SOLID EDGE COURSE On the 15th and 16th of February, several members of PSEM travelled to Leiria to participate in a Solid Edge course supplied by CADFLOW in the facilities of the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. Focused mainl y on advanced software themes such as Synchronous Te c h n o l o g y, Surfaces and Generative Design, the students were able to better use the CAD (computer-aided design) they work on dail y, since the software is the base of all the car design process. Therefore, it is of the highest order that the students are able to implement the program to the best of their abilities. To do so, PSEM was also taught all the existent functionalities in Solid Edge, combining the speed and simplicity of direct modelling with the flexibility and control of parameter design.

CORDINATOR’S REMARK The members of PSEM are at a constant learning state so they can renew and evolve the prototypes they develop every season. Although this learning ability is mostly autonomous, the team tries to expand its horizons when it comes to the know-how and the theoretical abilities by participating in courses beyond the degree the students enroll in. Alas, last month several PSEM members have participated in the Conventional Maquination Course at CENFIM and in a Solid Edge course provided by Siemens PLM Academy at Instituto Politécnico de Leiria.

OUR SPONSORS NORTH TOUR

interest to keep supporting our project, which are excellent news for PSEM. We also visited Adira and Rui Matias, 2 new companies we are looking forward to work with.

BOSCH From the 18 th to the 20 th of February, 5 members from PSEM have been in the North of Portugal visiting a total of nine companies. The purpose of this trip was to strengthen ties between our sponsors and the team, taking the opportunity to keep our sponsors up-to-date on the ideas we are working on for the GP17.EVO. Our sponsors Metalotrofa, TST Trofa, Sociedade Comercial do Vouga, Packworks, IrmĂŁos Rodrigues, Neves & Neves and AMG were satisfied with the work developed by our team and, when we presented them our plans for the present season and the manufacturing of our prototype, they have shown

Bosch is one of our most recent partners. They helped us by giving us the tools that will be indispensable for the conclusion of the next GP17 iteration. The Bosch Group is a leading global supplier of technology and services. Its operations are divided into four business sectors: Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology.

WE THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT GIVEN MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | PSEM | MARCH 2018

MORE NEWS... CONVENTIONAL MACHINING COURSE In the week of February 5th to 9th, part of the team participated in a Conventional Machining Course at CENFIM. The course had a total duration of 25 hours, that is, 5 hours a day. The main objective of this course was to make the members of PSEM more sensitive to working with lathe and milling machines, which are essential in the development of our prototypes.

GP17 TEST RUN On February 8th, PSEM tested once again the current GP17 prototype in the area surrounding the Main Building in Instituto Superior TĂŠcnico. The main purpose of the test was to record the performance of the car during one hour (the battery life) with the current model.

CRIB PROJECT To comply with the rules, the cradle had to undergo some changes. For this, we designed new surfaces on Solid Edge, which resulted in a mold that was machined in polystyrene and then produced in carbon. To produce the crib we resorted to the process of hand lay up, in which the carbon skins were arranged in the mold and then resin was applied manually.

It was the new driver’s first contact with the car, with a few drizzles but promising results in terms of lap times. The next tests will ideally be performed on a track, in conditions closer to those expected in the race.

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM INTERVIEW

“ THEREFORE BEING PART OF PSEM, MADE A LOT OF SENSE. ”

Diogo started by joining the M e c h a n i c a l P ro j e c t te a m , but eventuall y settled on the Communication team, developing many soft skills and having more recently helped developing PSEM’s new website.

DIOGO FERREIRA Diogo Ferreira is a 3rd year student of Aerospace Engineering and a member of PSEM for two years now. When questioned as to why he wanted to join the team, Diogo says that he has always been interested in the automotive industry and, humorously, adds that he used to watch a lot of “Top Gear” and “Wheeler Dealers”. Therefore, being part of PSEM made a lot of sense.

As for the expectations regarding the performance of the team for this year, he was very optimistic. He feels the team is very focused and that the GP17 is a great foundation on which to build on for this season. Regarding his professional future, Diogo confesses that he does not have any definitive plans yet, but says he would like to start working in Portugal and then consider foreign proposals.
