Whether you’re looking to make memories with the kids or soak up the festive atmosphere, our guide has something for everyone.
And for an extra bit of festive fun, we’ve hidden Santas throughout this issue! Spot them all and you could win tickets to The Deco Theatre’s 2024 Christmas panto, Peter Pan. So, keep your eyes peeled and get counting!
For those looking for a more peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to check out our feature on the River Nene. Glazing Experts!
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford Trevor Skidmore it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for a number of years. Since buying the franchise in 2006, Trevor & Wendy now have their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross and daughter in law Lori involved along with Dan, Tom & Jo and have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Excitement builds for Northampton’s November fireworks spectacular
Northampton Town Council’s Fireworks Spectacular returns to the Racecourse this November, promising an evening of entertainment and a dramatic pyrotechnic display.
On Saturday, 2 November, Northampton’s Racecourse will again host the annual Fireworks Spectacular. Starting at 4.00pm, the free event will feature live music, performances, and family attractions, all leading up to a grand fireworks finale at 6.00pm.
This year’s event is expected to draw thousands of local residents and visitors, offering a wide range of activities designed to appeal to all ages. Highlights include a performance by popular local band Whiteroom and a high-energy Fire and Pyrotechnic Show, presented by Live Performers, with BBC Radio Northampton’s Bernie Keith acting as compère throughout the evening.
A unique feature of this year’s celebration will be the screening of Gunpowder Plot Story
the Town Council, exploring the county’s historic links to Guy Fawkes Night, with local actors and landmarks bringing the tale to life.
In addition to live entertainment, families can enjoy traditional fairground rides, face painting and a wide selection of food stalls. Hot drinks and seasonal treats will be available throughout
the evening as the countdown to the fireworks display begins.
Councillor Jane Birch, Chair of the Community Services Committee, said: “The annual fireworks spectacular is a beloved tradition in our community, and we are excited to bring new elements each year. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to come together and mark this annual event. Best of all, entry is free… we can’t wait to see everyone there!”
While the event itself is free to attend, charges will apply for certain attractions, including funfair rides and some food and drink stalls.
The event has been made possible thanks to the support of local businesses, with special thanks extended to Maintenance Services Electrical Ltd, the headline sponsor, for their continued commitment to ensuring Northampton’s fireworks night remains a key fixture on the community calendar.

Silver surfers are divorcing more often
Currently, 1 in 4 divorces involve couples aged over 50. The high proportion of later life divorces reflects wider societal trends. It is no longer unusual for women to have careers and financial independence. It is no longer necessary for people to stay in loveless marriages, especially once adult children have left home. An increased life expectancy is also a contributing factor, with potentially decades of good health ahead, following retirement. Other reasons cited include the lack of stigma now attached to divorce.
Getting a divorce is never easy, but it may be especially daunting in later life, when you have potentially been with someone for a long time. It may feel like you are starting all over again. It is important to seek specialist advice about the financial implications of separating at an early stage.
Before reaching any agreement, each party should provide the other with full details of their financial circumstances. It may take some time to reach a financial agreement
with your spouse and you will need to be prepared for an in depth process. I will always look to negotiate an agreement which meets a client’s needs. Most of the time, a client’s priority is to ensure they are able to afford a new home and have an income to support their new life.
With a long marriage, the starting point is usually an equal division of the capital assets and pension assets. It may also be necessary for a maintenance award to be put in place if, for example, the parties are still of working age and there is a significant disparity of income.
With capital, this will often mean looking at how to divide equity in the family home. In practical terms, the family home may need to be sold in order to provide each party with sufficient capital to rehouse.
“Getting a divorce is never easy, but it may be especially daunting in later life, when you have potentially been with someone for a long time.”
In many divorces involving retired couples, pensions are the main source of income. With pensions, equality can be achieved by a pension sharing order. Whilst the basic state pension cannot be shared on divorce, the additional state pension can be subject to a pension sharing order, as can an occupational pension. Another option is offsetting, where one party takes a greater share of the capital assets in lieu of pension sharing.
Following a divorce, new wills should be drafted. It is important to ensure that a will reflects an individual’s wishes in terms of who should benefit from assets post-divorce. There are also Inheritance Tax consequences to consider and advice should be taken as a divorce means that a couple loses the right to transfer assets between them.
Divorcing in later life can be simple and straight forward, so long as the appropriate steps are taken and legal advice is obtained at an early stage. It is never too late to lay the foundations for a new life. Wilson Browne can assist you in laying those foundations.

Borneo Martell Turner Coulston pledges support to charities during Will writing campaign
Asolicitors firm in Northamptonshire has pledged its support to seven charities by signing up to an annual Will-writing campaign.
Borneo Martell Turner Coulston has been a part of the Will Aid scheme for over 15 years helping raise vital donations every November by writing basic Wills and waiving their usual fee, instead inviting clients to make an upfront donation to Will Aid.
In total, the firm has raised over £107,000.00 for Will Aid since it first took part and is aiming to make this their best year yet.
Susan Owens said: “Will Aid is an exceptional campaign, that offers people the chance to get a professionally written Will while supporting important causes that change lives for the better both here in the UK and around the world.
“As solicitors, we’re delighted to volunteer our time and expertise to support such a fantastic campaign and are hoping to raise a lot of money that will go towards supporting vulnerable people both here in the UK and overseas, many of whom have been further impacted by the cost-ofliving crisis.”
Solicitors taking part in the campaign waive their fees for Will-writing services throughout November, instead inviting clients to make a voluntary donation to Will Aid.
The suggested voluntary donation for a basic single Will is £100, or £180 for a pair of mirror Wills.
Donations support seven of the UK’s best-loved charities: Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, SCIAF (Scotland), and Trócaire (N. Ireland).
In total, Will Aid has raised more than £24 million in donations, and many millions more in pledged legacies, for the nine partner charities since it launched in 1988.
Celebrity supporters include national treasure Dame Judi Dench and Robert Peston.
This year the charity conducted a poll that revealed that 67% of UK adults either don’t have a Will or have one that’s out of date.
Peter de Vena Franks, Will Aid campaign director, said: “We are very grateful that
Borneo Martell Turner Coulston has signed up to this year’s campaign, it is only thanks to the commitment of firms like Borneo Martell Turner Coulston volunteering their time that the campaign can continue to raise much-needed donations for our partner charities.
“More than half of UK adults still do not have a Will, so this November is a great time to tick that task off your list while supporting the incredible work of our partner charities.”
There is still time for other solicitors to volunteer their time to take part in this year’s campaign.

Looking for a lease deal? It’s good to talk
Come in, sit down. How can we help? Welcome to the Yellow Car Shop, taking vehicle buying and leasing back to the future.
Looking for a new vehicle largely takes place online these days. We are fast becoming accustomed to trawling through innumerable websites looking for the right car, van or truck at the right price or with the right deal. Wouldn’t it be a joy if there were somewhere we could call into, sit down, enjoy a coffee and talk through exactly what we are looking for within the budget we have set for ourselves?
The principle applies whether it is an individual looking to change a vehicle for a newer model or a business customer seeking the fleet deal that is right for the organisation.
Great news… there is a door open and expert staff waiting to welcome you.
Welcome to The Yellow Car Shop. Founded in 2009, director Chris Robinson has grown the business into one that puts customer service and listening to the client’s requirements front and centre of everything it does. The company works with fleet
managers in businesses of all sizes across Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire as well as greeting individual motorists as they visit in quest of the best deal.
“The business is designed to have everything under one roof,” said Chris. “We want people to come and visit us, sit down, have a conversation about what they are looking for and we will see how we can help.”
Chris and his colleagues at The Yellow Car Shop look at all makes and models of cars and vans in search of the most suitable deal for each individual client. It saves time scouring the dealers for the right vehicle and the best deal, he said. And The Yellow Car Shop guarantees to be cheaper than the deals found in the main dealerships. For business customers, The Yellow Car Shop’s expertise includes a dedicated fleet and business specialist who has worked in the industry for almost 20 years.
Chris Robinson – it’s all about personal service
When Chris set up the business in 2009, it was part of a franchise. Such was the success and rate of growth that Chris and his team took the business solo in 2017. “We were outgrowing the franchise and since then we have not looked back,” Chris said. “Covid has an impact, of course, but we have been rebuilding steadily since then.”
The vehicle industry is a far cry from Chris’s background. He cut his professional teeth running restaurants and pubs while his wife worked a 9-5 job. Looking to align their working hours to spend more time together as a family led to the move into vehicle leasing. “I have always had a passion for cars, though,” Chris said. “The career change simply took that a stage further.”
“Purchasing a vehicle is a very big deal for a lot of people. It is one of the biggest purchases they will make and we understand that fully. That is why we listen to what our customer wants and do our best to deliver.”
The hospitality sector is all about the standard of service. Vehicle leasing is no different, certainly at the Yellow Car Shop.
“Personal service is what it is all about,” Chris said.
An example occurred only last week when The Yellow Car Shop took delivery at its
office of a teacher customer’s new car and delivered it to his home in time for his return from work.
“He was not able to come to the office to collect it so we were more than happy to take it to him.”
Business is good but Chris and his colleagues have their eyes on expansion. Developing their commercial vehicles business is next on the agenda.
It is a sector in which the Yellow Car Shop is already doing business but Chris sees the potential and is looking to add a commercial vehicle specialist to the team as well.
Having a physical presence in Newport Pagnell – the Yellow Car Shop is situated just
off the busy High Street in St John’s Street –is a real advantage when it comes to setting the service standard. “Having the shop helps - there is no doubt. It gives people peace of mind that they can come and see us, outline what they are looking for and be assured that we will advise them as best we can.
“Purchasing a vehicle is a very big deal for a lot of people. It is one of the biggest purchases they will make and we understand that fully. That is why we listen to what our customer wants and do our best to deliver.”
“We are not the cheapest and we do not claim to be so. What we are all about is delivering the very best value to our clients.”

Rolling down the River Nene
Words and pictures by Laura Malpas
Journey through Northamptonshire, crossing over yet another bridge, we hardly give a thought about the river flowing by, unless of course there has been excessive rainfall. Generally, the River Nene quietly gets on with its business of travelling its one hundred and five miles through the East of England to the tidal waters of The Wash. This month I’m learning about the Nene, how it shaped the land, supports wildlife, and the human settlements which have relied upon it over several millennia.
The River Nene has existed for around ten thousand years, formed at the end of the last Ice Age when the melt waters carved out the Nene Valley. Three main tributaries and countless streams join to form the Nene, the most western is the Daventry Nene, rising near Arbury Hill, Badby. This is joined west of Weedon by the Yelvertoft Nene flowing from the north. The river then flows through Kislingbury towards the Carlsberg Brewery at Northampton, where it joins the Brampton Nene flowing from Naseby. Since 1815, the Grand Union
Canal’s Northampton Arm also joins the Nene at this point, and the now easily navigable river continues its journey eastwards along the wide Nene Valley, collecting more streams as it flows gently towards the North Sea.
Along the course of the Nene, archaeological evidence reveals traces of early human occupation from many past millennia, showing evidence of life, trade and travel. These include simple hunter gatherer fish traps, Neolithic stone tools and Bronze Age barrows.
A quiet tributary of the Nene near Oundle
At Irthlingborough, an extensive Iron Age settlement was discovered close by the river. Archaeologists unearthed roundhouses, pits, and tools, offering a rare insight into the lives of ancient Britons who lived and farmed along the Nene.
The first mention of the Nene in the historic record comes from the Roman occupation of Britain, some 2000 years ago. The conquerors recognised the strategic and economic value of the river and its meadows. Several fortifications and their accompanying towns have been revealed archaeologically, a great example can be seen at Chester House Museum. Several Roman villas with glamorous mosaics and imported goods from the continent give glimpses into the lives of the wealthy living along the banks of the Nene. Piddington Roman Villa museum has some fascinating finds showing the sophisticated lifestyles lived. Roman industry, such as gravel extraction and quarrying for roads and buildings, farming, pottery production has also left many traces near the river, along with farms and smaller settlements.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Anglo-Saxons established themselves along the Nene now in the kingdom of Mercia. The Vikings from Denmark Norway and Sweden also took advantage of the Nene using the river to gain access into the heart of England.
By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, the River Nene was central to
a successful well-watered agricultural heartland. Medieval records show increasingly large numbers of water mills along its path, utilising the steady flow of water with to produce flour. Flour and grains were essential components of the medieval economy, generating much wealth for the landowners.
Many towns and villages expanded during this period, with fine buildings still to be seen. One picturesque example lying on the banks of the Nene is the village of Fotheringhay, once home to the Yorkist Plantagenets, a dominant Royal family in the medieval period. Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed in 1587 in the castle, and the earthworks and remnants of its keep can still be explored. St Mary and All Saints Church, with its striking octagonal lantern tower overlooking the Nene, stands as a symbol of past wealth and importance. As Northamptonshire industrialised in the 18th and 19th centuries, the River Nene took on new significance. Parts of the river were canalised, creating a navigable waterway to accommodate larger vessels. This was crucial for the transport of coal, timber, and other raw materials, enabling the county to prosper during the Industrial Revolution.
The construction of the Northampton Arm in 1815 connected the river to the Grand Union Canal, linking Northamptonshire to London and Birmingham. The Nene became a highway for commercial traffic, and small riverside towns, such as Oundle
and Thrapston, flourished. While the rise of railways and motor transport eventually overshadowed the river’s role, the legacy of this era can still be seen in the locks and weirs that punctuate the river’s length.
During the 20th century, the perceived importance of the river declined, and land development took priority, putting water quality and wetlands at risk. Increasingly we are aware of the negative impact of over-development, with the reality of climate change and increased flooding becoming very evident. Conservation of our environment has now become a priority.
Today we recognise that the River Nene is more than just a water source which enabled transport links and industrial development in the past. There’s an increased importance being placed on the protection of our natural world. The Nene and its wetlands are a crucial habitat for wildlife, offering food, shelter, and breeding grounds for many animals. For birds, the wetlands provide essential

stopover points during migration and serve as wintering sites for species like waders, ducks, and geese. They are also home to rare, protected birds, such as bitterns and kingfishers. The river supports a wide range of invertebrates, fish, and amphibians, which provide food for higher species. Wetlands also act as natural water filtration systems, improving water quality and offering flood protection by absorbing excess rainfall.
This ecological balance is vital not only for wildlife but also for human communities. The Nene Rivers Trust CIO is an organisation focussed on promoting the conservation and improvement of the Nene catchment, including the heritage, well-being and education of the communities who live and work in the area. If you are interested in learning about projects helping the natural world, and the education of the public, or even getting outside and closer to the river by volunteering your time, it’s worth checking out their website to learn more.
During the colder months, the River Nene takes on a special beauty. If you enjoy a winter walk and the excitement
of a little history along the way, there are some wonderful places to enjoy all that the Nene has to offer.
Stanwick Lakes is a family friendly place to enjoy a winter walk through history and the natural world, with good paths and discovery trails, bird hides, a great playground and café.
You can enjoy scenic strolls along the Nene in the beautiful medieval town of Oundle. Nearby is the peaceful Barnwell Country Park, where the lakes and trees are particularly beautiful in winter.
The historic town of Thrapston straddling the Nene is also home to the Titchmarsh Nature Reserve. Well-marked trails through the meadows and around the lakes offer great views in winter months as flocks of birds return to roost.
Right in the centre of town, peaceful Delapré Abbey is open for scenic walks and festive events. During the Wars of the Roses in 1460, the River Nene played a part in the Battle of Northampton. Delapré Abbey, on the banks of the river, was the battlefield’s backdrop.
However you choose to spend your leisure time, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on the banks of the river. Why not wrap up warmly, and
venture outside to enjoy the Nene, a river which connects us to our past and future wellbeing.
For more information about the River Nene and places to visit, please follow the links below.
The River Nene is often pronounced either as ‘Neen’ or ‘Nen’. It seems the further east you live the more likely you are to use ‘Neen’. Folks living in Thrapston seem to be equally split, but further west of the county you are more likely to hear ‘Nen’. This difference has sparked many an argument, but both are correct!
The Northamptonshire Heritage Forum has something for everyone interested in learning more about our county’s history. If you would like more information, or are interested in joining the Forum and supporting its work, please visit www.northamptonshireheritageforum.co.uk

Light up your life this Yuletide
Newport Pagnell’s Christmas lights switch-on will happen on Saturday, November 30 this year, and before the illuminations go live, the town hosts its usual fair and entertainment.
Whether you want to enjoy some festive food, or pick up a gift for someone, the stalls occupying the High Street will have your back.
Chance your luck at the tombolas, and enjoy the seasonal stalls as you take a leisurely stroll – and the shops will be vying for your attention, too.
A procession will run from Market Hill at the bottom end of the town, to the Church of St Peter & St Paul, before the lights get turned on at around 5pm.
In Northampton, the Christmas lights event takes place on Saturday, November 23 in Market Square.
Wrap up warm and pay a visit where you will enjoy ‘a stocking-stuffed lineup of free festive fun,’ organisers promise.
Live entertainment, community stalls, festive workshops and activities will pull you in, and you’ll be in great company – with panto stars, the Mayor of Northampton and Father Christmas already confirmed to attend. The fund runs from midday to 6pm with the lights going live at 5pm.
Stony Stratford hosts its lights switch-on and fun day on Saturday, November 30 – and if you have your five year diaries to hand (well, your Smart Phones), you can make a note;
the last Saturday of November will forever be the day the lights go on moving forward.
If you’ve been before, you’ll know that thousands of people flock to the seasonal tradition, to immerse themselves in the fun. Join them and you can check out musical talent on the Market Square stage as Watlingfest returns (11.30am-4.20pm), you can listen to bells jingle when the Morris Dancers return with a range of styles and colourful costumes – and the Stony Stratford Mummers might be putting in an appearance, too.
While there, peruse the stalls selling their festive wares and maybe pick up a few pressies.
The funfair will be operational on the High Street and on the aforementioned

Market Square, and Santa is checking his schedule to see if he can take time out from his work at the North Pole to join the happenings.
Then, when darkness falls, the lantern parade returns, with this year’s theme, Puppets on Parade, which will snake a trail from London Road at York House, onto the High Street and into the Market Square ready for the countdown to the lights turn on, at 5pm.
If you’ve still got energy after all of that, let your voices loose with some carol singing.
As we mentioned, it can get very busy indeed, which makes it a bad space for doggies – so let Rover sit this one out at home, while you enjoy yourselves.

With festivities at the fore, it can be a difficult time as we remember those no longer with us.
Willen Hospice acknowledges that and invites everyone to its inclusive Lights of Love remembrance ceremony on November 30.
It’s a chance to pause the noise and instead reflect, remember and celebrate those who mean so much, but are no longer with us physically.
Wolverton’s Ridgeway Centre is the hosting venue, and the service will include talks, readings, songs and poetry.

A trip to Middleton Hall to view the seasonal lights is a festive must-do, and this year, the flick will be switched on Friday, November 15 – but only when Santa has paraded down the centre and to his Grotto.

Christmas
“Tis the season to be jolly Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la”
The Dickens of a Christmas event in Olney is a festive staple on the calendar, and really sets the mood for advent. This year’s seasonal jolly will take over the town on Sunday, December 1.
Stallholders – dressed in period costumewill be selling their wares in Market Place and outside the Maya Restaurant, and the street will be bustling with families soaking up all the cheer.
Those stalls will run the entire length of the town, and craft fairs will be hosted in The Olney Centre.
Street organ entertainers, singers, and the Olney Brass Band will all be delivering on the sound front.
The town will be packed with people, so if you are travelling, make use of the Park and Ride service which will run from Emberton Park and the Yardley Road Industrial Estate –it’s the smart way to journey in.
Anyone for a mulled wine or two? We’ll join you!
The Friday prior to the Dickens delivery, Olney’s retailers will host a special seasonal late night for shoppers; the chance to pop out after work and shop ‘til you drop without needing to race around the superstores!
Olney has a wonderful array of boutiques, craft shops and much more – just perfect for picking up unique, original presents that your nearest and dearest will love.
Stanwick Lakes will present a two day Frost Fair (Nov 23 & 24) giving you the opportunity to put some pennies and pounds in the pockets of artisan makers, and you’ll be taking ownership of some cool crafted pieces for seasonal gifts.
And closer to the big day, you can let your voices loose and stretch your legs with a Lantern Walk & Lakeside Christmas Carols (Dec 21 &22).

Olney’s St Peter & St Paul Church is preparing to play host to the Bedford Gallery Quire on Saturday, November 30.
The scene will be set, with the music being aired among the festive trees lined up inside for inspection. The traditional Christmas Concert begins at 7.30pm.
A day later, the town transforms itself for a Dickens of a Christmas - and the holy space will be filled by choirs during the day. You can join in with a good old carol session at 4pm.
In Newport Pagnell, enjoy Carols by Candlelight (Dec 22, 7pm) at St Peter & St Paul, with the church promising ‘a joyful service with readings and carols to rejoice in song and prayer’.
There are other chances to unite in song, too, with carols at All Saints in Lathbury (Dec 15, 6pm) and at St Mary’s in Moulsoe (Dec 22, 5pm).
Stalls, homemade cakes and preserves and school choirs singing for you are just a few of the things to be expected at the Christmas Fair at St Peter & St Paul Church in Newport Pagnell, running alongside the town’s seasonal lights switch-on (Nov 30).
Once that switch has been flicked, town residents and visitors will head into the confines of the church for carol singing and warming mulled wine.
While on the subject of Newport Pagnell, the Churches Together movement presents Finding the Nativity (Dec 21, 10.30am).
Children will be given trail maps and must navigate their way around the town, finding seasonal figures including the wise men, shepherds and Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. At each character stop, there will be a little activity to complete, and – eventually –everyone will end up at the United Reform Church/Mead Centre for carols.

Tree-mendous way to support Willen Hospice
When the festive firs have played their part at the centre of the home and time has been called on their welcome, there is the question of what to do with them.
Willen Hospice to the rescue! The charity has announced that, once again, it will be hosting its Christmas Tree collection between January 3 and 5.
For a suggested donation of £10, volunteers will collect your tree from outside your property.
It will then be taken to be chipped and given a new lease of life – as mulch on both public and Parks Trust land.

Joanne Clifton and Andy Day star in Royal & Derngate’s Cinderella
Strictly Come Dancing champion and musical theatre star Joanne Clifton and CBeebies favourite Andy Day will be heading up the cast in Royal & Derngate’s family pantomime this Christmas. This spectacular show takes to the Derngate stage from Friday 6 to Tuesday 31 December.
Rising to fame as a professional dancer on Strictly, where she lifted the glitterball with her partner Ore Oduba in 2016, the world champion ballroom dancer Joanne Clifton has more recently been seen in top musical theatre productions, including The Addams Family and The Rocky Horror Show. Most recently touring as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical, Joanne will be casting her magic as the Fairy in Cinderella this Christmas.
Taking the role of Dandini is one of CBeebies’ most popular personalities, Andy Day. His many shows for the channel include the BAFTA-nominated Andy’s Wild Adventures and Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures, and he even has his own pop band Andy and the Oddsocks. He has appeared for many years in CBeebies’ annual televised pantomime in addition to starring in panto at theatres around the country.
Joining the cast as Ugly Sisters are Gordon Cooper and Matt Daines, both seasoned pantomime performers, most recently appearing together at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil last Christmas. The wonderfully talented Marcavia McCarthy takes the role
of Cinderella, with award-winning comedian Dave Bibby as Buttons and Marcellus Whyte (seen on television in Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream) as Prince Charming.
Building on the success of last year’s smash hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and 2022’s Jack and the Beanstalk, Royal & Derngate are pleased to be continuing their partnership with awardwinning pantomime producers Evolution Productions. A family business, run by husband and wife Paul Hendy and Emily Wood, Evolution are four-time winners of Pantomime of The Year in the Great British Pantomime Awards.
Written by Paul Hendy and directed by Emily Wood, Cinderella promises to be spectacular, top-quality entertainment, with lavish sets, hilarious jokes and fun for all the family.
Emily Wood added: “We’re so excited to be producing the most magical of all the pantomimes, Cinderella, with Royal & Derngate this Christmas, especially with this incredible, top-quality cast. Joanne has not only won Strictly but has also starred in numerous musicals, many of which have toured to Northampton. Andy Day is a hero to every family who has watched CBeebies in the last decade! He is a wonderful pantomime performer and we know he’ll be a huge hit with Northamptonshire audiences Joining them are two of the very best Uglies in the business, Gordon Cooper and Matt Daines, the hilarious Dave Bibby, and the wonderfully talented young actors Marcellus Whyte and Marcavia McCarthy as Prince Charming and Cinderella. We are sure to have the very best festive offering this year and we can’t wait to see you all at the ball!”

Christmas on a shoestring
all of the festivities, but for less of the green!
It’s supposed to be a time for togetherness, but it’s difficult to forget the commercialism that accompanies Christmas – and if you are struggling with rising costs throughout the year, the season of goodwill will only exacerbate the worries.
But Christmas need not cost the earth –you really can do it on a tight budget. Here are some tips to get you started...
Christmas Tree
For many, a resplendently dressed tree is the centre point of the home, but you don’t need the biggest tree in the plantation. Consider downsizing a little, or perhaps opt for a fake tree – which can be used year on year and will save you cash time and again.
Pop to the charity stores and you’ll likely find a large number of plastic alternatives; shops save donated trees all year ready for now.
The charity benefits, you benefit, and landfill is eased. It’s a win, win, win!
Decorations
Tree decorations can be picked up in second hand shops, at car boot sales and even at the local pound store, so step away from those overpriced superstores –although they are great to visit in the January sales when prices get slashed by up to 90% for a quick clearance – purchase then, and tuck away until next Christmas. Much more savvy!
Presents
It’s lovely to splash a heap of cash on gifts, but it’s not worth going into the red for –
you’ll be paying off long into 2025, when those presents will have been discarded and recipients are once again glued to their phones.
It’s simple; if you can’t afford it, don’t let credit deals make you think you can. The best gift you can give yourself is staying away from store cards.
Perhaps issue IOUs for presents in lieu, or make fun gift cards of your own for your nearest and dearest – you could offer to mow the lawn, babysit...let your imaginations loose.
Honesty is the best policy, and being short of pennies is nothing to be ashamed about. If you can’t afford Christmas this year, say so.
Food & Drink
Don’t shop brands, shop smart. We all eat with our eyes to some extent, but fancy packaging only goes in the bin, and we all overbuy. Think smart, buy what you need, and a few special treats in the supermarket basket is plenty. No-one eats dates and Christmas cake long in January, and half eaten tubs of choccies hang around for ages. Keep an eye open for offers – there are lots to be had, and even more if you bulk buy and split the cost and goods with friends, family or neighbours. This works especially well for those cases of bubbly and wine!
Cards
environmentally friendly. Many people have switched from giving cards to making charitable donations – and there is no shortage of local charities who could use a few more pennies.
Don’t fancy any of that? Then use your free minutes to make that quick call you keep promising yourself you’ll get around to. Showing someone you care with a call, a text or a Whatsapp is convenient and great for your purse!
Spread the cheer
Some of us still love getting a physical card in the mail, but we also know that the cost of a stamp is approaching astronomical – nearly as much as buying the card itself. How did the happen?!
If you are so inclined, e-cards are a much better bet, and they are definitely more
The saying goes that ‘it’s not the giving but the receiving’ that brings about the most joy, and if you do have a little extra, please think of those less well off than yourselves – and that really doesn’t need to be shedding cash; a smile and a conversation can cheer someone enormously, so go ahead – make their day!
Ice, ice baby!
Get your skates on and go glide in style with a trip to Whilton Locks Skating Rink
“It’s bigger, better and icy-er than ever before,” they promise, “Our real ice rink can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. We have a team of trained ice stewards who ensure that our rink is safe and well maintained at all times.”
If you are less Torvill and Dean and more terrible on the ice, don’t worry –you can book a push-along penguin, and there are whales and seals that you can sit on, making ice stars out of us all!
If you are looking to make a really special Christmas memory, want to entertain colleagues, or maybe celebrate a special anniversary, why not consider hiring the rink exclusively?
Whilton really is catering for all, and its Parent and Toddler ice skate is part of the offering.
These events are suitable for little folks aged four and under, and it is advisable to have one adult per child.
You can choose to pull on the traditional skates or twin bladed for added stability, and you can even take pushchairs onto the ice during these sessions!
SEN-sations Skating is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy all the fun of the skate, but with low levels of music and minimal queuing, and when you book online you can make staff aware of any ‘do’s and don’ts’ so that your children feel at ease and relaxed during their time on site.
A brilliant initiative!
Don’t forget that Northampton’s Christmas in Becket’s Park event (Dec 7) also gives you the chance to hit the ice with a magical rink in place as part of the day.
In Milton Keynes, Willen on Ice returns (Nov 7- Jan 5), and in 2024 it is promising ‘double the size and quadruple the fun!’
Thousands of twinkling lights, snow-covered spruces and the 800sqm real ice-skating rink will entice those steady on their feet onto the cold stuff.
Skate your way to Woburn Sands
Emporium and glide your way to a fun day. Now open, the emporium – on Newport Road, Woburn Sands – delivers day time sessions with additional evening events. Participants get skate hire and 45 minutes of skating time included in the ticket price, and if you are feeling a bit wibbly wobbly (we made a show of ourselves in Central Park one time!), skating aids are available to hire.
SEN and toddler sessions – where under 4s go free – will both offer reduced rink capacity.
Forget the spice of life, this month it’s all about the ice of life!

Into the WOODS
As we approach the thick of Winter, and all the excitement for Christmas, it’s time to get your woollies out. But not one’s average set of jumpers–pull out your Balmoral-worthy woollens, as spied on the catwalks for this season.
Think plaid, tweed, and herringbone wool coats; decadent moss stitch and cable knit sweaters; and pleated, patterned skirts that meet the knee or ankle. All to be worn with kitten heels, buckled ballet flats, or leather, heeled riding boots.
It was foresty tones at Burberry and Fendi, greys at Ganni, and sand at Tommy Hilfigur and Brandon Maxwell. At Moschino and JW Anderson, earthy hues came with a fiery flash of red, while Anna Sui sent models out in a clash of kitsch Autumnal orange checks and argyle diamonds.
To get the look, trot down to M&S for their new collection of cardis; dig out the best cherry red plaid on the rails at Mango; or shoot for John Lewis’ green, checkered maxi coat -- a double of the one spotted on the catwalk at Chloe.
Of course, the best hunting ground for this trend is your local charity shop, where Nanna’s button-ups and knee length kilts want unearthing. Simply bring them up-to-date with a touch of metallic (or sequins, if you’re feeling festive), this season’s obsession with buckles, leather and studs. Else find yourself a knitted hood - the accessory to keep warm this Winter, whether you’re off walking moors like one of Bronte’s It Girls, catching the bus, or sitting fireside somewhere in your imagination.

6 Waitrose Toulouse-Style or Lincolnshire Pork Sausages
1 onion, finely sliced
2 cloves garlic, sliced
2 rosemary sprigs
100ml white wine or cider (optional)
250ml fresh Cooks’ Ingredients Chicken Stock
1 heaped tsp wholegrain mustard, plus extra to serve
1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large sauté pan or shallow casserole over a medium heat. Add the sausages and fry, turning regularly, for about 10 minutes until golden all over. Remove from the pan and add the onion, garlic and rosemary (plus a splash more oil if needed). Season and cook gently for 6-8 minutes until soft.

Plant tulips now for spring colour DIGGING DEEP
You can pretend no more; summer is but a fading memory. Right now, the nights are long and dark, and the days can be just as grey and gloomy.
Along with the clocks going back, the patio furniture gets put away and the falling leaves make for a stark and bleak picture.
But gardeners know better than to turn their backs on their outdoor spaces.
“That’s not a consideration,” says Pulse’s adopted allotment ace, Jean Cocker (right), “November is quite a busy month, with lots to get tidied and sorted.
“You might need to wrap up that little bit warmer while you are working outside, but there’s nothing to really hinder your work. The last of the crops need to be cleared away and those beds need to be made ready for spring, so I’ll be doing lots of that in the coming weeks,” she said, “I’ll also be prepping to make sure that when the new year does come, we have a gorgeous pop of colour in the flower beds – it’s time to plant up the tulip bulbs.
for sorting and labelling now. It’s a job that might seem a chore, but is really important. Organisation is key, so don’t delay.”
Jean works a large plot and inevitably, things will be damaged; by weather, by wildlife, and just the simple wear and tear that occurs over time; now that summer isn’t in bloom, any outstanding jobs can be tackled in lieu of having to splash the cash on expensive replacements later on.
And, while we can’t click the switch and turn on the central heating in our gardens, many of our plants and trees like to feel cosy too – and you can help them get hunkered down before the biting temperatures come in.
“Anything delicate needs to be covered with fleece to protect it over the winter – my lemon trees will certainly be getting that treatment to ensure they provide me with great fruits next year.”
One job which is unavoidable is the continued collection of fallen leaves.
How does your garden grow?
Although the days are getting shorter, there’s still plenty to do in the garden. Clear up the remaining fallen leaves and compost them either in a wire cage or in a black bag. Some people advise leaving those that have fallen on the soil of the border, (to be pulled down into the soil by worms and decompose), while others say it is better to clear them away as they provide cover for slugs and snails.
Once borders have been tidied and weeded, fork over the compacted surface, to improve aeration and drainage. I scatter a balanced fertiliser, and then spread a mulch of spent compost over the surface for the worms to work in.
The pond will benefit from having pond weed and any over-abundant water lily roots removed. The fountain pump should be removed and cleaned for the winter and any loose kerb edging secured.
The greenhouse should be cleaned inside and out. The roof glass may be cleaned with a pressure-hose or a garden hose and a yard broom. Heaters should have a thermostat set at between 4º C and 7ºC, depending on the situation and exposure of your greenhouse. Insulation of the greenhouse may be improved by lining the inside with sheets of bubble wrap, secured by drawing pins in a wooden greenhouse, or special clips in an aluminium one.
Pelargoniums and tender fuchsias should be brought in and kept in a light, frost-free area.
If plain green shoots are seen on variegated shrubs, these should be pruned out to prevent them becoming dominant, as these reverted shoots grow more strongly and outgrow the weaker variegated shoots.
Trim long, thin shoots on bush and standard roses to reduce wind-rock during winter storms which may loosen the roots.
Emptied plant pots will be accumulating and need stacking neatly for next year’s use. Wash them in warm soapy water to ensure pests and diseases are not passed on.
“I love these perennials, and they deliver early in the year which is a treat after the depressive winter.
“Tulip leaves are very hardy too, but it is worth thinking about your planting space – battering winds can bring those flowers down before their time.”
Seed work – mentioned last issue –continues too: “If you gathered your seeds and dried them out, they will be ready
“It takes minimum effort, but ensures the garden stays tidy, and the compost heap will benefit enormously from them,” Jean said. “If, like me, you have a pond, make sure that dead leaves aren’t clogging the space, and also look to get rid of some of the plant growth, if it has been extensive during the summer.
“Perhaps leave half of the surface free from cover, but remember, it’s a balancing act, because the pond is also home to many creatures, and they won’t appreciate a rapid overhaul of their abode!”
Finally, don’t forget to check under a bonfire before lighting it, as this is a favourite spot for hedgehogs to make a nest for the winter, thinking it is safe and protected.

When it comes to designing a home, colour plays an essential role in setting the tone, mood, and personality of a space. Bright and colourful paint, wallpapers, art and accessories have the power to transform an ordinary home into a vibrant, welcoming, and dynamic place to live. Colour can affect the ambiance of a room, evoke emotions, and reflect personal style. In recent years, many homeowners have embraced the use of bold hues and patterns in interior design, moving away from neutral tones and minimalist aesthetics. Interesting colourful accents can elevate the mood of a home’s occupants, impacting on self-expression and creativity.
One of the primary reasons for incorporating bright colours into a home is their profound psychological impact. Colour has been shown to affect mood and energy levels, making it a powerful tool in interior design. For example, yellow is often associated with happiness and optimism, making it a perfect choice for a kitchen or dining room where socialising and conversation happen frequently. Similarly, vibrant shades of orange can evoke energy and excitement, ideal for spaces like home gyms or living rooms where activity and interaction occur.
Conversely, cool tones such as bright blues and greens promote relaxation and create a feeling of tranquillity. Bright blue can make a bathroom feel like a refreshing oasis, while a vibrant green can turn a bedroom into a restful sanctuary. The overall effect of these colours helps to create a harmonious living environment that supports various activities and emotional needs, making the home a more enjoyable space for its inhabitants.
Vibrant paints, wallpapers, and accessories allow homeowners to express their individuality. Unlike neutral tones, which can sometimes feel generic or impersonal, bold colours provide an opportunity to showcase unique tastes and preferences. For example, choosing a vibrant floral wallpaper for a
living room can create a focal point and convey a sense of playfulness, while deep reds or purples in a study might suggest sophistication and luxury. When used thoughtfully, bright colours can elevate a room from mundane to memorable, making it not just a place to live, but a space that tells a story. Bold accent walls, for example, can define a room’s purpose or create a visual separation between different areas in an open-plan home. For instance, a rich teal accent wall behind a bed can make a statement in an otherwise minimalist bedroom, while a colourful geometric wallpaper in a hallway can turn a transitional space into an area of interest.
Bright colours also allow homeowners to highlight architectural features or favourite pieces of furniture. Painting a staircase in a bold shade or using brightly patterned wallpaper on a feature wall draws attention to these areas, adding a sense of drama and flair. The intentional use of colour can make the space feel curated and designed with care, leaving a lasting impression on guests.
Additionally, the versatility of colourful accessories allows for frequent changes in the aesthetic of a room without requiring major renovations. Colourful curtains, rugs, and artwork can be switched out seasonally or whenever a homeowner wants to refresh a room’s look. This flexibility ensures that the space remains dynamic and can reflect changes in your evolving personal style.
The growing trend for this kind of euphoric decorating signifies a shift away from traditional, monochromatic interior design schemes. For decades, many homeowners have relied heavily on neutral palettes –beiges, whites, and greys – to create clean,
sophisticated spaces. While such designs have their appeal, a lack of layering and textural interest can result in a space with none of the warmth, energy, and dynamism that bright colour can bring. By embracing bold hues, homeowners can break free from these conventions and inject personality into their surroundings. Rooms no longer need to adhere to strict colour rules; mixing and matching bright accessories with colourful walls can result in an eclectic and joyful space. Furthermore, incorporating different textures and patterns through wallpaper, rugs, and fabrics adds depth and richness to the design, ensuring that the home feels layered and interesting.
Incorporating these vivacious colours into your home is more than just a design choice – it is a way to infuse a space with energy, creativity, and personality, and foster a more enjoyable and memorable living experience.
Exploring the creative world of Christian Hook Artist Spotlight:
We’re always excited to see the latest works by the innovative portrait artist Christian Hook. Having been named Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014, his career has soared with his work now gracing prestigious galleries and private collections.
His artistic journey began much earlier, however. Originally from Gibraltar, Hook's creativity took him from studying at Middlesex University to working for Disney, a testament to his diverse artistic influences and skills.
With experimentation his work is constantly developing, the pieces we have displayed in the gallery are regularly admired and often remarked upon. Christian Hook certainly isn't your typical portraitist.
Yes, he captures the essence of his subjects, whether film legends like Sir Ian McKellen and Judy Dench, royalty including Queen Elizabeth, or everyday people. There is always something more to the piece however, the exploration of a different perspective which has captured Hook’s imagination. Within these pieces, you'll discover a world where time plays tricks causing past and present to collide.
His paintings are like vibrant puzzles, demonstrating worlds hidden behind or
within the apparent subject of the piece. Using layer upon layer of transparent paint, Hook builds a visual history that brings us glimpses of different moments to peek through. He says:
“I believe that people are always waiting for something. We wait for something that lasts a minute, and then we’re waiting for the next thing. Everything happens in between, and this is an idea I develop in my painting.”
It’s a technique which creates a fascinating tension, with the subject appearing both familiar and fragmented, constantly in flux. With his unique approach, Hook seems to be inviting us to consider the passage of time and the evolving nature of identity.
If you’d like to find out more about Christian Hook and his works which continue to gain such high acclaim, get in touch.
Someone clearly forgot to tell promoter Phil Moore to pause and take a breath every once in a while, and so this month The Black Prince will be groaning under the weight of SBD events he has booked in.
Still, that’s good news for us sound addicts, and things start at their heaviest with Pulse favourites, and ‘almost’ local boys, Raging Speedhorn (Nov 1). Read more about them over the page.
Support comes from a name from the early noughties newly back in play, Defenestration Ashborn will take to the stage first.
Partners on and off stage, When Rivers Meet (Nov 2) are going back to their roots on their current Red Rum Duo tour – playing as a two-piece for the first time in five years, as that name suggests.
It means that fans can expect an intimate show from the rock-blues bringers, and provided they don’t have any on the road spats, the hotel bill will be cheaper too. Win-win.
Last year’s third album, Aces Are High, elevated their position and saw their following increase, and these fiercely independent artists are currently preparing their next elpee for release in early 2025.
The same night, SBD also inhabits The Lab, with a show from Nick Harper (Nov 2).
Nick is playing in support of his new album, Earth Day Blue, recorded at Abbey Road on, yup, Earth Day 2024.
It’s Harper’s 14th studio delivery, and John Leckie (Radiohead, Muse, Stone Roses) was at the production desk for this disc, with Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel) mixing.
‘The album is a flash mob of high calibre talent assembled for a few hours’ collaboration in a very special space,’ is how the press bumf describes it.
Recording took place in Studio 2, but it wasn’t the first time Nick and Roy had inhabited that space at the same time – in 1973, when Nick was a wee lad of eight, he recorded his first ever songs with John, while his dad Roy was recording his Lifemask opus, with Jimmy Page.
Nick delivered his first solo album three decades ago, and has sprinkled his magic on recordings by a creatively diverse number of artists; Lana Del Ray, Newton Faulkner, Steven Wilson, Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris among them. Heading down to the show?
‘Expect everything from the emotional to the political, from witty to virtuosic; the singular to the universal.’
East Northants fella Stevie Jones has hopped on the bill, sans his Wildfires, so be stage front nice and early to welcome him flying solo for the occasion.
60s garage punk, wild teenage trash rockabilly and primitive rock n’ roll with black metal boogie is in the musical backpack being sported by Swiss players The Monsters (Nov 13).
Giving ears good grief since back in the mid-80s, they’ve lots to choose from for the set list.
‘It’s 187% no MTV and Top 100 s*it!’ is the promise, ‘...simple one-riff-trash-rock.’
A splash of authentic ‘fampton is bill sharing, with maraca shakin’ rattle ‘n’ rollers Gogo Loco coming to play for you – Bo Diddley beats and garage rock guitar unite!
Rosalie Cunningham (Nov 15) is a regular under the SBD banner, and this time she comes bearing more gifts – tracks from her new studio album, To Shoot Another Day, which is cut loose on November 1.
‘If Kate Bush and The Beatles had a baby it would be Rosalie Cunningham,’ said Classic Rock magazine aeons ago. But we still like that sound-bite, so we’re sticking with it.
Looking Glass Alice will also play, showering barbed hooks and beats in a warped portrait of youthful dissonance.
Bobbie Dazzle will be up first. Her debut single, Back to the City, was issued in the spring, on the ultra cool Rise Above label.
Nick Harper – from witty to virtuosic
Rosalie Cunningham – back in town on November 15
Family unit The Entitled Sons
Listen in and she will take you on a nostalgic trip into quintessential 70s glam rock.
The Dirt Road Band (Nov 29) has a delicious pedigree among its members, and a longevity that most muso’s can only dream of.
Steve Walwyn has spent 45 years as a member of Dr Feelgood, and spent time with the awesome Roger Chapman of Family, The Specials bassist Horace Panter is in place, and drummer Ted Duggan has done time with Badfinger, The Beat, The Selector and Desmond Dekker. We told you there was pedigree in place here, and we weren’t fibbing.
The guys issued their debut album, Righteous a couple of months back – go take a listen over on their Bandcamp page.
The Hayden Regan Band will also play for you.
Last up, The Entitled Sons (Nov 30) leave the land of cider behind and come to shoe town for a show.
This is a real family unit – siblings Billy, Charlie, Rafferty and Larrie are joined by their father, Graham on bass duties.
Their debut single, cut loose back in 2022, made the Top 10 on iTunes within days of its release, and when the band entered into a competition battling for the chance to play Glasto, they left victorious.
As you will have read on these very pages a couple of issues back, Torus have been toasting the release of their self-titled debut album, and they’ll be all fired up when they support at this show – they will be fresh back on home turf having joined stoner aces
Fu Manchu for a trio of dates in London, Manchester and Bristol.
This trio has so many hooks that the local haberdashery is experiencing a drought!
Idle Palms are up first, bringing the rock and pop flavours evident on their self-titled debut album.
And that is the sum total of SBD’s work for the month of November.
We’ve heard rumours that Phil will then retreat to a darkened room for a few days to recover. And we’d not begrudge him!

Meet the meritorious masters of melancholic metal
Katatonia, Stockholm’s ‘architects of existential dread’ launch a busy month for the ‘mender on November 1, and the meritorious masters of melancholic metal (their words, not ours) have had more than 30 years to ripen their sounds, from doom and death metal to soul-gripping post rock.
Sky Void of Stars, their latest long-player, is the band’s 12th album, ‘...a dynamic journey through vibrant darkness,’ the band
promises, ‘Born out of yearning for what was lost and not found, the very peripheries of the unreachable, but composed and condensed into human form and presented as sounds and words true to the Katatonia signum. No stars here, just violent rain.’
Dark it will be, but deliciously so. Cobra The Impaler are up in support.
Wednesday 13 wraps up his UK tour at the venue (Nov 10) with a set dedicated to Murderdolls material, and support coming from Hardcore Superstar
Chicago’s heavy rock mob Soil are coming to town (Nov 17) with a show that is guaranteed to give you all the Saturday night feels, but on a Sunday.
Formed back in the late 1990s, the survivors have switched up personnel and navigated a changing industry to deliver a catalogue of albums which have accrued collective sales in excess of two million. Joining artists like Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie on early year tours pushed them before arena sized crowds, which many a band will tell you is a nice place to be.
Aside from their catalogue of own material, in 2022 the band issued the 11 track opus Play It Forward, with their take on material by artists including Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, White Zombie, The Ramones and Prong. Worth tipping your ear to, if you’ve not already.
The All Scars Set road crawl will also feature (hed) p.e, Nonpoint and The Union Underground.
It’s an early starter too – with doors at 6pm and a 10.30pm curfew.
There’s no maybe about it, tickets to see Definitely Oasis (Nov 22) are a heck of a lot cheaper than those reunion shows to see the Gallagher brothers, which was a real lesson in industry gluttony and the dark side of music.
You’ll still get all of the hits, but with none of the farce – and you’ll get to see The Complete Stones Roses in action. ‘Time Flies... 1994-2009’ are yours for £20.
Ska royalty arrives with Bad Manners (Nov 29), the Buster Bloodvessel fronted good time 2-Tone titans. Tongues out for the ladies! Tickets are selling fast for this.
Hugh Cornwell (Nov 30) walked away from The Stranglers in 1990, but he left behind a magnificent body of work; it was Cornwell who was responsible for penning and delivering numbers including Peaches, No More Heroes, Always The Sun and the incomparable, Golden Brown
Since then, he has recorded a mass of music solo, the most recent delivered in 2022, Moments of Madness EXTC – featuring XTC drummer Terry Chambers – will open up the bash, taking listeners back through their own catalogue of class; from Senses Working Overtime to Making Plans for Nigel > For tickets visit theroadmender.com

‘All things happen for a reason...’
Raging Speedhorn have announced a brace of dates to welcome in their new album, Nightwolf, and SBD Promotions have bagged one of them. The Corby founded band will be live at The Black Prince in Northampton on November 1. Vocalist Dan Cook talked Pulse’s Sammy Jones through the latest...
“It’s gonna be good to get back to Northampton again, it’s close to the birthplace of Speedhorn, and not far from where a lot of the creation happens and where the last three albums have been recorded, so it always feels familiar – even for the members from the other end of the country,” Dan said, “It seems the band will always be drawn back to near its roots and it will be great to see lots of old faces from the early days.
“It’s one of two small shows we’ve chosen to kick the new album campaign off and what better place to have one of the pre-release parties to unleash album number seven?”
The British metal saviours’ sixth studio elpee, Hard to Kill, was a fiery fuelled release that saw them back to their brutal best. Nightwolf has been around for a while now though, awaiting its big reveal.
“It’s possibly been three years in the making, and recorded more than a year and a half ago. We started writing during Covid – there wasn’t much else we could do; as we know, gigs were on the back burner because of the pandemic. But the energy was higher than ever in the band and the need to make noise was very apparent between us all.”
As soon as restrictions were lifted, the guys convened to the rehearsal room, and the album was recorded at the start of 2023 at Kettering’s Parlour Studios, the band reconnecting with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, At The Gates, The Wildhearts) to get the job done.
“He just gets us and the working relationship is nothing short of awesome,” Dan said, “He’s very involved in all parts and not afraid to give his opinion and to be honest he’s probably one of the few people we actually listen to.”
The plan was to issue the disc independently, but with industry ears turned their way, the buzz built and a deal was inked with Spinefarm Records, which sees the lads now sitting on a roster which includes Black Label Society, Creeper and Electric Wizard. Nice company to be in.
“Although frustrating not getting the record out sooner, it’s definitely been worth the wait for us,” Dan realises, “All things happen for a reason, as they say.”
There’s an avid fan base waiting for the album to drop – what can they expect?
“It is definitely a huge progression, due to the current line-up, but 100% still Speedhorn.
“The artwork is off the scale and we’ve got some really great people working with us now. We can’t wait to unleash it on the world.”

What’s on the setlist?
Dan talked us through five songs that should be aired at The Black Prince date...
Motorhead
It’s very rare we don’t include this banger and it’s quite often the opener (or early on in the set). Down and dirty, heavy rock and roll. It just brings a certain energy to the hungry onlookers. Gets everyone going.
Doom Machine
Probably one of the tracks we are most proud of writing. When the first DUH DUH kicks in followed by the solo guitar lick you can just feel the power building in the venue. The song just builds and builds, great to play.
Redweed
This is one we often have in the set, cause it’s just awesome, and I think one of the more stand out tracks from the debut album, released way back in 2000. It hits like a hammer in the face from the onset and ends with the head bang party riff nobody stands still to.
Scraping the Resin
If we want to guarantee a circle pit, or general carnage, then this is the track to add in. Full on from beginning to end and one of the more fun ones for us to play and watch the crowd go wild to from our vantage point.
Nightwolf
The title track of the forthcoming album and one we’ve had in the set since our European Tour with our bros in Skindred. We love playing this one. It’s got a heavy, stomping groove and the crowds respond accordingly. Still trying to work out how they all seem to sing along and it ain’t been released yet. Just seems like it’s always been there!

SUDOKU PUZZLE
HARD MAN
Given the title this month, the name I am looking for is:
Lenny McLean Who dat?
Lenny was the chap who played the character of Barry the Baptist in the 1998 film, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Capable of delivering a foul-mouthed tirade, he certainly looked and sounded the part. But then, that is what acting is about. Sir Ben Kingsley played a rather nasty chap, Don Logan, who had an incredible potty-mouth in the 2000 film, Sexy Beast. Yes, that Sir Ben Kingsley – the actor who played Gandhi in the 1982 film, er, Gandhi, and the character Itzhak Stern in the 1993 film, Schindler’s List
However, Lenny McLean had more claim to the title than mere actors. He was an English unlicensed boxer, bouncer, bodyguard, and businessman. As well as being an unlicensed boxer, McLean was an enforcer in London’s criminal underworld. If you failed to fulfil an agreement with a shady business associate, then you might have faced being ‘visited’ by Mr McLean to possibly ‘collect’ or seek to ‘persuade’ you to conform to the relevant terms of an agreement.
As a feared figure, he associated with infamous criminals such as the Kray twins, Ronnie Biggs and Charles Bronson (not the actor but the Luton-born thug, Michael Gordon Peterson). When he was four, he lost his father, and his then mother married a chap called Jim Irwin, who was a persistent petty criminal. He was also an alcoholic who thrashed him and his infant brother Raymond. Finally,
McLean’s great-uncle Jimmy Spinks, a local gangster, badly beat Irwin, nearly killing him, and threatened to cut his throat should he ever need to ‘speak’ with him again. McLean looked up to his great-uncle thereafter.
He was joint owner of a pub in the East End of London with Charlie Kray, elder brother of the Kray twins. McLean certainly mixed with a crowd of a certain repute and doing so he developed that fearsome reputation, backed as it was by being, 6’3” and more than 20st with a terrifying tendency to pummel and tramp rather than punch and jab.
Perhaps an unkind observation? Might Mr McLean wish to meet with me and ‘discuss’ my words? Unlikely as he succumbed to cancer in July 1998, aged only 49, just ahead of the release of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Such is the world of words compared to that of hard knocks, the dead cannot be slandered, libelled or generally upset.
Dark humour aside – a deeper reading of the life of Lenny McLean cannot do anything other than confirm his right to be labelled as Britain’s Hard Man, during his lifetime, and it was a genius selection, on the part of Guy Ritchie, when McLean was cast as Barry the Baptist.
Many might wish to dispute such a label, but I know for certain that I wouldn’t have wanted to meet him down a dark alley, even during any of his later years. But then, I’m barely taller than Tom Cruise.

What the Bardy hell is happening at The Royal?!
Actors behaving badly, smart health advice, a poignant war exploration, a peek into Crimbo and more – Sammy Jones walks you through the month ahead in theatre-land...
Super smart and funny in equal measure, Dom Joly gifted us with the smash-hit prankster show Trigger Happy TV. What a joy that was. He’s also cheered up our screens and stages appearing on everything from I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Celebrity Hunted, through to The Rocky Horror Show
Then there’s his work as a director, producer and celebrated author. Oh, and he’s made videos for artists including Blur and Ian Brown, and is a columnist who has penned for nigh on all the major national titles.
For his most recent book, Dom travelled the globe looking into some of the strangest conspiracy theories out there, and now he’s coming to the ‘fampton (Nov 3, Royal) as part of The Conspiracy tour, to tell us what he thinks.
He’ll be sharing the stage with conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote to defend the alternative view. Whether you be a cynic, believer or undecided, you’ll get plenty to tickle the brain matter from a night in the company of these two.
“Expect the unexpected, verbal reworks, public protests, unexpected knowledge and a lot of laughs...” Dom teases.
During the First World War, more than one million British Empire soldiers lost their lives – even today, half remain resting in unmarked graves.
Now John Nichol, former RAF Tornado Navigator and Gulf War POW, has embarked on a poignant journey to uncover the emotional tale of the Unknown Warrior (Nov 4, Royal), famously interred in Westminster Abbey.
Using evocative visuals and a stirring landscape, this production will take you back to that tumultuous era, presenting a personal journey of discovery and remembrance.
A reminder that Dr Louise Newson (Nov 5, Royal) will replace fiction with fact when she presents Hormones & Menopause, The Great Debate. For much more on that, take another look at September’s edition of Pulse, which carried our interview with her.
Not sure what on earth the Bard would make of it, but one would hope he would giggle just the same as other audience members who check in for Sh!t-faced Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Nov 6 & 7, Royal).
The collective wants to remind you that life is brighter when you are being stupid, and they do it by putting forward a cast member to get spiffingly splifficated before attempting to perform. For real.
‘Think drunken donkeys, fandangled fairies and mullered mechanicals...’ and you’ll be on the money.
A new story inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic gothic novel Frankenstein follows (Nov 12-16), and this electrifying reimagining of the enduring horror story takes the same name. Spines will tingle. And the rest!
We’ve held back as long as we can, but the C-word can’t be swerved any longer, with two festive shows upcoming: So This Is Christmas (Nov 19, Derngate) will blend
comedy sketches and a plentiful supply of seasonal songs, and FairyTale of New York (Nov 20) returns with another Irish-inspired festive concert.
It is, say those responsible, ‘... like a St Patrick’s Day Party, on Christmas Day!’ Rock n roll legend Rick Black hasn’t had a hit for years and he’s broke. Flavour of the Times - The new moon in Scorpio on 1st November brings an intense, mystical vibe. Traditionally, Halloween’s pagan roots, which focused on honouring the dead, were repurposed by Christianity into All Hallows Day. Yet, pagan elements remain strong, especially now. Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival, marks winter’s start and a time when the veil between worlds thins, allowing spirits to cross over. Today, it’s all about zombies! But we still reflect on our earthly existence’s deeper meanings.
SCORPIO
October 24 – November 22

Arm yourself to defeat inner demons, and venture into the recesses of your passion. There, you’ll discover what truly drives you.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 – December 22
This may not be the month for grand adventures, Sagittarius, but it’s perfect for planning them. Reflect on where your passion leads and what horizons you want to expand. Now’s the time to explore new knowledge and delve into what fascinates you—perhaps even the mysteries of ancient civilisations?
CAPRICORN
December 23 – January 20
Pluto exits your sign this month, not to return until 2255. Since 2008, you’ve gained maturity, responsibility, and control. Now, reflect—what have you truly learned? Ready or not, it’s time to move on from this transformative phase. Even if you’re hesitant, trust that you’ve grown stronger through it all.
AQUARIUS
January 21 – February 19

Struggling with health issues, Pisces? That’s Saturn in your sign! But the good news is, things are shifting. The stability you’ve been craving is starting to appear, offering much-needed support. Mars moves into Leo, leaving behind its emotional Cancer phase. Early in the month, unresolved family matters may resurface, leaving you feeling torn or wounded. While it won’t resolve quickly, trust that you’ll emerge stronger. This emotional turbulence is temporary, so be patient as you navigate these feelings.
TAURUS
April 21 – May 21
This new moon in Scorpio brings an intensity to daily events, which you may find unsettling. Partners could disrupt your plans, and sticking to what you know might worsen things. Instead, take the time to understand the root of the issue. By digging deeper, you’ll find a more effective way forward.
GEMINI
May 22 – June 21
You may be struggling with extravagance, feeling the need for rescue. The real issue is your growing dependence on others for motivation and direction, leaving you unsure of your own strength. The key lesson here is moderation and finding contentment in what you’ve achieved through your own efforts. Trust yourself more.
You are bound to be affected personally by some, if not all, of the massive changes taking place this year. Not everyone will be equally affected on a personal level, but you will certainly feel it if you are an Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, or Taurus.

CANCER
June 22 – July 23
The month starts with a powerful Mars-Pluto opposition, stirring intense emotions and a protective instinct. While your feelings may cloud your actions, they can also guide you with compassion. As Mars moves into Leo, the intensity eases, but unresolved issues may return unless addressed now. Trust your intuition to take meaningful action.
LEO
July 24 – August 23
Your energy levels improve around the 5th after a sluggish, emotional start. While you’ll feel more energised, don’t dismiss the underlying emotional intensity. It comes from a deep place within you and deserves serious attention. By addressing it, you’ll better understand yourself and move forward with clarity and purpose.
VIRGO
August 24 – September 23
Virgo, you may feel out of place this month as the new moon’s intensity disrupts your practical nature. Things start to improve after Saturn changes direction on the 17th, allowing you to regain order. However, don’t expect immediate results—tangible progress may not come until the new year or even springtime.

September 24 – October 23
