No extra waste recycling services over Christmas By Fiona Blick Moira Shire Council voted against additional waste recycling services in Yarrawonga and Bundalong over the Christmas period as councillors deemed it “unlikely” residents would support the additional service at a cost per residence of $2.27.

The total estimated cost to provide the extra waste recycling services for the Shire would be $18,750 for the three week Christmas period. Council said however there was little evidence to support the belief quantities of recyclables

will increase over the Christmas period and there would not be any additional benefit to residents from provision of the service. Councillor Brian McKenzie said transfer stations throughout the shire will accept recycling waste free of charge. “We should look at this again early next year and check our financial situation,” Cr McKenzie said. Councillor Judy Heather called for promotional work to be put in local newspapers highlighting what is recyclable and what isn’t. “We really should be putting out some educational notices on what can actually be recycled

and then maybe there won’t be too much of a problem,” Cr Heather said. Councillor Wendy Buck spoke against the motion saying she failed to see how $2.27 would adversely affect rate payers. “I find it hard to believe how we can think there is not more recyclable waste over the Christmas period,” Cr Buck said. “I believe the majority of residents would vote in favour of having extra waste recycling services just over this period. We should be leading the recycling challenge by example.”

Murray Darling towns get their voice Member for Farrer Sussan Ley has welcomed a decision which will see her sit on the Tony Windsor Committee inquiring into the Murray Darling Basin Authority Basin Plan.  Convention dictates Shadow Ministers are not allocated positions on Standing Committees, however Ms Ley sought an exception given the basin plan’s potentially turbulent impact on the future of Farrer’s irrigation and farming communities.  The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Regional Australia convened

last Wednesday and met with officials from the authority. Ms Ley said with so much of the Murray Darling Basin lying within the electorate, she felt it was imperative this region’s voice be heard loud and clear. “I look forward to working co-operatively with all members of the committee. Of most concern is the science of the plan, with all the projected pain coming from scientific models which clawback up to 7000gl in environmental water. This must be thoroughly tested,” Ms Ley said. The committee will accept

written submissions from interested organisations and individuals by 20 December 2010 and will also undertake site inspections and public hearings in affected communities.  “I will press for a visit to specific areas of Farrer to ensure the committee members get the message this plan has the potential to decimate Australia’s primary food bowl, along with the towns and people who grow our nation,” Ms Ley said. The committee report is due to be presented to Parliament by end of May 2011.
