2021: I’M THANKFUL FOR FARMWORKERS FUNDRAISER NOVEMBER 5

GREETINGS, Thank you so much for joining us virtually for the I’m Thankful for Farmworkers Fundraiser. I am looking forward to celebrating farmworkers and thanking them for all they do for us every single day. Over the past year, Proteus has been able to expand programs and our team, thanks to grants and donors like you. Funds from events like this allow Proteus to innovate and transform to meet the needs of farmworkers. I am looking forward to raising even more funds to help Proteus provide agricultural workers and their families with affordable healthcare, education assistance, and job training. Proteus has done what many organizations across the country have done over the last eighteen months – pivoted, adapted, and innovated. Our health program has gone from focusing on COVID-19 testing to COVID-19 vaccinations and now back to providing primary care to our patients. We have launched a new program this past year to take our healthcare delivery model into small meat processing facilities. Our workforce programming has continued to support farmworkers in reaching their goals and our health and safety training has provided life-saving information for farmworkers on heat stroke prevention and pesticide exposure. Proteus is looking forward to reaching the goals we set in our new strategic plan. We will be sharing a little more about this in the program, and we are excited to unveil a new tagline that will be part of the Proteus brand. Our vision at Proteus is a better life for farmworkers. We try to do this by raising awareness and centering farmworkers voices and experiences. Our guest speaker, Justin Favela’s exhibit at the Des Moines Art Center does this as well. He brings awareness to the invisible workforce through art. It has been said that art holds a mirror to society and not only reflects what is, but it helps us visualize what can be. Farmworkers are just like anyone else, they want to have an honest living to provide for their families. My invitation to you is the next time you enjoy your meal, take a few moments and consider the journey it took to get to you, starting with farmworkers. Thank you again for your support. With gratitude,

Daniel Zinnel, EdD Chief Executive Officer

SPOKEN WORD By Matthew Marroquin

Laboring Fields of Love “Old McDonald had a farm…” You see, when I visit my cousins They call me farm boy Because of where I live. Fields of golden love Planted with feeding labor That make hands go hard While dirt hugs their jeans. Iowa has corn and soy To feed the nation And feed your cars But we can’t seem To feed our farmer’s familias. My family raises chickens. And they eat all our scraps, Left overs, fall throughs, and Ya know, all that But that shouldn’t be How the people, Who put it on our tables, Should be eating. ...

FEATURED SPEAKER: JUSTIN FAVELA Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, and known for large-scale installations and sculptures that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the Latinx experience, Justin Favela has exhibited his work both internationally and across the United States. His installations have been commissioned by museums including the Denver Art Museum in Colorado and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. He is the recipient of the 2021 Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship. Favela hosts two culture-oriented podcasts, “Latinos Who Lunch” and “The Art People Podcast.” He holds a BFA in fine art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

JUSTIN FAVELA: CENTRAL AMERICAN Art Exhibition

Justin Favela’s exuberant art is inspired by Latinx culture, art history, and food rendered in layer upon layer of vibrant strips of paper. Favela’s technique recalls piñatas and party decorations — ephemeral forms that signify joy and celebration. The exhibition’s subtitle, Central American, contains multiple meanings, suggesting the artist’s heritage, Iowa’s place in the middle of America, and the strong presence of Central Americans in our state and within the agricultural industry upon which our economy depends. Learn more about the exhibit and plan your visit by hovering your smartphone camera over the QR code.
