INTRODUCTION TO

FRANCHISING Franchising has long been a reliable route to becoming your own boss. It famously provides the independence craved by so many budding businesspeople, while offering a real support network that enables you to run your business with confidence.

Taking on a franchise means taking advantage of a proven business model, a brand that is prevalent in its marketplace and trusted by consumers. As such, franchising is often described as ‘going into business for yourself, but not by yourself’. One of the most appealing parts of starting a franchise is the fact that anyone has the capability to run one. If you have the time, passion and drive, you can make a success out of a franchise.

Franchise investment levels can be broken down into lower-level investment (up to £10,000), mid level (up to 50,000), and high-level (over £50,000). There may also be additional costs attached such as business premises, equipment etc. The next step is to find the actual brand or concept most suited to you, which can be deduced through research and comparison here at The Franchise Show.

HOW CAN THE FRANCHISE SHOW HELP ME? Quite simply, The Franchise Show can offer everything you need to know about franchising, regardless of if you’re just starting out as a first-time franchisee, looking at taking on multiple franchise units, taking on a Master Franchise for a region or a country, or even planning to expand your own business via franchising. Over 100 of the world’s best brands and concepts will be exhibiting at The Franchise Show, allowing you the chance to talk face-to-face with franchisees and franchisors, and ascertain the type of franchise that is right for you. With last February’s event attracting a huge number of visitors, The Franchise Show is again expecting more of the same this September, cementing it as one of the country’s largest franchising events. And with promotion in 27 different countries, The Franchise Show has gained a strong presence on the international business event stage. The event will bring together an unrivalled seminar schedule, workshops from industry leaders, and advice from franchising experts from the UK, US and beyond. It will boast opportunities for 1-2-1 advice and offer visitors a chance to hear ‘from the horse’s mouth’ what makes for a successful franchise. Unlike traditional business exhibitions, The Franchise Show is far from being an onslaught of sales pitches. Indeed, we like to think we provide a fair and open environment for potential franchisees to make an informed decision.

Q&A

With hundreds of exhibitors and dozens of seminars there is so much to see and so you need to think carefully about how to manage your visit to make the most of your valuable time. A little preparation goes a long way when faced with the vast amount of information available at The Franchise Show.

PLAN Make use of The Franchise Show website, the email updates that registered ticket-holders will receive from the show organisers, and the show guide to plan your visit. Calculate how much time you think you will need to fit everything in, then double it. There really is so much to see and do that you might need to consider visiting on both days of the show.

IDENTIFY What do you want from this show? What information or advice do you need? Identify which exhibitors you should visit, which speakers you want to hear and the events you would like to participate in to get the most out of The Franchise Show 2012.

TARGET Once you have identified who you want to see, use the floorplan inside the show guide and plan yourself a route that includes your ‘must see’ stands.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED When planning your trip to the show, leave time for reflection or for unexpected events - don’t be unrealistic about what you can achieve, and don’t be surprised who you may meet. You may end up stumbling across an opportunity that you’ve never considered, that may be perfect for you.

RECORD Don’t forget to take a pen and notepad or your laptop, ipad or smartphone - so that you can make notes at the show.

FOLLOW-UP After the show, take a deep breath. With all the concepts you’ve seen and the experts you’ve heard from, you’re armed with the information to take the next step. Continue your research and get your financing plans together. Seek advice from professionals – for instance, accountants and lawyers, specialise in franchising. Visit and speak with current franchisees and ask the tough questions. Finally, choose a business that fits your lifestyle and your career goals.

THE FRANCHISE SHOW CHECKLIST

Use this checklist to make sure you don’t miss any of the essentials for your visit to The Franchise Show 2012.

WITH

SIMON CHICKEN

Will franchising be your route to becoming your own boss? Franchise Show Event Director, Simon Chicken, spoke to us about why a franchise could suit you.

CAN ANYONE OPERATE A FRANCHISE? WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES IT SUIT? The variety of franchise opportunities on the market means that there will be a franchise to suit everyone’s abilities, interests, lifestyle and financial needs. Many of the same qualities that are necessary to run a business are needed: hard work, determination, attention to detail etc. But when you invest in a franchise, you are investing in a brand and you are investing in a proven business model.

HOW DOES SOMEONE BECOME A FRANCHISEE? Do your research. Work out what you want to be doing, and for how long. 10 years? 20 years? Ask yourself what your skills are, what you enjoy doing and how much money you want to earn. Work out how much money you can afford to invest. Banks like franchising, so you may be able to borrow enough to be able to afford the right franchise for you. Then meet with the companies that interest you, and speak to franchisees already in the network. Lastly, investing in a franchise is up there with buying a house and getting married. Choosing the right one is hugely important so get independent professional advice before signing anything!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A FRANCHISEE? You get all the benefits of being your own boss, but fewer of the worries. When you become a franchisee, you become a business owner. You should work hard to build up that business, but you will have an experienced franchisor to show you how. Remember that you can sell the business when the time is right for you and the franchisor.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE FRANCHISE SHOW? You can expect an unrivalled conference where you can learn absolutely everything you need to know. The variety of franchises on the market, what funding is available the questions to ask, and much much more. And over 100 brands keen to talk to you.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE ATTEND THE FRANCHISE SHOW? People should come to the show to find out about the best franchises looking to recruit in the UK. Come and speak to the franchisors. Remember that you will be working closely with the franchisor so the chemistry needs to be right. By coming to the show, you get to do in one or two days the research that would otherwise take months.

10 REASONS TO BUY A FRANCHISE There are plenty of reasons to consider buying a franchise. Perhaps you’re sick of the 9-5 humdrum of normal working life. Maybe you’ve always had a burning desire to be your own boss. Or you just want to take advantage of a flourishing industry. Whatever your big reason, here are ten more.

03

04

05

01

CORPORATE IMAGE AND BRAND AWARENESS One of the most important parts of a business is the brand. It will be above your door, on your website, in your promotional materials – a part of everything you are. By operating under a trusted brand, you’re already a step ahead of the rest.

02

PROVEN SYSTEM IN PLACE The system you rely on will make or break your business. But if you have a business model that is proven in other areas of the country, or even other countries, you can rest assured it will likely work for you.

06

RELIABLE SUPPORT NETWORK

MARKETING STRATEGY

EASIER TO OBTAIN FINANCING

It is said that being in business can be an isolating experience. But a franchise – though it too needs hard work and long hours – comes with a network of franchisees to advise on the problems you might have, and also give you hints and tips on future business endeavours.

A franchise comes preloaded with marketing strategies, leaving you to get on with making the business successful, not fiddling around with flyers, web banners, and print ads. So when you do buy a franchise model, it will be ready to meet the world from day one.

Half the problem for most start-ups is securing a decent level of funding to get their enterprise off the ground. Although the finance barrier isn’t completely negated with a franchise, it is made an awful lot easier. Banks like franchises – it’s that simple.

Starting your own business is a steep learning curve where you’re often left to your own devices. Not with a franchise – you’ll be comprehensively taught how to manage your team and drive your business in a proven and professional way. You’ll learn new skills, develop existing ones, and teach others.

LOCATION

LOWERED RISK

The success of a business will often depend on its location. A franchise business will normally offer some help in securing the right premises, and even ensure you get the best price possible.

With 90% of UK franchise units profitable, it’s clear that a franchise business is far less of a risk than a traditional start-up business. There are a number of contributing factors; a proven business model; trusted brand; training, etc.

PURCHASING POWER

If businesses came flat-packed, they would probably look a lot like franchises. A bona fide, ready-to-go business in a box. You open it up, assemble its main parts, and kick on. OK it takes a bit of hard work, but the rewards are vast.

Being part of a big brand name will give you some real credence and oomph when sourcing essential products or services to help with your business. You’ll be leveraging the buying power of an entire system, and that will lower costings significantly.

Franchising is generally regarded as a less risky way of setting up in business than if you were to start your own independent business. Although as with any business opportunity there is still risks. It is essential that anyone considering investing in a franchise thoroughly researches the market and takes appropriate proffessional advice. The bank’s franchise departments are able to provide general guidance about franchising opportunities. They will also be able to assist you to carefully assess whether franchising will be the right option for you, what questions you should be asking a franchisor and help you to get your business started. Banks will require a business plan to set up a bank account and consider financial support for your business. Any lender will want you to demonstrate that you understand your chosen market and that you will be able to meet the financial commitment you are taking on. Banks will be able to provide a business plan template detailing what information should be included in the document. Some franchisors will support you

in developing an effective business plan. The business plan should be punchy and a common mistake is to make it too detailed. Ensure that it grabs the bank manager’s interest. Presentation of the plan is important to create a positive impression and you should practice delivery of your plan beforehand so that you come across professionally. Let the bank manager have a copy of your business plan in advance so they can prepare for the meeting. Expect your plan to be challenged and you should be able to answer questions about the operational and financial aspects of your plan. It is often assumed that a business plan is needed just to secure funding. Whilst this is an important benefit of producing a

business plan it can also assist with the management of the business such as monitoring the ongoing performance against the original benchmarks and identifying areas for development. The plan is a working document and should be regularly reviewed and updated as the business develops. When looking to finance your franchise business it is best to approach a franchise specialist bank. The bank’s franchise departments regularly evaluate franchises and monitor the ongoing performance of franchisees. Preferential terms are often available particularly for well established and proven franchise opportunities. The level of finance available from a bank will depend upon the strength of the franchise system as well as your business plan. Typically for well established franchises the bank will lend up to 70% of the total set up costs including working capital. For newer, less proven franchise systems the amount of finance available maybe reduced. The bank will probably require security for the loan which commonly will be a legal charge over a residential property with sufficient equity. Don’t be put off if you haven’t got any security to offer the bank. The Government backed Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme maybe available for those who have a strong business proposal, but who lack security that the banks usually require. Speak to the bank’s Franchise Unit to discuss whether you qualify for finance under this scheme. Advice is also available on other financing options for your business such as Asset Finance, Leasing and Debtor Finance. The bank manager may take a few days to review your plan and financial requirements. They may need to obtain sanction for the requested funds from the bank’s Credit Department. Once the lending has been sanctioned the bank manager should set out in writing the terms of the agreed finance including the costs. If you wish to

It is sensible to have sufficient capital to cover projected expenses for at least six months. Have a contingency reserve fund to fall back on in case the business takes longer to get off the ground that you have anticipated. Banks like franchising as you are investing in a tried, tested and proven business model with initial training and ongoing support from the franchisor. THE SAFEST WAY TO START A BUSINESS JUST GOT SAFER.

FRANCHISE RESALE

We all know that starting a business always carries a risk, whatever your industry, however you start. Buying into a franchise system is seen by many as the safest way to get going in business, but 2/3 of all franchises bought in the last few years were not franchise systems. They were in fact units – operational franchises with premises, a customer base, turnover, and all the rest of it already in place.

New to The Franchise Show this September, The Franchise Resale feature is your chance to get involved and find out more about this route to franchise ownership. You’ll even discover franchise units for sale within every area of the industry – all in one place, ready and waiting for the right entrepreneur to come in and take the reins. Whether you’re considering a future in business for the first time, or you want a straightforward way to expand your portfolio, Franchise Resale should be high on your list of mustattend features this September. In addition to having experts on hand to guide and advise on

the most important issues of the buying and selling process, there will be a chance to take a look at some franchise businesses on offer at the show – all pinned to the giant Franchise Resales wall – where you might find some businesses no longer available as systems, only resales. Put simply, if you’re searching for a franchise, you have to consider a resale. And Franchise Resale is the place to find it. The feature presents an unmissable opportunity to gather contacts, obtain information, and find the franchise to match your ambition and budget.

CONFERENCE Finding the perfect franchise means meticulous research – usually week upon week of it – trawling the Internet and wading through text-heavy hardbacks. We think research should be a little more engaging. A little more time-efficient. Researching your move into franchising should be about discovering the industry from every angle. It should be franchisors and franchisees giving

you the inside track; uncovering opportunities on and off your radar, in sectors you didn’t even know existed. We believe the best research is done by interacting with those who know all about the industry, so we’ve filled our conference

schedule with leading experts, franchisors, and franchisees – all delivering seminars designed to help visitors get straight to the right information quickly and easily.

New to The Franchise Show, our Focus On seminars will offer 30-minute seminars on nearly every franchise area conceivable, helping every type of visitor get exactly what they want. Our extensive programme of seminars

also covers Encouraging Women Into Franchising, Franchise Essentials, and Franchising Your Business.

Save yourself time and money by attending The Franchise Show Conference – it’s your head-start in an industry that has a lot to offer and, after these seminars, little to fear.

FRANCHISING YOUR BUSINESS

The Value of Intellectual Property Did you know, investment in UK businesses protected by Intellectual Property Rights is now worth around £65 Billion per year1? Also, investment by businesses to protect their IP using patents, trademarks, designs and copyright has more than doubled since 19901. This highlights the importance of understanding how a business can and will benefit from IP. There are four main types of IP – which we manage at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO – part of the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills). 1. Patents protect new inventions and covers how things work, what they do, how they do it, what they are made of and how they are made. It gives the owner the right to prevent others from making, using, importing or selling the invention without permission.

3. Registered Designs are a legal right which protects the overall visual appearance of a product in the country or countries you register it. The visual features that form the design include such things as the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture, materials and the ornamentation of the product which give it a unique appearance. 4. Copyright protects many types of work, from music and lyrics to photographs and knitting patterns. Many people think of IP only in relation to inventions and patents, and as a consequence, are unaware of the potential commercial benefits and IP asset protection that can come from registering Trade Marks, Designs and managing their Copyright.

2. Trade marks are a sign (badge of origin) which can distinguish your goods and services from those of your competitors (you may refer to your trade mark as your "brand"). It can be for example words, logos or a combination of both.

PROVEN, ETHICAL AND PROFITABLE PROPERTY BUSINESS PROPERTY: A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY THAT CAN PROVIDE EXCELLENT PENSION PROVISION AND AN INCOME OF £50,000 - £150,000 PER ANNUM WITHIN 2-5 YEARS – WHERE YOU OWN THE ASSETS. Platinum Property Partners (“PPP”) is an established, highly respected and successful property investment franchise that enables its Franchise Partners (PPP’s term for franchisee) to quickly, safely and successfully build UK residential property portfolios as profitably as possible. Launched in 2007 by Founder Steve Bolton, Platinum Property Partners is the world’s first property investment franchise and is also the fastest growing premium franchise in UK history. There are currently over 125 Franchise Partners operating in 75 towns and cities across the UK. The company is an award-winning Landlord, a member of British Franchise Association and the UK’s leading provider in this sector. The tried, tested and proven business model enables PPP Franchise Partners to build property portfolios that achieve an average return on investment of 15%. After paying all costs (mortgage, bills, maintenance and voids), an average property will generate £15,000 gross profit per annum from rental income alone. Platinum Property Partners help people who are frustrated with their current levels of income or pension provision. The tried, tested and proven business model has enabled many people to supplement, and in

some cases replace, their existing income as well as provide for a more secure future. PPP Franchise Partners have purchased over £55 million of investment property since 2007. The business model has been strong enough to not only withstand the global financial downturn but prosper throughout this period. The business model is unique in franchising because it combines high trading profits with appreciating underlying property assets that also provide for future capital growth.

to maximize profitability from day one. The phenomenal success of the PPP franchise has been primarily due to its industry-leading property investment models. These offer a number of diverse property revenue streams that adapt to market changes and ensure financial growth, even during a property market slump. This inspiring presentation puts into words why a property investment franchise makes such a solid business proposition. The success of the PPP business model has enabled our Franchise Partners to purchase over £55 million of investment property in the past 5 years alone. Furthermore it explains how, with the right business model, buy-to-let investing can generate £1000+ pre-tax profit per month, per property.

JANE & SIMON GILLATE

CREATING A PROPERTY PORTFOLIO AFTER REDUNDANCY Creating a property portfolio in excess of a £1million that returns a healthy rental income profit of £135,970 a year sounds too good to be true. But Jane and Simon Gillate are proof indeed that, with the right training and support network, anything is possible. Jane, an ex-Paediatric nurse who has spent the last twenty two years focussing on family life and bringing up the couple’s daughters, and her husband Simon, a Project Risk Consultant in the construction industry, shared a passion for property. Having earned significant equity by buying, redeveloping and adding value to their family homes over two decades, the couple had always considered the possibility of investing in Buy To Let, although a hectic family life and Simon’s career meant they never had the chance to fully investigate what this may entail. Following Simon’s redundancy in 2009, the Gillates felt that it was the right time to research the possibilities surrounding building a passive income from property, both to act as an appreciating asset and ‘nest-egg’ for their children. Their concerns were the diminishing returns on capital they held in savings, and the fact that they had to sell off various assets to sustain an adequate income. Whilst attending the British Franchise Show at Olympia, Jane visited the Platinum Property Partners stand, where she learned about the business model and the opportunities available for Franchise Partners. After reviewing the information she was given, and despite initial scepticism, Jane convinced Simon to attend a Discovery Day to find out more. On the Discovery Day, having met with the Platinum Property Partners team, and also spent time with existing Franchise Partners to learn how they had succeeded by following the business model to create and manage successful property portfolios, Jane and Simon were suitably impressed to attend a Director’s Meeting, at which they then decided to become Franchise Partners in the South East London area. As Jane says, “Even though some friends and family pooh-poohed what Platinum Property Partners were saying was possible, and warned us that we would lose our hard-earned savings, we had seen the proof and met the people. We knew we were making the right decision, so we just went for it.”

Within six months, the couple had purchased three properties, and were managing large-scale redevelopment works to turn the detached houses into luxury accommodation for professional sharers. The majority of bedrooms across all three properties were redesigned to include an en-suite bathroom. Jane and Simon followed PPP’s tried, tested and proven systems which soon led to exceptional demand for their rooms and market leading income profits. Jane and Simon are now advocates of the Platinum Property Partners business model themselves, with Jane in particular keen to share their experience with others. As she says, “We could not have achieved this without Platinum Property Partners. From the first Discovery Day, we felt comfortable that the people we were working with had our best interests at heart, and we were also reassured that the other potential and current Franchise Partners we met were just like Simon and I. We wanted to find something that would use both our skill sets – I have a real interest in interior design and I’d like to think I’m really good with people, whilst Simon is very organised and methodical, along with his background in Construction. The Franchise Opportunity with PPP suited us both, and has given us something to focus on and work at together, whilst also providing us with a good level of income.” Simon Gillate adds, “It’s great to be part of a wider network of likeminded people, and we love the fact that we feel we belong to a ‘little club’ that supports each other.” With further purchases in the pipeline, the Gillates are confident in their financial future, and are delighted that, just this once, they chose to ignore everyone else’s advice. Jane concludes, “It’s a funny thing, but now our friends and family can see how great the Platinum Property Partners model is, they’ve now started to talk about getting involved themselves. I love telling them, ‘I told you so!’”

When the recession bites hard, many organisations are underprepared and begin to struggle with their financial targets. Our network of specialist procurement advisors have helped businesses challenge this worrying trend. Throughout the country, crisis meetings are being held to Discuss how to survive the recession and reduce the impact that any ‘double dip’ may have. Sales teams are under increasing pressure as they are tasked with maximising revenue streams, just so that the business can stave off the threat of making redundancies. In these financially tough times

every penny counts, so imagine if you had the answer to this global epidemic. Across the UK, many organisations are benefitting from the services of ERA franchise partners, who provide a unique business offering where professionally trained consultants are brought in to investigate any ‘profit leaks’ and identify solutions.

FROM RAF TO ERA Franchisee: Glenn Cotter Location: Midlands a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force. ‘I really enjoyed my time in the Royal Air Force, but was after a new challenge where I could use my existing skills and build on them to deliver a better work/ life balance – and with superior financial rewards too.’ ‘When I was looking at Expense Reduction Analysts, I was really nervous as I had no background in procurement or accountancy, which I thought was essential as a franchise owner. It couldn’t really be further from the truth,’ says franchise partner Glenn Cotter. ‘I was able to bring my skills that any person with a strong background could bring, which, when supported by world-leading training, really gave me the strong start I needed.’ Glenn Cotter joined Expense Reduction Analysts in March 2001, having previously been

Training for a six-figure income ‘Expense Reduction Analysts is a fantastic opportunity that provides the autonomy and flexibility to manage my time and my business as I deem best,’ says Glenn. ‘It really is a refreshing change from the military. I am able to manage, control and make the decisions that drive my business forward, but I am never alone; the support, training and advice from Expense Reduction Analysts will always ensure that I have the best opportunity to make a success of my business.’

Roy Bayliss, and Expense Reduction Analysts Franchise Partner since 2010, comments: “We really add value to our clients processes by streamlining

their non-core costs, meaning they benefit from substantial savings and improve the bottom line significantly, without increasing sales targets.”

The changing face of procurement A recent Mckinsey Global Survey revealed that reducing operating costs is top of the agenda for Financial Directors and Chief Financial Officers in the current austere economy. The same survey revealed that many believe that: • •

They are currently not getting the best prices Managing these areas of expense is mission critical for improving their business Lowering costs from suppliers is one of the biggest challenges they currently face within expense management

Additionally, most CFOs feel that procurement is important to finance, but many lack the understanding or know-how

E-mail: franchiseteam@erauk.net

‘I have found that many of my fellow franchise owners demonstrate the same skills,’ continues Glenn, ‘such as having the self-discipline that is required to manage your own business, having the drive and motivation to generate a six-figure income, as well as having a likeable personality and the ability to problem solve.’

‘In summary,’ says Glenn, ‘I really am enjoying the benefits of all my hard work, and I look forward to every day.’

In reality, organisations are aware that reducing their costs is important to improving their bottom line, but as they are not procurement specialists, they are unsure on what to do next. A Cost, Purchase and Supplier Management consultant is able to become a trusted advisor to that organisation, ensuring that savings remain competitive while maintaining supplier relationships. It is this process which makes many clients continue to engage these procurement experts well after the initial contract has been passed. In fact, many clients are realising the value that a trustworthy professional brings to their business with many signing multiple projects across areas of their business ranging from stationery, marketing, fleet,

‘The lifestyle that I aspired to.’ ‘Being your own boss does have its own challenges’, says Expense Reduction Analysts franchisee St John Rowntree, ‘but it also gives me the freedom to choose my hours of work. I’ve been on more holidays since joining Expense Reduction Analysts, including trips to Thailand and the Caribbean; I’ve paid off my mortgage, bought a new Mercedes for cash, and a holiday home too – all within the last seven years.’

insurance and logistics. Simon Perkins, a consultant who became an Expense Reduction Analysts franchise owner in July 2010, says: “The great thing about this business is that we are able to provide savings in over 100 areas of Cost, Purchase and Supplier Management. The experience within our network means that we never have to turn a client away. How many businesses can genuinely say that?” In the current economic climate, the number one challenge that most organisations face is reducing their costs. Businesses are aggressively streamlining core expenditure, yet many of them are still overpaying by as much as 40% on their every day operating costs. By engaging an expert in Cost, Purchase and Supplier Management, businesses are able to improve their bottom line far quicker and easier than increasing their sales, and with a safe pair of hands supporting them along the way.

EXPENSE REDUCTION ANAYLISTS

A rewarding franchise opportunity Glenn says that Expense Reduction Analysts is ‘a really rewarding franchise’. ‘I get to save large companies money, making a difference along the way. I never thought that I would be able to generate a six-figure income, which I have been doing consistently. I guess that is the real strength of the Expense Reduction Analysts franchise – you are expertly trained to become a leading procurement consultant, with the ability to win business and deliver huge savings to your clients.’

to influence it, with many commenting that effective procurement is increasingly becoming a function of the finance department in the same way that sales has become a function of marketing.

‘Prior to joining Expense Reduction Analysts I had been in corporate life for the last 20 years across a range of different roles. I enjoyed a number of them, but this franchise opportunity definitely works well for me, and it gives me the lifestyle that I always wanted.’

Using the franchise network’s expertise The range of expertise within the franchise network means that new opportunities provide a flow of new business. Says Rowntree: ‘Whether it is specialist areas such as fleet and logistics, or something which seems quite simple, like stationery, each

category we analyse has its own unique challenge. Whatever the project happens to be, there is a wide range of expertise within our organisation, so we never have to walk away from new business.’ Rowntree continues: ‘Due to the volume of business we are putting forward, the relationship that we have with suppliers makes my role a lot easier. It gives my customers real value and ultimately helps me to sign more clients. I believe this is unique to Expense Reduction Analysts, as no other cost reduction franchise I’ve encountered has this kind of ability.’

Benefits of being your own boss St John Rowntree enjoys the benefits of being his own boss. ‘Since joining I have, on average, earnings of over £100,000 a year. Last year it was almost £200,000. You certainly get rewarded for the time and effort that you put in, which without doubt was not the case in previous employment. I am delighted that I joined Expense Reduction Analysts and I wouldn’t go back to working for somebody else again.’

In addition, the specialist procurement advisors involved then take the process one step further and actually manage the changeover process, ensuring the transition to the new supplier proceeds without a hitch. The client can rest assured that their procurement is in good hands, without having to invest their own time, allowing them to continue with their busy schedule. In many circumstances, the dedicated consultant is able to identify savings with the current range of suppliers, eliminating the need to change to an alternative service provider. Such is the depth of knowledge and purchasing influence – as a result of the millions of pounds worth of spend already under review – that the procurement expert can make a positive impact to the organisation’s bottom line without jeopardising the quality of service being received.

Virang’s centre, the Beeston Kumon Study Centre, is one of over 640 Kumon Study Centres in the UK, supporting over 66,000 students. Virang became the Instructor at the Beeston Study Centre in February 2012. Reflecting on his journey as a Kumon franchisee so far, Virang says: “The support available with Kumon and knowing that I wouldn’t be on my own in pursuing such a venture was fundamental. With Kumon, a lot of the unknowns with starting up your own

business are taken care of already. I did a lot of research and found that the success rate of Kumon centres was generally very high and the financial rewards are also very good, so the risk level was low. “Merging two passions of mine, working with children and running my own business, is fantastic and seeing the children smiling and full of confidence as a result of studying the Kumon programmes at my centre is an incomparable feeling. Seeing how the programmes transform the lives of young children, not just academically but in all social areas too, is very inspiring.

“As well as word of mouth, I have found many lucrative avenues for marketing my centre and as a result my business has flourished and continues to grow. Being a Kumon franchisee has been everything I hoped it would be.” To find out more about this unique franchise opportunity, visit Kumon Educational on stand 200.

The brothers are now the proud owners of adjoining Go-Kart Party franchises in Devon & Dorset, with third brother, James managing the Dorset franchise. James explains: “I had been living and working in Spain; promoting new residential developments as they became available for sale but had decided to come back to the UK to take a law degree. I had just graduated and was looking for employment when Steven asked me to manage his Go-Kart Party franchise. It is quite a leap from lawyer to running your own business, but I’ve found that my marketing and sales skills, from my time working with overseas properties, the time management and critical thinking skills, I improved during my degree study, have been invaluable.” Both franchises launched and began trading in May 2011. James and Nathan’s time is spent building the business through indoor parties and outdoor events.

party or event and in a market worth an estimated £216 million, the franchise business is the brand leader with low overheads and high earning potential. Nathan investigated the Go-Kart Party opportunity thoroughly and, as the figures and confidence in the business stacked up, his brother Steven became interested in investing too, but he wasn’t looking to leave his job. This is when the third brother James, 32, was brought in to manage Steven’s territory in Dorset.

We’re spending our time promoting the parties and last year, I only had 4 days off during the summer holidays, because of the demand in our areas to have the Go-Karts at events, but the benefits I have gained through working for myself, while under the watchful and supportive eye of my franchisor, are invaluable – and I still had the buzz of starting up on my own!

agency. “My job hadn’t really changed for five years and I was really looking for a new challenge and a change in my life. I really wanted to start my own business but, living in Devon, I wasn’t sure what business would be enjoyable as well as profitable in my area. Go-Kart Party was the only business that excited Nathan, during his visit to the show, although he had spoken to a number which were very good businesses that he could easily have made money with. Nathan, Steven and James are living examples of how a franchise can become a family business. Asked what advice they would give to anyone thinking of buying a franchise they all agree that you must carry out your own checks, seek the right legal advice, organise your financing early on, and work with your franchisor, do not try and reinvent the wheel. The franchisor has a proven business model that works IF you follow their advice.

THIS BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT PEOPLE “I became a thebestof franchisee in early 2006 and it has given me the opportunity to build a very significant business with high levels of residual income, which is great.

If you visit Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, a small market town with a population of just over 20,000, you can’t miss thebestof Bromsgrove. Ian Prowse, who has been running the franchise since 2005, has all of the main businesses in the area on board and they all proudly display their thebestof certificate – which says why the people of Bromsgrove believe they are the best. Lots of tradesmen in the area have ‘as recommended on thebestof Bromsgrove’ on their vans. If you pick up the local paper you’re quite likely to see Ian’s face in there as he gets involved in another local charity initiative or cause célèbre! He’s also on the back of the local bus and you can’t miss his thebestof branded Mini as he whizzes around town. “You don’t need a huge town to make a massive success of thebestof. In the

Midlands we are surrounded by bigger places but the people in Bromsgrove are proud of their town and thebestof has given them an outlet to demonstrate that pride. In many respects I think it’s easier to be successful in a smaller town because word travels faster and it’s easier to get yourself known. My earnings are now well into six figures each year – and I get lots of time at home with my young children , which is brilliant. Before I joined thebestof I ran a different franchise. The support that I get from thebestof HQ is amazing compared to my experiences with that previous well-known brand.” Ian Prowse, thebestof Bromsgrove franchise

Our package of services – with online and direct marketing alongside networking – make it unique and cost-effective which means it’s easy to differentiate ourselves from any competitors. I’ve got a very high retention rate and my annual revenues are well into six figures. With a very low cost-base, this creates a significant profit that continues to grow steadily. It feels good to play an active part in the local business community and establish long-term relationships with like-minded business owners. I really enjoy meeting up regularly with my fellow franchisees to share ideas and best practice over a drink or two! We’re a very friendly bunch and there is always someone to talk to. Our head office team provide excellent on-going support and they continue to innovate and develop the model so we stay at the cutting edge in this fast-moving marketplace. Running a thebestof franchise requires a good level of organisation and positive attitude – any other skills can be picked up along the way and from the training provided by our Franchise Development Team. Without a doubt taking on a thebestof franchise was the best business decision I have ever made. It involves a fair amount of hard work, especially in the early years, but I’ve found it highly motivational, very rewarding, extremely enjoyable and ultimately very worthwhile.” Nick Taimitarha, thebestof Richmond franchise

He said: “The couple have taken over a large hall, but they are keen to renovate and reduce the energy bills as it costs a lot to maintain. “They are looking at possibly two wind turbines in the grounds of the property and a ground source heat pump to provide the heating requirements.

Andrew Clarke, of renewable energy experts Puragen, has promised to fulfil a commitment to carry out a free installation despite having had to pack up his exhibition stand at the show two days early.

“However, there was a lot of interest shown in renewable technologies during the short time we were there and lots of people entered our free draw for a free installation so I think it’s only right I honour the offer.

“We were looking forward to meeting lots of potential customers over the three days but unfortunately the weather meant that wasn’t possible,” commented the former engineer.

“The show might have been a washout for most people, but at least I can bring a bit of sunshine to someone.” Andrew, who lives in Hutton Rudby, only took ownership of the Puragen franchise in June.

“I think the rural and agricultural sectors are definitely a growth area for renewable energy systems. A lot of these estates and farms are reliant on oil which is becoming increasingly expensive.

“The industry is still in its infancy, but I have spoken to a lot of people and there is definite interest. It is now just about getting out there and educating them.

“Modern farming techniques such as milking machines also create a great demand for energy. With space available in either fields or on ancillary buildings it therefore makes sense to invest in renewables and take some control over those energy costs.

GREEN GROWTH IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR BUSINESS Did you know? The demand for renewable energy is gathering pace and microgeneration is currently one of the fastest growing business sectors in the UK.

A standard 3kWp system can generate over 2,500 kilowatt hours of electricity a year - that’s around three quarters of a typical household’s electricity needs.

However, recent research carried out by Puragen revealed 59% of 2,000 UK homeowners don’t understand the subject of renewable energy at all and would welcome advice on the options open to them.

A typical solar installation could save up to £180 per year on fuel bills alone. Add in the income generated from the Feed in Tariff and you could be saving up to £600 per year – for the next 25 years.

Puragen address this lack of knowledge and understanding by providing informed advice and quality installations.

More than 300,000 solar PV installations have now taken place in the UK as homes and businesses become switched on to the idea of renewable technology and its benefits.

Jeremy Malindine, Head of Puragen said: “There are so many misconceptions about renewable energy and we hope to make the process much simpler and empower people with the information they need.”

At Puragen, we have years of experience in the field of renewable energy so we are very well placed to offer sound advice on a case-by-case basis. What’s right for one home, is not necessarily right for all.

Adding renewable technologies adds value to your home. Half of UK homeowners believe homes with greener features are easier to sell. Renewable technology reduces your reliance on grid electricity and fossil fuels and therefore your exposure to higher energy prices in the future.

SIX FIGURE INCOME – GUARANTEED! her clients achievements, which have drawn the attention and praise of HSBC and of course ActionCOACH’s global community of 1,000 business coaches.

Shweta Jhajharia started her ActionCOACH franchise in the middle of an economic recession. At the time, she was a 29 year old first-time woman entrepreneur, who had moved to the UK less than a year ago and had never lived outside of India before. She gave up her management role with the world’s top FMCG company - a stable and well-paying job and decided to follow her heart to become an entrepreneur. She continues to shuffle the demands of being an entrepreneur alongside managing a vivacious young son. Despite the obvious challenges, Ian Christelow & Julie Wagstaff (with the experience and learning from over 100 franchise partnerships behind them), saw something in Shweta Jhajharia to know that she would be successful. Action speaks louder than words and not only did Ian & Julie reassure Shweta through this anxious decision-making time, they also guaranteed her twelve thousand pounds per month of income in just her seventh month as long as she stuck to her marketing plan or she could have her money back – no questions asked! To our knowledge, this was the first

time a premium franchise had ever entered into such an agreement, but it’s now the normal kind of arrangement for Ian & Julie’s ActionCOACH franchisees. Shweta has single-handedly grown her ActionCOACH franchise from having no clients at the start of 2009 to making approximately one million pounds of income by the time you hear her speak at this show. Best of all, she has achieved her incredible success by helping other business owners grow their businesses and transform their lives.

In fact, Shweta’s ActionCOACH clients across all sectors have achieved on average 52% annual business growth – just think about that for a moment ... 52% year on year growth for clients of ActionCOACH in the middle of a recession – how would you like to be involved in a business that delivers results like that for business men and women in your community? Shweta Jhajharia is a remarkable case study of a franchisee. The ActionCOACH franchise has enabled her to balance her roles as wife, mentor, motivator and mother. Her company has achieved a turnover of three quarters of a million pounds in the last two years with a profit margin of over 60%.

FORMER SOLDIER LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

ANDREW’S AMBITION FOR RENEWABLES

Every year, around 24,000 people leave the British armed forces and many find the transition hard.

When former engineer Andrew Clarke chose to embark on a new career he wanted to ensure it involved his passion for renewable technologies.

Ex-servicemen and women who start their own business are a rare breed, however John Scott is one of them. After 24 years in the army, the 51-year-old former-soldier decided to run his own business by becoming a Puragen franchisee. The military trained engineer was looking for a self-sustaining business that would deliver financial security and as he jokingly explains: “The Puragen franchise is really my Harley Davidson – my mid-life crisis! “My wife and I decided that we wanted to start our own company so we visited The Franchise Show to investigate what opportunities existed. We already have a passion for the environment so when we saw the Puragen stand, it really struck a chord with us.” Excited by the Puragen opportunity, John undertook all the relevant qualifications needed to be able to advise customers on the various technologies available and how to install them. And with the support of his wife Louisa, who is the company’s operations director, the franchise is now well and truly off the ground. The franchise has been financed by a combination of the couple’s savings and a bank loan from NatWest, which was organised with the aid of Puragen. The couple also hope to receive a top-up loan from the British Legion as part of its ‘Be the Boss’ scheme. John’s franchise covers a large geographical area stretching across Dorset, East Devon, South Somerset and South Wiltshire. Puragen’s renewables package offers households and businesses the chance to save on their energy bills and capitalise on the various grants and schemes available. John comments: “The renewables market is going from strength to strength and we’ve had a really positive response from homeowners and businesses in our target region. “We’re channelling our passion for the environment into this great business opportunity.”

The 47-year-old, who currently owns his own building firm, is the latest recruit to sign up as a franchisee for renewables experts Puragen. “I am really excited by it all,” commented Andrew. “The industry is still in its infancy, but I have spoken to a lot of people and there is definite interest. I always had a passion for renewables so it was a natural route to take.” After running his own building firm, and working as an engineer for firms such as British Steel and ICI, Andrew’s focus is now on letting people know about the benefits of renewable technologies such as solar PV, heat pumps, biomass and wind turbines. “I think a big part of the job will be giving people the right information to make their own decision about renewables and the benefits they bring.” he added. “It’s about finding a balance. Renewables provide assurance in terms of energy savings and conservation. It should not be motivated by profits from the tariffs available.” Andrew was introduced to

renewable technologies a few years ago when carrying out renovation work for his building firm. He opted to go down the franchisee route for the greater exposure it offered him and his business. “I have had some experience of fitting ground source heat pumps when carrying out property renovations, but I chose Puragen because I wanted credibility as a brand,” said Andrew. “Having that brand backing really helps entice customers and gives you credence when bidding for work with large building firms. It is difficult to influence people without that credibility.” Since signing up with Puragen Andrew has been trained in the installation of all technologies and gained MCS accreditation – crucial for working within renewables. In addition Puragen provided basic management and finance training to ensure the business performs in a professional way. Andrew’s franchise covers a large area across North Yorkshire. “I fully believe, that in time, people can become self sustainable and reduce their dependency on traditional energy sources.”

FRANCHISE RESEARCH QUESTIONS TO ASK Any franchise relationship must be built based upon mutual trust and respect. The franchisor provides support and motivation to their network of franchisees and in turn benefits through a share of the franchisee’s ultimate success. Running your own business requires self-motivation, stamina and you’ll also need the ability to stick at it in adversity. At the same time, you must be prepared to accept the franchisor’s rules for their business system. Be honest – Will franchising be right for you? Of course, franchising is not right for everyone. For people who value independence or want to run a business without restrictions or to re-invent the wheel, franchising might not be the right option. Anyone considering investing in a franchise must be prepared to ask some probing questions of the franchisor. Their responses will assist you in deciding whether the franchise is right for you. Common sense will take you a long way in deciding whether the

franchise you are considering will prove right for you. I’ve prepared the following questions to help you evaluate a franchise before deciding whether to invest. This list is for guidance only and it is not exhaustive. You’ll still need to rely on your own judgement before investing in a particular franchise. Before making any decisions speak to as many existing franchisees as you can. Don’t let the franchisor cherry pick who you speak to, so you should ask for a list of the contact details for the entire franchisee network. Each franchisee is running their own business so time is valuable to them and you should therefore expect introductions to the franchisee network to be managed. Talk to the top performing franchisees as well as those not doing so well. This will give you a good

44 | THE FRANCHISE SHOW SEPTEMBER 2012 www.thefranchiseshow.co.uk

understanding of what it takes to run a successful unit for the franchise you are interested in and just as importantly highlight why certain franchisees underperform. Talk to franchisees who have recently invested themselves in the franchise and ask whether the franchisor has delivered on the promises their made and if they have managed to hit their start up business projections. Knowing what they do now would they still make the investment in the franchise? You should also speak to some franchisees who are more established and have passed the start up business stage. If the franchisor only seems interested in taking your money and not supporting you develop

your own business you should be prepared to walk away. You must be one hundred percent comfortable with the proposed investment. You are looking for a franchisor that is passionate about supporting you to build a successful franchised business which will be beneficial to both parties. For further guidance on whether franchising is right for you speak to the trained franchise managers at the Lloyds Banking Group, at Stand 170.
