PROPLATE CEO STATEMENT
EXTERNAL TRENDS
Over the past year, we heard increasing fears of a recession, but the outcome remained strong. We believe that our customers have maintained a robust position in their respective markets. The world of European steel is doing relatively well thanks to a healthy market but also because of the protective tariffs against China, which have led to a considerable rise in steel prices in recent years. Causes of concern for steel manufacturers are primarily declines in automotive industry volumes and substantial increases in iron ore prices. In the US, President Trump imposed tariffs on steel to protect the domestic market. Besides the obvious negative aspects of any trade barriers, we see no direct obstacles to Proplate’s daily operations. Paradoxically enough, it can even benefit us because some customers are asking for processed products from across the Atlantic instead of importing plate to the United States. This enables them to bypass the tariffs. We came up with a plan for the US market during the year, according to which we are starting a new company in Chicago in August, Proplate USA Inc. We see great opportunities here and we need to be on site so we can meet our customers regularly easier. The growth of the market for construction machinery and cranes is now slowing down on a global scale. However, the market for wind power is booming and we see an equally strong market for mining investments. The forklift market remains robust driven by the major logistics centers formed on the heels of the strong growth of e-commerce. CUSTOMERS
We believe we are at our best when our customers’ ways of working, approach and requirements are in alignment with our values, our expertise and our willingness to invest our way into the future. This is why we choose our customers carefully based on clearly defined criteria. Our core values are long-term thinking, engagement, respect and bravery. These values guide our actions internally and in our relationships with our customers and with the world around us. In addition to our drive to collaborate in long-term partnerships, we use six main criteria when choosing our customers: manufacturing in special steel, large components, scheduled deliveries, multiple process steps, high volume and high quality requirements. PROPLATE
Matching our values to our main criteria for selecting customers sends us a clear message about what we need to do– further strengthen our expertise in new value-adding processes. Welding is an example of a new area in which we have already initiated a substantial investment in expertise and technical equipment. During the year, we also won several interesting contracts and projects where welding in advanced materials is a key part of the delivery. Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock in Germany is one of the customers for which welding in special steel plays a crucial role. We also significantly expanded volumes to Toyota Material Handling, especially for welded products. In line with our strategy, we made major investments over the past year in our manufacturing plant, including greater painting capacity, doubled blasting capacity, a new cutting machine, new forklifts, reconstruction projects, and the installation of a new welding robot. These investments led to both capacity increases and work environment improvements. We look forward with confidence to the coming fiscal year, which we are now entering into with continued investments and with an exciting establishment on the US market.

PROPLATE LIFTING – WORLD-LEADING SUPPLIER TO THE CRANE INDUSTRY
Proplate is the world’s leading manufacturer of straps and other critical components for the crane industry. Among customers who rely on our expertise are global names such as Liebherr, Kobelco and Manitowoc.
Proplate is the world’s leading supplier of straps for lifting cranes. Our Proplate Straps are extremely critical components in crawler cranes, harbor cranes, mobile cranes and special cranes. The straps are the crane components subjected to the greatest stress, especially in crawler cranes, where they link the boom and counterweights and must withstand lifting of up to 3 000 tons. THE BEST MATERIALS
The quality requirements are extremely high and our tests are therefore extremely accurate. Proplate Straps are made of high-strength structural steel. We use the best materials on the market. Primarily we collaborate with SSAB, but also with Dillinger Hütte. A hardened structural steel that is intended to return to its original shape after heavy loading is difficult to handle, especially in manufacturing long and thin straps. It takes long experience and expertise to succeed. FULL TRACEABILITY
Our facility is specially adapted for manufacturing long, heavy and complicated items. Before leaving the factory, the straps are tested with magnetic powder to ensure that they are crack free. Of course, we also have full traceability back to the original plate.

PROPLATE WIND
PROPLATE WIND – STABLE WHERE IT BLOWS THE HARDEST At Proplate in Oxelösund, we manufacture foundation solutions for wind farms worldwide. Leading actors like Nordex Acciona Windpower, Envision and Skanska rely on our solutions. PROPLATE SOIL SECURE
The traditional gravity foundation bolt basket is known as Proplate Soil Secure. It is designed for wind turbines to be erected on land without contact with rock. The bolt basket is tailor-made according to the tower manufacturer’s specifications. PROPLATE MIXED SECURE
Mixed substrate where soil and gravel cover bedrock can often be a challenge. Proplate Mixed Secure is the secure solution. The system is always adapted to the circumstances of the site and consists of an optimized bolt basket in combination with long rock anchors. PROPLATE ROCK SECURE
For stable anchoring of wind turbines located directly on rock, Proplate Rock Secure is the choice. The anchorage consists of a very strong steel ring with two extra holes for rock anchors. The foundation is extremely strong and holds where it blows the hardest.
Wind turbines must be firmly anchored. Proplate manufactures foundations that are safe regardless of the substrate. We offer complete solutions for soil, gravel and rock.

PROPLATE PARTS – WHEN THE REQUIREMENTS ARE EXTREMELY HIGH
“The demand for welded components has increased sharply and we have met it with large investments in our welding capacity, not least with the new welding robot.” – Sales Director Ian Hardy
We manufacture steel components for leading manufacturers of machines and industrial equipment worldwide. Our customers are in many different industries, from mining companies such as Metso and Epiroc to truck manufacturer Toyota Material Handling. The challenges differ, but the need for quality and short lead times is common to all. FINISHED COMPONENTS
Our factory is adapted for efficient and flexible production at all stages. Our complete production chain and large capacity mean that we can not only meet our customers’ high demands for size, volume and precision, but we can also provide shorter lead times than our competitors. HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS
Proplate is independent of the steel supplier and cooperates with the market’s leading steel manufacturer. In this way, we make it possible for our customers to integrate their existing supply chain with Proplate in an efficient and smooth collaboration. Our geographical proximity to SSAB means that we can shorten the delivery times for high-quality steel. Proximity also contributes to increased sustainability when the steel does not have to be transported over long distances and the scrap is taken care of at Oxelösund.

COOPERATION PROVIDES WORLD-CLASS QUALITY Cutting, machining and welding SSAB’s high-strength steel requires specific expertise and precision. Those are Proplate qualities. “They are unique in Scandinavia”, said Jakob Stenström, SSAB Special Steel’s Scandinavian Sales Manager. Together, SSAB and Proplate deliver the highest quality. And they do so regularly. The companies also have a clear focus on the end-user. “We don’t just sell a piece of steel, but a cut piece, a component. We are constantly working closely with the customer’s requirements.” Stenström emphasizes the importance of building a relationship with the endusers. Knowing how the components work in each application – for example, in a crane, a truck bed, a beam – is invaluable. Several large prestige customers, including German Liebherr, have discovered the companies’ joint, reliable quality.
“It’s a great concept. Proplate is extremely good at cutting. The dimensions are accurate and the tolerances high. Quality thinking permeates the entire company”, said Stenström, “I have been working at SSAB since 2005 and seen many workshops”. Few operations have Proplate’s level of competence, he believes. Delivering at the top level over time and with precision in every detail is a clear goal. “It’s not just Max Björk’s CEOwords; it’s about the whole company. It doesn’t matter who you are talking to, everyone is familiar with the quality thinking.” NEIGHBORS IN REALITY
The fact that SSAB and Proplate are so closely situated in Oxelösund facilitates cooperation. “Meeting face-to-face certainly plays a role.” Neighbors know each other. The contact becomes informal. It is also im portant in a global and digitized world. The simple and close solutions provide more efficient flows. The environmental benefits are also clear. “We benefit from each other, and it creates added value for both the customer and the climate.” WANT TO DO MORE
The two companies see good development opportunities in the market and sector. “We will continue together and we want to do more. Only our creativity sets the limits”, said the SSAB Sales Manager.
QUALITY CONCEPT
The combination of high quality basic materials and the cutting expertise is the foundation of the collaboration.

HEALTH
BETTER FITNESS ON THE JOB >> Proplate’s employees get plenty of exercise on the job. In fact, working out is one of the employees’ duties at Proplate. Every week, all machines and computers are turned off for two hours while we devote ourselves to different forms of fitness activities. Among these activities are group activities with a private trainer. The sessions are run either in our own halls or outdoors. Getting to exercise during working hours is a simple, practical way to give employees the opportunity to improve their health. We are convinced that it also makes a positive impact on our business.
32
PROPLATE HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY
PROPLATE IS INVESTING SUSTAINABLY “We offer our customers a long-term partnership that is both financially and environmentally friendly”, says Josefine Lilja, Proplate’s Communications Manager. The entire production chain, from steel manufacturers to end-users, is changing to sustainable production and operation. As a manufacturer of steel components, Proplate is in the middle of this chain. “Sustainability is central to our production”, says Lilja. LEAST SCRAP POSSIBLE
By using specially adapted sizes on the plates and precision cutting, the material is used to the maximum – the least possible scrap is left behind. Of course, all material that is not used is recycled. “Steel can be used over and over again without diminishing the quality.” A large part of the steel used by Proplate comes from neighboring
SSAB. Thanks to the proximity to this world-leading steel manufacturer, there is no need to transport raw materials. Considering that Proplate cuts up to 50 000 tons of plate each year, many trucking miles are saved. FEWER LONG-HAULS
The next part of the sustainable chain regards the delivery of finished components. All transportation is environmentally optimized. The railway and maritime facilities, both nearby, are used to the greatest extent possible. When transporting with trucks, the goal is for the vehicles to be fully loaded and often the containers are
loaded from truck to train for that part of the route where it is possible. SUSTAINABLE COLLABORATION
Collaborating with other sustainable actors is fundamental for Proplate. “For example, the wind turbine industry is one of our most important customer groups.” Josefine Lilja also points to other customers’ clear transition towards sustainability. The mining industry, for example Epiroc, for which Proplate supplies components, is changing its machines from diesel to electricity, and SSAB promises fossil-free steel manufacturing by 2045.
Proplate is constantly working to improve the business’s sustainability. It is just as obvious as our aiming for greater heights in everything else we do.
Proplate is quality-certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) according to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015
