ABOUT US The prosserman jcc daycare and preschool experience Built with children in mind, the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool, housed in the David & Esther Freiman Childhood Education Centre, was created to allow children maximum self-expression in order to help them reach their full potential while connecting to Jewish traditions in meaningful ways. However, what makes the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool truly unique is that our children are one generation among the many who come to the Prosserman JCC. As members of our JCC community, children have access to all of the Prosserman JCC’s facilities, which provide plenty of stimulation for budding young minds.

Philosophy, Curriculum and Best Practice Our focus is on early development and incorporating techniques and strategies to ensure that your child receives an advanced education rooted in Jewish history and tradition. Through creative and hands-on experiences, we strive to create an educational and cultural environment to support the development of each child’s social, cognitive, language and motor skills. Our goal is to prepare children both socially and academically for the important opportunities and milestones that will arise in their young lives.

Jewish Life Our interactive curriculum is founded upon the richness of Jewish values and tradition. We incorporate lessons into each program that teach the Hebrew language and place an emphasis on Tzedakah, welcoming guests, acts of kindness and Tikun Olam. Shabbat and holidays are also a large part of our curriculum and are taught through literature, music, exploration and play.

FAMILY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED! All parents want the best for their children, but the Prosserman JCC wants what’s best for your family! When you sign up for our Daycare & Preschool, your family will receive a complimentary membership to the JCC. We hope that you will give us the privilege of being the first step on your child’s lifelong journey of learning and discovery.

TODDLERS (18 MONTHS – 2 1/2 YEARS)

JK (4 YEARS OLD)

The multisensory hands-on curriculum for our youngest students introduces activities that are fun, educational and vital to development. A variety of art materials encourage curiosity, build language and social skills and develop fine motor skills. Sensory activities and simple games encourage counting and recognition skills. While celebrating Jewish holidays and traditions, our toddlers are exposed to simple Hebrew words, blessings and songs. Our caring, dedicated teachers provide a loving atmosphere for our youngest children.

December 31, 2013 The Junior Kindergarten curriculum program focuses on exposing children to literacy and numeracy. Children are encouraged to develop their fine motor skills as they learn how to print letters. Our program is designed to incorporate the “Ontario Kindergarten Program” and the “Early Learning for Every Child” guidelines. Our teachers are always listening to the children to ensure that the children’s interests are included in the curriculum. Hebrew is now offered twice a week to further enhance the values of tzedakah, holiday traditions and Hebrew vocabulary.

PRESCHOOL (2 1/2 - 3 YEARS) When children turn 2 1/2, they are no longer toddlers, They move up to the preschool rooms, where we turn the focus onto building independence and problem-solving skills. The preschool curriculum includes a balance of educational and recreational experiences developed to stimulate a variety of cognitive, fine and gross motor skills that lead to prereading and prenumeracy readiness. The preschool Judaic program continues teaching Jewish values through the celebration of Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Hebrew vocabulary is expanded upon, and the joys of Jewish traditions and experiences are introduced throughout the year.

NURSERY (3 YEARS OLD) by December 31st, 2013 The curriculum for our Nursery program includes many prereading activities. Art includes free expressive opportunities in addition to traditional Judaic creative opportunities. These activities enhance fine motor development while providing for social esteem and social development growth. Our Judaic program now focuses on counting and colours in Hebrew with an introduction to Aleph Bet. Jewish holidays, traditions and Shabbat celebrations continue to be meaningful experiences for the children.

SK (5 YEARS OLD) December 31, 2013 The Senior Kindergarten curriculum focuses on building children’s literacy and numeracy. Guided by our teachers, our students embark on word recognition and begin to read. Their curiosity is challenged upon being exposed to enrichment units, such as science and current events. As with the Junior Kindergarten curriculum, our Senior Kindergarten curriculum is designed to incorporate the “Ontario Kindergarten Program” and the “Early Learning for Every Child” guidelines. The Judaic component of the Graduate Program expands the children’s Hebrew vocabulary while incorporating Hebrew storytelling. “Seeing the World through Jewish Eyes” is the focus for the celebrations of the Jewish holidays and traditions. In Senior Kindergarten, we begin preparing for life beyond the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool as we equip the children with the skills they will need to succeed in primary school. INTERACTIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS CENTRE FOR DYNAMIC LEARNING (CDL) To provide the Jewish community with diverse learning programs and affordable experiences which are engaging, interactive and intellectually stimulating; as well as opportunities for satisfying volunteer involvement. As CDL enters into its third year, we have an array of interesting and meaningful programs for you this coming fall and winter.

DESIGN YOUR OWN LEARNING... HAVE YOUR SAY

BOOK CLUB Do you enjoy reading? Join the CDL Book Club and meet once a month to participate in a meaningful discussion with other educated, respectful participants, with diverse opinions. The book club will be facilited by Shelly Mestle, who will ensure discussions are focused and meaningful for all participants.

What topics would you like to learn about? Help design stimulating programs that meet the needs of inquiring minds like yours. For the past two years, CDL has offered timely, thought-provoking programs and courses to meet a wide range of interests and concerns. Now you can help move CDL to the next level of interactive learning by sharing your thoughts with planners and fellow “Boomers & Beyond” in an open exchange of ideas. Here’s your chance to be part of the process for one session only!

PHILOSOPHY CAFÉ This is a great opportunity for people to get together and discuss some of life’s big questions (for example, “what is the meaning of life?” “What is the good life and how can we get there?”). These and other issues will engender agreement and lively debate at CDL’s ongoing Philosophy Café. Be prepared for short readings and spirited discussion while enjoying some refreshments.

ETHICS Back by popular demand!!! CDL’s two successful series, in 2011 and 2012, will continue with three more sessions on practical ethics in the fall. Topics such as: “Ethics at the end of life - who decides what?”, “Is ‘business ethics’ an oxymoron?”, “Should any of our freedoms be unlimited?” Join us in the fall, listen to our expert presenters and discuss with panelists and other participants.

LAW AND ORDER

THE HISTORY OF SYMPHONY:

This was a ground-breaking legal program that dramatized and examined the workings of the American justice system and addressed America’s social inequities and was a drama about morals. Kevin Courrier, who cowrote a critical appraisal book on “Law & Order,” will show and examine two episodes. Discussion groups will be facilitated by CDL members.

Hear It Like You Have Never Heard it Before! Trace this magnificent art form from its preclassical origins, with stops along our journey to marvel at some examples, and then, ask the question: “Where do you go next?” Presenter: Beverlee Swayze, Music Educator

THE COUPLE (125 MIN)

DEFAMATION (91 MIN)

English This film centers on a German couple during World War II in Nazi Germany. The couple works for a wealthy Jewish industrialist who, because of his wealth, is afforded a chance to “buy” his freedom from the Nazis. This suspenseful movie explores love, hope and the determination of the human spirit in the face of evil.

English Intent on shaking up the ultimate ‘sacred cow’ for Jews, Israeli director Yoav Shamir embarks on a provocative quest to answer, “What is anti-Semitism today?” Does it remain a dangerous and immediate threat? Is it a scare tactic used by right-wing Zionists to discredit their critics? His findings are shocking, enlightening and often wryly funny.

TZVEY SHVESTER (TWO SISTERS) (82 MIN) Yiddish/English subtitles This movie tells the real story of Betty Glickstein, a young girl who promises her dying mother that she will raise her younger sister, Sally. From the young age of thirteen, Betty works tirelessly to provide her sister with every advantage and sacrifices her own happiness, including the man she loves.

THE POLICEMAN (87 MIN) Hebrew/English subtitles Azulai is a policeman in Jaffa, whose incompetence is only matched by his soft-heartedness. His superiors want to send him to early retirement, but he would like to stay on the force, and the criminals of Jaffa don’t want to see him leave either. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

YIDL MITN FIDL (YIDL WITH HER FIDDLE) (92 MIN) Yiddish/English subtitles Molly Picon plays Yidl, a young woman who poses as a man in order to join a band of traveling musicians. She falls in love with one of her colleagues with delightfully humorous results. Filled with music and charm, this film will amuse and entertain.

ART APPRECIATION WITH OSNAT LIPPA THE FRIENDSHIP AND RIVALRY BETWEEN MATISSE AND PICASSO Seeing Matisse and Picasso through each other’s eyes allows the viewer to look at modern art with the same sense of discovery that electrified the artists and their friends and shocked their critics. This three part series will explore the life and work of each of these artists as well as compare a few of their selected masterpieces.

FILM LECTURE SERIES WITH

ISRAELI ART IN THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AND THE CONTEMPORARY ISRAELI ART SCENE We will explore the development of the modern Jewish artistic culture in Israel in the twentieth century, looking into this dynamic creative hub and its leading artists. We will also examine the rich and unique contemporary art scene. Some artists reviewed: Reuven Rubin, Mordecai Ardon, Chana Orloff, Anna Ticho and others.

KEVIN COURIER

SAM PECKINPAH’S

LOS ANGELES

American Dreams More than any other modern director Sam Peckinpah changed the face of cinema. He was also a victim of his own excesses and demons, and his movies (The Wild Bunch, Billy the Kid) often reflected that turmoil. This series takes us through the turbulent themes in Sam Peckinpah’s work to reveal an artist whose movies are a rich and complex examination of the American experience.

City of Dreams This series focuses on a number of pictures that emerged from the very home of the dream factory: Hollywood. The films include American movies about Tinsel Town (A Star is Born, The Player), film noir (Double Indemnity, Chinatown), romance (L.A. Story, Tequila Sunrise), science fiction (Blade Runner) and parody (Death Becomes Her).

A Journey Through The Best of Foreign-Language Cinema For North Americans who feel that our own films have been diminished by rampant commercialism, foreign-language pictures have been the sole source of movie pleasure. Are foreign-language pictures superior to our own movies? This series opens the door to cultures different from our own and demonstrates the manner in which we are very much alike. Films by Bergman, Dreyer and Renoir to be reviewed.

Yet More Best Movies You Have Never Seen This series brings us MORE enticing dramas, documentaries, comedies and adaptations which unjustly disappeared without a trace. Kevin introduces clips from some of the gems that Hollywood ignored and audiences forgot or simply never saw. The series examines how and why numerous films from a variety of genres ended up produced and abandoned.
