It was exciting to have the 2016 SsangYong Counties Cup finally return to its home track at Pukekohe Park last month. And what a day it was. A huge thank you to all members and supporters that came along on the day and enjoyed the entertainment on show despite the despondent weather. The course staff headed by our General Manager Greg Mitchell did a superb job in presenting the Course Proper in pristine order. No jockey, trainer or horse could fault it and it played fair and well throughout the day considering the constant showers on track.

trainers Moira & Kieran Murdoch and the Rogers team take out the quinella in the Group 2 NRM Breeders Stakes with Lasarla and Somethingvain. Over $220,000 was turned over through the tote, so I hope all of the punters out there made some pocket money on the day. The premier race meeting was followed closely by our Christmas at the Races day which was full of festivities and amusing entertainment including a Santa’s Run. The next significant event on our calendar is the Special General Meeting on Tuesday 13th December at 6:00pm which I hope all Members can attend. I wish you all a safe and merry Christmas, and hope to see you all back at the next race meeting in the new year on Saturday 28th January 2017.

track talk Interested in what’s going on at the Pukekohe Park Thoroughbred Training Facility? Here is the latest news from our local horses, trainers and jockeys. The long-awaited for Spring couldn’t come early enough for the locals, with some impressive performances and young talent emerging from the stables. From the jockey ranks, 22-year-old Alysha Collett, daughter of trainer Richard Collett, has been having one of her best seasons to date. At the time of print, Alysha was sitting second on the premiership table, notching up 33 winners so far.

Jon Miller’s Prince of Passion also took out the FastTrack Insurance 1400 on the day in a very close three-way finish. And Nigel Tiley’s Oscar Eight ran a nice second in the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes for two-year-olds. Both Nigel Tiley and Richard Collett are currently sitting on eight winners so far this season, with Collett also enjoying success over the ditch from their Warwick Farm base in Sydney. No doubt with the Summer racing schedule we will see plenty more winners from the Pukekohe Park locals.

This included a Listed winner aboard her fathers trained Top Prospect, with an impressive performance in the Trevor Eagle Memorial Stakes at Ellerslie. The win was the third consecutive for the smart three-year-old, with trainer Richard Collett now aiming the gelding for the Gr.1 Vodafone Derby. “He’s doing all the talking – he’s a very good horse,” Collett said. Counties Racing Club’s premier meeting, the SsangYong Counties Cup Day, also brought great success to the locals on Saturday 19th November. This included the feature race, the Gr.2 NRM Breeders Stakes which was taken out by the Murdoch trained Lasarla. Owned by Clyde and Pat Buckingham, the Rip Van Winkle filly was an upset winner in the field, with the second-placing also going to a local, the Rogers-trained Somethingvain.

refreshments, and put on a day for the kids to enjoy. A lot of people have helped us be here today, and the looks on the kid’s faces when they get out of the cars says it all really,” says Chris.

From being taken for a spin around the track in either the BA Falcon, 2008 GT 500 Mustang or XF Falcon, to being able to drive a vehicle around the track, the students were given the star studded treatment at Pukekohe Park.

Nationally renowned driver, Shane Allen, and D1NZ Drifting Champion, Curt Whittaker, took the children for a spin, with Curt saying he really enjoys the charity days.

Parkside School is located in Pukekohe, and is nationally recognised for working with students who fall into the broad categories of profound, severe and moderate disability. Chris Allen of Rattla Motorsport said they wanted to give back something to community. “We wanted to do something for the kids, and give them an opportunity that they really wouldn’t get the chance to do otherwise. So the team at the Mount Shop have rallied together, and got some tyres, fuel and

“We are really passionate about motor racing and it is great to be able to share it with the community.. The kids have been just magic, and there wasn’t one that didn’t want to go faster. We are all locals around here, and it is good to be able to give something back to the community who has shown us so much support. We hope we can do more of these days in the future.”

Notice of Special General Meeting The Secretary of the Counties Racing Club Inc (“club”) hereby gives notice of a Special General Meeting in accordance with Rules 35 and 36 of the Club’s Rules. The Special General Meeting is being held at 6:00pm on Tuesday 13th December 2016 in the Sponsors Lounge at Counties Racing Club, 222-250 Manukau Rd, Pukekohe. • Time: 6:00 pm • Date: Tuesday 13th December 2016 • Venue: Sponsors Lounge, Counties Racing Club Lasarla takes out the Gr.2 NRM Breeders Stakes over Somethingvain

The purpose and agenda of the Special General Meeting is as follows: • Proposal to sell land • Following full discussion of the above matters, the following resolutions will be put to members: That in accordance with rule 46 of the Rules of the Club, the members: a. Approve the sale of the Development Land, and the entry by the Club into the associated Agreement for Sale and Purchase, including any variation to that agreement which is considered necessary, or otherwise in the interests of the Club, by the Committee of the Club (Sale Agreement), but only on the basis that the proceeds from the sale only be used for annuity income bearing commercial investment/s, and that any proposed investment/s be brought to members for prior approval at an AGM or SGM; and

Jockey Alysha Collett is at the top of her game this season

b. Authorise the Committee of the Club (or any to Committee members) to execute any documents which are necessary or advisable to give effect to the requirements of the Sale Agreement and proceed with the transaction that is the subject of the Sale Agreement; and c. That the Committee be authorised to apply the existing reserves for upgrading and other on-site improvements and for working capital. Greg Mitchell Secretary Background The Committee has entered into an agreement to sell 2.6 ha of the Club’s land (Development Land). The land is between Float Road (Gate 1), and to the main entrance at Gate 2 and back towards the tie-up area. Whilst this is a large piece of land, it has never been fully utilised, nor has it provided a return. The funds that the sale yields provide the Club with the necessary funding to upgrade the facilities and to develop investments that provide annuity income streams that will secure the future sustainability of the Club as a thoroughbred racing facility. A range of Members concerns from the 2016 AGM have now been worked through between the Board and the Purchaser resulting in a more suitable proposed Sale and Purchase Agreement for the Club’s benefit. The Club was required to enter into a confidentiality deed to protect the purchaser’s commercial confidentiality; however, the Committee is able to disclose the following details of the sale: 1. The purchase price is $7,400,000 plus GST (if any); 2. The Development Land is situated at 222 Manukau Road, Pukekohe on the north-west corner of the Club’s property; 3. The purchaser is Pukekohe Land Investments Ltd; and 4. The purchaser is a reputable developer with experience, and intends to develop the land for its own reputable commercial use.

ssangyong Counties cup day Weather didn’t stop punters as the SsangYong Counties Cup Day returned home.

The SsangYong Counties Cup Day returned to Pukekohe Park on Saturday in damp but smart fashion. Several punters braved the weather and made the most of the entertainment on show in the fashions and the live music on course. The winner of the feature race on the day, the SsangYong Counties Cup, went to the Stephen Marsh-trained Chocante, who was very tough in winning, and ridden by jockey Craig Grylls.

“ Several punters braved

the weather and made the most of the entertainment on show” Another winner on the day was local hairdresser Stacey Hanley, who took out the Lone Star Pukekohe Fashion in the Field catwalk competition in a stunning crème dress and gold and pink millinery. Hanley will go on to represent Pukekohe Park at the Viva Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie in March, and took home with her the $500 cash prize along with over $1,000 worth of vouchers. The 2016 SsangYong Counties Cup Day was the first time the meeting was held

back at Pukekohe Park since the renovation of the Course Proper [horse racing track] in 2014 and has since showed it is in perfect condition, as aJasmine ‘Dead 5’ in wet Youngracing jockey conditions.

Fawcett celebrated her The premier followed closely by first winnermeeting in thewas Mount the Christmas at the Races twilight meeting Shop 1400 aboard Zambezi on Wednesday 30th November. It was a festive evening with plentyWarrior. of entertainment on and off the track, including an amusing Santa Run between hospitality guests. Our next race meeting will be in the new year, our Town & Country Raceday on Saturday 28th January. So grab the family and get down to see some wood chopping competitions and catch the feature racing.

Pukekohe Park puts it on for V8 Supercars Pukekohe delivered a weekend of fast-car heaven as 106,753 supercar fans flocked to the spiritual home of New Zealand motorsport – Pukekohe Park – for the ITM Auckland Supersprint. It was a bustling weekend in Pukekohe with locals, internationals, officials and petrol heads all down at the track to watch the New Zealand leg of the Supercar championship. The crowd got to see a range of races including the New Zealand Touring Cars, Muscle Cars, SsangYong Actyon Racing Series and the much anticipated Supercars. It was an emotional finish to the three days of racing for championship leader and Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen, as he claimed the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, for recording the best results over the weekend’s event. It was the first time a New Zealander has won the trophy and an emotional achievement for Shane. While there were battles on the track, none were so exciting as that between Shane and fellow Red Bull Racing driver Jamie Whincup, who won one-two apiece on Saturday’s races. Sunday saw Mark Winterbottom take a win, and another win for Jamie Whincup, with a second for van Gisbergen. The 27-year-old has since won the championship, the first New Zealand driver since Jim Richards in 1991 to win the title. Congratulations to Shane and the Red Bull team.

Pukekohe Park Beautification You may have noticed after your last visit to Pukekohe Park, some of the upgrades and improvements that have been completed throughout the grounds. This included a renovation of the Oaks and Sponsors Lounges on Level 1 in the Main Grandstand. New carpet was laid and a fresh coat of paint applied, and the results are outstanding. Feedback from guests has been extremely positive since the upgrades, and several bookings have been generated resulting in increased revenue to the events centre.
