The Providence spirit of compassionate care radiated throughout every corner of the Valley in 2010, as our three medical centers went about the business of healing and changing lives through excellence in healthcare each and every day. As the dedicated people at Providence Holy Cross, Saint Joseph and Tarzana Medical Centers embrace patients and families with care, and reach out to help the poor and vulnerable in our communities, I view the Foundation as a strong pillar of support that transforms the Mission of Providence into reality in so many ways each year. Despite the challenges evident in our economic climate, I speak on behalf of everyone at Providence in applauding the Foundation’s resourceful philanthropic initiatives and dedication that raised more than $14 million for our Valley hospital ministries in 2010. e true meaning of this generosity is almost unimaginable in the abstract, yet the tangible impacts are seen clearly in the wonders of medical technology, new services and programs, and capital projects that are born from
the seeds of this giving in pursuit of the Providence Mission. From the Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph to the new neonatal intensive care unit beds at Providence Tarzana to the laser tattoo removal machine at Providence Holy Cross, the spirit that drives our Foundation to do its good work exemplifies our tradition of excellence established by the Sisters of Providence 153 years ago. Our work at the Valley ministries of Providence Southern California relies on the Foundation’s continuing commitment to giving and unwavering belief in our Mission, just as our patients and those who are not as fortunate in our communities rely on the People of Providence to deliver the gift of high quality care. e successes achieved by our Foundation in 2010 have set the stage for a future of expanded service to all those in our care. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring our healing Ministry to more who need us throughout our community for many years to come.

Looking back on 2010, I’m heartened by what we as a community accomplished during such challenging economic times. We opened our magnificent Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. We prepared to open the beautiful expansion at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and we’ve built an incredible community support base at Providence Tarzana Medical Center. Our success was the result of two things – the extraordinary health care provided by Providence medical centers and our very generous donors who have contributed funding to ensure we can expand to serve the growing population and to equip our hospitals with the latest technology. Providence has raised its profile tremen-
dously in the San Fernando Valley. We’ve enhanced our services, sharpened our focus, expanded our outreach to the poor and vulnerable and found new ways to improve upon excellence. Our medical centers offer the same level of quality patients find at the prestigious academic medical centers, but with our special brand of compassionate care. is year’s Annual Report features one case from each of our three Valley Service Area Medical Centers. e stories of these extraordinary patients and our remarkable medical staff are truly inspirational. We look forward to another year of celebrations thanks to all who have contributed through our Foundations. We thank our donors and all who have supported our work in the Valley.

As a longtime member of the Providence Holy Cross Board of Governors and Chair of the Providence Health & Services Foundation Board of Directors, I understand all too well the important role that each Foundation donor plays. On behalf of our three Valley Service Area Foundations, I thank you for your support. Now, more than ever, philanthropy is key to maintaining the success and quality of our medical centers. During these difficult economic times, all of us have clearly felt the impact. Our fundraising goals for the much needed expansion at Holy Cross, e Hycy and Howard Hill Neuroscience Institute at Saint Joseph’s and the campaign to expand Pediatric services

Over the past decade, the Foundations have raised over $114 million for our medical centers. e determination of our donors to keep the Providence Medical Centers as leaders of quality care in our communities is clearly evident.

Undaunted, food services personnel lined the stairs from the basement kitchen to the first, second and third floors, passing trays and only stopping to rest after every patient had been served. 2010 could have been written off as a year of growing pains as upgrades were made and construction neared completion on the hospital’s new four-story South Wing. But the problem elevators, the closure of the main lobby and the dining room and the temporary relocation of several services didn’t dampen spirits. Rather, these inconveniences spurred enthusiastic efforts to find solutions. Since the Sisters of Providence ventured to Southern California nearly 70 years ago to build Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, this ministry has never seen such advances as in 2010. is was the year we opened our state-ofthe-art Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, the first fully comprehensive cancer program in the San Fernando Valley. e dream of the visionaries who developed this center was to bring together experts from across the care spectrum to meet all the needs of each patient. Our success is measured by the gratitude of patients so thankful for our dedication to treating mind, body and spirit. e year also was marked by the groundbreaking for our new Hycy and Howard Hill Neuroscience Institute, a program built on our excellence and compassion in treating stroke patients and others with neurological illnesses and injuries. Our stroke and inpatient rehabilitation programs, as well as our stellar group of physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians, have laid the foundation for this next step.
ese projects would not have happened without the support of our donors who have worked with the Providence Foundation to help fund cutting-edge equipment and facilities to enhance the Providence tradition of compassionate care. e Disney Family Cancer Center was seeded by a generous donation from these friends of Providence as well as from numerous studios in the area – the same businesses that helped build our original hospital. Hycy and Howard Hill also have provided tremendous support to the hospital and we look forward to opening the Institute that bears their name. Among so many members of the community who have contributed to our growth is the Cusumano family, pillars of Burbank’s business community, who donated $1 million to help fund the cutting-edge equipment for the Neuroscience Institute. And equally touching in their generosity have been our physicians, employees, volunteers, Guild members and our former patients and their family members who reached out to us to thank Providence Saint Joseph for the care they received.

MeSSage FRoM dale surowitz CHieF exeCutiVe pRoVidenCe taRzana It was a year that provided awe-inspiring moments as Providence Tarzana Medical Center fully embraced our Mission of outreach to the poor and vulnerable. In 2010, we proudly completed the transition of our hospital to a faith-based ministry in a unique style, recognizing the Catholic heritage of the Providence organization by hanging hundreds of crucifixes about, but also honoring our Jewish culture with a kosher mezuzah on every doorway. is was a proud first for Providence, and for Catholic health care. We now reach out to our patients not only with excellent care, but with an understanding that their faith is important in healing. Providence Tarzana also hosted the first Mother Joseph Fund event where our Valley ministries united to grant funds to very worthy charities in the community – small organizations that help the homeless, AIDS patients, children living in poverty and others in need. Additionally, hand-in-hand with our community partners, we hosted our first free health fair that drew hundreds of people, many who had been hurt by the poor economy and in need of basic health checks. Providence Tarzana always has celebrated excellence, a tradition shared by physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers and now our Foundation. We continue making advances - updating our diagnostics and imaging equipment; adding a new electrophysiology lab, providing complex procedures not avail-

able at other Valley hospitals and opening a new outpatient rehabilitation center that provides quality rehab programs for all ages. As the only Providence ministry in the San Fernando Valley with pediatric care, our fund-raising activities for 2010 were focused on upgrading our pediatric department, including a planned expansion and relocation of our pediatric ICU. We extend our thanks to the Phyllis and Angelo R. Mozilo Family Foundation for its very generous $2 million donation to our PICU. In our NICU, donors funded four new Giraffe Beds and a cooling blanket to reduce the possibility of serious brain damage in critically ill infants. annaBelle SMolinSki ann Smolinski, with her husband Matt by her side, was in labor with their second child. the pregnancy had been completely normal, and now, in the early hours of the morning, labor was also progressing normally. By all appearances there was time for Matt to run out to the parking lot and meet his brother so he could take their son home. But when he returned 10 minutes later, things had gone horribly wrong.
By the time I came back Annabelle was born, the curtains were drawn and they were working on her. My wife was alone with an oxygen mask on. I thought, Jeez, I left and everything was fine, and I come back and it’s a disaster.
kriStina Stolba, rn I clearly remember this case. We had an uneventful labor. When it was time for delivery, I called Dr. Kossari. About a minute prior to birth I lost the baby’s heartbeat, which was not necessarily unusual because of the position of the mother.
There was not much commotion really, just firm, direct talking–“OK I need this.” “Get that.” Things just happened. It was not chaotic. They were serious and really working hard to save her life.
2010 PH&s annual RepoRt
There was no movement, no breathing, and soon, we found out, no heartbeat. Which came as a horrific surprise, because we weren’t expecting this at all.
I was trying to calm the mother down. The mother and family were in shock. The mom was bleeding,
On the way my mind was racing. I was praying for the baby, praying that we could help the baby.
ShahraM koSSari, MD obstetrics-Gynecology The whole experience was incredible. We were not expecting any complications. It was a normal labor, a normal delivery. We delivered the baby without any difficulty at all. But as I held the baby, she had no muscle tone. The baby just draped around my arm. There was no movement, no breathing, and soon, we found out there was no heartbeat. Which came as a horrific surprise. We weren’t expecting this at all. Dee relucio, rn
When the baby came out, she was pale, with no spontaneous respiration, no heart rate, and so we started resuscitating. I was doing the chest compressions and the respiratory therapist was doing the ventilation. Every 30 seconds I checked the heart rate, but I didn’t hear anything, so I continued the resuscitation. Nobody lost their cool, nobody panicked. Everyone knew their role. It was very systematic.
The neonatologist was giving orders over the phone, on his way. I was trying to calm the mother down. The mother and family were in shock.
I probably hadn’t missed the birth by more than a minute or so. I could see that they were just really busy. One of the doctors asked for another doctor to come down there right now. Like RIGHT NOW.
arvy Quizo, rn
A nurse from Labor and Delivery came to Special Care Nursery and asked for my help. On the way my mind was racing. I was praying for the baby, praying that we could help the baby. I was going over in my mind what I needed to do, preparing myself for any emergency.
We weren’t able to get a line into the baby. 10 minutes passed, 15 minutes passed, we kept trying and trying.
At first we thought it was transitional. However, after a couple of minutes it was clear that the baby was down more than transitionally. It was very intense. At that point we called for backup. The crash team came in. Once I stabilized the mother, I went to the baby and confirmed there was no heartbeat. We were resuscitating the baby, doing CPR and preparing to intubate. We immediately called the neonatologist. 2010 PH&s annual RepoRt
Getting a peripheral IV line in with no blood volume is very hard. Arvy Quizo is a great Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse. When she arrived she was on an adrenaline rush—she got the line in on the first try. So I had no doubts. Still, when there’s no volume circulating, most of the time the veins are collapsed, so you have a problem. But I guess somebody up there was watching over us that night because everything fell into place and nobody panicked.

The sister-in-law kept thanking us for not giving up on her niece. It’s a feeling you cannot describe. That you did something to save somebody’s life, by just doing your job. It’s amazing.
I remember the neonatologist clearly stating to the parents that the reason this baby was alive was because of the nurses who did not give up. I was not only proud to be at Holy Cross, but proud to work with all the people in the room that night.
I had the stethoscope and was doing the chest compressions. Everyone saw my eyes get as big as saucers. I said, Oh my
God, there’s a heart beat!

I thought that maybe at any moment they would say OK that’s it--nothing, it’s been 45 minutes, nothing’s happened now, let’s call it. I could just feel it in the air. But it seemed like they just kept trying and trying and didn’t want to give up. It was a team effort. It went really smoothly. There was not much commotion really, just firm, direct talking--OK I need this, get that. Things just happened. It was not chaotic. They were serious and really working hard to save her life.
I think we were so determined not to give up on this baby. I had been in Labor and Delivery for less than a year at the time. This was one of my first emergencies, so it was quite a scary experience.
We hugged and patted each other on the back. We were really happy when the baby turned around. You cannot believe how relieved we were. The next day at work one of the nurses hugged me again and told me we did great.
The team effort was unbelievable. It never even came up that we were going to call it. It was understood and unspoken that we keep going until somebody came into that room and said we should quit. I think it’s not only because we’re nurses, but also because we want to treat our patients the way we would want our family treated. If that were my child, I wouldn’t want the nurses to give up.
Without the nursing skill sets and the passion that they bring to the table, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. Every single case that goes well in the OR, in the labor room, in the ICU, anywhere, is because of all the great people who work here. We really have the cream of the crop. My confidence was reaffirmed through this experience. We save lives, just like in this case, everyday. This is not an exception to the rule. This is something that happens everyday at Holy Cross.
Regardless of who you are or what you can afford to pay, we treat you the same, we treat you like a human being. I’m proud to say we live our core values. Even the doctors themselves say, why do you think I keep bring my patients here? Because of the nurses. Because the nurses use their judgment and knowledge and skill, I can sleep at night knowing that my patients are being well cared-for.
Once we gave blood you could see the baby pink up from head to toe. I had the stethoscope and was doing the chest compressions. Everyone saw my eyes get as big as saucers. I said, Oh my God, there’s a heart beat! It was like she woke up from a bad dream. Like nothing happened, a normal newborn. Her muscle tone was great, color was great, and the heart rate was strong. She was crying and kicking and screaming. Usually we expect a slow response after a prolonged resuscitation, but not this baby— hey, I’m born all over again! It was the best feeling ever.

We reviewed the case and couldn’t find anything that we could pinpoint as to why this happened. It was just a complication that arose with the intrapartum issues that can go wrong. I tell my patients that you can deliver anywhere, and for ages we delivered in the barn. Most of the time everything goes well, because usually you have healthy patients and healthy babies, but when things don’t go the way they’re supposed to go, you’d better be in the right hospital, with the right nursing and the right doctors, and this case is an example.

So to have a letter like this come seven years later reaffirms that we did the right thing. Because of us, this child is out there—healthy and with no problems. It’s amazing. It’s a great, good feeling.

It’s amazing it has been seven years, but that baby stands out for me. We always knew the baby was going to survive. There was no reason to think she wouldn’t. This was a perfect baby out of a perfect delivery out of a perfect intrapartum experience. I could not accept anything less than perfect. What struck me the most was the teamwork that went into this baby, the staff and the number of people who came to help. They did not care about anything other than saving this baby, and that is the spirit of our nurses at Holy Cross. Because we drop everything and run if a patient needs us. And that’s the kind of care this hospital provides for the community.

mastectomy is the only way to save her life, it’s overwhelming. Usually women diagnosed with breast cancer are older and already have a family. Older patients are usually more comfortable with the concept of mastectomy, but usually their tumors are smaller and they don’t need a mastectomy. Unfortunately Heather’s situation was the perfect storm of devastating news. A crucial point of oncology is individualization of care—not just for the cancer care, but also for the emotional care of the patient. Originally we thought I could have a lumpectomy, but when that wasn’t an option I went to see the psychologist at the Center, just to talk things through and get my head around the idea of mastectomy. I had my surgery at Saint Joseph across the street and then more chemo, and then radiation, which was probably the hardest part of the whole thing, because I had a bad reaction. Luckily acupuncture helped alleviate my nausea. 17

Having seen my mother go through it I realized it was totally survivable. I remember seeing these little old men and ladies getting treatment, and I thought, Well, if they can do it, I can too. When you’ve been diagnosed with cancer it’s easy to feel that you’ve lost your power and that everything happening is out of your control. It’s important to give patients some feeling of empowerment and reduce their anxiety by explaining all the choices in support services that they can utilize.
Before I started any treatments I saw Dr. Schwartz for at least 2 hours. It’s amazing how much time the doctors spend with their patients. Dr. Schwartz gave me a well-rounded plan for western and eastern medicine and suggested a variety of complementary therapies.
Heather had several psychological milestones to endure, since her treatment decisions were partly based on how her tumor responded to therapy.
We have extremely modern technologies complimented by older techniques of healing all under one roof. I think location matters. If Heather is here having therapy and she has a question or doesn’t feel well, I tell her just come upstairs and see me.
My treatment was always my choice. The cancer wasn’t anywhere else in my body, but you don’t want to have to deal with this again. I say this nonchalantly now, but I thought--OK, bring it on. Let’s do everything I can now.
It’s a different journey for every patient. The most significant factor for Heather in dealing with this diagnosis was her age. She went from being a young, single, happy, employed, successful person looking for all the things that young, single people are looking for, to becoming a patient fighting a life-threatening disease.

Women are surviving their cancer. They’re outliving their cancer. It’s important to help guide patients through this process.
Heather has done something that’s very important—she’s taken responsibility for her health. She learned about her disease, about treatments, about side effects, and then she did what was needed to get the best results from those treatments. Heather has been an active participant in her care, and I think that’s going to have a huge influence on how this impacts the rest of her life. You hear the word cancer and you automatically think--I’m going to be dead. But women are surviving their cancer. They’re outliving their cancer. It’s important to help guide patients through this process—let them know that things will be different, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to be worse. In fact for a lot of patients they feel that their lives are better. Some of my patients, whom I thought had the roughest time with chemo, have come back a year later and said having cancer was the best thing that ever happened to them. It forced them to appreciate what they have and keep everything in proper perspective.
When I was done with chemo I thought— Ok, now what? Do I just sit around and wait for it to come back? I’ve come to realize there are things I have control over,
like diet and exercise that can make a huge difference. I see people come in and out of the Center, and I hope they’re taking advantage of what’s offered here. It does make a difference. I can’t even imagine—all the people that work in this building, they have to see this every day. They deal with sick people day in, day out. This makes me want to cry, but I feel since I’m positive and friendly and upbeat, that it helps them deal with it too. Everybody here is so friendly—this might sound weird, but I miss my friends here— I’m not in that club anymore. And that’s it—it makes it sound so simple, but it went by very quickly. And here I am, a year later, going back to work soon. Now I feel, finally, back to normal.

My kids say the pain feels like pins and needles. The blood’s not flowing and it starts to swell, and their tissue is not getting oxygen. It’s never just a pain crisis. DJ had a sickle cell crisis just from sitting too long on a cold concrete bench.

Sickle cell is a very tricky illness. For instance, sickle cell patients get acute chest syndrome, which appears very similar to pneumonia, but it’s not. It has to be treated very differently. That’s a matter of life and death right there. Any infection is serious. Their immune system is null and void. Most sickle cell patients don’t have spleens— they’ve been destroyed. On top of it, the treatment can have side effects. Tiffany has hearing loss from multiple medications.
ceSar chavarria, MD, Medical Director, Pediactrics/Picu The variability is huge—some people have mild disease, some have severe. It depends on how prone the red cells are to becoming malformed. robin GinGolD, MD, faaP, Pediatrician These patients don’t look sick, but when they’re in crisis, they’re in significant and terrible pain. You have to figure out how to manage their pain, keep them well hydrated, and prevent catastrophic side effects. Anybody else, it would be enough to break them, but she just goes right on living and makes the best of it. Lavender and her husband sent me the sweetest letter. It brought tears to my eyes. It’s been an honor to be their nurse for so many years. I don’t know how Lavender does it. She’s like Wonder Woman to me. We fell in love with the Simpson family long ago. With long term patients you have to know, understand and trust the caregiver. Every one trusts Lavender because she’s always right on. She doesn’t wallow or say, I’m depressed, it’s not fair. She says what she needs to say and that’s it. Tiffany’s amazing--she’s tried so hard. When she’d get fired from one job because she spent too much time in the hospital, she’d go and find another. She’s never given up working and trying to do the best she can do. They’re a very special family.

Years ago we started making little Christmas gift bags for the patients because we truly know what it feels like to be in the hospital during the holidays. It may cheer them up a little bit to know our hearts are with them. You know, sickle cell is not a curse. Its something that we’ve been given and we take it and we walk with it, as opposed to fighting it. We take it day by day. We don’t complain. There’s always somebody out there worse off than you. I’m blessed any way I look at it. We’re thankful that Providence Tarzana is here. We can’t say that enough.

Partners IN ProvidenCe Our Partners IN ProvidenCe leave legacies of healing for those who come after us through bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities and charitable bequests of retirement plans and life insurance. Donors who make planned gifts to advance the future of health care in our communities ensure that vital services and new technologies will be available for generations to come. PartnersIN ProvidenCe embrace our mission by making planned gifts that support our Medical Centers, with a vision to continue providing excellent clinical treatment with compassionate care. Our vision inspires us to continually improve and upgrade our services to the community. We thank our friends for partnering with us in this philanthropic endeavor. FaMiliesbeneFit.YoubeneFit.weallbeneFit.
bequests Leave a lasting legacy by remembering our Foundation in your will. CharitablereMaindertrusts These planned giving vehicles help you reduce capital gains taxes on appreciated property, increase your cash flow and reduce your income tax payments. The tax-exempt trusts make payments to one or more individuals at a stated rate or amount for life or a term of years. Assets placed in trust will generate an income tax charitable deduction (based on IRS guidelines), can be reinvested tax free, and often avoid state tax benefits, since the trust assets pass to our Foundation when the trust terminates. Donors may appoint or serve as their own trustee. CharitableGiFtannuities Annuities often increase your retirement cash flow and reduce your taxes. A gift annuity is a simple agreement between the Foundation and one or two donors. In exchange for a gift to our Foundation of $10,000 or more, the Foundation makes lifetime annuity payments to you, based on the age of the annuitant. CharitablebequestoFretireMentPlans andliFeinsuranCe This allows you to name the Foundation as a beneficiary, or partial beneficiary, of your life insurance policy, 401(k), IRA or other retirement plan. There are various estate tax benefits. PlannedGiFtsbeneFits You can make a difference in the health care of your community through planned giving.
beneFitsinClude: • Simplify and reduce estate settlement costs • Avoid or reduce capital gains taxes on contributions of appreciated long-term property with respect to certain types of planned gifts. • Obtain a charitable tax deduction. • Reduce federal estate taxes • Retain income rights for your lifetime or a loved one's lifetime. • Possibly increase disposable income. • Be our guest at the Partners In Providence Annual Recognition Event • Be our guest at a variety of Providence Health & Services Special Events. • With your permission, have your name included in various publications as part of this invaluable group of donors.
For more information or assistance on how to become a
Partner IN ProvidenCe
contact the Foundation and ask to speak to our Director of Planned Giving, Ron Bitzer, (818) 847-4673.
