PRSJ Remembers His Worship the Mayor George Lee Mayor of the Municipality of Portmore

One of the pioneers of Public Relations in Jamaica, and of the PRSJ, the late Mayor of Portmore George Lee is remembered as someone who used the very best practices of the profession to become a visionary nation builder. Mayor Lee died on September 29, 2013. A careful thinker and a consensus builder, Mr Lee used his considerable knowledge gained from years in the field of journalism and publishing to help to build the emerging metropolis of Portmore, which became Jamaica’s first municipality serving hundreds of thousands of residents. He served as mayor for two terms.

Have you considered free online courses?

Jamaica has an enviable record of having the tradition of locally trained and educated Public Relations practitioners who can go on to occupy the highest level posts in corporations and also secure PR contracts. In addition to the recognised and certified courses, a new area has emerged with online certificate courses from recognised institutions, that are not accredited, but nonetheless have some value. These include Coursera which partners with top universities and organizations in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. The World Bank Institute also offers free interdisciplinary courses that are specific to subjects in the field of development. Both these institutions offer instruction, assignments and assessment. PR practitioners can consider these to be opportunities to sharpen your skills and be on-trend with the rest of the world.

The Public Relations Society of Jamaica is proud to have Mayor George Lee counted among our Founders, and as an exemplar of what visionary thinking and effective public relations can achieve. We extend our sincere condolences to his widow Aneita and family. PRSJ
