Ground is broken for a new, rural health center in Polson Multiphase transformation will break down barriers, increase access and build trust with continuity of care close to home.

In the heart of every successful community, there are unsung heroes whose dedication and vision turn dreams into reality. In Polson, Montana, two extraordinary women have transformed an ambitious dream into a historic health care campaign destined to reshape the future of the community.

The tireless efforts and heartfelt dedication of Diane Long and Blair Sprunk have inspired countless others to join Critical Access: A Campaign to Transform Care in Polson. A $31 million multiphase campus transformation will create a new rural health clinic, renovate and enhance the safety of the emergency department at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center and add a state-of-the-art MRI suite to meet the growing community need. This is only possible because of community support.

By the close of 2025, donors had invested nearly $16 million toward the $18 million fundraising goal. Blair noted, “We approached every conversation with the belief that people want to make a difference when given the opportunity. The response has been humbling and confirms what we’ve always known about this special community.”

The health of Polson’s residents will be forever improved because two dedicated women dared to believe the community deserved better and then worked tirelessly to make that belief a reality.

Building a culture of well-being for those who care for us all A comprehensive program helps caregivers stay grounded in their purpose — and reminds them they’re not alone.

After the extraordinary demands of the pandemic, burnout among clinicians continues to rise. Staffing remains tight, administrative demands are growing, and too many caregivers are questioning whether they can sustain a career in medicine.

To meet this moment, Swedish Medical Group in Seattle, WA, launched the Wellbeing Program – an initiative grounded in three pillars: efficiency of practice, personal resilience and a culture of wellness.

With support from the Providence Clinical Network and generous philanthropic partners, two early priorities – DAX Copilot and peer-to-peer support – are already making a meaningful difference.

Through DAX Copilot, an AI-powered documentation tool, clinicians are spending less time charting and more time with patients and, in turn, with their own families. Peer-to-peer support offers a confidential, fully anonymous lifeline, helping caregivers process grief, stress and trauma while serving as a critical suicide prevention resource.

Donor generosity deepens the impact by strengthening onboarding and leadership training, hosting connection events that foster peer support, expanding mentorship for advanced practice clinicians and measuring progress through real-time well-being data, helping to ensure those who dedicate their lives to healing others also receive the care, connection and support they deserve.

Medical Assistant Apprentice program advances caregivers Apprenticeship recipients gain real-world skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and academic learning.

The Medical Assistant Apprentice program at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington, empowers caregivers to further their health care knowledge. Thanks to the investment of donors, the newest cohort at Providence St. Mary got underway in 2025.

The program at Providence St. Mary is competitive, and apprentices are selected from current caregivers. They receive on-the-job training while employed, pay no tuition fees and receive job placement as medical assistants immediately upon graduation.

Another member of that group is Valeria Sanchez, who said she is frequently surprised by what she learns during training. “I remove sutures and staples when I never thought this would be something I would be doing in my life! Also, learning to draw blood — who would have thought I would be doing that — and I love it,” Sanchez said.

She added she also enjoys showing her kids it’s never too late to learn new skills.

Support for the program comes from individual gifts and the Providence St. Mary Foundation Golf Tournament, which is held each July at Walla Walla Country Club.

Created during the pandemic when demand skyrocketed, the Providence St. Mary Medical Center program was modeled after the successful Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.

A legacy of giving ensures the highest quality of cardiac care The new, state-of-the-art facility is expected to attract top-tier cardiovascular specialists to Sonoma County.

Norma Person’s gift of $5 million to Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Foundation honors a legacy while building the future of cardiovascular care in Sonoma County.

Her transformative gift will establish the Dr. John B. Reed Center for Cardiac Care, an innovative cardiovascular hub that unites clinicians, researchers and educators in one place, expanding access to worldclass cardiac care across Northern California.

Named in honor of John B. Reed, M.D., Sonoma County’s first cardiologist, the center reflects Dr. Reed’s legacy of more than five decades spent extending and saving lives throughout the community. Dr. Reed’s extraordinary dedication and advocacy were recognized with the 2024 Physician Champion Award from Providence South Division Philanthropy.

Norma’s generosity continues the philanthropic legacy she and her late husband, Evert, established through their foundational support of the Norma and Evert Person Heart & Vascular Institute. This latest gift brings their lifetime giving total to $20 million, supporting many initiatives at Memorial over the years and ensuring that the highestquality care remains accessible in Sonoma County.

Closing the gap in care Through Providence’s Health Equity Fellowship, caregivers are turning insight into action.

Providence leads an annual 12-month clinical and operational fellowship for caregivers of diverse backgrounds, focused on advancing health equity and quality improvement. Fellows from across the system dedicate 25% of their time to learning, applying new approaches and leading projects designed to address disparities in care.

One powerful example comes from Providence Mission Hospital, where Moojan Razvan, MBA, Supervisor of Interpreter Services, led a focused effort to improve outcomes for sepsis patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). This population has historically experienced longer hospital stays and higher rates of readmission compared to Englishspeaking patients.

Working with an interdisciplinary team and informed by a focus group of Spanish-speaking patients, Moojan implemented targeted, patientcentered strategies. These included daily care coordination rounds to address barriers to discharge, culturally and linguistically appropriate education for patients and families, post-discharge follow-up calls, and stronger connections to community-based resources.

The results were both measurable and meaningful. The average length of stay for LEP sepsis patients decreased by 25% while 30-day readmission rates dropped by 28%. Most significantly, the disparity between LEP patients and their English-speaking peers was eliminated, exceeding the project’s original goals.

Training tomorrow’s caregivers Providence St. Mary welcomes its first class of internal medicine residents.

With more than 1,000 applicants competing for just 10 positions, Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, California, launched its new Internal Medicine Residency program, made possible through the generosity of the Rauch Family Foundation and other donors.

The residency program is not just about training doctors; it’s about keeping them in the community. Research shows that many physicians choose to stay and practice in the communities where they complete their training. With the High Desert experiencing a critical shortage of doctors, this program couldn’t come at a more urgent time.

As part of their training, residents will provide outpatient care at the newly established Continuity Clinic, where each will manage a roster of patients. These long-term physician-patient relationships will improve care, boost patient trust and compliance, and allow residents to see firsthand the challenges faced by underserved populations.

The program represents a powerful investment in the future of health care in the High Desert, bringing more physicians, strengthening access and improving care for the community.

Behind the breakthroughs: ISB’s postdoctoral fellows in focus Postdoctoral fellowships help early-career investigators pursue innovative projects, shaping a healthier future for us all.

Postdoctoral fellows are the lifeblood of research institutions, yet their contributions are often under-recognized. At the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Washington, postdocs enter the scientific workforce with passion, vision and advanced training— bringing the fresh ideas that fuel discovery.

“Postdocs are the pulse of ISB,” said Nitin Baliga, MSc, Ph.D., ISB director, senior vice president, and professor. “The innovation that happens here is driven, in large part, by the ideas that postdocs bring when they work with professors at ISB.” In 2025, ISB board member Douglas Howe pledged a generous $100,000 matching gift to support postdoc fellowships — and thanks to the collective generosity of donors and board members, the match was met.

“A postdoc’s journey at ISB goes beyond research – it prepares them to solve real-world problems that require interdisciplinary skills and collaboration across labs. At graduate school, you learn how to do research. But going from that skill set to becoming an independent investigator, whether in academia or industry, is a rigorous journey,” Baliga said. “At ISB, postdocs learn not just how to do research but also how to establish their own research programs.”

Mission in motion: Mobile clinic delivers dignity and hope Every visit is a reminder that access to care shouldn’t depend on having a permanent address or transportation to get to a clinic.

Thanks to donors, health care is rolling directly out onto the streets of South Puget Sound. The Providence Swedish Mobile Health Clinic isn’t just transportation — it’s traveling transformation for Olympia, Washington. For those who are unhoused, uninsured or struggling to access care, it’s a consistent, compassionate presence made possible through generosity.

Meeting a growing community’s health care needs Launched in 2022 as a small-scale pilot project, the clinic has grown into a trusted and visible lifeline. A team of nurses, mental health professionals and caregivers now brings care into the community several times each week.

In 2025, the street medicine team served 928 patients — treating wounds, offering behavioral health support, tending to foot care needs and providing follow-up after hospital stays.

Every visit is a reminder that access to care shouldn’t depend on having a permanent address or transportation to get to a clinic. The mobile clinic delivers not only treatment but also dignity and hope.

This is Providence’s Mission in motion. It’s meeting people where they are and walking with them toward better health.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes offer a compassionate safety net Covenant Health adds three new boxes across the South Plains, each one a symbol of hope when it’s needed most.

Covenant Health in Lubbock, Texas, believes in meeting people where they are, especially in life’s most vulnerable moments. Thanks to donors who share this belief, three new Safe Haven Baby Boxes were installed at Covenant Children’s in Lubbock, Covenant Health Plainview and Covenant Hospital Levelland. As the eighth, ninth and 10th boxes in Texas, each one is a symbol of hope and a refuge in a moment of crisis.

These boxes offer a safe, anonymous option for parents in crisis to surrender their newborns without fear or shame. They are climate controlled, monitored 24/7 and designed to ensure immediate care

by Covenant’s trusted caregivers.

These Safe Haven Baby Boxes represent a heartfelt promise to the community that every life is precious and that no one walks alone.

This initiative not only provides a last-resort option but also raises awareness, offers resources and builds a safety net that extends beyond hospital walls. It is a quiet but powerful way these communities can stand together, creating a place where no baby is abandoned and no parent is left without options.

Donors are part of this mission. Showing support through Covenant Health Foundation, they are helping to ensure resources like these are available when and where they are needed, building a community where compassion is not just a promise but also a practice.

Children and families connect and recharge at Camp Prov Camp Prov continues to create memories for children who wouldn’t otherwise get to attend summer camp.

In the summer of 2025, nearly 380 children discovered the magic of Camp Prov in Everett, Washington.

Designed for kids with special health care needs and their siblings, the week-long day camp was filled with music, arts and crafts, sensory play, and countless opportunities to connect, laugh and grow.

At Camp Prov, each camper is paired with a “buddy,” a counselor who supports them through every activity. The program is developed and guided by health care professionals, creating an environment where children feel safe and accepted.

Thanks to generous donors, no child is ever turned away because of an inability to pay. Scholarships make it possible for families across the community to experience this unique program that has been creating memories for nearly three decades. And, children may attend more than one year.

Camp Prov began humbly in 1996, when families had very few summer options that could accommodate their child’s special health care needs.

As word spread and demand grew, the camp moved to Forest Park, where it continues today as a much-anticipated tradition.

The impact reaches beyond the campers. Parents and caregivers get time to recharge, volunteers find purpose, and some campers return as teenagers to serve as buddies themselves, completing the circle of giving and growing.

Donors to Providence General Foundation and Providence General Children’s Association have made Camp Prov possible for 29 years now.

Music thanatology offers serenity during final moments of life Inspired by Benedictine monks in 10th-century France, music thanatology was considered “care for the body, cure for the soul.”

Thanks to donor generosity, two music thanatologists at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, offer a melodic, therapeutic approach to ease the end of life for dying patients and their loved ones.

These uniquely trained “clinical musicians” tailor their harp music and voices to respond to a patient’s changing condition and vital signs.

Gentle sounds can relieve anxiety, helping patients cope with pain, breathing difficulties and sleeplessness. Through these soothing notes, everyone in the room typically experiences a sense of peace and serenity.

“Our music offers a sense of peace in a time of great stress and heightened emotions. Many traditions believe that through the beauty of music, one can experience the divine,” said Laura Moya, CM-Th, certified music thanatologist.

Making meaningful connections is at the core. Inspired by Benedictine monks in 10th-century France, music thanatology was considered “care for the body, cure for the soul,” Laura explained. It remains so today.

About 800 people take their last breath in the hospital at Providence St. Vincent each year. Referrals for music thanatology come from Providence Palliative Care, and donor generosity supports this soothing service.

Scholarships address critical health care workforce needs An ongoing scholarship program helps local students pursue medical careers and offers current caregivers professional development.

Thanks to generous donor support, Redwood Memorial Foundation’s scholarship program has been quietly building the future of health care in Humboldt County, California.

With more than $162,000 awarded to date, this vital initiative has grown from distributing $6,000 annually to a robust $10,000 program in 2025, reflecting the community’s commitment to addressing the region’s critical health care workforce needs.

What sets this scholarship apart is its comprehensive approach to supporting health care education. Rather than limiting awards to high school seniors, the program embraces students at all levels of their educational journey, from recent graduates to seasoned professionals seeking continuing education.

Redwood Memorial Hospital employees can apply for professional development opportunities, while community members pursuing health care careers receive support throughout their academic progression.

Another unique aspect is that students can receive consecutive years of support, acknowledging that health care education often spans multiple years and is a significant financial investment.

Drive Focused Innovation for Positive Change

Research unlocks a novel way to protect the immune system A new phase I clinical trial is bringing renewed hope to cancer patients and their families.

At Providence Cancer Institute in Portland, Oregon, researchers have been a prominent force in immunotherapy as the fourth pillar of cancer care alongside chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

The treatment was a revolution, offering patients a more durable and less toxic option. Despite this progress, several solid tumor cancers remain challenging to fight — but new hope is emerging.

Your gifts are helping researchers develop a new drug, M3T01, that helps protect the immune system and targets a protein called Fas ligand.

The Fas ligand protein normally rids the body of tired immune cells, causing them to die after fighting an infection. But, when hijacked by cancer, the protein can also trigger the premature death of immune cells patients urgently need. Cancer cells exploit Fas ligand’s “clean-up” mechanism and use it to defend themselves, allowing the cancer to continue spreading.

Blocking Fas ligand with M3T01 could significantly enhance the therapeutic benefit of available immunotherapies. It may also diminish the invasive capability of tumor cells while increasing the number of immune cells able to infiltrate and attack tumors. Now researchers are testing it with a phase 1 clinical trial — the first step in evaluating its efficacy and safety as a potential new patient treatment.

Drive Focused Innovation for Positive Change

Driving advanced breast cancer technology across Alaska A new coach brings advanced cancer screenings to far-flung communities across Southcentral Alaska.

Patients across Southcentral Alaska now have access to the most advanced breast cancer screening technology, delivered right to their communities.

Generous donations funded Providence Alaska’s new mobile mammography coach — equipped with the same 3D mammography system used at Providence Imaging Center in Anchorage and bringing advanced cancer screenings to far-flung areas.

The coach, funded entirely by philanthropy, can provide screenings for up to 18 patients each day. Appointments take only 20 minutes, and everyone is welcome — regardless of their ability to pay.

Service now extends from Talkeetna to Homer and even along the Alaska Marine Highway to Cordova and Valdez and inland to Glennallen.

By making screenings available where people live and work, donors are helping patients detect cancer early, when the five-year survival rate is 99%.

The continued success of this program, along with stories of women who discovered breast cancer early after visiting the unit, shows the importance of making screenings available.

KUBTEC MOZART iQ 3D Margin Management System innovates breast cancer care This newly acquired technology decreases operating time and repeat surgeries to improve cancer outcomes.

Thanks to generous support, caregivers at Providence Breast Health can now use a KUBTEC MOZART iQ 3D Margin Management System that utilizes advanced tomosynthesis technology, advancing breast surgery for patients at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Providence Holy Family Hospital in the Spokane, Washington, area.

This new technology decreases operating time and improves cancer outcomes, marking a remarkable step forward in the future of breast health and providing advanced, compassionate care in the Inland Northwest region.

Previously, surgical teams had to pause surgery while physically transporting tissue samples to a separate location for imaging, causing delays and extended anesthesia.

Now, thanks to the addition of this system, surgeons can instantly check tissue margins right in the operating room. This means less waiting, less time under anesthesia and more peace of mind for patients and their families.

Breast surgical oncologists can now remove all cancerous tissue in the first surgery, sparing patients the anxiety and discomfort of repeat procedures.

The system has already contributed to a reduced need for additional surgeries by 50%.

Caregivers and community unite for North Patient Tower Providence Swedish marks a powerful milestone in its promise to future generations.

A special ceremony for Providence Swedish’s North Patient Tower in Seattle, Washington, illuminated a defining moment in the future of care. With the tower set to open in fall 2027, donors, board members and community leaders gathered to celebrate a shared promise — one rooted in compassion, vision and the belief that access to exceptional care should grow alongside the Pacific Northwest region it serves.

“It’s a promise to this community that we will be able to serve them adequately and provide access to health care for years to come,” declared Diankha Linear, chair of the Providence Swedish Board of Trustees.

“The building represents the best possible patient care Providence Swedish can provide,” said Ronald L. Berenstain, Board of Governors chair.

“Everyone here plays a role.”

The North Patient Tower stands as a tangible manifestation of this century-plus-long relationship and is only possible with the generosity of donors and the dedication of our caregivers. It will be a place where healing is powered not just by innovation but also by compassion, community and collective purpose.

When South Bay resident Julius Bogdanowicz began experiencing an irregular heartbeat, his Apple Watch alerted him to an unusually high heart rate, an early warning that led to a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation at Providence Little Company of Mary.

To treat his condition, the care team, led by electrophysiologist Omar Yasin, M.D., used pulse field ablation, a new, minimally invasive technology that delivers high-voltage electrical pulses to precisely target abnormal heart tissue, reducing the risk of complications and supporting a faster recovery.

Julius became one of the first patients at Providence Little Company of Mary to undergo the procedure. During treatment, physicians encountered a rare anatomical anomaly in his veins, found in just 0.02% of the population. Thanks to the team’s expertise and the precision of the technology, they were able to adapt in real time and successfully complete the procedure.

Now with a steady heartbeat and renewed energy, Julius and his wife, Barbara, are deeply grateful for the advanced care available close to home.

At Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, every breakthrough in care begins with the generosity of the community.

In 2025, donors elevated our caregivers’ ability to provide leading-edge cancer care by funding the acquisition of two remarkable technologies: a new positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanner and a state-of-the-art linear accelerator.

The Siemens Biograph Trinion PET/CT scanner is the most advanced of its kind and will be housed at The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center.

With ultrafast imaging, intelligent AI-guided workflow and a design that enhances comfort and reduces scan time, this powerful tool offers greater diagnostic precision across oncology, cardiology and neuroscience. It also improves patient experience with a calming environment and quicker, lower-dose procedures.

Complementing this advancement is the Varian Edge linear accelerator, an industry-leading radiosurgery system that delivers highly focused radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy. Its ability to track and target tumors in real time while sparing healthy tissue means patients receive faster, safer and more effective treatment with fewer side effects.
