How Is Your Memory Faring? A note from the desk of Charles Tolbert

The latest issue of the AARP Magazine has an interesting article, “Is My Memory Normal,” that everyone should read. The writer, Lisa Davis, feared that she was “losing her marbles.” So she entered a “brain lab” for a memory assessment test and advice on maintaining mental acuity during the later years. She learned that brain health is an essential part of the holistic approach to exercise: If you don’t use it, you lose it. The message you and I get from the article is that brain fitness exercises facilitate learning and the retention of knowledge. Some of

the recommendations for strengthening memory are what one would expect from any fitness expert: a walking routine (preferably with a companion), six or more hours of sleep, and a healthy diet (green vegetables, fish, nuts, etc.). Other suggestions for improvement, however, pertain primarily to the brain. Never stop learning: “The brain is like the biceps; both can be toned up at any age.” Develop a pattern for remembering specific items (like names). Engage in periodic meditation, times of quiet relaxation, focusing on positive

thoughts about oneself. The point is made that quiet moments help relieve stress, a dysfunctional factor for the brain. And, finally, the importance of reading can’t be overemphasized. The brain fitness program also includes getting stimulation from games, puzzles, and brain teasers. There are a number of activities here at Providence Park in which you and I can participate that are beneficial for the brain. To name a few, we have dominoes (42, 84, Nel-O, Chicken Foot, etc.), card Memory continued on page 4

New Friends at Providence Park Welcome Mardy Wohlers Apt. 1217

One of Mardy’s daughters lives in Round Rock, Texas and the other lives in Minnesota. She has nine grandchildren, five girls and four boys. One grandson is married – but no greatgrandchildren, yet.

Mardy was born, grew up, married and had her three children in Minnesota. Her husband was a pharmacist and they lived in Lake City, Minnesota for 18 years. He had his own pharmacy there. They decided to move to a

warmer part of the country and settled in Las Vegas, Nevada for ten years. When her husband decided to make a change he chose to work for the Federal Government. Their move, in 1984, was to Waco where he began working at the Veteran’s Hospital.

Mandy spends much of her time as a volunteer at Providence Hospital, Providence Park and St. Peters, the Catholic Student Center at Baylor University. She assists with a variety of services and activities. She had just finished baking a big batch of cookies. Mardy said she is glad to be living at The Village and she has most of her boxes unpacked.

Come and welcome our new Activity Director on August 7 at 2 pm in the Village Dining Room!

New Friends at Providence Park

Welcome Ernest and Evelyn Bezdek Apt. 1316 one great-grandchild. Ernest and Evelyn have done a lot of travelling since they retired in 1983. They have travelled in Europe quite a few times, have been to Alaska and have gone on several cruises.

Ernest grew up in Penelope, Texas and Evelyn grew up in West, Texas. They met at a dance at the SPJST hall in 1947. (Ask them about their first date.)

at Point West Bank in West. Evelyn worked as Activity Director at the West nursing home. She also was a Social Worker at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.

Ernest served in the U.S. Military Intelligence in Italy and also during the Korean Conflict. He continued serving for many years in the Army Reserves. After his service years, Ernest worked at Citizen’s National Bank in Waco. Evelyn worked as a secretary at Grayson’s Department store in Waco. (Some of us remember all of the department stores on Austin Avenue.)

The Bezdek’s home and most of their possessions were destroyed in the West explosion. Their ceiling fan fell on Evelyn. She had a concussion and many glass fragments in her head. Their home has been completely leveled.

In 1966 Ernest went to work

The Bezdeks have a son and two daughters. Their son lives in Houston, one daughter lives in Austin, and the other lives in West. They have five grandchildren and

The Bezdek’s keep busy volunteering. Ernest was honored as Fraternalist of the Year in 2002 or 2003. (He couldn’t remember the year and those records were lost in the explosion.) This weekend they are at the SPJST hall helping with a fundraiser. Since housing was not available in West, they looked in Waco. They visited with Ernest’s sister, Doris Konvicka, who lives in an apartment at St. Elizabeth Place. They looked at apartments at The Village and decided this was their choice of places to live. They are enjoying meeting many new friendly people and are glad to be getting settled in The Village at Providence Park.

Memory continued from page 1 games (Bridge, Hand and Foot, Solitaire), parlor games (Scrabble, Monopoly, chess, checkers), puzzles (pictures from a thousand pieces), Pass the Bomb (creating words from letters), and a real brain teaser, Dakin Brain Fitness. So, if you’re concerned with forgetfulness as I am at this stage of our “life game,” it would be wise for us to stay involved in activities that strengthen the mind and lessen the loss of memory.
