Nurse retires from hospice after 21 years

A

FTER making a difference for 21 years to the lives of thousands of people with life-limiting illnesses, senior nurse Chris Dyer has retired from Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Chris, from Epworth, led the day care nursing team and every day she felt truly humbled working at the hospice on Burringham Road in Scunthorpe. She originally started at the hospice as a bank nurse before taking on a permanent post and then worked her way up to the senior position. “It’s been part of my life for so many years and I’m going to dearly miss being so close to patients and working with my close-knit team on a daily basis,” said Chris who has previously worked as a Marie Curie nurse and for Lincoln Health as a palliative care nurse in the community. “I was part of such a fantastic team and we gelled together so well. Nearly all of the team have been at Lindsey Lodge for years and years because they enjoy their jobs so much. “I’ve genuinely made so many good friends and, to say goodbye, 10 colleagues took me for a wonderful surprise weekend to Harrogate.”

„ RETIRING: Chris Dyer, senior nurse from Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

CONTACT INFORMATION: Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Burringham Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN17 2AA MAIN RECEPTION: 01724 270835 EMAIL: enquiries@lindseylodgehospice. org.uk WEBSITE: www.lindseylodgehospice. org.uk Registered Charity No 702871

Chris has seen the hospice completely transform and expand over the years. She said: “It’s changed beyond recognition and the hospice now makes an even bigger impact on people’s lives in North Lincolnshire. “The hospice currently takes around 14 to 17 patients a day and when I first started it was around five patients a day! “Also there are so many more specialist facilities such as an in-patient unit, lymphoedema clinic, bereavement and family support service, and facilities for loved ones to stay over. “I’ve absolutely loved my job. Every single day was different and I felt so lucky that patients shared so many touching and personal stories with me that they’ve never shared with anyone before. It’s humbling and it puts your life in perspective.” Chris retired on Friday, 1st July and was planning to celebrate with a long-trip away with her husband. She’s also a keen gardener and will enjoy time at her allotment and with her family who live away. She added: “I’m ready for a break, however I won’t be a stranger to the hospice as I’ll join the Isle of Axholme supporters group so I can pass on my first-hand knowledge and support to the public.”

Gardens are flourishing in aid of hospice Lindsey Lodge Hospice predicts to raise around £10,000 through their popular Open Gardens programme which runs throughout the summer. Hundreds of people have attended beautiful gardens across the North Lincolnshire region in order to support vital care for people with end of life illnesses. Head of fundraising at Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Mel Banham, said: “This is the seventh year that garden owners have kindly opened to help Lindsey Lodge Hospice. “Gardens range from small individual gardens to groups of gardens opening together and the summer long event runs until October so there are still some gardens left to see! “It’s a great opportunity to chat to garden

and plant lovers but also to share knowledge and experience. For visitors it’s a very friendly way to find out about what works in various gardens, see what can be achieved and eat homemade cake! “We want to say a big thank you to everyone who kindly opened their gardens and to those who attended.”

Opening soon is a beautiful garden in Elsham with around half an acre of sloping garden which will open on Sunday, 21st August. It has architectural focal points and an exciting mixture of flamboyant and quintessentially English plants and will be open 10.30am to 5pm at the Old Quarry Lodge on 15 Barnetby Lane. Admission costs £4. Also on Saturday, 1st October in Blyton a beautiful garden will open where you will be able to bring a small container to fill with flowers for an extra donation. It’s at Catchwater Farm on Carr Lane from 1pm to 4pm and it’s £3 entry including refreshments. Visit the Events section at www. lindseylodgehospice.org.uk

World-renowned terminally ill artist raises £8,000 for hospice AN internationally acclaimed artist who is terminally ill is overjoyed with selling over 200 original paintings at his recent art sale in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Dennis Nash, from Hibbaldstow, spent several days and nights preparing for the sale even though he is battling four types of cancer in order to say thank you for the care he’s receiving from the hospice on Burringham Road. In total the huge sum of £8,000 was raised from the sale of his “impressionist realism” artwork which will pay for nearly

seven months’ worth of life-saving oxygen for the local people with life-limiting illnesses such as heart failure and multiple sclerosis. Dennis’s prognosis was until the end of June but he was determined to surpass this so he could celebrate his daughter’s birthday in September. He said: “It was a bit of touch and go because I wasn’t feeling great the week before the art sale so I was unsure if I would be able to make it. “However I felt a lot better and was pleased I could make the sale and see my art work being sold to hundreds of people in aid of such a worthy cause! “In the first few hours an amazing £3,000 was made. People were queuing out the door to get bargains because some pieces worth £1,000 were sold for just £100!” Dennis’s artwork is sold around the world, especially to a large source of customers in Malta and in the prestigious Gallery 18 in Jersey, however his biggest claim to fame is painting a piece for Her Majesty’s private secretary’s apartment. He added: “We were overwhelmed with the support we received from people helping out and to those who turned up to buy my artwork from around the Lincolnshire area. “I’m still keeping busy by painting commissioned art work.” Dennis still has some paintings for sale in aid of the hospice. If you would to view his work or to purchase one please email him on dennisnash47@icloud.com

Post-Brexit: Now is the time to review your mortgage IN light of the recent Brexit result there has been a lot of speculation over whether house prices will fall and which way interest rates could go. In times like these it’s important to remain calm, consider your options, and avoid making any decisions in haste. Like many others, you will no doubt be working hard to pay off your mortgage as soon as possible to give you some breathing space for the future, whether that’s helping to support your children through university or investing in your all-important retirement fund, and there’s no reason why that still can’t be your top priority. Although we cannot predict whether interest rates will rise or fall just yet, we can still take a look at the market as it stands now and see what it has to offer. When it comes to finding the right mortgage deal, there are still options available to you. We currently have access to over 11,000 mortgage products from 90+ lenders so if you are looking to remortgage there’s a good chance we will be able to find something to suit your circumstances. „ REVIEWING YOUR FINANCES: It is always advisable to review your finances every once in a while, as your personal circumstances can change, so now could be as good a time as any to revisit your financial position.

Reviewing your mortgage annually will give you a head start on any deals that are to be had at that moment in time, so it’s always worthwhile keeping an eye on whatever offers are circling the market. If you are considering your financial position you might also want to review what protection you have in place should your circumstances change. Regardless of the referendum results, none of us are able to predict the future so being prepared for all eventualities, and taking out mortgage protection, is always an advisable move.

„ SPEAK TO MORTGAGE ADVICE BUREAU: A clearer picture of the housing market will hopefully come to light over the upcoming weeks, in the wake of the Brexit news. In the meantime, if you’re worried about how interest rates could affect you and your future decisions, then our professional mortgage advisers are on hand to offer their expert advice. We can either sit down face-to-face with you or speak over the phone, whichever you prefer, and help you find the most suitable mortgage rate to suit your lifestyle.

We will also manage the application process from beginning to end, helping move things along as smoothly as possible. Trevor Adams is from Mortgage Advice Bureau. For further information, or to arrange an appointment either at Starkey&Brown premises or at your home, call 01522 845 845 or email at trevor.adams@mab. org.uk.

Planning ahead will help you avoid moving day stresses MOVING home is one of the most stressful things we will do in our lifetime. And whatever your reason for moving, keeping stress levels down on moving day is crucial. Trying to remember every single thing you need to do is difficult, the list just gets longer and longer. So keep your head straight on the day with our moving day tips checklist... WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR MOVING DATE

†

ARRANGE A REMOVAL COMPANY Once you’ve been given a date organise a removal company. Go on recommendations rather than price. † PARKING PERMITS If your new house requires you to have a resident’s parking permit, apply for it well in advance. Local councils will have information on its website. † TRANSFER YOUR TV LICENCE If you haven’t transferred your TV licence or bought a new one for your new home, visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk † CLEAR OUT Moving home is the perfect time for a clear out. But you need to be ruthless. There’s no point in transferring junk from one home to another, so get rid. † PACK NON-ESSENTIAL ITEMS Put non-essentials in a spare room if you have one, or to one side leaving only the most vital items to pack on the day. † BROADBAND/MEDIA SUBSCRIPTIONS Contact all media providers with your change of address. † REGISTER WITH DOCTOR If you are moving to a new area tell your doctor and register with a new one. Your current surgery will be able to help you. † LET SCHOOLS KNOW If your children need to move schools, this needs to be done as soon as possible. If they don’t need to move schools, inform them of your new address.

† COLLECT ALL YOUR SPARE KEYS Ensure you collect all keys to your old property so you can hand them to the new owners, including keys to windows, the garage and any outbuildings. † REDIRECT YOU POST Post crosses over for some time after a house move, so by getting your post redirected you’ll ensure you don’t miss out on any important documents. † INFORM THE BANK Tell banks and building societies to make sure all your statements, new cards etc are delivered to the right address. † PACK AN ESSENTIALS BOX A screwdriver and hammer will come in handy, plus the most important ones - tea, coffee, sugar, a kettle, mugs and spoons. A few packs of biscuits and fruit will keep energy levels up. And throw a few first aid items in too. ONE WEEK TO GO

† MAKE A PLAN The move will run a lot smoother if you have a rough idea of where your furniture will be going. This is particularly useful for those moving to a larger home with numerous rooms. Mark all boxes clearly for the room they need to be taken to. † COUNCIL TAX Inform your local council of your change of address so they can get you on the correct band for your new property. † DEFROST FRIDGE/FREEZER Make sure you eat all you can before you throw old contents out and give it a clean.

† LOOK AFTER THE PETS Moving home is extremely stressful to pets. Try and take them to friends or family for the day. When everything has settled down introduce them to their new home. A FEW DAYS BEFORE

† CHANGE INSURANCE POLICIES A quick phone call is all that’s required to update your new address. These include car, home, life, travel, pet and any other insurances you may have. † TELL DVLA Avoid fines from DVLA by updating your driving licence. ON DAY DAY

† LOCK UP Check everywhere is locked up before you leave. Garages, sheds, windows, doors and outdoor storage units. † TAKE METER READINGS As you leave your home for the last time, take note of your readings. If you’ve packed your pen and paper take a picture of them on your phone and inform your utility providers as soon as possible.
