Immunization in Mission
Only 70 per cent of children in Mission receive the needed childhood immunizations before they turn two! We need to do better!
Why is it important to get immunized?
• Vaccines protect your child against serious illness even death such as –
o Polio can causes paralysis
o 10% of measles infections cause brain infection – lifetime brain damage
o Mumps is a significant cause of sterility and deafness.
• Vaccines are effective
o Measles vaccine is more than 95% effective
o Measles vaccination is associated with reduced non measles deaths and illness.
o Measles vaccination has prevented more than 25 Million Deaths
We need to prevent every infection that we can.
• Immunizing your child protects others – Especially family members, babies and at risk people, such as those receiving cancer treatment.
• Vaccine-preventable diseases have not gone away: Our high immunization rates have made these diseases rare. But we have seen recent outbreaks of measles and polio due to lack of Immunization.
• Vaccines build immunity: Just like our muscles, our immune system becomes stronger with use. Immunization trains our immunity making it work better!
• Vaccines are Safe! Every vaccine in Canada has to go through serious safety testing before it is approved. Once the vaccine is approved, public health continues to monitor and review side effects to make sure there are no unexpected effects from the vaccine. Vaccine development, licensing and monitoring of any side effects, are parts of a highly regulated process.
How can you make immunizations a positive experience?
Use the C.A.R.D. approach
• Comfort: Think about what will make your child comfortable during the appointment. Some ideas include bringing a stuffed animal or having your child come in pyjamas.
• Ask: Think about what questions you or your child would like to ask the doctor or nurse so that you feel more prepared.
• Relax: Try to relax and encourage your child to relax with you. Use slow deep breaths or bring a friend for support.
• Distract: Give your child something else to focus on during the immunization.
What can you do to support immunization efforts in Mission?
1. Ask your doctor, nurse practitioner, pharmacist about immunization.
2. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of immunization.
3. Share the C.A.R.D. system with anyone who may be nervous about immunizations.
4. Visit www.healthgateway. gov.bc.ca to see if your family’s immunizations are up-to-date.
5. Book an immunization appointment to get immunized.
o Call your primary care provider or pharmacist
o Book an appointment with Public Health by calling 604-7024906

Nissan Z- Iconic Sportscar Offers
More Performance Thrills.
Review by Veeno Dewan
The new 2023 Nissan Z sports coupe completes its 50-plus years of heritage and continues to please global fans. The new 7th generation Z design still has the classic long hood, short deck low stance and a silhouette that pays homage to the first-generation Z.
acceleration and limited top speed of 250 kph.
The transmission is either a choice of a 9-speed automatic or a more preferable 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission with SynchroRev Match® rev matching and
The 2023 Z’s 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo engine adds a significant bump in power output over the previous generation 370Z. The Z’s lines are sleek, clean, and devoid of the sometimesugly garish strakes, vents, spoilers, and wings slapped onto some modern-day coupes. Instead, it has a few tastefully executed retro-modern design cues, with a cleaner front grille and a distinctively cool rear design with lights similar to the old 240 Z version. The interior pays homage to its DNA too with the iconic three pod analog dashboard gauges that display the boost pressure, turbo RPMs, and battery voltage.
In terms of power, there is a significant increase with a V6 engine rated at 400 horsepower at 6,400rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque starting from 1,600 to 5,600 rpm. With an increase of 68 horsepower and a30 percent increase in torque, over the previous model, the engine has an estimated 15 percent improvement in 0 to 100 Kph
an EXEDY® high-performance clutch. For the Canadian market, the 2023Nissan Z will be offered in Sport and Performance (As tested) models, each with a choice of a 6-speed manual or new 9-speed automatic transmission.
The Nissan Z starts at $46,498 – plus a freight charge of $1,950. The Z Performance model as reviewed, adds the rev-matching feature, limited-slip diff, and high-performance brakes, 19 -inch Rays alloy wheels and high - performance tires. Z Performance models equipped with a manual transmission also include an advanced launch assist control system for quicker off the line acceleration. But the prices rises to $58,498 plus freight and optional paint color, A full range of convenience features are offered as standard equipment, with the Z Performance grade adding an 8-speaker Bose® Audio system with Active Noise Cancellation and Active Sound Enhancement.

The 2023 Z cabin is contemporary in design and form modern with a few well-integrated retro touches and modern technology. The cabin features high-quality synthetic suede material, and premium leather covered seats and steering wheel. The
upshift indicator as found on pro race cars as a shifter guide. The clutch is fairly light and has some travel before you hit the biting point. If you opt for the Performance trim, Nissan gives you the auto rev-matching feature for even smoother, quicker applied
centre stack takes inspiration from other previous Z version with the cool, iconic three analog pod gauges on the instrument panel. There is an 8.0-inch touch screen and audio display in the centre stack and climate control switches near the shifter.
On the road, the Z offers very quick acceleration with maximum torque coming as early as 1,600 rpm. Turbo lag is minimal, it revs fast and the 400 horsepower is delightfully metered out just eats up straight line roads , whilst the beefy brakes rein in for deceleration for twisty back roads and fats tight curves with nary an effort. The engine’s 400 horsepower is tractable and a jewel of an engine. The exhaust note in the Z sounds fantastic being urgent, and raspy with a real crackle on startup.
The short throw shifter can be a shade notchy at first in the lower gear range , and you really have to be masterful in the beginning at snicking in gears solidly until you get a feel for the shifter. However, Nissan also installed an
The new Z’s steering is pin sharp and direct, the suspension well calibrated for sport driving and the front fourpiston brakes inspire confidence. The Z is an ideal track car when properly equipped with the right tires, but in everyday driving exhibits good road manners and a not too harsh ride.
Downsides are few, The Z is a tad thirsty on fuel, and the Performance Upgrade is more expensive. Fuel Consumption (Combined ) is L/100km: 11.90. Starting at $46,498 for the Sport model with the manual transmission, it’s one of the best bargains in the coupe market and will not disappoint in any way. The Performance version is the one to stretch for if possible. A superbly optimised quick agile and fun to classic sports car.
2023 Z starts: at base price $46,498. Performance model as tested$59,448 plus PDE and freight.

Canadian consumers seek out sustainably produced food
(NC) As many Canadians are interested in sustainably grown food, various agricultural industries and farmers are embracing practices that meet the demands of conscientious shoppers. The strawberry industry is a prime example of the strides made in agriculture in pursuit of sustainability.
There is high demand for strawberries in Canada – in fact, far more than domestic production can supply. Almost 100 per cent of strawberries imported into Canada come from California, allowing us to enjoy this favourite berry year-round. These strawberries are grown on multi-generation farms with sustainable techniques to minimize environmental impact. For instance, farmers prioritize hand weeding to reduce the need for chemical herbicides, use mechanical bug vacuums that effectively remove harmful insects (which re-
duces reliance on pesticides), release beneficial insects like ladybugs as a primary defense against pests and opt for fish emulsion as a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers.
The California strawberry industry also invests millions of dollars into crop research, leading the world in environmental research dedicated to reducing pesticide use. Find more information on sustainable strawberry production at californiastrawberries. com.

Insurance advice for home-based businesses
(NC) For small business owners who are operating their business out of their home, it is important to assess the level of business insurance coverage that you and your business require. This goes beyond your standard home insurance policy. Your home insurance policy may cover certain activities for your business, however, the coverage limits are generally much lower than what you would receive through a small business insurance policy.
There are also certain types of coverage that your home insurance policy would not cover. For example, if your business is temporarily shut down due to an insured event, you would not be covered for any loss of income during this period. Or if a customer is visiting your home-based business, and slips and injures themselves on your premises, you may not be
covered under your home insurance policy if you are found liable. With providers such as TD Insurance, you can customize your small business insurance policy based on the needs of your business.
For home-based small business owners, you can learn more by contacting a licensed insurance advisor who can help you address any questions about insurance for your home-based business. You can also find more information at tdinsurance.com.

Abbotsford Hospice Society Announces a Credited Grief Support Course
Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS) is proud to announce their launch of a new accredited Grief Support Course. AHS has partnered with the University of the Fraser Valley’s Community Health and Social Innovation (CHASI) Hub to develop an interactive, web-based learning platform, a significant milestone towards becoming the first hospice society in British Columbia to provide professionals and volunteers with accredited recognition of their learning. This achievement will greatly enhance this community’s education, care, and support to individuals and families experiencing grief and loss personally and in their work environments.
Abbotsford Hospice Society is thrilled to extend its training beyond its valued volunteer community to other individuals, regions, and communities in British Columbia. This expertly developed course would cover introductory and some intermediate aspects of palliative care and grief support.
The curriculum provides professional development opportunities for:
• Family physicians or palliative care physicians
• Care staff and support staff, from palliative care, home care, or long-term care homes
• Family practice residents and students
• Pharmacists, Social workers, Psychiatrists, Counsellors
• Medical students and other professionals with an interest in palliative care
• Abbotsford School District for High School student education credits
• Community Hospice and PCCU unit in the Hospital volunteers
This Grief Support Course speaks to the importance of educating people of all ages, cultures, and professions regarding end-of-life care, giving our community a beter way to con-
nect with those who are terminally ill, their families, and friends for the critical support needed before and after the loss of a loved one.
Abbotsford Hospice Society extends its deepest gratitude to the First West Foundation for partnering with this initiative and generously donating the funds needed to develop this in-
novative initiative. The grant is part of First West Credit Union’s newest endowment, Keeping A Good Thing Growing. The support of the First West Foundation has been instrumental in enabling the society to forge this partnership with the CHASI Hub to expand and advance education and awareness locally and across the province of BC.

Top 5 Reasons Life Insurance Claims are denied
You planned ahead and got life insurance to provide financial protection for your loved ones. A life insurance denial is not part of your plan, but it can happen. Sometimes insurance companies refuse to pay out, life insurance claim denials are crucial to understand. Understand the reasons for life insurance claim denials. The knowledge ensures you choose the right policy. Right policy instills confidence that your loved ones will receive the financial protection you’ve planned for them. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the options you have if a life insurance denial happens, as we’ll discuss below.
What are the top 5 reasons for a life insurance denial?
1) False information in the life insurance application
The insurance company can deny a life insurance claim if the policyholder misrepresents, withholds, or omits important information. In the insurance application details given should be correct. Examples include lying about your age, withholding the fact that you are a smoker, or failing
to disclose a pre-existing condition like depression or diabetes.
2) Policy exclusions
Life insurance policies often exclude coverage for certain types of deaths or other circumstances. Common exclusions include death caused by suicide, drug overdose, illegal activity, and specified hazardous activities (e.g., skydiving, bungee jumping). Every life insurance policy is unique. It is so important to read and understand the exclusions in your specific policy. If death is caused by factors excluded by the policy, the insurance company will deny the claim.
3) Expiration of term life policy
Term life insurance policies provide coverage for a specific period of time, known as the policy term (e.g., 5 years, 20 years). If you outlive the policy term and don’t renew coverage before it expires (assuming renewal is an option), the policy will lapse. The insurance company will not pay out if you die after the policy term has expired.
4) Non-payment of premiums
A life insurance policy can lapse due to non-payment of premiums. Once you miss a certain number of payments (set out in your policy), the insurance policy will lapse and no longer be in force. If you die while the policy is lapsed due to missed premium payments, the insurer can deny the claim.
The insurance company will deny a life insurance claim if fraud is suspected. Fraud in this context means intentionally providing false or misleading information to obtain insurance or to receive a death benefit from a life insurance policy. Examples of insurance fraud include lying on the insurance application (e.g., providing false information about your health or hiding a pre-existing condition), providing false information about the cause of death, and staging or faking death.
Options when life insurance denial happens
It may be possible to contest or appeal an insurance denial or reinstate a cancelled policy. For example, if the reason is non-payment of premiums, it may be possible to appeal the denial or reinstate the policy by making up missed premiums.
If your life insurance claim is denied, you must carefully review your policy and the written reasons for the denial. Additional documentation or evidence such as medical records,
police records, or an autopsy report will be needed to strengthen the appeal. You should also consider seeking legal advice to contest the denial of a life insurance claim.

The Taste of Abby Fall Food Festival Returns
Celebrating Abbotsford’s Handmade and Homegrown Seasonal Flavours, Food Culture, and Culinary Experiences
The Taste of Abby returns this fall, inviting everyone to explore Abbotsford’s agriculture and culinary scene. Held from September 15th to 24th this fall food festival launches with a night market followed by a week of unique farm experiences, seasonal bites, spirit, cider, and beer releases, a guided Circle Farm Tour, a foraging workshop, the art and wine walk in Historic Downtown Abbotsford, grape stomping, discussions on healthy food systems, and the annual Food and Farm Excellence Awards.
“Tourism Abbotsford is full of anticipation for the 2nd annual Taste of Abby Fall Food Festival. In our first year, we surpassed our expectations and are thrilled seeing our community partners enthusiastically jump on board with programming, events, activations, and limited product offerings.
Beyond the opportunity to savour some delicious dishes, the festival introduces
brewers, makers and producers to create a unique community showcase with events happening for more than a week across our community.
This rich food culture is part of what makes Abbotsford the cultural and economic hub of the Fraser Valley. I look forward to seeing residents and visitors, alike, throughout the event enjoying all that Abbotsford has to offer as a premiere food tourism destination, says Ross Siemens, Mayor of Abbotsford.
Throughout the week, visitors can experience a variety of food creations and farm-to-table menus, and fun events that include everything from bees and robotic animals to pickleball and pints. Sponsored by the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the week ends with the Food and Farm Excellence Awards, recognizing Abbotsford’s best culinary talents and agricultural producers with awards presented at Eco Dairy on September 24th.
residents and visitors to new and local experiences, connecting them with the growers and producers responsible for these amazing flavours and ingredients,” says Craig Nichols, Executive Director of Tourism Abbotsford.
The September 15th evening night market will be held at Jubilee Park in Historic Downtown Abbotsford bringing live music from local musicians, artisan shopping, and fall flavours from Abbotsford’s makers including farmers, chefs, and winery, brewery and cidery owners.
“Abbotsford’s annual Taste of Abby showcases some of the top culinary experiences our community has to offer. At the peak of harvest, our growers and their farm-fresh, high-quality foods join together with the extraordinary culinary skills of our local chefs,
“From farm growers to restaurants, agriculture is at the forefront of many of Abbotsford’s most thriving enterprises. That’s why the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce is proud to support another year of Taste of Abby because it’s an opportunity to highlight the diversity of what is grown in this community and build on Abbotsford’s reputation as an emerging leader at the intersection of the food, hospitality, and farming nexus,” says Alex Mitchell, CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.
The healthy food systems video series will run throughout Taste of Abby. Facilitated by Aaron Pete, host of the Bigger Than Me podcast, four people were chosen to discuss sustainable and heathy food systems in three-to-fiveminute videos. Co-owner and Chef, Jeff Massey, of Restaurant 62 will speak to collaborating with local food growers, Amir Maan from Maan Farms will be discussing ag tech
integration and vertical strawberry farming, Paul Sweeting, owner of Raven’s Brewing will share his Indigenous-owned business plans, and MLA Pam Alexis, the Minister of Agriculture, will talk about the government’s efforts to enable and protect healthy food systems.

Over $700,000 in New Funding Approved for Non Profits & Charities In Abbotsford, Agassiz, Chilliwack and Hope
Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) approved over $700,000 in funding through the Community Services Recovery Fund in local communities.
On November 23rd, 2022, the former Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Karina Gould, announced that Community Foundations of Canada alongside Canadian Red Cross, and United Way Centraide Canada had been selected to distribute the Community Services Recovery Fund. This investment of one-time $400 million was focused on helping charities, non-profits and Indigenous Governing Bodies acquire the tools they needed to adapt and modernize so they can better support pandemic recovery in communities across Canada.
The Abbotsford Community Foundation was proud to have been one of the many community foundations across Canada, helping to distribute these Funds. Applications closed February 21st with the Foundation receiving 28 applications with an ask of over $1.7 million. With just over $701,000 in funding, the adjudication decisions were the responsibility of the Foundations’ Community Grants Committee. Denise Thandi, Committee Chair, noted, “The [Community] Grants Committee worked diligently through the tremendously difficult task of reviewing each and every application and determining which projects would receive funding and what funding amounts would be allocated to those projects.”
While the funds were distributed in June to successful fund applicants, it is only recently that The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) is able to formally announce the recipients of the Community Services Recovery Fund for Abbotsford, Agassiz, Chilliwack, and Hope:
• Abbotsford Arts Council$34,001
• Abbotsford Judo Club$29,300
• Agassiz-Harrison Historical Society - $13,692
• Archway Community Services - $52,100
• BeMorr Society for Mental Heath and Suicide Awareness$15,000
• Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley - $97,313
• Chilliwack ElderCollege$12,303
• Chilliwack Film Society$32,500
• Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra - $12,000
• Chilliwack Park Society$22,200
• Communitas Supportive Care Society - $82,819
• Hope and Area Transition Society - $45,600
• Hope Community Services$30,000
• Optimist Club of Chilliwack Imagination Library Fraser Valley$16,541
• Skwah First Nation - $73,975
• The Centre for Epilepsy and Seizure Education in British Columbia - $72,300
• The Salvation Army Chilliwack - $39,356
• West Abbotsford Community School Society - $20,000
As a result of the investments provided by the Community Services Recovery Fund, charities, nonprofits, and Indigenous Governing Bodies will be better equipped to improve the efficacy, accessibility, and sustainability of the community services that they provide.
Multicultural Food Sharing Event Brings Together Cultures
More than 100 community members enjoyed a variety of foods from different cultures at the Multicultural Food Sharing Event hosted by Archway Community Services on Wednesday, August 23rd at Mill Lake.
“In many cultures, food is central to bringing people together,” said Sumaiyyah Adam, a Community Coordinator with the Archway Diversity Education program.
“This event was created to bring the community together to celebrate diversity, build connections, and create an opportunity to get involved in the local food ecosystem.”
Volunteer cooks prepared the Ukrainian, Middle Eastern, Kenyan, Indian, and Taiwanese food at Seven Oaks Alliance Church.
Attendees got to sample various dishes including mukimo, savoury and sweet varenyky (perogies), chow mein, platz, falafel, samosas and curry. A mini golf course was available at the event along with booths representing local organizations and community resources.
“We are so appreciative to all the volunteers and partners who offered their time and put thought into the dishes they shared. The foods that were offered at the event were all traditional foods and it was beautiful to see different members of the community being involved and trying something new!” shared Vicki Lin, Supervisor of the Archway Food Justice program.
United Way BC, Lepp’s Bakehouse, the Community Services team of City of Abbotsford and Abbotsford Tourism helped provide funds, food, space and activities. Additional food was purchased from BIPOC-owned businesses like Yaffa Café and Gian’s Indian Cuisine.
The event was a joint project between Archway’s Food Justice and Diversity Education programs. Many of the volunteer cooks were clients
"The sight of all of those groups of volunteers laughing and sharing and working together in the kitchen all day was sheer joy for everyone who had a chance to see it happening," said Brian Robertson, Lead Associate Pastor at Seven Oak Alliance Church and Archway board member.
In addition to the community building between the cooks, attendees had the opportunity to meet the cooks and gather with other community members from diverse backgrounds. The volunteer cooks served the food along with information about their respective homelands and cultures.
of Archway’s Settlement Services programs which help thousands of newcomers integrate into their community.
"Food is a universal language and it was so lovely to see all the cooks laughing and taking pictures together and sharing their food and trying new things! Language is not as much of a barrier as we often think it is and it was so great to see them make those connections with other members of the community," said Lin.
