Wow...what a first couple of weeks our new Year 7s have had! They have settled down fantastically as a year group and seem to be enjoying lessons. This week saw them head off to Nell Bank Activity Centre. I and G band have already enjoyed their visit, S Band will head down on Friday. They have been focused on getting involved (one of their Green Tie Values!) and have been building new friendships and becoming part of their Learning Community. Good luck to S band on Friday...we’re sure you will enjoy it as much as I and G Band!

Headline 18 September 2015 Parent Info is a collaboration between CEOP and The Parent Zone. The Parent Zone was founded in 2005 and has a track record of providing information, support and advice to parents. In recent years, The Parent Zone's work has focused on the impact of digital technologies on families. They provide information, resources and training for parents and those who work with them. CEOP is the child protection command of the National Crime Agency. CEOP reaches over three million children and young people a year through its ‘Thinkuknow’ education programme and regularly conveys its vital online safety messages to over 100,000 practitioners (such as social workers, teachers and police officers) registered to their network, who cascade these messages directly to children and young people.

What is Parent Info? Parent Info provides high quality information to parents and carers about their children's wellbeing and resilience. This service is free and ranges across a wide range of subject matter, from difficult topics about sex, relationships and the internet or body image and peer pressure to broader parenting topics like ‘how much sleep do teenagers need?’ In line with CEOP’s ‘Thinkuknow’ programme, some of the content covers internet safety, but it all starts from the assumption that young people make little distinction between their online and offline lives and the issues for parents are often the same. The aim is to help parents help their children be discriminating, web-literate and resilient. We have dedicated a page on our website for parentinfo, you can find it here and we are also delighted to announce our first Parent Information Evening of the year on eSafety. The event will take place on Tuesday 20th October, 6.30 – 8pm in the Courtyard Café. The Evening will focus on eSafety, the safe use of iPads' and understanding the ‘Home School Agreement' and is an opportunity for parents to increase awareness on eSafety issues and how we support students to be responsible users of the internet at IGS. The evening is open to all years, particularly new parents to IGS, and we look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. In the meantime please have a look at the next two pages dedicated to teenage online speak...do you know what it means? Page 4 Email: newsdesk@ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk

GTG Got to go

Speaking in coded language has been used for years by teenagers trying to hide something, or communicating in their own way. The sudden growth of the online world allowed for more terms to appear and spread more quickly, creating a more universal, viral, version of the teen slang that’s been around for years. Not all of these terms are exclusively used online - they’re as likely to appear in spoken conversation as well as on social media messaging. These terms come and go, becoming out of date or appearing out of nowhere quickly, and some expressions that are cool in one part of the country may be considered outdated in another.

'g' - a friend (boy to boy - originally from 'gangsta')

acc - actually IK - I know (IKR—I know right)

truss - I agree (from trust) on fleek – on point / executed really well to ‘ghost’ someone – to completely ignore someone basic – generally negative term, clumsy/careless/gross

skl - school fierce – looking amazing/ incredible

'ship - short word for relationship

cuz - friend (from cousin) booted - left behind/ dumped (as in ‘I was booted’)

kicked - same meaning as 'booted'

moving to (someone) - approaching, either aggressively or romantically

gassed - happy wag1 (or wagwan) - what’s up?

hella - really blates - obviously peak - unfortunate

These are just some terms that are current and used, but teens all over the country have their own slang which changes all the time. If you are concerned about something you see on your son or daughter’s mobile, iPad or general online activity, our advice is always to talk to them. Further advice and support is available from our Safeguarding team and if you need support or guidance please contact them on safeguarding@ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk. Uniform Matters

We think uniform is really important at Ilkley Grammar School and this week we are reinforcing to students how they should wear their tie. We are proud of our school crest and want to see it proudly displayed on all of their ties.

European Day of Languages Saturday 26th September is European Day of Languages and every year students studying Modern Foreign Languages get the chance to do something a bit different in class that week. The EU has designated this day to celebrate cultural diversity and we will lay on a host of activities for you. For example, you will have the opportunity to answer the register in an array of European languages and carry out a variety of fun and informative activities in lessons.

Challenge and Celebration Week 2016 All Key Stage 3 students must hand in their Challenge and Celebration week option forms into their tutors no later than Monday 21st September and all deposits must be uploaded to Parentpay by Friday 25 th September.

We have challenged our students to try and eat all of their 5 a day fruit and vegetables at school...and yes it is possible! Eat Smart offer a balanced meal choice every day to ensure students are getting enough fruit and vegetables to form the basis of a healthy diet.

Whether it’s an apple instead of a cookie (that also reduces their sugar intake!) or making the most of the free salad with their pizza...we really want to see as many students as possible starting their journey towards 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day. Not sure what makes up a portion of fruit and veg? Check out this quick guide...

Take a look at our menu for next week...are you eating smart? Watch this space for more exciting news on Eat Smart promotions! Page 14 Email: newsdesk@ilkleygs.ngfl.ac.uk
