What is a Reiki Lineage? A lineage is the line of teaching that your teacher has been trained in, similar to a family tree. A teacher’s lineage reflects the information that the teacher will be passing on to the student. Therefore, different lineages will have different techniques, philosophies and understandings of working with the system of Reiki. Some lineages even have different histories. It is important when undertaking Usui Reiki training that your teacher is able to provide you with a full unbroken lineage tracing back to Mikao Usui. Since the system of Reiki began in the early 1900s and was brought to the west in 1938 by Hawayo Takata, there have been various histories and understandings about the system of Reiki. Since Hawayo Takata died in 1980 there have been a number of people who have created their own lineages. Lineages which do not originate from Mikao Usui are acceptable for UK Reiki Federation membership, but will not meet requirements for regulation. To know if your lineage is a viable Usui Reiki lineage contact us via our website. We provide a Lineage Tracing Service at UKRF, so all you need to do is follow the links to get started. There is a small fee for the service, then you can send us your details and our Lineage Co-ordinator Amit Sihra will contact you. Find out more here:

Our Vision Statement The UKRF is committed to providing support to the Reiki Community by promoting the highest standards of Reiki at all levels through respect, positivity and compassion. We aim to lead the way and to be innovators in Reiki education, Animal Reiki and research, for every step of your Reiki journey.

Our Values Compassion:

Supporting our members through their learning and practice

To be kind to others at all times

To always value our members

To always uphold the Reiki principles, UK Reiki Federation Constitution and Code of Ethics for all our members and the public

Back to Reiki shares One thing we all missed during the ‘lockdown era’ was being able to get together with members of our Reiki community and hold Reiki shares. Holding or attending a Reiki share is a wonderful way of meeting other Reiki students, Practitioners, Teachers and all those interested in finding out more about Reiki. The concept of a Reiki share is for everyone attending to both give and receive Reiki healing in a supportive and loving environment. There are maybe to 3 or more people to each treatment couch, and whilst one person is laying on the couch everyone else is giving Reiki to them. When that session is finished someone else will then be treated. This rotation continues until everyone has received a treatment.

Reiki share benefits For those who may wish to build their confidence in giving treatments or for those who have little or no experience of using Reiki. The shares are a good way to build their confidence and knowledge. Reiki Practitioners can also benefit enormously from attending Reiki shares as by nature they are very giving people and wish to heal others, sometimes forgetting their own needs. Reiki shares are an opportunity for them to receive Reiki themselves. Reiki shares are also a good way to meet other like-minded people and discuss experiences of using receiving or training in Reiki. The UK Reiki Federation holds a list of members who currently hold shares in that area so if you are interested in attending a share then do please see the list and contact the member holding it. If you hold a Reiki share, please contact the office to get your share added to our list. Reiki shares are usually held once a month and serve to be a focal point for ongoing contact and support. Participating in a Reiki share is very beneficial to the individual and to the whole group collectively, it is an amazing experience to be part of a group meeting together to heal and be healed.

The very nature of kindness is to spread.

If you are kind to others, today they will be kind to you, and tomorrow to somebody else. -Sri Chinmoy

Distance Healing Group: Summer updates from Jo Fellows Join our distance healing team to benefit others (and yourself too) We’re always looking for new members to join the UKRF distance healing team - there are 80 of us at the moment - but the more the merrier! Hiroshi Doi suggests that the healing is amplified by the square of the number of people ‘sending’ the Reiki healing - (currently our 80 healers is 6,400 times more powerful) so if we have more members then the healing will always be amplified more. And, we not only ‘send’ healing to those that request it, but to each other too! :)) The distance healing team continues to grow, but we are always looking for new members too. The more healers we can get involved, the stronger the healing for those that request it.

If you know of any UKRF members who are interested in joining the team, please ask them to contact Distance Healing Co-ordinator Jo Fellows directly at

Distance Healing with the UK Reiki Federation The UK Reiki Federation offer their Practitioner members the opportunity to become part of a large distance healing network...and we’re always looking for new team members!

Distance Healing Group UKRF Reiki Practitioners give their time each week to send Reiki healing to anyone who makes a request from anywhere in the world. How the group works is that each week the volunteers receive a list of those people/animals/events that have requested healing and we all collectively send positive Reiki healing to everyone on the list, at a time that suits each one of us.

Would you like to join our team? Email: for more information.

Annual Conference September 2023 - Surrey

It was wonderful to see so many of our members join us for our first in-person event for three years, and as arrivals started flowing in around 9am, the excitement levels were high! It was a bright, sunny day and 120 members took their places in the beautiful Coulson Manor Hotel reception suite ready and bubbling to meet everyone in person for the first time in so long. Our compère for the day was the charismatic Geoff Rolls who kept the day running seamlessly between each speaker in his own calm style. Geoff gave his introduction and also shared some of his thoughts about his kinesiology practice throughout the day. Johannes Reidl then took us on a Reiki share journey which was a rare chance for us all to share our Reiki gift with Johannes, who is the Usui Shiki Ryoho lineage bearer. Although Johannes has previously attended online UKRF events, it was the first time most people had met him in person, so this was a treat indeed and a great start to the day.

Next up was Torsten Lange, international speaker and author of multiple Reiki books under the Hay House label. Torsten brought us some extremely interesting insights about Reiki but also talked about the direction the human race is travelling. He shared his personal journey to finding Reiki and how it has changed his life in truly amazing ways, leaving so many attendees feeling inspired and thoughtful. In fact some of the subjects that came up during this session carried on later into the evening when our committee were talking about the day. Watch a section of Torsten’s talk here: 10 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

REIKI WORLD For anyone who loves animals, the presentation brought to us by our Animal Coordinator, Laura Barbour was truly inspiring. Laura took us through the updates in the process of becoming an Animal Reiki practitioner and also about how to understand how animals can communicate their consent to receive Reiki and very importantly, how to tell if they don’t consent. This turned into a very interesting discussion with many questions being offered by members around the room. Feedback from this was that some members who had never considered training to become Animal Reiki practitioners, were now interested in finding out more. It was great to hear how much work is being done by UKRF to get Reiki recognised by vets too. A very important step. Hear a snippet of Laura’s presentation here:

Jo and Simon Fellows then showed us what an amazing team they are by talking us through the methods and instruments they use on their yoga retreats. This started with the ocean drum which is used to mask distracting background sounds and create ‘white noise’ to allow your focus to be on the drums. Once the sound bath began, everyone melted into their chairs as they enjoyed the serenity of the penetrating sounds produced by the range of singing bowls. Several attendees commented on the amazing energy in the room with so many Reiki people in one place all sharing these experiences together. If you missed the conference you can hear an excerpt of the singing bowls session here: Next, Jo Fellows talked to us about how Yoga can work well with Reiki and took us through some pranayama breathwork, which was perfect following on from the sound bowls. Jo explained how yoga works with mind, body and spirit to calm the mind and align the body. Reiki and yoga work well together and this was demonstrated clearly by Jo’s session.

Annual Conference During the breaks, delegates enjoyed networking and meeting new people and also perused the selection of crystals on offer from Pauline Flitton. Many people purchased beautiful crystals and jewellery items to take home – a lovely memento of a great day. You may recognise Pauline from our recent online events. Torsten was on hand to sign copies of his latest book – ‘Proof of Reiki – Proof of Eternity’ and his table full of fresh copies had gone by the end of the day.

After a lunch break our Reiki Research Coordinator, Dr Duncan Cross took us through the preliminary results form the most recent UKRF survey published in July. The subject of this survey was ‘Reiki and Meditation’ and sought to find out about the demographics of the Reiki community. Duncan explained the importance of collecting this type of information so we can know more about the community as a whole. This is an important step in becoming more inclusive and to enable us to bring in members from all nationalities, genders, religions, age groups and races – Reiki is for everyone after all. 12 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

REIKI WORLD Duncan’s talk brought up important topics around inclusivity and has helped UKRF to start growing the diversity team within our organisation – which can only be a great thing for us all. A couple of members were so inspired by this that they have now joined our committee to help with our diversity and inclusion commitments, including bringing new online events for the future. You can hear an excerpt of Duncan’s talk here: We were then ready for Jasmin Harsono’s meditation session which was a lovely way to connect to the Reiki energy. Jasmin Harsono is a wellness practitioner and author who created this meditation technique called the Three Diamond Breath. This technique is based on the Japanese energetic system and involves breathing exercises that focus on three energy centres in the body: Hara, Heart, and Third Eye. Looking around the room it was obvious that everyone was fully immersed in the meditation, and again the energy in the room was fabulous. To bring the conference to a close Johannes shared many of his insights with us, including his personal journey which brought him to be recognised as the lineage bearer for Usui Shiki Ryoho in March 2019. It was inspiring to hear him speak of the former lineage bearer, Phyllis Lei Furumoto and how she selected Johannes to take over when she passed. This was followed by a question and answer session and many people asked the panel to explain various aspects of UKRF activities and the subject of research was discussed in a bit more detail. In summary, the 2023 conference was a huge success and we have received many, many positive comments from attendees who all enjoyed the many varied speakers we had lined up for the day. It was lovely to know that many members travelled quite some distance, some staying overnight, to share this with us. Putting together an all-day event such as this has its challenges so we are so pleased that it was received so well and that the attendees have become inspired in so many ways. Please do follow us on social media and keep an eye out for our many online events we run throughout each month. We also send a monthly email to all members with the forthcoming month’s events, so you can be sure never to miss our Reiki shares, meditations, webinars and talks. Thank you for sharing this day with us. UKRF Team

The significance of Reiki and Diwali by Nikita Thakrar

Diwali is the most celebrated festival of India amongst Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists around the world. It is also known as the festival of lights, as people decorate their homes, shops and streets with clay lamps, candles, and colourful lights. Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It is a time to reflect, rejoice and renew.

In India, Diwali is celebrated for five consecutive days and everyone is given time off to immerse themselves in rituals and celebrations, although in the UK people usually only dedicate one day, this year it was on Sunday 12th November.

Diwali is a festival that brings joy, hope and harmony to people of all ages. It is a time to reflect on one’s inner light and overcome the darkness within. It is also opportunity to spread “Reiki and Diwali are an love, peace and goodwill to ways of bringing divine all.

There are many stories and legends associated with Diwali, depending on the region and tradition light into the world, Growing up as a Hindu of the people. One of the in Britain, Diwali was most popular ones is the both literally and celebrated in my home return of Lord Rama, his metaphorically.” with as much significance, wife Sita and his brother if not more than Christmas. Lakshmana to their I recall fond memories of family gatherings, kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and feasts, presents and fireworks. One year my defeating the demon king Ravana. The people school asked me to dress up in a sari and give of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting diyas a talk about the significance of Diwali during and bursting crackers. an assembly. This made me feel proud of my culture and heritage. However, it was only years Another story is the worship of Goddess later when I discovered Reiki that I really began Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, to contemplate on its deeper meaning. who is said to visit and bless the homes that are clean, bright and festive. Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki Some also celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna’s comes from the Japanese words rei, meaning wife Radha, or the victory of Lord Krishna over universal, and ki, meaning universal life force. the demon Narakasura. Reiki practitioners channel this energy through In some parts of India, Diwali is also dedicated their hands and transfer it resulting in physical, to the goddess Kali, who represents power, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Reiki strength and destruction of evil. can be practiced in person or at a distance, using a sacred symbol and mantra to connect with the recipient across time and space.

REIKI WORLD The link between Reiki and Diwali may not seem obvious, but there are some connections that can be explored. One being that both Reiki and Diwali are ways of bringing divine light into the world, both literally and metaphorically. Reiki practitioners use their hands to transmit healing light to themselves and others, while during Diwali we use candles and lamps to illuminate our homes and surroundings. Both practices can also be seen as ways of replacing negativity, fear, and ignorance with joy and gratitude creating a positive atmosphere of peace and harmony. Another connection is that both Reiki and Diwali are related to the concept of vibrations and energy. Reiki is based on the idea that everything is made of energy which can be channelled for healing purposes. Diwali is also associated with energy in the form of fire, which represents the divine spark within each living being. Fire is also a symbol of purification, transformation, and power. Both Reiki and Diwali can be understood as ways of enhancing one’s personal energy and connecting with the universal life force. A third connection is that both Reiki and Diwali have spiritual aspects that can enrich one’s life. Reiki is not a religion, but it can be compatible with any faith or belief system. Reiki practitioners often experience a deeper sense of spirituality, intuition, and awareness as they practice on themselves and others. Diwali is also a spiritual festival that celebrates various aspects of the divine, such as wisdom, love, abundance, and protection. When we look deeper, we realise that in fact Diwali can encourage us all to reflect on our values and blessings, in order to express gratitude to the higher power. Self-doubt...what would you do if you weren’t afraid? by Tanya Leiper

I heard this wonderfully thought-provoking quote for the first time recently and it set me to thinking what would I do?

Another wonderful quote I recently read is ‘Whatever we choose to think, we choose to have in our lives.’

And also, looking back, what things have I not done?

So, if we are thinking negatively we are actually projecting negative energy towards ourselves and we are more likely to experience the attached negative realities.

I heard the quote during a radio interview with a very successful lady who was certainly very clever and who’d had an amazing career, and yet this same lady spoke about regularly battling with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

Therefore, when we have a negative internal dialogue that is continuing to affect us, change really needs to come from within ourselves.

It was very interesting to hear that someone who had achieved so much still had the same feelings of self-doubt that the rest of us experience and this leads to the question...

The good news is that by acknowledging our self-doubt and then choosing positive internal dialogue we are inviting lovely supportive and nurturing energy towards ourselves.

What can we do about it?

Mantras are a great way of supporting this change since they both help us towards a more positive frame of mind and they also help to lift the energy within and around us.

This is an interesting question since we can have lots of supportive people around us cheering us on and giving lots of encouragement, and this can be wonderfully helpful, but if the same negative internal feelings and dialogue remain, it can still ultimately hold us back.

“...change really needs to come from within ourselves.”

Phrases such as: “I give myself permission to be brave.” Or simply... “I trust in myself” Or any other positive phrases that feel right to you are wonderfully supportive. We tend to be creatures of habit so sometimes changes in our lives or trying something new can seem quite daunting and this can in turn fuel negative thoughts and therefore negative energy.

There are times when, to move forward, we do just need to make that internal choice to acknowledge that we are afraid, square our shoulders and reach out anyway to take hold of those wonderful life opportunities that are in front of us. Don’t let your internal dialogue hold you back, life is just too valuable to miss out on. The trick is giving it a go, enjoying the experience and maybe learning something along the way. So, project lots of lovely positive energy towards yourself, square those shoulders, and trusting in yourself, step forward, and take hold of those wonderful life opportunities with both hands.

And you know what, more often than not, you will be so glad that you did. Tanya Leiper Reiki Master

Such policies were not easily available to therapists at this time as the policies were more focused to those in the medical professions. David worked on designing and refining cover that would meet the specific needs of Health and Wellbeing professionals, this is where our journey with these clients began. Sustainable Health Care Group Paula, Jodi and Nikki are members of the UK Reiki Federation and the Sustainable Heath Care Group and have been researching ways of becoming integrated with care in the community. We’ve been looking at working with GP surgeries, Social Prescribers and Wellbeing hubs to assist in helping to care for their clients. It is a slow process, and as a group we are wondering if any other members would like to join us with fresh eyes and ideas, especially if you have NHS or medical experience. Also, if anyone has experience of working in schools and giving treatments to pupils or staff, we would welcome them to the group, as this is another area we are looking at. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact me at Look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested. Warm wishes Sharon Penny UKRF Clinical Coordinator

Poem by Nikki Ayton (member of the Sustainable Health Care Group)

“A poetic description of how Reiki and awareness of its intentions can have a positive influence on your life...”

A Fountain of light erupts in white, as my crown chakra begins to ignite… “Just for today”, I say; Love will replace any fear. “Just for today” I say: My path is brilliantly, clear. Reiki balances and unites, It’s a pure ‘energy flow’, to connect, to heal to help create, to ensure you continue to grow . Your potential will rise, your self belief soar; Honour Reiki’s arrival as it knocks at your door,

Do you have time? by Ruthie Moriarty & Alan Sanson

In this article we are considering how the Distance Symbol and intention have the ability to send Reiki through time. So, how do we feel that works, because we know from practice it does? Time is often defined in a linear fashion – events progressing from the past, to the present and on to the future. We can even describe certain things as timeless: a classic trenchcoat or a beautiful piece of music, as they are as fresh today (and into the future) as they were when they were first conceived. We break linear time into parts that are easily grasped by our human brains… seconds, hours, days and yet, the more we focus on time, the more it slips away from us. We can’t see it, we can’t touch it, we just feel it passes. The linear concept of time doesn’t seem to help when we look to understand how we send Reiki through time. For that we have to seek beyond the human “invention” of time. Did you know that before the Big Bang the theory goes that there was no space, no time? Yes really – check the Science Daily link at the end of this article for lots more information on that!

A different concept of time that may help us to gain understanding about how we send Reiki “backwards and forwards” is non-linear time, where all events happen in the same space at the same time; where every choice that we make (and are constantly making) from an almost infinite number of possible choices, determines what event follows. And then the next choice and so on. Fortunately, our brains filter all other realities to stop us becoming confused, as there is only so much a human brain can focus on. Maybe we came here as humans to experience linear reality, yet our spiritual self knows this is an illusion and that non-linear time exists in our other higher-level dimensions, in “soul time”, which can never be measured nor rushed (Gray). “Time is a very important component of 3D reality, but it is an illusion that doesn’t exist in any other dimension. Time is a series of “now moments” that you string together to call Time” (W Kennedy – Big Picture Questions) [3D in this quote refers to the 3rd Dimension of living on Earth]

REIKI WORLD This sphere models how our choices at particular moments can lead to almost infinite outcomes (Researchgate). In embracing the idea of non-linear time, we can set our Reiki intention to send healing to anything, anyone, anywhere in any time period, only being limited by our mindset. Yet, perhaps fortunately, even without knowing anything about the science, we know Reiki will flow where it needs to, as it knows far better than us so, ultimately, all we really need is our intention and to trust the energies. Sending Reiki to the past we know can help to clear out traumas and stuck energy that still affect us in the now. A personal example was when Ruthie had a heart operation a number of years ago. Somehow she had not been prepared that she would be awake throughout and the whole thing was deeply traumatic. Despite a positive outcome, she carried the fear of those few hours until she decided to send Reiki back to that moment, with the intention for her to know the procedure was going to be completely successful and she would be healthy and well as a result. The fear in the now melted away and the terror of the memory was released from her physical, mental and emotional bodies. Reiki changed her perception, not the event and the healing energies of Reiki helped to reset and rewrite her memory, as well as her current and ongoing choices. Photo to the right is Ruthie just after her post op Reiki healing session – the healing for all to see and feel. The movie we offer you is also in the spirit of time and in its beauty whatever the stage of the circle of life. The natural and human world have cycles and much focus (and indeed the label of beauty) is often placed upon the young, fresh and vibrant. We feel strongly that we too often ignore the beauty that comes as the cycle continues, that the linear can exist in harmony with the non-linear and that remaining in the present wherever we are in the circle of life is our greatest power. It is different to other movies we have shared. We hope you are In-Joy and in the moment as you watch the Beauty of Time...

Namaste – we are all one and one with the Universe. Ruthie Moriarty & Alan Sanson UKRF Members

Japanese Winter Traditions & Rituals Japan embraces the beauty and tranquility of winter with a host of unique traditions and rituals that reflect the season’s transformative power. As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, Japanese culture embraces the quietude of winter, finding harmony in the stillness and hidden rejuvenation taking place.

Tōji: A Festival of Light and Prayer

Held annually from December 14th to 16th, the Tōji Festival at the Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto is a spectacular display of light and prayer. Over 100,000 oil lamps illuminate the temple grounds, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that draws visitors from all over Japan. The festival coincides with the Setsubun tradition of warding off evil spirits, adding a layer of spiritual significance to the event.

Oshogatsu: Celebrating the New Year

Oshogatsu, the Japanese New Year celebration, is a time for family gatherings, traditional rituals, and renewed hope for the year ahead. On New Year’s Eve, families gather to eat toshikoshi soba, long noodles symbolizing longevity, and watch the first sunrise of the year, known as hatsuhinode, believing it brings good luck for the coming months.

Kotatsu: Warmth and Comfort in Winter Homes

Kotatsu, a low-lying table with a heated quilt covering it, is a quintessential part of Japanese winter culture. Families gather around the kotatsu for warmth and companionship, sharing meals, playing games, and enjoying the cozy atmosphere. The kotatsu represents the warmth and togetherness that characterise winter in Japan. These traditions and rituals reflect Japan’s deep appreciation for the beauty and significance of winter and they embody a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Gedoku Chiryo Ho (Detoxification Technique) by Giancarlo Serra Gedoku Chiryo Ho is a technique used to effect detoxification/purification on various levels. It can also assist in strengthening the connection with one’s ‘True Self’. This technique can be offered to your client as part of a Reiki treatment, it can be incorporated in your self-treatment or used as a stand-alone practice. Please follow these steps if you are treating a client: ● Rest your hands, palms down, on your thighs. ● Close your eyes and ‘hara-centre’ yourself: focus your awareness in your seika tanden. ● For a few moments, simply ‘be’ – silently and restfully ‘watching the breath’: loosely focussing on the natural rhythms of your breathing. ● Let yourself ‘see‘ and feel the Reiki pervading and permeating your entire being, aware that you are oneness. ● Perform gassho rei and make a silent statement of intent that you are beginning the session. ● Whilst the client can be lying down for this treatment, it will be generally far easier to administer if they are sitting upright on a chair. ● Place your left hand on their tanden area, and place your right hand on their lower back at about the same level as the hand on their tanden. ● Be aware of the Reiki flow beneath your hands. You may silently affirm the desire that all toxins be – gently – cleared from the client. ● Let the Reiki flow. ‘See‘ and feel the Reiki flow. Be in the experience. ● Stay with it as long as you intuit is appropriate. ● When you recognise that enough has been achieved for the current session, withdraw your hands from the client. ● Manifest kansha – gratitude – for having been granted this opportunity to assist your client to heal themself. ● To complete the procedure, perform gassho rei. You can of course also self-treat with Gendoku Chiryo Ho, by placing the right hand on your forehead. Giancarlo Serra UKRF Member, Master Teacher 28 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

The Reiki Principles The UK Reiki Federation prides itself on working to these principles and values.

The Reiki Principles To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...

‘The secret method of inviting good fortune. The marvellous medicine for all sickness.’ sickness.’ Just for today: Do not anger Do not worry Be grateful Work with diligence Be kind to others Every morning and every night sit in Gassho (palms placed together) and speak these words out loud in your heart - Mikao Usui REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF 29

Organic beauty by Jo Fellows

Wellbeing expert Jo Fellows reminds us to be kinder to the Earth, and your skin. Making healthy choices about skin care and cosmetic products is just as important to our wellbeing, and the wellbeing of our planet, as the choices we make about the food and everything else we consume. Our skin acts as a sponge, absorbing 60% of all the chemicals we apply, which then enter the bloodstream and are absorbed by certain organs. Unfortunately, many mass-produced beauty products are loaded with chemical-heavy, synthetic ingredients – such as phthalates, toluene, parabens (hormone-disrupting preservatives) and formaldehyde – many of which harm our planet

and are of questionable benefit to our health. This becomes even more worrying when we realise that the average women absorbs 14kg of moisturising ingredients into her bloodstream over 60 years. So, do we have to embrace our bare face as it is and never enjoy moisturiser or wear cosmetics again? Not at all. There’s a significant movement among cosmetics and skincare companies to create products with natural, organic ingredients that will help make you look and feel just as good as those made from synthetic ingredients, but without harming the planet.

Natural ingredients If you want to be kinder to our planet, using skin care products with natural ingredients is a good place to start. This is because whenever we use skin care or make-up products, we’re going to wash them off within a few hours. When you wash away truly natural, organic ingredients, you’re not introducing anything harmful back into the ecosystem. A ‘natural’ skincare product can be defined as something that is derived from plant, mineral or animal by-product. However, do take care, because brands can use this term on their product labels as a marketing tactic since there’s no governing body that’s laid down the guidelines to specify a product as ‘natural’. Organic beauty products have to follow much stricter guidelines. The term ‘organic’ refers to how an ingredient is farmed – it must be prepared and grown without artificial pesticides, chemical fertilizers, GMOs or sulphates/parabens. Organic farms are one of the most environmentally, socially and economically sustainable methods of production. They might, for example, use crop rotation, animal and plant manures and hand weeding to maintain and grow produce. A real win for our environment. I would suggest that we consider taking the precautionary approach and opt for organic. The skin is our biggest organ and since it’s porous anything applied to it is absorbed into our bloodstream and lymphatic system. 30 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

COSMOS certified

Eco-conscious companies should also be more conscious of how they package their products too, veering away from excessive packaging and using more recycled/reusable material as well, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.

The most well-known and highly regarded independent certifier of organic products in the UK is the Soil Association. Typically, their certification is used for produce. However, the Soil Association has teamed up with four other EU partners (BDIH, Cosmebio, Ecocert and ICEA) to develop a unified internationally recognised standard known as the Cosmetics Organic and Natural Standard (COSMOS) to ensure that beauty products meet the standards they claim to.

So, why not consider switching to products that use natural ingredients and sustainable practices. You’ll be choosing to avoid toxic chemicals and giving the environment a helping hand. You’ll also be saying no to animal cruelty and supporting progressive companies trying to do the right thing. Your skin will thank you, and so will our planet.

All COSMOS Organic-approved products have 95% organic ingredients and no genetically modified (GMOs) ingredients, use only natural colour and fragrance, traceable and sustainably-sourced ingredients and are never tested on animals. They must also use a manufacturing process that minimises the environmental impact and creation of waste.

Beauty tips to be more sustainable • • • • • • • • •

Look for the COSMOS logo to ensure that your beauty products reach the highest organic standards Read the labels and don’t buy products with toxic and harmful chemicals Choose products that feature the leaping bunny logo to guarantee they’re cruelty-free Look for the recyclable logo to be sure that the packaging can be recycled Switch to solid soaps and shampoos to reduce waste Go package-free with refillable products Use reusable cloths (such as a flannel) for removing makeup - face-wipes can take 100 years to break-down in landfill! Invest in a bathroom recycling bin Go makeup-free
