Northdale experience restores faith in public hospitals

A

recent experience at Northdale Hospital has brought renewed faith in the Hippocratic Oath and its tenets, according to Pietermaritz-

burg honours graduate and freelance journalist Ashantha Naidoo who accompanied a relative in need of emergency assistance to the hospital on a recent Saturday evening. The relative had been treated earlier in the day for a severe chest infection by a private doctor. However, Naidoo said, her relative seemed aller-

gic to one of the drugs prescribed and the patient went into anaphylactic shock, a condition which causes severe difficulty in breathing and may even result in death, according to the website eMedicineHealth. Once in casualty, according to Naidoo, the screening room sister was informed of the nature of the patient’s complaint and was about to contact a doctor telephon-

ically, when hospital medic, Dr L C Naidoo, noticed that the patient was in need of immediate medical attention. “On many of the walls of the waiting area of the casualty department, there are official notices which spell out the priority order in which patients are attended to,” Naidoo said. “Non-emergency cases can wait up to between 12 and 18 hours to receive attention. Emergencies are assessed and rated and receive attention according to the severity of the condition. “It is reassuring to note that the old tales which suggest that provincial hospitals are places where people go to die are not true. On the contrary the busy doctors and nurses had everything in the ward capably under control,” said Naidoo. By the time the patient’s card

had been obtained, which took about 10 minutes, according to Naidoo, the patient had already been taken into the casualty ward and had been hooked up to a drip. Naidoo said four doctors assessed the case and a decision was taken to follow a treatment plan. Only once the patient was stabilised, was she wheeled to the high care unit, where she was subsequently monitored by doctors Steenkamp, Dlamini and Maistry. “The attitude of the attending doctors and nurses brought renewed faith in the Hippocratic Oath and its tenets,” said Naidoo. The general cleanliness of the hospital far exceeded expectations, she said, and the high care and general wards were of a standard that would “make anyone proud to be associated with the hospital”.

Community development leaders awarded

Aroo Naidoo (left) and Dan Moodley (above) were two of many who received Best Local Community Development Leadership Awards at the Indondo Annual Community Achievement Award ceremony held at the City Hall last Friday. Awards are presented to local community members who have dedicated their lives and times to the upliftment of the communities in Pietermaritzburg. This award ceremony is presented by KwaZuluNatal Provincial Government and hosted by the Inheritors Foundation Church of Christ. Public Eye August 10, 2012 - Page 4

New Mandela S sculpture unveiled

tate President Jacob Zuma officially unveiled a R5 million sculpture of former president Dr Nelson Mandela at the Mandela Capture Site outside Howick at the weekend and called on the country’s citizens to take pride in their history and heritage. With 2012 marking the 50th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s incarceration, Zuma also called for the youth to learn about the country’s history and its liberation struggles. “Children should be encouraged to visit heritage sites across the country so that they can understand the country’s history,” said Zuma. He said the site would create huge economic spinoffs for tourism, and urged communities to look after the capture site’s precinct. “I appeal to you to look after this site as this is the only site where Mandela was captured in 1962; there is no other,” urged Zuma. Also attending the event were Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Zwelivelile Mandela, with nephew Zwelithemba, KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize, Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa

Dube, Umgeni Mayor Mbali Myeni and uMgungundlovu Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee. Mandla Mandela said the unveiling of the statue was a bittersweet moment, adding that it was a brilliant way to honour his grandfather. “We as the Mandela family are very happy. We commend the people who came up with this initiative,” said Mandela. Zwelithemba

said although the occasion was a happy one, the family still wants to know about the people who informed the apartheid police of Mandela’s trip to Johannesburg in 1962, which led to his capture in Howick. The sculpture, set into the KZN Midlands landscape, and designed by artist Marco Cianfanelli, consists of steel poles which are the vertical bars representing Nelson Mandela's imprisonment. Inside, there is a portrait of Mandela. According to Cianfanelli, the process was mooted in 2005. Cianfanelli worked together with Jeremy Rose, who is an architect, and Apartheid Museum director Christopher Till. “There are still many things that are on the pipeline for this precinct. The premier has indicated his intention to meet with me with regard to improving this place,” said an elated Till.

TESTIMONIAL OF FAITH “Solomon who predicts things that are really going to happen” With many years of happiness we started falling apart. Our business went down we lost our houses, cars, my husband and I started ¿ghting each other and his family turned against me. Our two children left the house, I picked up a rash all over my, we started hearing noise in the house, our lives turned upside down, I didn’t know where to go to. One day I was listening to a radio station I heard someone testify about Solomon, who helps people, in darkness to light of happiness. I contacted him to book an appointment, he told me to come after two days, I was scared to go there but when I arrived, I found a lot of White and Indians waiting to get help. I went to the shrine, he charged me R100 to read out my fortune. I was touched and grateful when he picked every point of my life, he also picked up my sickness that I have, all in a dish of water. He prayed for me and washed my feet with oil and water then he blessed me and told me within three days time, every thing in my life will fall into place and which truly happened. He is truly one of the God’s servant. Bring your worries to Solomon, he will iron them out. He also help with weak bladder, psoriasis, relationships, pregnancy dif¿culty, business, etc

Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. Those who were working for whites as nannies were carrying their white charges with them. The women sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo. In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: “you strike a woman, you strike a rock”) has come to represent women’s courage and strength in South Africa.

The march was led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. Other participants included Frances Baard, a statue of whom was unveiled by Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins in Kimberley on National Women’s Day 2009. Since August 9, 1994, the day has been commemorated annually and is known as “Women’s Day” in South Africa. In 2006, a reenactment of the march was staged for its 50th anniversary, with many of the 1956 march veterans.

“HE SHOWED ME MY ENEMIES LIVE IN A MIRROR” MR CHETTY (40) – HAYFIELDS A few days back Shivan, testi¿ed about the wonderful services of Mr OMAR and decided not to just sit but also tell the whole world about him. I was referred to him by a friend and called him to book an appointment. He charged me a nominal fee to read my fortune. He told me my name and showed me everything going on in my life, live in a mirror and I was shocked. My business had fallen down and my wife had left me for another man in Australia for 6 years. OMAR cast a spell for me and in 3 days my wife contacted me and later made arrangements and came back. We are so happy together today, and my business grew after I was helped by OMAR. I must say OMAR was sent to me by the grace of God. If you would wish to contact Omar At his private House
