Padmashree GEETA CHANDRAN A celebrated artist and a star-performer, Geeta Chandran is synonymous with the Indian classical dance: Bharatanatyam. Since the age of five, when she began learning this temple dance form under the tutelage of several eminent and great Gurus, she has been an advocate for the dance and is probably Bharatanatyam's best-known brand ambassador. Recipient of many prestigious national and international awards, fellowships and honours, including the prestigious national Padma Shri award bestowed on her by the President of India, Geeta is celebrated not only for her deep and composite understanding of the art of Bharatanatyam, but also for her Carnatic music (she is an accomplished vocalist), her work in television, video and film, theatre, choreography, dance education, dance activism and danceissue journalism. Founder-President of Natya-Vriksha, where she teaches Bharatanatyam to over one hundred disciples, Geeta is also Artistic Director of the Natya Vriksha Dance Company, which has traveled all over the world with its superb dance presentations.

SHARANYA CHANDRAN Daughter and disciple of (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran, Sharanya was born into Bharatanatyam. From the tender age of 4, she began learning both from her mother and Guru K.N. Dakshinamurthi. Nationally graded, Sharanya has performed both as a soloist and also as part of the Natya Vriksha Dance Company, and has travelled widely for performances, including the Lincoln Centre in New York and the Thai Cultural Centre in Bangkok. Sharanya has also traveled all over India, accompanying Geeta on performances and for lecture-demonstrations. Sharanya is also trained in nattuvangam by Geeta Chandran and has accompanied her in performances all over the world. She also assists Geeta in teaching at Natya Vriksha. She holds a Masters degree in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, which she completed as an INLAKS scholar.


A maestro of Kathak dance, she is a well known name that appears on the top in the list of eminent classical dancers of India. Her wonderful performances have left the people awestruck. Her teacher is none other than the famous Birju Maharaj. Well, we are talking about the great Indian Kathak dancer Shovana Narayan. In this article, we will present you with the biography of Kathak dancer Shovana Narayan. At a very young age of four, Shovana Narayan started learning Kathak from the renowned dancer cum actress of the past Sadhana Bose in Calcutta (now Kolkata). She completed her Masters degree in Physics from Miranda House in Delhi. She tied her wedding knots with Dr. Herbert von Traxi, Austrian Ambassador to India. Also known as the Kathak queen, she is so much involved in dancing that she cannot imagine her life without it. It is not just a hobby for her, but the motive of her life. Shovana Narayan has given an entirely new dimension to dancing. She is an accomplished dancer, whose facial expressions complements her dance and makes her performance simply outstanding. Neha Mondal Post graduate in Bharatnatyam dance form from KALAKSHETRA FOUNDATION (rukmini devi college of fine arts) Chennai. Garnered applause for her performances in major concerts and festivals of India & abroad in her solo as well as troupe performances. Awarded Scholarship in bharatnatyam in the year 1995 under CCRT's “Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme� Awarded 'scholarship to young artist' by the Government of India in Bharatnatyam. Performed broadly with kalakshetra's (Rukmini devi college of fine arts) dance troupe and also took part in the major dance festivals and dance dramas like the RAMAYANA SERIES. Recognised as an A-grade artist and worked in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for a period of one year. During this period, given a no.of Indian folk and contemporary performances throughout India.

Nitisha Mondal Daughter and disciple of (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran, Sharanya was born into Bharatanatyam. From the tender age of 4, she began learning both from her mother and Guru K.N. Yamika Yamika is one of the prime young performers of the Lucknow Gharana. She is a disciple of Pt. Guru Jaikishan Maharaj and has been trained under guru Smt. Malti Shyam and Guru Deepak Maharaj. She has learnt Kathak from Kathak Kendra for ten years and she is a scholarship holder throughout. A Visharad from Bhatkhande Vidyapeeth with First distinction. She has performed at different prestigious dance festivals in India and abroad which includes Amethi Kathak Mahotsav , Kathak Mahotsav at Sultanpur, Performance at President house of Mauritus, dance ballot at Belgium. She is a proficient Classical singer and has learnt music from Shri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. She combines her presentations with a fine balance of nritta and abhinaya.

Punita is one of the very few performers who can trace the shadow falling between movements and ideas beautifully. Punita Sharma belongs to that new breed of classical Indian dancers who imbibes modernity with tradition. Obtained master's from the reputed Kathak Kendra, New Delhi Praveen from Prayag Sangit Samiti, Allahabad, and was awarded gold medal. The gifted dancer has completely devoted herself to kathak as her life's passion, for the past one decade. Punita is a disciple of the Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj of the Lucknow gharana and Mridul Chandra Misra of the Banaras Gharana. She has performed at national and international forums and also choreographed ballets on mythological and social issues. She, very recently, has had rechoreographed the Krishna Leela, a Natya Ballet production. She obtained junior fellowship & Scholarship from Ministry of Culture Govt. of India & also got Research fellowship from Sangeet Natak Akademi New Delhi. A graded artist of kathak from Delhi Doordarshan. She is the Gen. Secretary Rag Virag Education & Cultural Society, Principal, Centre Superintendent and Guru, Rag Virag Repertory group under grant-in-aid scheme Ministry of Culture She is an empanelled artist of ICCR.

Punita Sharma


Trained in Bharatanatyam dance form under the tutelage of eminent gurus Padam Shri Guru Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan and Smt Sarmishta Mallick. Garnered applause for her performances in major concerts and festivals of India in her solo as well as troupe performances. Also taking training in Sarraikela stye of Chauu under Guru Shashidhar Acharya. Performed widely in India as well as in abroad and gave commendable performances in major cultural festivals of India. Some of them are Khajuraho Festival, Mahabalipuram festival, Rajgir festival, Chakradhara Mahotsav etc. Participated and won many dance competitions at professional level. Also won 'Yuva Pratibha Puraskar' 2006 from Chakrapani's world school of music. Empanelled artist of IWCF, India World Cultural Forum. Graded artist of Delhi Doordershan Kendra. Awarded by scholarship by state govt. Sahitya kala parishad.
