LAGUNA BEACH MUSIC FESTIVAL SUPPORT US ORANGE COUNTY YOUTH SYMPHONY MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER PRICES AND VENUES

Welcome to the 2019-20 season! The Philharmonic Society prides itself on presenting the world’s greatest artists to Orange County, and this season is no exception. As I begin my second full season with the Philharmonic Society, I’m thrilled to share our outstanding lineup, including the launch of Beethoven@250, a celebration of the famed composer’s 250th birthday, which will serve as a focal point for this and next season. I’m excited we’ll be hearing five Beethoven symphonies this spring, including the famous Fifth Symphony with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Joshua Bell leading from the first desk; and we will present a program featuring my great friends at the San Diego Symphony, with their newly appointed principal guest conductor, Edo de Waart. They will bring a program that includes two of my favorite Beethoven Symphonies: the Fourth, and the beautiful Pastoral Symphony, his Sixth.

We also have a stunning line-up of pianists, among them Yuja Wang, Emanuel Ax, Nelson Freire, and Daniil Trifonov. Other guests on our incredible stage include conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen, newly appointed music director of the San Francisco Symphony; Lahav Shani, incoming music director for the Israel Philharmonic; and the incomparable Pinchas Zukerman, a true master of our time.

Superstar soloists include American soprano and opera favorite Renée Fleming, and the musical star of the Royal Wedding: cellist Sheku-Kanneh Mason! In February, violinist Ray Chen joins us as Artistic Director for the 2020 Laguna Beach Music Festival where he will curate and perform in three separate programs!

There is so much more to share in this exciting season, including a world premiere orchestral work by composer Derrick Spiva, the West Coast premiere of a new piano trio by Conrad Tao, exclusive Southern California appearances, and amazing collaborations featuring today’s most celebrated classical artists. Don’t miss your chance to hear these amazing musical events on one of the world’s most beautiful stages! I look forward to seeing you this season, and experiencing these fantastic concerts with you as we enjoy the world’s finest here in Orange County.

Tommy Phillips President and Artistic Director

In 2020, the world celebrates the 250th birthday of one of the most influential composers of all time: Ludwig van Beethoven, whose large body of compositions comprises more than 650 works. Among his most famous masterpieces include his iconic nine symphonies, five piano concertos, a violin concerto, 16 string quartets, 32 piano sonatas, the opera Fidelio, and the Missa Solemnis.

Spanning all of 2020, BEETHOVEN@250 will showcase all nine symphonies, as well as sonatas, concerti, and chamber works. This season features performances of Symphonies Nos. 3 (“Eroica”), 4, 5, 6 (“Pastoral”), and 7; the beloved Egmont Overture; the “Emperor” Piano Concerto; the three Op. 2 piano sonatas; the Op. 131 string quartet and other works with artists such as Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Edo de Waart and the San Diego Symphony, the Danish String Quartet, pianist Emanuel Ax, and many others. Grammy-winning violinist Midori and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet also join the festivities with the exclusive U.S. engagement of their complete cycle of the Beethoven violin sonatas.
