18 19 season

WELCOME Welcome to the 2018-19 SEASON! We have some incredible artists and projects in store for you. The world’s great performers love to come to Orange County, not only because of the distinction of the Philharmonic Society’s history, but also because of the outstanding venues where we present our concerts. They truly are world-class.

This season, I’m excited to share that we’ll have an ORCHESTRA RESIDENCY with the legendary CZECH PHILHARMONIC, led by their new chief conductor and music director, Semyon Bychkov, joined by two stellar soloists: Alisa Weilerstein and Kirill Gerstein. We also have a stunning line-up of pianists, among them MURRAY PERAHIA, ANDRÁS SCHIFF, and JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET, and Philharmonic Society debuts from Cliburn competition medalist BEATRICE RANA and Tchaikovsky competition medalist GEORGE LI.

We also have some amazing special projects, including violinist ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER with a hand-picked ensemble drawn from the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, violinist JOSHUA BELL in a stellar trio concert with pianist JEREMY DENK and cellist STEVEN ISSERLIS, violin legend ITZHAK PERLMAN exploring the roots of klezmer music in Eastern Europe, and there’s so much more… Enjoy your 2018-19 season!

ORCHESTRA RESIDENCY Nov 6-8 2018

CZECH PHILHARMONIC Since it played its first concert under the baton of Antonín Dvořák in 1896, the CZECH PHILHARMONIC has ranked among the world’s great orchestras. This season, we’re proud to welcome them to Orange County for a special TWO-CONCERT RESIDENCY celebrating the musical heritage of the orchestra and their new chief conductor and music director, SEMYON BYCHKOV. In two programs combining the orchestra’s Dvořák legacy and Bychkov’s passion for his fellow Russian, Tchaikovsky, the orchestra will survey symphonic and concerto masterpieces by these composers. Cellist ALISA WEILERSTEIN and pianist KIRILL GERSTEIN join them for two all-time favorites, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The orchestra will also engage with our Orange County community during their stay, providing masterclasses and special performances in university, high school, and community settings. THE DRS. PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY’S

YOUTH MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS Enriching the lives of youth through music education is integral to our mission We reach more than 160,000 K-12 STUDENTS EACH YEAR through an extensive series of outstanding musical and educationally valuable programs held at venues in the community and in schools, provided FREE OF CHARGE. These award-winning programs for elementary, middle, and high school students are made possible through the generosity of our volunteers, The Committees of the Philharmonic Society, sponsors, and contributors. Visit us online at PhilharmonicSociety.org/Education. For information about Education Programs, contact Nancy Warzer-Brady, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement, at 949.553.2422, ext. 237, or Nancy@PhilharmonicSociety.org

GET INVOLVED — BECOME A VOLUNTEER We need your hands-on involvement and support to continue and to EXPAND OUR PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH. With the decline of the arts in the schools, our mission is critical! Our offerings introduce youth to the JOY OF MUSIC and INSPIRE them to play an instrument, expand their imaginations, connect to classroom curriculum, and stimulate learning at all levels. To join a Committee, or for more information on volunteering, please contact Eli Peterson, Director of Volunteer Services, at 949.553.2422, ext. 222, or Eli@PhilharmonicSociety.org

Thank you for inspiring me to learn more complicated and challenging music to play on my violin. Where words fail, music speaks! Please don’t stop the music!”
