0- Abstract

In this contest of Performance Architecture, which the main objective is a temporary urban intervention in Guimarães 2012 (European Capital of Culture). Our goal is to create a temporary structure the “Battlefield” that when placed in a public space favors it and at the same time reflects what happened there a long time ago. So our project is the construction of a battlefield, which in this case will be represented by a kind of “board game”. The objective of this project is not to recreate the symbolic battle of Sao Mamede, but the possible end of it, the independence of the county or its junction with the Galicia. The battle of S. Mamede, which the victory of D. Afonso Herriques was important for the foundation of the Portuguese nation and guaranty its independency of the Portucalense county. In the battle they are confronted with the army of D. Afonso Henrriques, against the Galician army, led by Fernao Peres de Trava, and supported by his mother D. Teresa. It was feared the influence of that Galician Count Fenao Peres de Trava together with D.Teresa, as they saw in this union a clear attempt to unite the Galicia with Portugal, a contrary position to the Portucalense, who wanted autonomy from Galicia.

1- Introduction

Here follows a group of information that complements the candidature for the contest of Performance Architecture, which the final objective calls to the Battle of S達o Mamede, more precisely the result that this battle could lead to the Portuguese county. In battle they were confronted by the army of King Afonso Henriques, against the Galician army, led by Fernao Peres de Trava, and supported by his mother D. Teresa. He was afraid of the influence that Fern達o Peres de Trava had with D. Teresa, as they saw in this union a clear attempt to unite Galicia and Portugal, a contrary position of the Portucalense, who wanted autonomy for Galicia. This is the battled that we pretend to recreate from the battle field (board game) there will be a path that will finish at the tower. On the battle field (board game) there will be available 2 pieces, one illustrating D. Afonso Herriques and the other D. Teresa and of course the dice. The objective of this project is not to recreate the symbolic battle of Sao Mamede, but the possible end of it, the independence of the county or its junction with the Galicia. This piece will be an interactive installation with the public. The landscape architecture is essentially an art and who practice it is an artist, so in this training area it should be develop a sense of proportion and equilibrium that are followed by the creativity of the beauty. To understand the landscape is indispensable to be able to act on it, and in that understanding they have to understand the relationship between the different elements that are composed

and their behavior. This is undoubtedly the main point of this project. But Professor Caldeira Cabral defends that the modeling of the landscape by humans should be done, given the social reality, the cultural heritage received and thinking about the future. These are undoubtedly the three points that most identify this project. “The landscape architecture is the art of sorting the exterior space to man.”

2- Conceptual description Normally referred to as the cradle of nationality, the city of Guimarães has characteristics that distinguish it from other Portuguese cities and it is put in a outstanding place in the history of Portugal. There happened the battle of S. Mamede, whose victory was earned by D. In battle they were confronted by the army of King Afonso Henriques, against the Galician army, led by Fernao Peres de Trava, and supported by his mother D. Teresa. He was afraid of the influence that Fernão Peres de Trava had with D. Teresa, as they saw in this union a clear attempt to unite Galicia and Portugal, a contrary position of the Portucalense, who wanted autonomy for Galicia.

In this contest of Performance Architecture, which the main objective is a temporary urban intervention in Guimarães 2012 (European Capital of Culture). So our project consist in the construction of a battle field, that in this case is going to be represented by a kind of “board game”, there will be a path that will finish at the tower. On the battle field (board game) ) there will be available 2 pieces, one illustrating D. Afonso Herriques and the other D. Teresa and of course the dice. The objective of this project is not to recreate the symbolic battle of Sao Mamede, but the possible end of it, the independence of the county or its junction with the Galicia. This piece wants to be an interactive installation with the public because they are the integrant part of this works, because they are going to move the pieces around and throw the dice that will give them a number for them to move forward and each player should move its piece. The final goal of the game is to raise the flag corresponding to your character, D. Afonso Henriques or D. Teresa, with the “battle” there are two possible results the independence of the county or its union with the Galiza. The pieces move on the territory of Portugal corresponding to the number that you get on the dice, but along the way there are houses that don´t have pleasant surprises, when the pieces are together in the same house the first one to arrive wins, the other has to go back two houses. The game ends when someone reaches the tower first and raises the flag corresponding to your character.

3- Description of the implementation of the project To implement the project is necessary, first to build a wooden structure in 12 meters long and 7 meters wide and the height depending on the level curves present in the plant. After this structure is made it is necessary to fill it with sand to create the volume present in the platform, then we mark the houses of the game each with 0.70 meters by 0.70 meters for a total of 28 houses and then fill them with cement and immediately place the stones, in this case pebbles, natural color or painted according to the color of the house. Then, after the tower is built and placed in its place, it will be built in wood and then painted to give an appearance of stone. The electrical installations, it’s only placed after all of it is finished and after the grass roll is installed by rolling it over the sand that is still visible.

Someone from Guimar達es City Hall will be responsible for cleaning the garbage that will accumulate in the space on the structure two times a week and also clean the pieces of the game.
