Case Nos. 1418 & 1419 of 2010 Green 2009, Inc. 3500 Sunrise Highway, Wantagh
Dear Board of Zoning Appeals: I am writing on behalf of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association to oppose the application by the Green 2009, Inc. to use the premises located at 3500 Sunrise Highway in Wantagh as a place of public assembly and amusement for the purposes of a cabaret with live music, dancing and entertainment. Upon information, Billy Dean is the proprietor of Green 2009, Inc. and the current owner of a cabaret in North Bellmore known as “Billy Dean’s Showtime Café.” It is my understanding that customers are entertained by scantily clad dancers who also perform “private dances” at this cabaret. Upon further information, when Billy Dean came before the Board of Zoning Appeals (“BZA”) last year, the BZA asked the application about his intentions for the proposed cabaret in Wantagh. It is my understanding that he responded that it would be the same type of establishment that he operates in North Bellmore. Billy Dean’s Showtime Cafe is advertised on its website as one of Long Island’s premier “strip clubs.” The people of Merrick have overwhelmingly expressed to me their opposition to a strip club opening on Sunrise Highway in Wantagh. The children of our south shore communities should not be blatantly exposed to the indecency and obscenity that such an establishment would bring to our community. Further, this strip club would be situated in a quiet residential area, surrounded by homes with young families. Merrick residents know firsthand that strip clubs attract sexual predators. Reports of sexual attacks were prevalent when a strip club known as “Escapes” operated in Merrick. Three rapists were convicted for raping a woman at this Merrick strip club. We join in solidarity with our Wantagh neighbors in asking that the BZA deny Green 2009, Inc.’s application to open a cabaret at this location. The BZA must protect our families and not allow a potential strip club to open at 3500 Sunrise Highway in Wantagh. Thank you for your anticipated courtesy and cooperation. Please keep us informed as to the status of these requests. Very truly yours,
Claudia Borecky President
