The  greatest  orchestras.  The  greatest  artists.  World-class  venues.  We really do have it all in Orange County when it comes to the performing arts.  And  we  here  at  the  Philharmonic  Society  are  proud  to  offer  our 63rd  season  of  incredible,  unparalleled  musical  experiences.  As  you dive into this brochure, you’ll see a succession of ensembles, soloists, and  projects  that  you  won’t  find  anywhere  outside  of  a  handful  of  the  world’s  cultural  capitals.  And  you’re  part  of  making  that  happen. Artists  love  you,  our  audience,  and  your  warm  response  and  deep appreciation for what they do makes them want to be here, in Orange County, on our stages. I’m incredibly proud of the season we’ve assembled for you. It deepens our  commitment  to  the  world’s  leading  orchestras  and  soloists.  It strengthens  our  celebration  of  cutting-edge  multidisciplinary  work  and our promise to bring new experiences of the highest caliber to you, our  audience.  Our  music  is  for  all  of  Orange  County,  through  our  programing  at  Segerstrom  Center  for  the  Arts,  Musco  Center  for  the Arts,  Laguna  Beach  Music  Festival,  and  Irvine  Barclay  Theatre,  and through our youth music programs, which reach 160,000 students each year in our community and are offered free of charge. But it all starts with you. You, our audience, make everything in these pages possible, and I can’t wait to welcome you to the 2017-18 season and  share  each  and  every  one  of  these  unforgettable  musical  experiences with you.

ROBERT, CLaRa, and JOHannES The opening night program delves deep into one of the most fruitful musical relationships of all time, that between Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The program features vocal and instrumental pieces by Bach and the Schumanns, as well as Brahms’ irresistibly charming set of liebeslieder Walzer (“love-song Waltzes”), Op. 52, for vocal quartet and piano four-hands. THE aMERiCan SpiRiT In his final program, Nicholas Phan and special guests take us on a musical road trip through the great American songbook, with a few side excursions into songs influenced by our great musical traditions. The program features everything from Bernstein and Copland to Broadway, Joan Baez, and lennon and mcCartney.

diaRiES: THE aRT Of THE COnfESSiOnaL many composers have turned to diaries for texts for some of their most profound and personal utterances. This evening explores that tradition, culminating in a world-premiere multimedia event built around leoš Janáček’s powerful diary of One Who disappeared, with its exploration of the enduring power of love.

f o r w a r d CAMPAIGN We  are  undertaking  the  Philharmonic  Forward  Campaign  to  expand  on  the  world-class programming  that  has  made  the  Philharmonic  Society  such  a  vital  part  of  the  cultural  life  of  Orange  County.  The  campaign  has  an  overall  goal  of  $10  million:  $8  million  in endowment investments,  ensuring the long-term financial foundation of the Society, and $2 million in capital funding to preserve the Society’s long-term financial health. The  campaign  will  bolster  our  broad  mission  of  supporting  the  tradition  of  Western  classical  music  while  at  the  same  time  allowing  the  Society  to  present  diverse  music  from emerging artists. It will help us engage K-12 and college students through music education programs, creating a new generation of people who value great music.  Ultimately, this comprehensive fundraising  effort will allow us to reach even more people in our burgeoning region, and provide them with new and immensely satisfying musical experiences that will endure throughout their lifetimes. For more information, please contact Ron Dufault, VP of Development, at 949.553.2422, ext. 202, or email Ron@PhilharmonicSociety.org.
