EDITOR S NOTES FROM THE
Tamoor Abasi
Tallat Ch. Dear Readers,
This year, we are celebrating, our three years, of glorious publication. Looking back, the idea of ICA, is still in its infancy. But, International Culture and Art Magazine is an absolute reality. Over this 3 years time, we tried our best to go into publish by meeting our strict deadlines. Today, we may cherish the feeling that we introduced uniquely exclusive and traditionaly distinct Pakistani culture to the world. Since our magazine's beginning, we tried to explore the undiscovered aspects of our cultural life as a nation. Further, we took our readers to the international art scene and mined the developments of an ever growing, lively global art scene. It was not possible without our dedicated contributors, loyal readership and beloved sponsors. Last but not least, the foreign missions and embassies, always kept their hearts open for us, so that we may spread this native fragrance across the borders. In return, we dispersed the aroma of their tastes and traditions, back home. Wishing everyone a Happy Anniversary for our third triumphant year!

O
ne had known Ziarat as a place that our revered Quaid-e-Azam loved and spent his last few months of his life there. The Ex Official Residence of the Commissioner of Ziarat, later known as the Quaid’s Residency, which was built in 1882, has a lot of history
behind it. How of much of importance does this place have can be judged from the fact, that the red-coloured Rs 100 Pak Rupee bill carries the picture of the Quaid on the front and Quaid-e-Azam Residency in Ziarat, on its back. It is here that the Quaid spent some of his most memorable days. The Ziarat Residency was attacked by radical terrorists, numbering four to five, riding on motor cycles, torched it around midnight on 15 May 2013. It evoked

feelings of rage amongst people all across the nation and internationally. It was considered a national loss, because this heritage monument is closely identified with the Quaid-e-Azam. Mr Jinnah stayed in Ziarat from the end of June 1948 through August 13, 1948, where he was attended by his sister, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and his doctor Colonel Ilahi Bakhsh. The Residency was rebuilt by the Pakistan Army and restored to its original form as was best possible. The Residency contains the personal furniture used by the Quaid, Miss Jinnah and Colonel Illahi and few personal effects. HQ FC Balochistan, that was given the
What is Ziarat and how does this place get the name Ziarat? The original name of this hill station was called “Gwashki” or “Ghoskai” till the name was changed in 1886 to Ziarat after the tomb of a local saint Mian Abdul Hakim alias Kharwari Baba. One would wonder who was this saint? Kharwari Baba, rendered great services to the cause of Islam in the early 18th century. His shrine is situated about 9 km from the town and a large number of people who visit Ziarat go to the Mazar to offer Fateha. The shrine is located at a distance of 8 km from the Ziarat town, the valley below the JUNE - 2022

is now a National Monument. The local people believe that the Quaide-Azam had in fact breathed his last here in Ziarat, contrary to the official reports that he expired in Karachi on 11 September, 1948, the day he was shifted there from Ziarat. The residency building is a majestic piece of architecture, but people visit it primarily for its association with the leader. Ziarat is situated 133 km (3 hours by car) from Quetta, Ziarat is a holiday resort amidst one of the largest and oldest Juniper forests in the world. It is said that some of the Juniper trees are as old as 5000 years.
Some other important places in Ziarat are: Zizri Valley. A rare artifact from Quaid’s Pictures Gallery at Ziarat Residency
Zizri valley, situated on the southern edge of the district, possesses a breathtaking beauty. The road leading to the valley is kacha, rough, and tractable mainly by four-wheel drive vehicles.
Prospect Point. Six km from the town, this place offers a spectacular view of the Koshki valley. There is a local government rest house on this spot and a wideopen space for picnic/camping.
Mana Valley. This lush green valley with its apple orchards and scintillating blue lake is a popular tourist site.
Ziarat (Shrine) of Kharwari Baba
“Prospect Point”. Kharwari Baba became a disciple of Nana sahib. A number of miracles are attributed to him. A large number of people visit his shrine and offer sacrifices in this place. During Eid, the traditional festival of the Muslims, the Tribes gathers around the shrine and hold wrestling contests and marksmanship competitions. The history of Ziarat during the British colonial administration is the same as that of the Sibi district of which it was a part until 1986. The area came under British colonial influence by the middle of the last century, and was made a part of British India in 1887 like the rest of the old Sibi district. Two years earlier, in 1885, the British Government had acquired land for construction of a civil station (at the present Ziarat town), on payment of Rs.1,400,000 to the Saidzai sub section of the Sarangzai tribe. Before the creation of Sibi district (in 1903), Ziarat used to be the summer headquarters of Thal and Chutiali District (Duki Sajavi Sub Division). Later when the Sibi District was created in 1903, it became Sibi District's summer headquarters. It formed a part of Shahrigh Tehsil of Sibi District till 1974 when it was given the status of a sub-Tehsil. Before Independence, the camp offices of the Agent to the Governor General in Baluchistan; the Revenue Commissioner, Baluchistan; the Civil Surgeon, Baluchistan; the Political Agent and the Colonisation officer, Nasirabad, used to shift to Ziarat during the summer. Following the creation of Sibi Division in 1974, the divisional offices shifted to Ziarat during the summer.

Dumyara Valley. Travelling to Dumyara valley is not for the faint-hearted. The road to this valley, although metaled, is treacherous. Naturally-grown olive trees line the valley on its peripherals but the fruit is not of premium quality, and hence, is fed to goats. In summer, trees loaded with cherries, apples, and apricots in the orchards present a picture from one's imagination of heaven Finding a tortoise or a hedgehog during the visit can be considered a bonus
Sandeman Tangi. Within easy reach of the town, this narrow gorge between lofty mountains culminates in a perennial spring. This is another major tourist attraction.
Chakor Tangi. Around 18 kms from the main city is the Chakor Tungai water stream. What is amazing is that over the years this stream has sliced the hill into two and given it the shape of a narrow alley. The area is surrounded by orchards and thick juniper forests that lace the landscape.

Bee-keeping.
This is the second highest peak in the province 3,488 m high. For climbers it presents a real challenge. The district is blessed with an overall natural beauty. There are many more places of interest than those mentioned above. In the summer season, thousands of tourists visit the area.
Bee keepers from the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) come to Ziarat district with their bee boxes when the fruit trees are in blossom. They stay here for two or three months and then move to other places. No information is available about local bee keepers. At many picnic spots pure honey is sold to tourists. Tourist season is all year round, particularly from May to October. Ziarat remains quite cool during hot summer and receives enough snowfall during winters. Light woolen clothing for summer and heavy for winters, are recommended. All in all, Ziarat offers a nice cool vacation spot for travelers of all ages.
Forestry. Ziarat has the distinction of having the second largest area of juniper forests in the world. Its total forest area is 51,335 hectares. Juniper is the major species of trees, the other major species are Wild Ash, Wild Almond and Olea species.

The Tree with its branches shaped Allah in Arabic- picture by the author
Extensive research is being done in the forest nurseries to replace the juniper forest with fast growing trees as the regeneration of the juniper is very slow. The magic of Ziarat lies in, its honey-flowers which attain a large size here, its lush green grass and cool weather even in the hottest months of summer. 'Shinshoab' a lavender-like wild bush, looks lovely in twilights. Hundreds of hectares in and around Ziarat are utilized for apple orchards. Apple grown in the orchards, particularly the black and red Kulu variety, are simply delicious. A fair amount of black cherry is also grown in Ziarat. The cherry season lasts from the 1st to 15th of June. Cherry Trees in FC Balochistan Mess at Ziarat-Picture taken by the author
Wild Life. The wild life reported in the district comprises: Suleman Markhor, Chakoor, Seesee, wolf, rabbit etc. In order to protect the wildlife several areas have been declared wildlife reserves. Enforcement of laws on wildlife is generally satisfactory.

FRENCH BREAKFAST France
I
n France breakfast is not considered an important meal and is it usually very simple, light and sweet. They use different sorts of break and croissants. They usually top this with a slice of butter or fruit jams or more salty foods, like meat and eggs. Some of the people prefer breakfast cereals. All of the above is usually accompanied him with tea, coffee, or orange juice. It is usually eaten early between 6 to 8 PM.
HALWA POORI pakistan
B
reakfast in Pakistan is a big deal. There are also traditions related to it like taking food to the new bride’s house etc. and one of the most preferred breakfasts there is Halwa Poori. It is a traditional breakfast and it features semolina pudding or as it is called Halwa and a very softly fried dough called poori, it sort of looks like a white tortilla. Halwa is made with a moisture of fried semolina mixed with sugar syrup. It is then topped with or combined with almonds and other nuts. The sweet breakfast is then paired with cardamom pods, kewra essence and cloves. Yellow or orange food coloring is used to enhance the dish to make it more vibrant. JUNE - 2022

PLANETS AROUND OTHER STARS
Director of the Astronomy Institute at Galileo University, Guatemala, C.A.
I
ncredible as it seemed, there was a time when astronomers balked at believing that there were planets around other stars. When someone talked about it, they stared at him like a crazy person. It was not until 1995, when the first discoveries of planets orbiting other stars were made using the scientific method, that the doubt was cleared up. Among the first to be discovered was Upsilon Andromedae or Titawin, a binary star which lies about 44 light years from Earth and belongs to the Andromeda
constellation. The system is composed of a yellow-white dwarf star similar to our Sun, which is named Upsilon Andromedae A and a faint red dwarf named Upsilon Andromedae B. The two stars are separated by a distance of about 750 astronomical units. It was in Upsilon Andromedae A where the first multiple extrasolar planets were discovered. So far three planets have been discovered in the planetary system; all three are believed to be gas giants. Upsilon Andromedae A has an apparent magnitude of +4 and it is visible to the naked eye. The innermost planet, named B, was discovered in 1996 and announced in January 1997 by Geoffrey Marcy and Paul Butler, some of the first planet discoverers. Due to its proximity to the star, it caused large oscillations and was relatively easy to discover. However, other oscillations remained unexplained, and so a team of astronomers at from San Francisco State University and the JUNE - 2022
Harvard - Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics independently concluded that a 3-planet model fit the observations better. On November 22, 2010, a fourth planet was found, which is similar to Jupiter. Its distance is almost the same as that which separates Jupiter from the Sun. The star does not appear to have a belt similar to the Kuiper belt in the solar system; this may be due to gravitational perturbations from Upsilon Andromedae A's distant companion, which may have removed material in the outer part of the planetary system. The existence of other planets too small to be detected is not excluded. So, we finally could see that there are other planetary systems, most of all different from our own, many of them with two stars, Jupiter-like planets and probably small planets like the Earth or Mars. 18

Years later, I met her in the lobby of the hotel where the New Life Expo was throwing their event, and she brought her fragrance. She sprayed it and I felt a calming sensation, all of my mind opened and allowed for comfort and spiritual calm. She told me it was a scent of love and I felt an overwhelming sense of love as well as a blanket of loving energy come into me. It was pure and stayed with me.”
