Traditionally, when a theatre closes for the night, a lamp is placed on the stage and left on. The “ghost light” is left on for any ghosts who may visit. When a theatre goes out of business, it is referred to as “going dark,” and so, the ghost light also chases away even a metaphoric connection to that kind of darkness.
