WARTIME BRIDGEND WWI & WWII Re-Enactment Day On Saturday 16th June Bridgend Town Centre was transported back in time once again for the hugely successful free Wartime Bridgend event. Despite the slightly damp weather, Bridgend Town Centre welcomed thousands of visitors to the town, growing on the success of last year’s Wartime event. There was plenty for the whole family to see and do; this year’s event featured a full size replica of a WWI Bristol Scout Bi-Plane, live entertainment featuring Ricky Hunter,

Amanda Beaumont, female acapella group ’Heavenly’ and a George Formby act. For younger members of the family there was a vintage Punch and Judy show, fairground attractions, mini vintage makeovers, wartime crafts and period games. Once again Sir Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Montgomery toured the town giving speeches and speaking to the public. Fabulous vintage vehicles of the time were on display with enthusiasts showing off their

prized modes of transport – together with a multitude of realistic demonstrations from experts showing how life had to be lived in that era.

Stalls included, WWII Codes and Code Breaking, 1940s Home Guard, Welsh WWII Infantry, Island Farm Hut 9 Preservation Group, Glamorgan Archives, Barry at War and Porthcawl Museum with their array of suffragettes. Bang on Brewery brewed wartime beers and Bridgend allotmenteers showed how the “Dig for Victory” Campaign was put into reality. Various local military organisations added their expertise and support to the event whilst Bridgend Lions ran a wartime book stall and once again stewarded the event along with Bridgend Town Council staff. Local historian John Dunkley-Williams ran informative wartime walks. There was an Exhibition Centre at Carnegie House with exhibits from local historian Natalie Murphy, Past Lives

Museum owner, curator, and archivist Cheryl Hart and collector and wartime enthusiast Michael Ridley. The Town was full of activity and alongside the Wartime event, a CF31 Bid Street Market was held in Caroline Street, a Craft Fayre was held in the Indoor Market, there were children’s activities in the Rhiw Shopping Centre and St Johns House on Newcastle Hill was open day contributing to a wonderful overall Town Centre experience. A remembrance service was held at the Bridgend War Memorial, conducted by Rev. Rachel Wheeler. The Wartime event was organised by Bridgend Town Council, with support from the traders, CF31 BID, BCBC and sponsorship from Watts and Morgan and Best Western Heronston Hotel. Thank you to all that participated and contributed to this fantastic successful Town Centre event and all that came and enjoyed the day!

Santander’s data shows that homeowners could save £2,268 a year if they were able to purchase a property rather than rent. The average monthly rent in the UK is currently £912 per household, compared to monthly repayments of £723 for the average first-time buyer household. Homeowners could save an average of £189 a month or £2,268 a year compared to renters. Q. I completed on my new home in October. Despite repeated prompts to my solicitor I still don’t have the final documents. They say they are awaiting confirmation of the seller’s discharge of their mortgage. I want to build an extension and will need these documents. How can I pressure the solicitor to speed things up?

A. You can apply for planning permission even though there has been a delay with registration of your title to the property at the Land Registry. On completion of the sale the seller’s solicitors should have redeemed the mortgage and requested evidence of discharge. Usually the lender writes to the seller’s solicitors acknowledging receipt of the funds and confirming that an electronic discharge has been sent to the Land Registry. That written confirmation should have been sent by the seller’s solicitors to your solicitor. After completion your solicitor should have paid any stamp duty that was due and applied to register your title at the Land Registry. If the seller’s mortgage has not been redeemed, your solicitor should know as the Land Registry will either cancel the application as it cannot be processed without evidence of discharge; raise a requisition in respect of the outstanding mortgage, or register your title to the property without removing the seller’s lender’s charge, in which case your solicitor should have been told. This registration process can often take several weeks, even longer in some instances, due to Land Registry delays.

FUN IN THE SUN WITH DOGS TRUST BRIDGEND There were lots of waggy tails in Pencoed this weekend when hundreds of local dogs and their families enjoyed the sunshine at the annual Dogs Trust Bridgend fun day. Are millennials hopeless around the house? WELL over half of people wrongly assume that millennials are useless when it comes to carrying out practical jobs around the home, according to new research by the Federation of Master Builders. According to the research, 57% of Brits think that millennials are inept. However, the following shows the top ten jobs 18-34 year olds have completed: 1) 70% have defrosted a freezer;

6) 49% have watched a DIY ‘how to’ video;

2) 66% have hung pictures or photo frames on a wall;

7) 48% have sewn a button;

3) 63% have put together flat-pack furniture;

8) 44% have bled a radiator;

4) 58% have painted a wall or piece of furniture;

9) 43% have changed a fuse in a plug;

5) 57% have hung curtains;

10) 36% have put up a shelf.

BRIAN Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Society is wrong to assume that the technical know-how of your typical millennial begins and ends with their smart phone. Well over half of Brits think that those aged 18-34 fall short when it comes to carrying out hands-on tasks around the home. There’s a popular misconception that most young people rely on their parents to complete jobs around the house for them – either through a lack of interest or a lack of ability, or both. However, our research shows that millennials are handier than many give them credit for.

Number of interest-only mortgages is down by 46 per cent in 6 years THE latest data and analysis from UK Finance has revealed that interest only mortgages have gone into decline after years of ‘extravagant lending policies’ in the early 2000’s. According to UK Finance, the number of interest-only mortgages has almost halved in the past six years, down 46% since 2012 to 1.7 million outstanding mortgages. The total value of the interest-only mortgage book is £250 billion, down 37% in the same period. There were 1,293,000 pure interest-only mortgages outstanding at the end of 2017, a 14.9% fall over the last year, alongside 429,000 partial mortgages outstanding, a 2.1% rise. The number of interest-only

loans at over 75% LTV fell by 13.9% in 2017. Loans at these higher loan-to-value ratios now make up 13% of the total, compared to 16% in 2016 and 36% in 2012. Separate analysis by UK Finance reveals that of the one million interest-only loans due to mature by 2020 that were live at the end of 2012, only around 200,000 now remain. Jackie Bennett, director of mortgages at UK Finance, said: “The number of outstanding interest-only loans has halved in the past six years, with a particularly steep decline in higher loan-to-value mortgages. Many borrowers continue to redeem ahead of schedule or switch to a repayment mortgage.
