Hall of the Gowanus Digital Library

Proteus Gowanus is a gallery and reading room located on the banks of the Gowanus Canal. Proteus links the arts to other disciplines and to the community, including the Hall of the Gowanus, a small mini-museum with art, artifacts, maps and books about the Gowanus Canal. As the site of the Revolutionary Battle of Brooklyn, the locus of vital 19th century industry, and inspiration for present-day artists, writers and small businesses, this polluted waterway has played a central role in the colorful history of Brooklyn. In 2011, The Hall of the Gowanus launched this Gowanus Archive for the benefit of all those interested in the past and future of the Gowanus Canal. This online material is a small portion of our digital archives. Visit us to copy over 66 gigabytes of maps, GIS data, photos and digital sediments accumulated by the community. Perhaps in your perusing, you will meet Gowanda, the Gowanus Seal who did her own research in the Canal in July 2003 and lived to tell the tale.
