NCFE Apprenticeships

NCFE Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship contains several qualifications and elements. This section includes a summary of the main areas included within an Apprenticeship.

Knowledge Based Qualifications (KBQ) Apprenticeships may contain an individual Knowledge Based Qualification (also referred to as a Technical Certificate or Technical Knowledge Qualification). Sometimes an Apprenticeship may have one Combined Qualification which makes up both the Knowledge and Competence Based Qualification requirements.

Competence Based Qualification (CBQ) These qualifications are designed to assess the Apprentice’s competence within the sector or job role. Assessment is carried out at the centre and in the workplace. Sometimes an Apprenticeship may have one Combined Qualification (CQ) which makes up both the Knowledge (KBQ) and Competence Based Qualification (CBQ) requirements.

Additional Employer Requirements (AER)

s t n e n o p m o C ip h s e Apprentic Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) The course of training in ERR must be designed so that the Apprentice knows and understands the range of employer and employee statutory rights and responsibilities under Employment Law and that employment rights can be affected by other legislation as well. This element of the framework can be covered within the Knowledge or Competence element of the framework but may also be a specific qualification within the NCFE Apprenticeship. It may also be covered via a workbook available from the relevant Sector Skills Council or Standard Setting Body.

Functional Skills The minimum requirement for Functional Skills in Apprenticeships is English and Mathematics at Level 1 for Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeships and Level 2 for an Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship. For some Apprenticeships, completion of an ICT Functional Skill qualification at an Intermediate or Advanced level may also be a requirement.

These qualifications aren’t funded and usually cover training that’s specific to the area of work eg First Aid or Health and Safety.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Frameworks must specify the outcomes which an Apprentice is to achieve in the 6 PLTS listed below and how they’re to be evidenced. Achievement of PLTS must be based on evidence that’s subject to quality assurance. The 6 outcomes are based around the skills needed for success and learning in life. Many of our qualifications are already mapped to the 6 PLTS. The 6 PLTS are: • Independent enquirers • Creative thinkers • Reflective learners

• Team workers • Self managers • Effective participants.

For more information about the 6 PLTS and their outcomes please read the individual sector framework documents at www.afo.sscalliance.org

A selection of NCFE Business Administration qualifications also have an optional ERR qualification as an alternative to the other options. Please see the individual Business Administration pages for more information.

Their success, is your success, is our success.

NCFE Apprenticeships

NCFE Progression to Apprenticeships The chance to develop vital skills and experience before starting an Apprenticeship can give prospective Apprentices a real head start. The National Apprenticeship’s Access to Apprenticeship programme and the Sector Skills Council’s Pre-Apprenticeship developments highlight the importance of preparing learners for their Apprenticeship. ‘NCFE Progression to Apprenticeship’ qualifications are those we’ve highlighted which could be delivered to support learners and help equip them to make the most of their Apprenticeship right from the start. By studying the right qualifications before they start the full Apprenticeship, learners are more confident and better prepared for their chosen Apprenticeship study route. They can gain knowledge in a range of relevant areas such as:

• understanding the workplace • gaining valuable work experience • preparing for study • developing a wider skills base.

Their success, is your success, is our success.

NCFE Apprenticeships

We can work flexibly with you to develop your own ‘Progression to Apprenticeship’ package so that you can support your learners in the way you feel best.

Our range of qualifications include:

• Developing Effective Thinking Skills

• Personal and Social Development

• Learning to Learn

• Job Search and Interview Skills

• Developing Skills for the Workplace

• Employability Skills

• Occupational Studies

• Enterprise Skills

We also have a wide selection of Foundation Learning qualifications. These qualifications aim to raise and support engagement, participation, achievement and progression through Entry Level and Level 1 and onto further education programmes such as NCFE Apprenticeships. Please visit www.ncfe.org.uk/Qualifications/FoundationLearning.aspx for more information. We also offer the full suite of Functional Skills Qualifications at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 in English, Mathematics and ICT. Please see the back page for more information or visit www.ncfe.org.uk/FunctionalSkills.aspx. For full details of all qualifications that could support your Apprenticeship programmes, please visit the Apprenticeship section on our website or use our ‘Qual and Unit Finder’ at www.ncfe.org.uk. What next and getting started with NCFE Working with NCFE and the Sector Skills Councils Firstly you need to identify the Apprenticeship programme you’d like to offer, then contact the relevant Sector Skills Council to register your learners onto the Apprenticeship. Secondly, contact NCFE and register your learners with us. Once each qualification is complete, contact NCFE and register your learners to claim the qualification certificate. The certificate for the Apprenticeship is then claimed from the Sector Skills Council by you. Don’t forget to check all qualification entry requirements before registering candidates.

Getting started with NCFE couldn’t be easier.

Already run NCFE qualifications? • Complete the ‘application to offer additional products’ form and send it to your Centre Support Contact. You’ll then be automatically approved to start running the qualifications you’ve requested. It’s as easy as that.

Not already approved by NCFE? Not a problem! • Complete the ‘application to become an approved centre’ form. • If you’re currently approved by another recognised Awarding Organisation we probably won’t even need to carry out an approval visit. • Visit our website to see more information on our approval fees and how to get started or give us a call and we’ll advise you. You can access both application forms at www.ncfe.org.uk.

NCFE Portal Don’t forget, that once you’re up and running, the NCFE Portal makes it easy for you to track and manage your NCFE Apprenticeship related qualifications online. The NCFE Portal provides a great way to monitor and track the progress of students against individual qualifications, meaning less paperwork and hassle for you.

Apprenticeship Funding This year, NCFE is pleased to sponsor ‘The Complete Guide to Funding Apprenticeships’. Published by Lsect, the guide includes funding examples for every Apprenticeship Framework and level in England. Visit www.fundingguide.co.uk for more information.
