a great-granddaughter of Whizzbang, Top Acres Garbro Winner ET, owned by Jonathon Hubbard of Thurmont, Maryland. A maternal sister to Winner, Top Acres Garbro S Wish ET topped the Four-Year-Old cow class for Jennifer and Larry Meyer. There were 10 head from “The World of Whizzbang” that placed in the top five in their respective classes at this year’s show in Madison, Wisconsin. But that’s not the only show ring that “The World of Whizzbang” has captured the top ribbons. Five offspring stood in the top five at Harrisburg, including the above mentioned Top Acres Braiden Wiza ET, tapped for Junior Champion of the Eastern National. She was also Junior Champion at New York and Maryland for Rucks. Three head from the family, including the Reserve Junior Champion, Cutting Edge B Wisteria, owned by Ken Main and Peter Vail of Copake, New York, were shown at the Northeast National. Top Acres HP B Wise ET, owned by Golden Gate Swiss in Canada, was the Reserve Junior Champion of the Northwest National Show and Brothers Three TV Wisco ETV, owned by Goldfawn Farms of Texas was the Intermediate Champion at the Southwest National Show.

In addition, Danielle Pacheco in California had Junior Champion at the California State Fair with Top Acres J Wickee ET and a daughter of the Grand Champion of the International Show, Top Acres HP Peppy Winz ETV, was Grand for owner Matthew Pacheco. The family doesn’t just dominate in the show ring. A deep line of production runs through the maternal pedigrees as well. Top Acres EJ Whizzbang is out of an Excellent All-American Johann Johnny D dam with over 118,000M lifetime. Whizzbang herself is ‘5E93’ with over 168,000M lifetime. A multiple All-American winner, she was also named the National Total Performance Winner in 1996. With an outstanding number of Excellent and Very Good daughters, her legacy continues to breed true into the next generation. Last year’s NASCO Type & Production Award went to Top Acres Supreme Wisp, a ‘3E95’ daughter with records over 31,000M. This year’s International

Show Grand Champion is a granddaughter of Whizzbang out of a‘2E93’ Andre daughter, Top Acres Andre Whisper ET, who has records to 32,941M 1,921F 1,174P in 365D. Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET, the one to take the owner and breeder of the Whizzbangs to the top winner’s circle, is scored ‘2E95’ and she produced over 34,000M. She was also named the Total Performance Winner at last year’s show in Madison. In addition, she was named the 2013 All-American Senior Three-Year-Old, 2015 Res. All-American Five-Year-Old, Res. All-American Aged Cow in 2016 and a member of the All-American Produce of Dam in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This multiple AllAmerican winner is owned, and was bred by, Wayne Sliker of St. Paris, Ohio. Her daughter, now owned by Rucks, and the many other offspring throughout the country and world, look to continue the legacy of “The World of Whizzbang” far into the future for the Brown Swiss breed.

What are your other activities? I am a volunteer fire fighter and first aid squad member. I just completed my Fire Fighter 1 training and am currently enrolled in an EMT class. I always make sure that there are dairy products available with our meals or as snacks. When I do an overnight shift, it’s always chocolate milk for breakfast! 5. How would you explain Swiss to someone? They are the best breed ever! They are big and produce a lot of milk filled with butterfat to make better cheese. I won’t lie, they can be very stubborn, but they can also be very docile and gentle.

6. What is the wackiest name you have used? So far - Lovebug 7. One word to describe them? Loving - Bold 8. What contests have you competed in? I show at county and state fairs. I have also shown at the All American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Spring Dairy Expo in Columbus, Ohio. I have also participated in the National Brown Swiss photo contest.

Youth Fun Auction By Bridgette Smith, HOAE Junior Coordinator

Usually in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in October, the best competitions can be seen at the Oklahoma State campus. However, when the Heart of America Southwest National Brown Swiss Show is in town it the place to be seen on Thursday night at the fun auction. A packed room of exhibitors, friends and Brown Swiss enthusiasts bid on numerous items, from stained glass Brown Swiss cows handcrafted by the one and only Tena Cobb to a 30-year Brown Swiss Bulletin collection from the Gerald Laub estate. The fun auction profited over $6,000 to help support the show. The junior exhibitors did not miss out on the fun. A silent auction allowed the juniors to do their own bidding. The junior silent auction brought in another $150. It was a rousing night of bidding and fun for all.
