he success of the England Lionesses at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 championships gripped the nation and highlighted the progress in the women’s game in recent years. Their success in bring home a major championship for the first time since 1966 has highlighted how ffar the women’s game has developed and emphasised the importance of equality and diversity in sport and wider society.

“Now I am here and want to help people like me. Hopefully people like me show that it is possible to fight for equality together.”

Ms Griese’s role at VW includes dealing with coming out at the workplace, the impact and development of networks and the importance of role models. One role model is British exprofessional swimmer Michael Gunning. “At the start of my career, there were many who told me that black people could not swim. I should try athletics instead,” he says. “It took a long time for me to be able to proudly say that I am a swimmer. However, I did not want to be in the headlines as ‘the gay, black swimmer’.

Stadium MK hosted three group games and the semi-final between Germany and France and vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen, official mobility partner of the tournament, took the opportunity to host a panel discussion on the topic of Equality and Diversity in and through Sport at its UK headquarters in Milton Keynes. Among those attending were former German international footballers Nadine Keßler and Bastian Schweinsteiger, once of former Bayern Munich and Manchester Utd. Ms Keßler, 2014 FIFA World Player of the Year, is now UEFA ambassador for the development of women’s football. “We are investing a lot in football for women and what we are seeing here at the EURO in England is on a different level when it comes to media interest and spectators.” However, the next step is about building a sustainable basis. “It is not easy to play a sport when you are constantly faced with prejudices and comparisons. You have to accept that, as a female footballer, you do not get everything handed to you on a silver platter and sometimes have to be louder to make your opinion heard. We are aware of our task and are not only looking at the sporting results but also our mission to battle for equality.”

T

Corinna Griese is a member of the LGBTIQ* and friends network #WeDriveProud at Volkswagen and chief executive of the football department at Bundesliga 2 club Eintracht Braunschweig. Women in football are role models, she says. “When it comes to equality and tolerance, female football players are well ahead of the men. Women, including those in the national team, have come out and many are even married to their partners.”

‘It is possible to fight for equality together’

The response to 17-year-old footballer Jake Daniels, who plays for Championship side Blackpool and who came out in public in May, has been overwhelmingly positive. “Young players need support and a safe environment in order to grow and develop self-confidence,” says Ms Griese. “The problem is often not the players but rather the managers and consultants, who advise against coming out.” Adds Mr Gunning: “It was unbelievable to see how Jake took this responsibility. If I had had somebody I could look up to when I was young, my life would have been so much easier.” Volkswagen highlighted existing inequalities in football with a campaign in the run-up to the 2022 UEFA Women’s EURO tournament. At its heart was the provocative hashtag #NotWomensFootball “The campaign is fantastic and an important symbol for equality,” says Ms Keßler. “We are talking about the same sport, whether it is being played by men or women. It is important to stop generalising football for women and equal rights and lumping them together. They are not the same thing.”

“It shows the power of partnership. Supporting the Women’s team is also empowering the SET to invest in developing Milton Keynes as a community. Businesses can be at the starting point of the journey and that is now - if they do not get involved, they may miss the train. It is already in the station and ready to depart.”

“The Lionesses’ win is just the beginning of unlocking so much potential,” Cllr Marland said. “We are immensely proud that Leah is from Milton Keynes and I think it would be totally appropriate that the very first person to be given the Freedom of the New City of Milton Keynes is the first woman to lead a national side to international honours.” n Milton Keynes Museum is collating a history of local women’s football. The project team has interviewed former Chiltern Valley Ladies players from the 1960s and 1970s, some of whom travelled to Mexico in 1971 to play in an unofficial Women’s World Cup as an England team. Ex-players for MK Wanderers and Aylesbury Ladies and current players for MK United have been interviewed and a wealth of information on local teams in the 1930s has come to light.“There is an important history of women’s football in the area and we would like to more comprehensively understand and represent the story,” said museum director Bill Griffiths. He has appealed for medals, football kits, programmes, match tickets and trophies.

E ngland women’s captain Leah Williamson, who was born and brought up in Newport Pagnell, is to receive the Freedom of the New City of Milton Keynes in recognition of her leadership of the Lionesses to EURO 2022 glory. Milton Keynes Council has begun the process of bestowing the award on the 25-year-old, who plays for Arsenal in the Women’s Super League. “I hope the win will have a lasting impact on women’s sport and I am sure it has both inspired a new generation of women and girls to take part in whatever their chosen sport is, as well as changing the attitude of many others to women’s sport in general,” said council leader Cllr Pete Marland.MiltonKeynes’ bid to be a host city for the tournament included a pledge to increase the number of girls playing the game and double the number of trained women’s coaches in the city.

Business can put its mark on growth of football

“What the Lionesses have done for women’s football and for football generally has been incredible,” says Jack Sharp, MK Dons SET’s head of football and performance under whose remit the women’s section of the club falls. “Now we are looking for organisations that want to help to grow women’s football. Business has a pivotal and critical role and can put its mark on the development of something that is going to be huge. That is really exciting for any organisation.”Supportbegins from as little as £35 for a season ticket to all home games, 11 of which will be played at Stadium MK. Sponsorship of a player means an investment of £200 + VAT, £50 of which goes straight to the sponsored player to assist with her expenses.

Leah in line for Freedom of the City

The long-term ambition is promotion to the WSL Championship but that would involve a compulsory move to become a professional club. The cost: at least £650,000 per year, likely up to £1 million, says Jack. The current recruitment model for players revolves around the club finding and developing its own talent alongside the Dons loaning players from higher up the football pyramid to give them game time as they develop their professional careers. The Dons already has strong links with Arsenal, Birmingham and Leicester City ladies but to develop its own talent to compete in higher divisions means a focus on the girls academy - another area where business support will be vital, says Jack. “It is a big deal and it will allow us to do it on our own. To keep the girls academy producing local Milton Keynes talent, we need a business prepared to be a major sponsor.” His call to businesses is to follow the example of Marshall Amplification and Brioche Pasquier and support the club so that the legacy of the Lionesses’ EURO 2022 success is strong and long-lasting.

Stadium MK also had its days in the EURO 2022 spotlight, hosting three group games and the semi-final in which Germany defeated France 1-0. MK Dons currently runs teams from teenage via under-19 and under-23 to the club’s first team. There are 270 girls registered with the club. Before EURO 2022, there was minimal interest from businesses in supporting the women’s teams. Only Marshall Amplification, based round the corner from Stadium MK, were supporting the team through a shirt sponsorship deal for the past three years, and a handful of businesses providing player sponsorship. Since July 31, however, the Dons have fielded a dozen enquiries from businesses interested in being associated with the club through player and match sponsorship. Food manufacturer Brioche Pasquier is the main sponsor of the MK Dons Sport & Education Trust, of which the women’s section is part. The SET delivers programmes around Milton Keynes and beyond encouraging healthy active lifestyles among young people and hosts football in the city’s schools in a bid to help young people channel their talent and to make good life choices.

Success for the Lionesses in winning the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament and bringing back a major international trophy to these shores for the first time since 1966 can be a springboard for women’s football in Milton Keynes. The business community has a key role to play in backing development of the game locally, with interest in sponsorship opportunities at MK Dons Women growing as the club looks to capitalise on the spike in interest after England’s 2-1 triumph over Germany at Wembley. The profile of the women’s game has soared since that heady evening on July 31 and MK Dons have wasted little time in calling on the city’s business community to “join the train” as the club looks to move from Tier 3 of the women’s game to the WSL Championship.

The company has been supplying renewable energy equipment into the UK for over a decade, and later this year plans to launch electric vehicle chargers as part of its portfolio. “So having adequate space to further grow into is of paramount importance, while keeping the city centre location close to the train station,” Mr LycettSungrowsaid.has taken a ten-year lease on 3,821 sq ft of space at Moorgate House. The Supreme Court noted that this method does not use a week’s pay as required by the regulations and that there is nothing in the regulations preventing a partyear worker from being treated more favourably for holiday entitlement purposes. This decision confirms that employers should not use the percentage method to calculate paid leave entitlements of part-year workers. Doing so is likely to cause a shortfall in paid holiday entitlement and will expose employers to claims for unauthorised deduction from wages and breach of the regulations. Employees can usually claims shortfalls in holiday pay going back two years and therefore the liability may not be insignificant, depending on the number of staff affected. Instead, employers should adopt the calendar week method and ensure that part-year workers receive a full 5.6 weeks of leave paid by reference to their average weekly earnings across the previous 52 weeks, excluding weeks not actually worked. Where a part-year worker has worked for their employer for less than 52 weeks, their total worked weeks should be used instead. However, the judgment confirms that employers are still able to require workers to take their leave at specific times, such as during school holidays or seasonal industry closures. This decision is likely to present problems for employers who engage term-time or casual staff. The percentage method referred to above is a common way to calculate holiday for such staff because it is easy to use. Calculating holidays for term-time or casual staff in accordance with the Brazel judgment will be more complex and time-consuming and the employer will need to give careful thought as to how to implement any necessary changes. Staff who deal with calculation of holiday entitlement and pay will likely need further training to get it right. This decision applies where there is an ongoing contract between periods of work. Employers may consider whether part-year workers actually need to be employed under continuous contracts. In some cases, a shorter fixed-term contract may suffice.

As is common with employees working variable hours, the Harpur Trust paid Mrs Brazel for her leave using the percentage method. This involved counting the hours that Mrs Brazel worked in the previous term, calculating 12.07 per cent of this figure and paying her for that number of hours at her usual hourly rate. This is because 5.6 weeks is 12.07pc of 46.4 weeks (the whole 52-week year minus the 5.6-week annual leave entitlement).TheHarpur Trust argued that it was fair to calculate Mrs Brazel’s paid leave entitlement in this way as it reflected the amount of work that she actually performed. Mrs Brazel contended that the percentage method led to her receiving less holiday pay than she was entitled to and argued that the Harpur Trust should have used the calendar week method. This involves calculating how many hours she worked in her previous 12 weeks of employment, multiplied by her hourly rate and divided by 12 to calculate a week’s pay. This figure is multiplied by the period of leave up to the full 5.6 weeks per year. This method only took account of the weeks that she worked and would have resulted in Mrs Brazel receiving paid holiday entitlement of approximately 17.5pc rather than 12.07pc. The Supreme Court agreed with Mrs Brazel that the Harpur Trust should have adopted the calendar week method when calculating her paid leave. They recognised this would put Mrs Brazel in a more favourable position than her full-time colleagues as the pay that she received for leave would be a higher percentage of her annual salary than a worker who works throughout the year.

The percentage method is contrary to the regulations, the court said, and is therefore an unlawful way of calculating paid leave entitlement, even though this may appear to be a fairer way to proceed.

businessKeepinghillierhopkins.co.uk020CharteredAccountantsandTaxAdvisersyourmoving he Supreme Court has handed down an important judgment in the long-running case of Harpur Trust v Brazel concerning the amount of paid leave that a part-year worker is entitled to. A part-year worker is a worker employed under a permanent contract but works for varying hours each week and for irregular weeks through the year. This would include term-time workers and individuals employed under zero hours or casual contracts. Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, all workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid leave per year. For workers with variable hours each week of leave should be paid by reference to their average weekly earnings across the previous 52 weeks that they worked for their employer (the reference period). The reference period should disregard any weeks where work was not performed, going back up to 104 weeks to obtain a sufficient number of weeks to include in the reference period. The 52-week reference period came into force in April 2020. Prior to this, the reference period was 12 weeks. Mrs Brazel worked as a visiting music teacher at a school run by the Harpur Trust. She was employed under a permanent zero hours contract which required her to work when needed during term-time and not during the school holidays.

There are different methods for calculating the value of a business, which can be dependent on the type of business or sector you are in. For example, in the IFA and accountancy sectors, the valuation is based on a multiple of their fee income/turnover, but profitability will still play a part in determining the multiple.

It is inevitable that one day you will need (and want) to step away from the business you’ve built, but many business owners do not put the same time and effort into planning for their exit as they do for day-to-day operations and growth strategy. Maybe this is because it’s easier to prioritise short-term projects, hard to imagine not being a part of the business’ future, or simply thinking that exiting a business is easy. What exit options do I have available?

Think about how you currently monitor your financial performance and if perspective buyers will be able to understand and interpret your current reporting methods. It is good practice to whittle your financial performance metrics down into a handful of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which are recorded and analysed monthly. As board members of SEMLEP, we work hard to ensure that this region has a powerful base of skills that can manage innovation, innovate, and exploit innovation effectively. We have a great team focused specifically on skills with a depth of experience across universities, industrial training, and broader life learning. They produce the excellent Skills Strategy for the region.

Investing in innovationdoes it really unlock prosperity?

Inward Investment Armed with that, and powerfully so, SEMLEP can reach out across the Economic Development Officers in local authorities to coordinate and facilitate inward investment, whether from foreign or national sources. Precisely because the region has such deep and rich advantages, it has a long history of capturing significant amounts of inward investment and directing it towards the innovation challenges that will really matter; both for SEMLEP area, and for the United Kingdom as a whole. Is it all worth it? Investment can create additional innovation if it is put in the right place with the right skills and the right people and the right sector. That innovation can drive financial and social gain that compounds and grows dramatically if it is managed and nurtured correctly. Relatively small investments, and relatively small changes in can have substantial benefits in the future. So, while the short answer is “Yes”, the long answer is “Yes, but only if a lot of dedicated people put a lot of time and effort into managing the detail carefully”. And that, I think, is part of why volunteering for SEMLEP has been so amazingly rewarding for me, and each and every one on the SEMLEP board.

The majority-accepted view is that there is a strong correlation with some known causation that indicates that increased investment in innovation leads to higher national prosperity in the medium to long term. The UK government finds that each £1 of investment in innovation generates a 20% rate of return. This is within the bounds of OCED, World Bank and EU studies over decades.Theyall find that rates of return to private investment in innovation of 0% to 60%, with most firms seeing 20% to 30%, and national prosperity returns to public sector investment are in the range of 0% to 100% with most being in the band of 30% to 50% because of the amplification and spillover effects of the rest of economy. Innovation activity may be a relatively small proportion of the economic and social activity in the United Kingdom but it has a disproportionately fast-growing effect on everything around it. Which is why we pay it so much attention and try to nurture the fragile little sparks into useful flames. By the magic of compound growth, every year builds upon the year before. Over 20 years, a 20% rate of return turns £1 million into £32 million, and a 50% rate of return creates £2.2 billion. Clearly, we are highly motivated to ensure we target the top end of that range of returns.

In the long run, the evidence is overwhelmingly that innovation generates social and national good. In the short to medium term, compromises need to be made. Managing that is the thing that we like to call politics.

Feature by DAVID BAILEY non-executive Board Director, SEMLEP MUCH is made of the need for the UK to invest in innovation to drive prosperity. It’s a straightforward message and a beguilingly easy solution to sell at a time when the UK is facing severe pressures on currency, supply chains, workforce, skills, and access to markets. It’s been a plank of government policies since the 1970s and 1980s as a driver to reverse a long period of relative UK economic decline against our international neighbours. Can innovation continue as a catalyst to enable the UK to prosper? If it might, is investment in more innovation beneficial?Iwon’tattempt to review 100 years of econometrics and national policy in a short article. I will get straight to the point: investing in innovation DOES unlock national prosperity. Yes, it does… ‘Think tanks’ of various political colours and ideologies have produced lengthy papers on innovation for prosperity. Some that come quickly to mind are the OECD 2007 Innovation, Growth and Equity: The Equation for Prosperity, Brooking Institute 2011 Technology and the Innovation Economy, the National Institute for Economic Review 2013 Investing for Prosperity: Skills, Infrastructure and Innovation, CIFAR 2019 Innovation, Equity & The Future of Prosperity and NEISR 2021 From ideas to growth

Many of the examples above have been given in financial terms, but the effects go much wider. Innovation can change our health, our journey to work, the way we spend our leisure time, how we process waste, how we get water, what pollution we generate, and how we are educated. What SEMLEP does with this

Importantly, all that information enables SEMLEP, together with our partners locally and nationally from the public and private sector, to focus effort on unlocking innovation in areas and sectors that have proven abilities to deliver returns locally: n High-performance technology n Future of mobility n Zero carbon future n Manufacturing and advanced technology n Logistics and supply chain n Creative and cultural industries n Aerospace and space technology

It requires that the region, and the nation, has the skills, management, built environment, data collection, systems of releasing value, and ways of assigning investment to valuable propositions, all functioning seamlessly and without friction. Benefits are not distributed evenly The truth of innovation is that before it generates prosperity, it generates disruption. It is true that jobs may be lost when a more efficient process is discovered, It is true that some regions benefit more than others from the introduction of new technologies. It is true that different demographics benefit at different times and in different ways from the spread of prosperity.

…but not always ...and not without help It’s a big, complex, and confusing area of study and it is what is under the headlines that really matters. Let’s look at a few of the most important areas: Investment alone does not automatically lead to innovation Common sense, backed up by multiple studies, suggest that merely throwing money at a problem will not solve it. Investment yields higher returns in areas where there are positive pre-existing conditions.Youalways get more back in social and financial terms where you already have universities, connectivity, bandwidth, a reasonably dense built environment, and a concentration of industries that have already recognised the need to innovate. Fortunately, the Oxford-Cambridge Arc, and the Southeast Midlands region is blessed with those factors. Innovation does not happen without help Innovation is a learned skill. It is not the same as invention. It is not the same as random creativity. It is a focused collaborative process over many years which seeks out and identifies opportunities, creates concepts that can be developed, validates those concepts against the real world, develops working solutions for those concepts, and then deploys those working solutions in profitable manners.

It is not all about money

David Bailey is an expert in structuring and strategy. “I find the pathways and components of unexpected solutions to enable founders, investors, and property owners to fix the hardest of problems,” he says. “I help them to unblock and accelerate growth; unlock and realise value rapidly; and invest wisely for maximum gain.” He is a private sector board director of SEMLEP and a member of Northampton Enterprise Zone, Luton Airport Enterprise Zone, the Finance Risk and Advisory Committee and Inward Investment Group.

A core team creates the evidence base from which the Regional Economic Plan emerges by way of broad and deep studies from existing reports and by the regular Business Survey across the region. When the team is faced with sudden changes in the economic environment, as we just had from Brexit and Covid, it is able to pivot and produce Recovery Strategies as well.

‘Troublesome autumn’ looms for companies in distress, warns expert Businesses in the retail, health and education sectors are bearing the brunt of ongoing financial hardship, says new research.Morethan 2,700 businesses in Milton Keynes were in “significant” financial distress during the second quarter of 2022, according to figures from corporate restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor’s Red Flag Alert, which monitors the financial health of British companies. The total of 2,789 represents a one per cent increase on the previous quarter but remains 12pc down on the same period last year. Retail sector businesses in trouble rose by 10pc, while health and education increased by 8pc. “Companies were hoping for an economic boom after the pandemic,” said Julie Palmer, Begbies Traynor’s partner in Milton Keynes. “But that has simply fizzled out as a combination of economic issues have taken their toll, reducing both business and consumer confidence. Indeed, rising insolvency rates, combined with our own anecdotal evidence from speaking to the directors of distressed companies, highlight the impact of rising costs on Nationally, businesses.”theRed Flag Alert recorded almost 582,500 businesses in significant distress, hit by rising inflation, higher labour, material and energy prices and faltering consumer and business confidence. Evidence comes in the form of County Court Judgement data, which some consider an early warning sign of future insolvency. CCJs were up by 5pc to 46,235 as creditors tried to recover debts. Just over 59,000 CJs in total were made in 2021 and Begbies Traynor says this year’s figures to date reflect the backlog in the courts being cleared and debts are pursued. Ms Palmer said: “Many are fighting on but the environment is only going to get worse, not better, at least until next year. I fear it will be a troublesome autumn as businesses which have struggled for so long are finally overwhelmed. It is so important that businesses facing financial difficulties should seek professional advice to fully understand the options available.”

ne of the last independent pressed and sheet metal component manufacturers and die casters in the UK has gone into administration. Broadways Stampings and its sister company Dyson Diecastings have succumbed to the challenging environment facing the UK’s automotive supply chain. Ryan Grant and Chris Pole, from Interpath Advisory, have been appointed joint administrators. The companies continue to trade at their factories on the Denbigh industrial estate in Bletchley while the administrators seek buyers for the businesses and their assets.

Business Leaders Partnership

Participation in the awards gives you a wonderful opportunity to spend the night among some of the city’s business elite and, regardless of winning, you will have the chance to network with some of the most talented business owners and individuals that this city has to offer. Win… and the sky’s the limit. In addition to the usual qualities that they look for, the judges will also be looking for those who not only celebrate diversity but who embrace it as part of their day-to-day activity. We want to hear from a wide spectrum of great businesses so that we can celebrate what makes you who you are. So please do not be one of the city’s best kept secrets. Now is the time for you to shout about who you are and what makes you great. Who knows where it may lead? I know very well the strength, tenacity, and brilliance of this city and I cannot wait to see the high standard of entries that we will undoubtedly receive, proving once again why Milton Keynes is the best city in the UK.

Just a few short months ago, I stood in front of a packed ballroom at Stadium:MK and pledged that next year’s Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards would be the biggest and best yet. Already we are several steps closer to achieving that ambition.Forme as chair of the Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership, September 8 will be a big day as we host the launch event for MKBAA 2023. It is also be the date that entries open so that people can begin to call out the brilliant achievements in businesses around the city. Already, we have selected our theme for MKBAA 2023: Celebrating Diversity. Milton Keynes is full of fantastically diverse communities and businesses and we feel that many workplaces are cultivating a thriving culture for people from all backgrounds. Inclusivity should run through the heart of every business and we look forward to celebrating that at our next awards. As I stood on that stage in March, not only did I encourage our sponsors to once again get involved but I also implored others to do so. I promised to make the forthcoming awards the best yet but that can only be done with the support of some of Milton Keynes’ best and most prominent businesses. I am proud to say we have already secured repeat sponsorship from some of 2022’s sponsors, with headline sponsors Milton Keynes Council and The Open University and category sponsors DBFB and Integral Powertrain all wanting to go again. And we have many more with whom we are currently negotiating. But there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved and, as any of our sponsors will tell you, sponsorship presents your company with a great opportunity to become known by the very best and brightest businesses in our fabulous city. This year’s event will be a landmark as it will be the first to be held since Milton Keynes officially gained city status. So there has never been a better time to be noticed in one of the most thriving and fastest-growing cities in the country. Now is the time to shout about your achievements.

MKBLP chair Nicholas Mann on stage at the Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards 2022

Inclusivity should run through the heart of every business

Diversity is thriving in workplaces throughout Milton Keynes and is the theme of the MK Business Achievement Awards 2023, which launch this month. Nicholas Mann, chair of the awards organisers, looks ahead

The most pressing questions are what is happening to the level crossings at Woburn Sands, Fenny Stratford and on the V10 Brickhill Street at Bow Brickhill. When the reopened EWR is fully operational, it is estimated that each crossing will close ten times, for up to a total of 40 minutes, in an Canhour.you begin to even imagine the grief this will cause?

“My amateur observations of the line of route to the east and west of the existing Woburn Sands station suggest that it would be feasible for the line to descend into a cutting east of Bow Brickhill station to a depth by Woburn Sands that would allow Newport/Station Road to form a bridge over the railway without inclines of the gradient that renders a traditional road bridge inappropriate,” Mr Stewart says. “Such an option would actually improve existing traffic flow as there would be no level crossing at all.” This idea is not without merit but would require extensive line closures and vast expense.Sohow is EWR progressing this fullyfunded line? The East West Main Line Partnership Strategic Board held its latest meeting in March The only representative from Milton Keynes was the council’s strategic lead transport planning and policy James Povey. According to the minutes, published in June, the 2021 public consultation report was due to be published in the summer (as I write, it has not). East West Rail Company’s strategy director Will Gallagher recognised this creates some uncertainty. The reason it was taking a time was that the company is genuinely taking into account the feedback which has been received.

Option 3 Build a bridge where the level crossing is. Because of the layout of houses and the Station Hotel pub near the current level crossing, that would be extremely costly and difficult and most probably require a road detour - which brings us back to Option 1- with the loss of allotments and heavy road traffic very near some lovely, expensive homes.

Irecently cast my mind, once more, over that sticky toffee pudding of inadequate foresight and woeful planning that is East West Rail or the Varsity Line as it was once known as it linked Oxford with Cambridge. My latest research reveals that what this pudding desperately needs is a large helping of whipped cream commitment with a dash of maple syrup determination and a big dollop of chopped-nuts decision-making.

01908 275271

MP Iain Stewart pictured, however, has his own ideas for an Option 4. “I have been made aware of a number of residents in houses close to the line who have received communications from EWR about compulsory purchases,” he says. “While I have not seen the correspondence in question, it is creating the impression among some that a decision on the project details has already been made and that this consultation is a ‘going through the motions’ exercise rather than it being a genuine opportunity for local communities to shape the project.” His concept is one where the rail line goes underneath Newport Road and Station Road.

And yet we know that homeowners have been written to, particularly in Woburn Sands where residents are slowly building a head of steam which may, it must be assumed, be released somewhat explosively should EWR continue to make no decision or the wrong ones. There seem to be three options acknowledged by EWR at Woburn Sands. Milton Keynes South MP Iain Stewart, in whose constituency Woburn Sands sits, has a fourth. Option 1 Closing the crossing and building a bypass from Newport Road opposite Cross End Road, running south to reach the Bow Brickhill Road. Traffic would then enter Woburn Sands either via Bow Brickhill Road or via an extension running through the allotments and Edgewick Farm into Hardwick Road over a new bridge. Option 2 Closing the crossings ten times for up to 40 minutes per hour and simply seeing how the residents and users of Woburn Sands can handle it. Once the Varsity Line is reopened, the level crossing will be closed at least 50 per cent of the time and likely even longer once long, heavy and slow freight trains between the nationally important freight ports of Southampton and FelixstoweBritain’s busiest - join the route.

Crossings concerns mean decision time is now, East West Rail

Cllr Michael Headley, representing Bedford Borough Council, voiced his concerns about engagement with residents impacted by the potential alignment, who are living with uncertainty. Local representative groups are restricted to councillors but Mr Gallagher said EWR was examining how it engages with local residents as well as representative groups. He promised an update in due course. I put some queries to Rebecca Griffin, EWR press manager until last monthshe has now moved overseas. “In terms of where we are right now, people living in towns and villages across the potential East West Rail route and their community representatives were extremely generous in their time and expertise during the 2021 Consultation, giving EWR a significantand very welcome - challenge to see how and where we could change and improve East West Rail,” she tells me. EWR had received more than 9,000 responses and, within these, more than 160,000 individual matters were raised. “All of these responses are being reviewed and considered by our expert team. We have a duty to take all of this feedback into real consideration - which takes time - and will publish a report summarising the consultation feedback as well as information on how the feedback has been used to inform plans for the railway once we have completed that work.”Mylatest efforts to get any sort of answers out of EWR were to the question: Is there any update as to a formal response to the 2021 consultation or to any plans for the three problematic level crossings inHeadMK? of communications Hannah Staunton replies: “We have no further update. Is there a specific question you have?”. Indeed I did and I have specific further questions but at time of writing they remain unanswered. Meanwhile everybody seems to be simply whistling in the dark. Cheerio.

A conference and expo focusing on entrepreneurship takes place at Stadium MK this month. The event, which features eight keynote speakers on topics crucial to business success and two networking opportunities, aims to cater for 100 exhibition stands. The goal is to encourage all businesses to meet fellow business owners, forge new relationships, explore business opportunities and to conquer challenges and issues they face in scaling up their business.

Promotion Discover the secrets of entrepreneurialsuccess

Doors open in the ballroom at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Stadium MK, at 10am with the event running until 3pm, with speed networking before and after the event.TheArt of Entrepreneurship is the brainchild of digital marketing specialist Angela McCall pictured, who launched her business in April 2020 after two-plus decades of freelance work, with the goal to help UK B2B service providers embrace digital marketing activities.

The Bow Brickhill crossing, near the headquarters of Red Bull Racing and others at Tilbrook and Caldecotte Park, is the one where formal Milton Keynes Council documents supporting intensive development of both Caldecotte Site C and South Caldecotte - the areas currently being filled with Magna Park-style megawarehouses - claimed that setting aside land for a new bridge over the rail link was not required. A humpback bridge wouldHowever,do. we later learned via a Freedom of Information request that: “No feasibility work for a bridge over the railway was carried out or commissioned by the council”. Effectively this means that the hundreds of lorries a day that will service the new mega-warehouses will be forced on to the A5 and will not be able to use the V10 to seek access to the M1. So let’s see what EWR - where, it seems, absolutely nothing has been decided or committed to or determined - have said about it. “We have sent consultation land plans to landowners who could potentially be affected by our proposals and our dedicated land team are holding remote meetings with landowners to give support, advice and to share information,” an EWR spokeswoman tells me. “No homes are currently subject to a compulsory purchase order at this stage.”

“Many micro limited and small businesses failed to get assistance financially from the government during Covid as we did not qualify for the Bounce Back schemes,” she says. “Business like mine have become known as the ‘Covid excluded’ and this conference aims to help businesses get out of the office, into somewhere where they can connect with other businesses that they might not have crossed paths with before.” Her experiences in the pandemic have led, in collaboration with 21 other businesses in a similar position, producing a business book also entitled The Art of Entrepreneurship chronicling their experiences. The book is due to be published on September 22, three days after the conference on September 19. “Being a ‘Covid Excluded Business’ was branded about in many conversations in the B2B sector,” Angela recalls. “What started out as a small exercise to help bring a community of business owners together has become a beast of Angelaproject.”isamong the eight keynote speakers at the event, discussing topics including sales, business growth, design and other essential business advice and tips. The Art of Entrepreneurship takes place at Stadium MK on September 19, 10am-3pm. Speed networking events take place at 8.30am ahead of the conference opening and after it closes at 3pm. With MK Property as its headline sponsor, The Art of Entrepreneurship expects to welcome more than 1,000 delegates from businesses employing from one to 20 staff and based within an hour’s drive of Milton Keynes.

Meetings venue reports record results outlook Meetings and events are back with a bang, says one of Bedfordshire’s major conference and events venues. Confirmed business is up by almost 50 per cent on pre-pandemic levels for the first half of this year at Wyboston Lakes Resorts. It has delivered a record six months of business for the first half of 2022, despite restrictions around events in January and February following the Omicron outbreak. Business on the books at the six-month point is up by 47pc on 2019 with a solid base already in place for 2023. Bookings remain relatively short lead but the venue is reporting an uplift in demand for long-term bookings and a commitment to securing multi-event deals. Revenue director Christine Gomez said: “This year we have seen meeting agendas evolve and while the meeting content itself is the priority, the social aspect is also very important. The fact we had products in place to cater for this has really paidTheoff.”resort’s sales strategy has focused on specific sectors and the sales team has reported a 75 per cent increase in demand for events when compared with 2019. “We know those sectors we specialise in but we are also clear on what business we do not take and we have moved away from non-core sales lines, such as weddings,” said sales director Richard Smith. When the pandemic hit in 2020, management opted to continue with £3 million worth of planned refurbishments. As a result, average booking value has increased substantially since 2019. “The resort’s commitment to the environment, to investing in the team and our physical assets will keep pushing the costs base up,” said Mr Smith. “Therefore to keep offering our guests the high-quality, value for money and best in class service, our prices will need to reflect this. The focus now is to maintain the margin and we do this by being focused on what business is good for the resort. The resort chose not to furlough

A Purpose Statement Here is a simple way to define your purpose in business. Try filling in the blanks to come up with your Purpose Statement: “My business exists to… by… for the good of….” My business exists to…(insert your core values - why you do what you do) by…(this is what you do, how you help people, what you offer that’s different from others) for the good of…(this is who you’re in business to serve, your ideal customer, the type of person that aligns with your purpose)

Steve Rees, sales and marketing director at Qoob Group, assesses why marketing a business around shared beliefs and causes can build a deeper rapport with its clients.

Authenticity leads to trust, which is the number one attribute upon which longlasting and profitable relationships are built. When you break it down, a profitable relationship built on trust involves: n An alignment of core values and beliefs; n Your expertise and how it adds value to your customer’s life; n The desire you create in them to exchange money for what you offer. Simon Sinek, author and motivational speaker who founded The Optimism Company, makes it clear how we make a difference with our sense of purpose: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what youThisbelieve.”isthe essence of purposedriven marketing. People choose to do business with us because they identify with ‘why’ we do what we do. If we were in business just to make a quick buck people would quickly see through us.We would be here today, gone tomorrow.

Our business exists to provide a truly excellent marketing and communication service by offering help in almost every area of marketing that a business owner or company could need for the good of busy business owners so they can focus on running their business. We will cover that in our next article.

Gary Cutts, Future Flight Challenge director at UK Research and Innovation, said: “Our roadmap sets out how air taxis could be in use in the UK by 2030 but a lot needs to occur for that to happen. By bringing technical developments from across the aviation industry together into one network, and undertaking early demonstration in the real world, the Advanced Mobility Ecosystem Consortium could accelerate the timescale for AAM introduction by years.“This project could revolutionise travel not just in the UK but around the world.”

Cranfield’s role will focus on the vertiport, where aircraft land and take off vertically, the infrastructure for the project, capacity modelling and the optimisation of schedule and resourceProfessormanagement.Antonios Tsourdos, head of the Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems Centre at Cranfield, said: “Cranfield’s cutting-edge expertise in aircraft electrification, airport planning and air traffic management will underpin the operations of this first-of-a-kind ecosystem, making electric flight a reality.”Theallocation of vertiport services on air and landside, including security aspects along the journey and relevant access points at downtown and suburban landing pads, will be critical to AAM. Cranfield researchers will model passenger throughput based on vertiport size and spatial organisation, aircraft size, processing times, business rules and regulatory requirements.

Mark Twain It is understood that we are in business to make a profit, otherwise there would be no business. But the most successful businesses are driven by a sense of purpose and their purpose is what tempers their profit motive. People feel a deeper personal connection to companies with whom they share values and who show a commitment to something they find meaningful. This is the foundation of what experts have begun to call ‘purpose-driven Purpose-drivenmarketing’.marketing is an organisation’s strategy to focus its marketing efforts around shared beliefs or social causes that align with its core values and those of its audience. The goal of purpose-driven marketing is to develop an even deeper rapport with consumers, appealing to their sense of what matters over the long haul. Brands that are driven by a purpose in their marketing gain traction by becoming a part of how consumers desire to see themselves. Marketing is ultimately a conversation about belief and identity, a way of helping people see themselves in the brands they patronise. But what do we mean by ‘purpose’? In our personal lives, we might define our purpose as the belief that our life matters and that we make a difference, a sense of being guided by meaningful values and goals. In a business context, we could expand this to say that purpose is the intersection of:

Who in business do you respect the most? After the Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards this year, Wayne Hemingway pictured. He built the Red Or Dead fashion brand into a global business. From the moment he started his presentation, I was completely engaged. I love his business ethos.

Q&A

FOOD French food because the dishes sound as beautiful as they taste.

BOOK Nineteen Eight Four. George Orwell. Because of his awareness of social injustice and outspoken support of democracy. FILM Erin Brockovich, who helped win the largest settlement ever paid for a direct-action lawsuit. I loved Julia Roberts’ character’s passion and determination to get a result for what was right. TV PROGRAMME Antiques Roadshow. I am obsessed with collecting antiques. RESTAURANT Locally Paris House in Woburn. Amazing food, wonderful setting. DESTINATION I have travelled the world, but Istanbul was the most wonderfully exotic and dynamic city. It’s a ‘must visit’. What was your first job? My first Saturday job was helping my Dad on his bread round, getting up early to deliver bread to the villages in and around Buckingham. From the age of 13 I worked in a shoe shop, hairdressers, in a camping store. There were summer jobs, in the wages department of Scot Meats in Bletchley and serving at the Woburn Game Fair. I learned early on that if I wanted nice things in life, I had to work hard for them. I am still always prepared to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in - I’m not precious. Why did you choose your particular career? My art teacher gave me purpose by recognising my creative talent and suggesting Art School as a career option. I applied to Chelsea School of Art because my teacher had trained there and my enrolment offered a career path that has turned into a lifelong passion. Chelsea developed my ability in unique thought and ideas, the single most significant factor I attribute to my 39 years of continuous employment in the creative and marketing industry. What’s the best job you’ve had and why? Working with my team through the pandemic. Our clients needed campaigns that were responsive and sensitively handled. Working at a distance, our successful NHS Nightingale recruitment campaigns were only possible due to the culture and ‘can do’ attitude of everyone involved.Working from home, we were reliant on each other and we developed new ways to keep team spirit high and focused. My team responded admirably, demonstrating real care and diligence towards our clients. I am very proud of them. …and the worst? Hairdresser and working with food... Just not for me, which is hilarious when you can see that my biggest investment in myself is my hair. I am a ‘colour’holic. And I have absolutely no compulsion in spending big on eating out. What’s the best advice you’ve received in business? “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” is something that resonates with me. I thrive on my work, my business is threaded into every part of my life and I have the same enthusiasm for my work as I did the day I left university in 1983. What has been the highlight of your career? My role as president of the Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce. It was completely unexpected appointment and a real honour. My family moved to Bletchley in the early 1960s and I am a real MK advocate so the role fitted well with my background. I enjoyed building trust with the Chamber’s audiences and meeting key influencers, ultimately to bring Milton Keynes as a business community closer together.

MUSIC / SONG David Bowie. Ziggy Stardust. Because Bowie was a musical genius. I have a big love of all music, concerts, and gigs.

What annoys you the most in business? Businesses that knock competitors. It is done only to diminish a competitor’s appeal to a prospective customer. Those that do it don’t realise that it makes them look like followers, not leaders. Mentioning a competitor to criticise them only serves to bring them to the client’s attention - a good reason why I never do it. What’s your career ambition? To pass on knowledge. I love working with staff and seeing them grow. I have often thought that doing some kind of lecturing would be great to do beyond VI. …and your life ambition? To travel the world. I try to visit a different place for every holiday - with so many great places to visit, why waste time going somewhere you have been already? If you’re self-employed, holidays are borrowed time therefore it stands to reason that my retirement will make up for this. What’s the best moment of your life? Most recently, winning in successive years at the British Chamber Business Awards with Barker Shoes. It was incredible. Barker Shoes remain one of my most enjoyed accounts and the work we did and our successes are a demonstration of what strong partnerships between client and suppliers can achieve. …and the worst? In relation to British Chambers awards, not buying a new dress for the second ceremony. Having won the first year, I didn’t believe lightning would strike twice. How do you relax? Gardening and walking. Being outside improves my mood and reduces my stress. What’s your guilty pleasure? Singing my heart out in the car. When I’m driving alone, I love nothing better than putting on my favourite tunes and singing along at the top of my voice. What’s your worst fault? No surprise to those who know me well but it is my impatience. I have learned that not everything can happen quickly and I’m much better than when I was younger but it’s still a challenge. What’s your most treasured possession? I am an antiques collector so it has to be my collections or one of my most prized possessions. I have a passion for ceramics and love Art Deco but also all things 1950s and vintage. I’m a big fan of the post-war designs, of designers like Colin Melbourne. Some of his most famous work is when he was designing ceramics for the Beswick factory. I love pieces that use asymmetric forms. Design in these periods pushed the boundaries. They represent the best in creativity and what can be done when imagination, boldness, creativity and strong work ethic come together to make a powerful impact on the world. What are you afraid of? Birds flying around my head. I blame Alfred Hitchcock - I watched The Birds far too young. Tell us something you regret? I was told by my university tutor that my work was very strong and that I should apply to the Royal College of Art to do a Royal Academy degree. But I couldn’t afford to fund myself and, because of this, I didn’t even try. Interestingly, I wouldn’t even hesitate now. Tell us a secret about yourself? I have just started learning to dance the jive. I have always like dancing and singing. It’s not Strictly Come Dancing but I love it. It’s fun, and good exercise. What are the first three things on your bucket list? Places that I am yet to visit: n The Grand Canyon and US West Coast n Santorini, Greece n Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

A feature in which business people discuss their motivation, ambition, experience - and themselves. This month it’s Jacqui Wilkins, managing director of creative marketing agency Visual Identity and past president of Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce.

Art Deco and the jive - but don’t mention the birds Jacqui Wilkins MY FAVOURITE... …and the low point? The recession of 2008. As a business we were victims of being one client and one industry heavy. Since then, we have learned the lesson, we have diversified our client base and are much stronger as a result - a key factor that helped Visual Identity through the pandemic. I recognise that my past performance is the best reference for future. We all make mistakes - this builds character - but it’s important to always look back on mistakes and learn from them.

What’s more, like myself, he is also one half of a successful husband-and-wife team. I liked his mission “to breathe new life into old ideas”. I became a complete fan, instantly. Prior to this, it was Deborah Meaden.

No hiding behind a zoom camera with just a shirt and a pair of shorts or jogger bottoms on anymore! At Saint Crispin we are always looking to provide you with a well thought out, capsule wardrobe of clothing that will take you to the office, the boardroom, networking with customers or any social occasions outside of work as well. Start with the all-important suit that provides you with that unique impact, so important still, in the world of business. We know that suit trousers get far more wear that the suit jacket so we always suggest an extra pair of trousers to make your suit jacket last much longer. As a very special introductory offer we would like to offer you an extra free pair of trousers with every suit purchased making sound economic sense.

For anyone who has been looking for suiting it has become very difficult to find. The distinct lack of demand through COVID has caused many companies to stop manufacturing suiting all together and in other cases a far more limited selection of styles and size ranges. This is why so many potential customers are now making enquiries to get a few well-made stylish garments that fit them correctly ready for their return to work. As a result, we are getting many more calls to book an appointment to view the new fabrics and order suiting for September & October. From the point of ordering the process can take between 6-8 weeks, hence the urgency to plan ahead! Unfortunately, some leave it far too late, make sure you are not one of those.

Aztech IT Solutions was founded in 2006 by brothers Sean, Mike and Chris Houghton. Sean, commercial and operations director, says: “It is incredible what the club have done for the city of Milton Keynes in recent years. We look forward to developing relations and the partnership with the club over the next few years and beyond.”

eEnergy agrees historic shirt sponsorship for an initial three years

eEnergy Group plc, one of the UK’s leading net zero energy consultants, recently acquired Utility Team and will continue their work in helping Stadium MK work towards Net Zero status through a number of energy management and efficiency projects.MKDons chairman Pete Winkelman pictured (centre) with eEnergy’s managing director enerrgy management Delvin Lane (left) and sales directorcorporate Kieran Dixon says: “We have formed a close working partnership with Delvin and the eEnergy team over the past two years. The knowledge and expertise provided by Utility Team, and now eEnergy, has been invaluable in a challenging energy environment, and we are very grateful to them for their ongoing and increased support.” MK Dons is building a strong reputation for attracting big brands and high-level partnerships.“Having a back-of-shirt sponsor for the first time really demonstrates this,” says the chairman. “We have always been very selective on who we choose to work with, especially when it comes to putting logos on our shirt, but eEnergy are a true partner and a company we are proud to have adorning our playing kit for the next three season.”Therelationship between the Dons and eEnergy since the partnership began two years ago has been such that the company is keen to grow its exposure and continue to develop strong bonds with fellow partners, says MK Dons commercial manager AndyHistoricallyWooldridge. the club’s headline sponsor Suzuki GB has had exclusive rights to kit sponsorship. “However, they have seen the opportunity for the club to grow its commercial partners and have waived their right to exclusivity in their new agreement to allow for this move,” Mr Wooldridge says.

Cyersecurity and IT specialist Aztech IT Solutions has agreed a three-year deal to be MK Dons FC’s new technology partner. The partnership will see Linford Wood-based Aztech sponsor the hospitality areas at Stadium MK and use hospitality and tickets to entertain key clients and reward staff. The Salvation Army expects the number of families in need to increase due to the cost of living crisis. It begins making up parcels for distribution on December 5 and is requesting donations and offers of help before that date.

Charity sends a Christmas SOS The Salvation Army is once again calling on businesses across Milton Keynes to back the charity’s annual Christmas appeal. The aim of the appeal is to ensure that no young person goes without a Christmas gift.

Car draw prize delivers on electric dreams

“Something which does not easily with us as a business,” says director Charmian Alexander inset “We have been looking for some time for a way to recycle these vital medical devices and then came across Pace4Life, an amazing charity that is able to collect the pacemakers, assess them for reuse and ship to countries that can put them to great use.”Pacemakers are small electrical devices used to treat some abnormal heart rhythms. It is estimated that every year up to two million people die in the developing world because they cannot afford a new pacemaker operation. “With the support from firms such as Neville Funerals, hospitals and clinics, we can be confident that we can raise wider awareness of the situation and the simple recycling fix that can make such a significant difference.”Pacemakers are powered by longlasting lithium batteries and are usually encased in either stainless steel or titanium. Once fitted, the average life-span of a pacemaker is between seven and ten years. Pace4Life looks to use pacemakers with greater than or equal to 70 per cent battery life in line with the protocols set. Neville Funerals has formal donation agreements in place that allow families and individuals to donate either their own or a deceased family member’s pacemaker, similar to an organ donor system. “Our part in this process may be small but the thought that it will allow others to live their best and longer life as a result is incredibly rewarding and a very uplifting exchange for the families, allowing us to donate too,” says Charmian. “It is our hope that we can spread the word and the practice of passing on pacemakers to Pace4Life and extend the debate and the opportunity throughout the funeral industry and our communities. It is an opportunity that we simply must grasp and promote.”

National crime figures for the 12-month period ending in September 2021 show that sexual offences recorded by the police were the highest on record, at 170,973 offences across the UK. The figures represent a 12 per cent increase from the same period in 2020.

Pacemaker scheme is a developing world lifeline

“In the United Kingdom, approximately 35,000 individuals undergo pacemaker implant surgery each year,” says heart surgeon Dr Joel Dunning, Pace4Life’s lead trustee. “When a pacemaker user dies, the device is buried with them or if the deceased chooses to be cremated it is discarded either as medical waste or often just placed in a box and forgotten. “Yet, in the developing world, millions die each year due to inaccessibility to medical healthcare and the prohibitive cost of pacemaker surgery.”Pace4Life was set up to respond with a project that aims to send thousands of discarded pacemakers to needy individuals. “It is using creative methods of delivering costly healthcare to impoverished countries,” says Dr Dunning. When preparing the deceased for cremation, a pacemaker has to be removed before transport to the crematorium. Neville Funerals collects more than 200 pacemakers, carrying out the procedure with family members’ approval, that would be otherwise disposed of as clinical waste and some sent to landfill.
