Introduction

As photographers you have more than likely all had Canvas Prints made for your clients. How have you made your choice? Cost or Quality? If you went for the cost options then sacrifices would have to be made in materials to achieve a lower price and the end product and quality would reflect this. If you went the quality option then prices would be a little more expensive overall solely due to the better quality materials used. This route would result in a superior product. Not all Canvas Prints are the same, which is why I have put together this information guide to help you understand why Canvas Prints from Prophoto Solutions are the best and linked with our custom profiled work flow and our 12 colour printers you can be assured of the best quality that is available today and at a competitive price.

Canvas Media

How many suppliers have made a point of telling you that they use a ‘Bright White’ canvas? To achieve a bright white surface Optical Brightener Additives (commonly referred to as “OBA’s”) are widely used in paper and canvas coatings, textiles, and laundry detergents to increase the perceived “whiteness” of the treated products. OBA’s work by absorbing light from the (invisible) ultra-violet end of the spectrum and emitting light in the (visible) blue/white range of the spectrum. This “shift” in the frequency of light energy, results in a whiter and brighter appearance of the treated product. While OBA’s appear to be an effective solution for enhancing the whiteness of inkjet media, OBAs can pose a serious threat to the integrity and longevity of a print by causing metamerism, which leads to color shifts and by accelerating yellowing over time. This is why we use a canvas that is certified OBA free. It delivers exceptional colour gamut & dmax for incredible print quality and also means it is archival certified for 100+ years. This 450gsm canvas makes it the most stable platform on which to print photographs and fine art giclees without the metamerism issues or colour shift issues inherent on other canvases. It is one of a very few that has passed a prestigious Blue Wool Test too and is certified that it meets the Archival Standards set forth by the Fine Art Trade Guild for pH and lightfastness.

Canvas Protection

Some suppliers use plastic film to seal the prints, which look plastic and shiny and do not show your image to it’s fullest potential. All our Canvas Prints are spray varnished with a water based lacquer. Glamour II Veneer (giclee varnish) is an award-winning and proprietary canvas varnish and has been developed to protect, preserve and enhance fine art and photographic prints produced on digital inkjet printers. This non-yellowing, water based canvas varnish is a perfect solution for inkjet print finishing. Glamour II will enhance the colour of pigmented inks on matt media and increase resistance to image fading. It will protect your images against moisture and abrasion. The varnish has a very matt finish which is undetectable and it does not shine unlike satin or gloss finishes and makes for a more natural looking image.

Canvas Stretcher Bars

Our Premium Stretcher Bar creates an exhibition standard canvas frame, measuring 44mm x 44mm. It is ideally suited for larger prints and even the smaller ones stand out from the crowd. This deep profile stretcher bar helps to upsell and it is a firm favorite among pro photographers and artists. This pine stretcher bar is manufactured in Europe to very high standards from the best grade redwood pine, which means that the bars are clean, dry, and knot free as well as being strong and straight. Although not necessary, every bar from 30 and over will have a brace bar to keep the frame true and straight. The bars have a lovely weight and feel in the hand as well as being super smooth which all contributes to a higher quality stretched framed print which can’t fail to be appreciated by your clients. All the bars are 100% FSC accredited and are sourced from well-managed, renewable stock in a country that enforces strict management policies. Wooden wedges are used to tighten the canvas once wrapped and have 2 in every corner. Plastic wedges are cheaper but they probably look it too so ours are all wood. There are cheaper bars on the market but our customers can be assured of knowing their stretcher bars are the best available.

Canvas Finishing

Corner folds are critical which is why all ours are hand stretched, folded and trimmed ensuring the corners have no cracking. The rear is as important too so the canvas is trimmed and the edges are tapped to keep it looking neat. So as not to damage the wall or your print, thick felt bumpers are put onto the corners for that extra protection. A special canvas hanger is fitted to all our Canvas Prints to make it easy to hang on the wall and all are supplied with picture hooks.
